Amplitude (Harmonix) PS3/PS4 - KS (Funded, final day)

Update & Survey:

Hey everyone,

In the spirit of open development, we want to be sure that we are building the best game possible for the specific people that paid for its development. With this in mind, we would like to know which platform will be your main Amplitude machine, PlayStation®3 or PlayStation®4.

Of course, we are going to make both versions great (the downloadable codes will be Cross-Buy), but we may alter some of our boilerplate development practices if we see the numbers swing wildly towards one platform or the other.

Please take a sec to fill out this short survey.

Thanks,

Ryan

Thanks, voted PS4.

Yeah, did my survey and picked PS4 as well. With the insane amount of VFX and things they will want to do with the game, PS4 is going to be the definitive version of the game.

Does anyone have an idea what they're getting at with this survey? "alter some of our boilerplate development practices" is a bit cryptic.

I'm guessing it will determine if this game will be kinda like a PS3 game that then looks pretty good on PS4 or a PS4 game that looks downgraded on PS3

if that makes sense

I still don't really understand why they're remaking Amp and not going for a spiritual successor on all platforms?
The impression I got was that some of the gameplay hooks that made Amplitude so good are patented or otherwise owned by Sony. So they couldn't have just made a game that played like Amplitude with a different name.

Poor imitations in my opinion, most notably the fact that in neither game are you really building a song track by track. The song always plays in the background no matter what you do, and certain parts get volume boosts as you activate them.

Hmm that's quite interesting actually. Quite excited for this to drop. Couldn't back the KS due to lack of funds unfortunately but will probably pick it up when it launches.

Voted PS4.

I don't have one yet, but probably will by the time Amplitude comes out. Even if I never intended to get a PS4 I would still want them to focus on that, to make it the best game it could be.

So 2 games in the Rockband series that use typical Rockband music that just happen to use some mechanics from the amplitude game. I fail to see where the "spiritual" successor part is coming into play there. The fact that there was so much excitement for this kickstarter should be enough to tell you that neither of those games was a spiritual successor. No biggie, I'll get it on one of the Playstation platforms if I feel it's worthwhile.

There was precisely excitement for it because it was an *Amplitude* game. Not some kind of non-amplitude that is kind of like amplitude game. They made the right choice, especially considering that even the Amplitude itself wasn't really popular at all, so what chance in hell would some knockoff have. There's also the fact that they can't replocate the exact gameplay of Amplitude due to patent reasons.

"Spiritual successor" is a word with a relatively wide definition. It can mean anything from a game heavily influenced by another, to a sequel of a game in everything but name. A large reason those 2 games linked fall closer to the former definition is because they legally weren't able to come to close to the latter definition for legal reasons.

Update:

Project Update #19: Survey Says!

We recently sent out a survey asking which Sony platform you planned on using for Amplitude. I thought that I would drop in to give you a summary of the results.

First, I want to say that I am stunned at the awesomeness of this particular group of backers. Typically when one sends a survey out, you can expect a pretty tiny response rate (somewhere in the 2 to 10 percent range). For this survey, we heard from over 71 percent of Amplitude backers!

If you take a peek below, you will see the unedited results of the survey.

I admit that I was secretly hoping that the response would either be:

50/50 PS3/PS4 or
5/95 in either direction
Either of those would have sent a crystal clear message. The results are roughly 25/75, which is still a pretty big swing.

What does this mean for Amplitude? Both games will share all possible gameplay features (so long as the platform supports it). We are going to develop for the PS3 first, because it is the biggest risk, being the lower end hardware of the two platforms. Once it is up and running, we are moving to the PS4. Since the swing was so heavy toward the PS4, we now know that pushing PS4-ONLY features is very important.

You can rest assured that both versions will be as good as we can make it on each particular platform. This survey served an immediate purpose, but also we now have some data that can inform our day-to-day decisions, which will be based on the needs of the backers.

