Ancient Aliens: New Nin. 3DS now offers the best SNES emulation on any handheld

My confusion was the PSA claiming superiority when it can't even handle things like sensible soccer, not the usefulness of the hobbled together emulation hack.

The very first line in the very first post does say "(barring the nvidia shield and android devices of course)" though.

Oh. It's early days yet for emulation on 3DS. Emulation on Android was already fairly mature prior to the release of the Shield.

Still, they are pretty different classes of device really. Personally I think the Shield is awful, but I am glad it is there for people who want one.

Okay, trying this now!
Seems to work with latest firmware with browserhax. I wonder how long until Nintendo fix this.
Which emulator is the best option for Megadrive, Master System, and SNES?

Whelp, boy do I feel like I didnt miss jack. So, heres a mini rant/review of the genesis Ecco compared to the GG game.

This is really interesting! I feel there are a flurry of Master System/GG games that surpass the megadrive versions in interesting ways.

Get the latest RetroArch 3DS nightlies.

- MegaDrive, Master System / GG : Genesis GX.
- Super Nes : CatSFC.

EDIT :
There's some gems on the GG : Sylvan Tale, translated in English by AGTP Romhack, is an excellent Zelda-like. I also love the Sonic on GG / SMS and most of them : GG Shinobi 1 & 2.

Ah, good suggestion. I totally forgot that version existed. Gonna set it up right away.

edit: Ok, judging from the fps in both MD and SNES versions, it looks like Sensible Soccer is actually supposed to run at 50fps, which makes my earlier assessment that the snes version doesn't run full speed a wrong one. My bad, sorry for the confusion.

Yeah its a PAL land developed game so it was made targeting 50Hz screens.

I'd really love to be able play the sequel on 3DS but that only has Amiga and DOS versions.

I'm having a lot of problems with performance on Genesis GX.
Picodrive runs really fast, but has problems getting 1:1 pixel ratio. I think this is in part down to its auto-cropping feature, but also its crashing when changes are made.
Shining Force 2, for example, runs at 256x224, but always gets stretched to 320x240.
In Genesis GX it is easier to set the resolution correctly, but the game runs really slowly.

I recommend Marvel Land as a good test of whether games are running in the correct resolution.
Most MD stuff should run at 320x224, or 320x240 without cropping.

So if I choose the correct emulators I can still get full speed SNES and sega megadrive / genesis games running via the remaining hacks (after the latest firmwware update) on a new 3ds?

I'm asking because I just bought a N3DS, mostly to run Sonic games on it, because they look so nice on the screenshots I saw earlier.

I'm having enough headaches with pixel-size and crashing that I don;'t think I'll be using the emulation for the time being. Perhaps I got a bad daily, but neither Gen GX or Pico Drive are working properly for me.

That's disappointing.

Oh well, I'm guessing emulation will get better over time.

Playing Super Metroid on CatSFC+. It chugs a bit when there's a lot of action on screen but normally maintains a frame rate of 54-58 fps for me. Performance is better on BlargSNES but I always encounter a glitch that crashes the game whenever I enter Maridia.

This is my first go with Retroarch. I've had a homebrewed Wii and vWii ever since they were both possible but I never tried that version. If it's as well fleshed out on Wii as it is here, I'm sold.

Speaking of 50Hz oddities, if you want to play Terranigma (which you will) then for the love of all that is holy, apply this patch.

I don't know the game. I'm curious, did it only get translated for PAL regions or something?

I wouldn't recommend 60Hz for games developed in Europe like the previously mentioned Sensible Soccer as then your usually making them run faster then was intended.

It's the third in the Gaia trilogy, (Soulblazer/Illusion of Gaia/Terranigma) but for some reason never saw a US release. I don't really know why.

So without the patch, the choice was either the correct speed but in Japanese, or in English but 15% slower.

Enix USA closed.

Thanks for the patch :)

Yes that's correct. Everything is working on the newest firmware. I just did it this weekend, everything works amazingly well!

From what I've been reading in this thread you need to be using CatSFC, and not the Plus version. It has better speed.

Wait, they changed how they are delivering the nightlies. obviously since I'm ironhax I don't need cia, what are the other two? I grabbed the 3dsx as that's what I've been copying, what's the 3ds 7zip with the rom folder?