Thank you so much for participating in this way. You have already made a big impact on the active development of Amplitude. We will do our best to only hit you up with surveys when they are really needed (so as not to bother you), and we hope that participation remains high.

In the meantime, we’re working on a development update that will hit your inbox in the next couple weeks. Stay tuned.

Until next time,

Ryan

So sounds like they are developing PS3 first. Kind of disappointing but I guess since this was cross-gen to begin with this was always the most likely scenario. Hopefully they stay true to their word about optimizing each version for its own platform, give me 60 FPS on PS4!

The 75/25 split makes me sad that they didn't make this a PS4-only project where they may have had more resources to implement stuff like synchronous online multiplayer. On that note, I'm disappointed they haven't opened up a way for additional pledges so we could help fund that feature.

Yeah I'm not too "happy" about it, but it really does make more sense to start with the PS3 version. By the time the game is finally completed, there'll be less people playing on PS3 than now, and not everyone who backed it will own a PS4. It just makes more business sense. Can't say I blame them at all. I'm just happy for PS3 owners that they'll get a chance to play.

That sucks. I wanted it to be a Resogun-style visual experience.

Hope they make art aiming for the eventual PS4 development and but tone down/down-res the assets for the PS3 version, when they're developing.

I didn't back it, but let me get this straight....they ask for money from the public to fund the game, and then focus on making the version the public doesn't want....

Genius.

I'm shocked to see PS4 numbers so high. I'd expect it to be the other way around.
The core group of people who actively buy games are moving to current gen quickly, not surprisingly after a 7-8 year wait. You can see in a lot of cross gen splits.

EDIT: super bizzare they are starting PS3, seems counterintuitive from a fan and business perspective

There's still 25% of people that are going to be playing on PS3. That's not an insignificant number, that's 1 in 4. You can't just ignore those backers - if it makes more sense on a technical level to build up PS3 version first then that's what they should do.

And this is coming from someone who voted PS4.

So they should just shit on 2,759 people who gave them their money instead for the majority?

EDIT: This: ^^

Whilst not everyone has a PS4 at the moment, the intent from the results of the survey were that people want this on the PS4. WIth the game due in 2015, I'm assuming those currently sans PS4 are looking towards this holiday season and the big games at the end of this year to pick one up...

My ultimate fantasy is that Sony have secretly made a deal to either donate Vita dev-kits or will get someone else to port a Vita version when the main game is done.

Yeah, I'm thinking when they say "build for PS3 first" they're probably just speakin in terms of the core gameplay engine. They know 3/4 of people will be playing on PS4 so I don't see why they wouldn't be able to create high quality assets from the start and just adjust them accordingly depending on platform.

I think thats the key part most will readover

Specifically gameplay engine stuff I guess. I too want that Resogun style 60fps and awesome particles please

I can help you get this straight!

100% of fans want Amplitude on either PS4 or PS3.

Let's talk to four of these fans, in a sample representative of the survey results:

Sarah: I backed Amplitude and I want it on PS4!

John: I backed Amplitude and I want it on PS4

Sandeep: I backed Amplitude and I want it on PS4

Helena: I backed Amplitude and I want it on PS3.

All four of these individuals paid money to support a product advertised as coming to both PS3 and PS4. As you can see Helena backed Amplitude and wants it on PS3. Given than the game would not have happened without her, is it fair to say everyone, or "the public" doesn't want it?

Is that straight?

That's what I'm pulling from it. Hell, they basically said that there will probably be PS4 ONLY features so it's not like they're going to ignore the advantages of the platform.

Who cares what the lead platform is?

When you are actually playing the game, you are going to be laser-focused on incoming notes, not looking at the background or observing the polygon count of your ship. I can understand why fans of racers or first person shooters or open-world games might be disappointed if an upcoming game had the PS3 or 360 as the lead platform. But in this instance, it's largely irrelevant to you experience.

The final game will almost undoubtedly be 1080p/60FPS on PS4, and beyond that it really doesn't matter at all.