--- never mind, I guess I hadn't updated in awhile, I and they added the rom folder and now distribute them all separatly to save on downloading

This new Oct 20 nightly spits out waaaay more log info and takes forever to load new folders (looks like it's scrolling through everything in said folder before displaying it). wonder if I messed up the install or somethign

I was just about to ask does GPGX not run Sega CD games? After casually reading on the net it seems like it should, but when I try to run things it gives me grief about the bios. Picodrive works fine...

You need the sega cd bios with GPGX. You can find it online. Make sure it's called bios_CD_U.bin and put it in the directory it's telling you when it gives you the error (I forget the exact location but it's the same place as all the other bioses).

I've read about themehack being patched in todays firmware update. So when I recieve my N3DS, I can't play MH4U online or update it if I want homebrew?

Yep. Well, you can play MH online, just block the Nintendo Update Servers via your router or DNS.

But really, this is the typical homebrew situation. You usually have a choice between online or homebrew. You rarely have both - us 3DS users have been lucky recently.

You currently now cannot have both unless you have cubic ninja. Other than that...want homebrew? No eshop. Want eshop? No homebrew.

Have patience? Wait it out on the lowest possible firmware until firmware spoofing is sorted or a kernel exploit appears.

Have money? Buy a second console.

Thank you. Maybe I'll use my old OG 3ds for most games, and the N3DS xl for homebrew. I live in Europe, so I was also happy about region free. I hope I'll be able to use that.

On a side note: any cool jrpgs that are still us/jp only and not in europe?

Legend of Legacy just came out in US, not in Europe until next year.

Thank you for the quick replies :)

I look forward to getting my N3DS, it comes with 2 games so I'll enjoy it no even if I end up failing installing homebrew.

If I were you I would buy cubic ninja. Prices have gone down again (£20 on eBay I see here) and that will likely not be blocked.

I had to go back to the 10/17 nightly. Anything more recent than that is unusable because it continuously shows a truckload of log every time I access another menu or option :(

Im not having this issue.

Turn logging verbosity off, yo. That's your problem. Also, what's the issue with the log being displayed when you can simply turn the bottom screen off in retroarch by tapping it?

Ok, I'll look into that. :) It seems sold out here most places online in Norway, but I can import from ebay too.

Again, thank you for replying to my questions.

Is it possible to map the R & L buttons for in-game use?
Let's say R in place of A or something like that.

Yep. Core options then input mapping. You then save them and use the autoload turned on in settings/config.

I have per game configs in place for my GBA games, for example Yoshis Island and Zelda have R mapped to A. R and L oddly don't show up in the menu for GBA remapping but you can add them via the cfg file.

Great, thanks :)

Still having issues getting config files to auto load in retroarch, specifically catSFC and gPSP.

Wait, do I just need to rename the config I want to retroarch.cfg?!

The problem isn't that the log is being displayed, it's that it's pausing the upper screen for longer than it used to when opening a new folder as the log scrolls through every single file in the folder. I'll try it with verbose off and see if that speeds things back up.

I hadn't updated my nightly since like end of September until I finally did last night, having that same issue with the scrolling info on the bottom screen. Thought I had stuffed something up but I'm glad to see I'm not the only one with it happening!

Takes forever to load folders and stuff some times because its just scrolling so much info, now my CPS2 stuff wont load either. :( Doh!

Hmm, I think I'm stuck. I haven't got the YouTube app and I can't access the eShop without downloading the latest firmware. Any suggestions?

Yep, got Browserhax working in the end. Only tried Link To The Past but it seemed to average 35fps which is a shame.

What's the trick to getting Homebrew Launcher running on a system that's pre 9.0 firmware, but has CFW up and running on it with a mirror of 10.1? Browserhax doesn't seem to work on anything below 9.0 and doesn't seem to work when running the mirror of 10.1 either.

Since browserhax is something that runs through a website, could it ever be patched to not allow? It sounds like it's probably a safe bet to rely Browserhax, however you're just going to have to have Internet connection , which is a bummer... But not a deal breaker.

I realize PSX emulation is probably going to take a while to improve, but I was curious to test it out. I copied over an ISO that I made recently from a disc, but when I browse to open it, pcsx_rearmed doesn't see any files. Does the file need to be in a different format?

So I'd like to start utilizing this all on my New 3DS. I'm on this brand new firmware and have Cubic Ninja. I'm still good then?
