Android Gaming Thread: News & Recommendations

It won't switch to landscape mode, but I think it's totally playable even though the numbers are sideways.

Hmm, not sure if I can handle it being sideways.

Bothers me when games don't have the option. I know it's not easy but I recently bought Prison Life RPG and stopped playing after a while because even though I was having fun, playing in portrait wasn't.

Anyway, thanks for the reply.

Can someone with Threes let me know if you can play in landscape? I play on tablet and really hate holding it in portrait mode.

JBourne is wrong. I have it from the Amazon App Store and just tried it out and it rotates to fit my tablet orientation. This is on a Nexus 7 (2013).

I'm using it on my Galaxy S5 and it definitely doesn't. I have the version from Humble Bundle. Maybe it's different for tablets?

I'm playing it this very moment and it's not changing the orientation no matter which way I turn it.

Probably the right answer. Does not switch to landscape on my Moto X phone.

Seeing Maiden Voyage's screenshot seems to explain it. If they did that on a phone, it would end up being tiny.

So Valar Morghulis can safely buy Threes. Cool. It's a good game.

Purchased Icewind Dale before the sale ends. I'm just stocking up on quality titles to play over the summer at this point. It would be nice if the Baldur's Gate games went on sale for a similar price.

What the diffence between IceWind and Baldur Gate?

They're built on the same engine, but in Icewind Dale, your whole party is player created and they don't have personalities or character interactions or back stories. The plot is also more simple and the game is less about story and more about enemy encounters. Most people consider the Icewind Dale games to not be as good as the Baldur's Gate games, but they're still fun.

So I ended up buying Threes and it's amazing! I've put in a couple hours into it so far, highest score is 7410.

So addicting, wouldn't have known about it if it wasn't for GAF, I've seen it recommended here so many times and now I know why.

Yesterday, Humble Mobile Bundle 12 added two more games to the BTA tier: Groundskeeper 2 and Highrise Word Heroes Premium.

Just wanted to thank ya zero! ive picked up a slew of games, and mostly resulting from this thread and your updates. king of dragon pass, banner saga, stickman golf, catan, wayward souls, monument valley, super monkey ball, frontiers... the list goes on. these are the games i was lookng for, and i saved a bunch in the process. im not too picky wih genre, and almost every sale you post i find a gem or two.

You're very welcome. There's really no central location for Android deals, and it doesn't help that the design of the Play Store itself is lacking when it comes to sales (e.g. lack of regular price info when an app is on sale, almost no signal-boosting of deals). What I usually just do is sift through: AppSales (Good for tracking deals and finding out regular prices, though they only track the Play Store, and their bot sometimes acts wonky), weekly deal roundups at Android Police, the Android Deals thread over at CAG (The OP hasn't been updated in months, but the other posters tend to post replies), Amazon Appstore's front page (in case they're advertising any major app giveaways or sales), Humble Bundle, and Wario64's Twitter (he sometimes tweets deals for major titles on both iOS and Android). From there, it's just a matter of spotting any deals that look interesting; games that pique my interest, have been mentioned before in this thread, and/or games with recognizable names/brands behind them.

^^^ Also available through the NA Amazon app.

Few games to note.

Five nights at Freddy's 3
Sorcery 3
Star Command
Star Traders 4x Empire Elite
Telltale GoT - Probably just the first episode though.

Here's the US link:
http://www.amazon.com/b/ref=nav_sap_mas_15_05_14_May_Bundle?ie=UTF8&node=10076151011

It's organized a bit differently this time, with the apps being sorted into different tabs. EDIT: Ah, it removes the apps that you already have from the list, so it's easier to see what you don't have.

I am a bit surprised to see Sorcery 3 in there. That came out only a few weeks ago, and if it's anything like the previous Sorcery games, it should be well worth picking up. (I still need to finish 2 so I can transfer my save to it)

EDIT: Here's the list:
Empress of the Deep: The Darkest Secret
Cooking Dash Deluxe
Five Nights at Freddy's 3
Angry Birds Seasons
Angry Birds Seasons HD (Fire Edition)
Royal Envoy
Rebuild
Mini Golf Mundo
Highrise Word Heroes+
Bloons TD 5
Time Mysteries 2: The Ancient Spectres
Bike Race Pro
Sorcery! 3
Grudgeball: Enter the Chaosphere
Star Traders 4X Empires Elite
Game of Thrones (As Valar said above, likely just the 1st episode)

I'm not sure if this will help anyone, but I've had tremendous success with the google app "link2sd". (Samsung Galaxy Note 2014 Edition.) With it, I've been able to successfully move some of the larger games--looking at you banner saga--to my SD card. With the freed up space, I picked up a copy of Icewind Dale last night, and re-installed a large # of games I'd previously removed out of concern for space.

Caveat? I've only had it for two days (plus version) so time will tell. I've reset my tablet after the moves, and still no issues. I have rooted my tablet, though the app doesn't state it's needed. (Along with performing other tweaks to the interface.)

Cool, snagged Sorcery! 3. Although I have yet to even play 1, and don't even have 2... >_>

I played through 2, though not 1. It was a lot of fun, and reminded me of a choose-your-own-adventure but in a game format. Obviously, there are more stats/options than the books. Surprisingly, my 9yr-old loved #2 and didn't put it down for three days.

Hey! New from Adult Swim - Tofu Hunter (Disclosure - I was a producer on this title)

It's the shooting gallery/tofu hunting game you've always wanted. Free! And the Android version is out a day after it appeared on iOS, so that's almost like a simultaneous release, right?

Speaking of Sega, looks like they've started de-listing some games. So far, the following are gone from Google Play and Amazon (But they can still be downloaded by those who already purchased them):
- House of the Dead Overkill: Lost Reels (Actually, I think this was de-listed a while back)
- Jet Set Radio (This isn't much of a surprise. It didn't work on LP, and the last update was back in March of last year to support the Shield)
- Football Manager Handheld 2014 (2015 is up on the store)
- Super Monkey Ball 2 Sakura Edition (Still up on Amazon, and was part of a previous Humble Bundle)
- Afterburner: Climax (Not surprising either; the console versions were de-listed a while back, and this apparently had some problems since KitKat)

Man I want to like this game but it's just a little aggressive with the energy requirements and the number of lengthy ads. To be fair, I didn't check if I can pay to turn the ads off.

Humble Artifex Mundi Mobile Bundle (Android-only), all hidden-object-style adventure games from the developer Artifex Mundi:
https://www.humblebundle.com/mobile

PWYW Tier:
Deadly Puzzles
Time Mysteries 1
Clockwork Tales

BTA Tier:
Demon Hunter
Grim Legends
Time Mysteries 2
Time Mysteries 3

$9 Tier:
Grim Legends 2
Enigmatis 2

I don't know if these are any good; I recognize a few from previous FAOTD bundles, but they all seem like hidden-object/static-puzzle games.

I have played Grim Legends 1 & 2 and they are pretty decent, much better than your run of the mill hidden object games.

I have some coins i need to burn through on the Amazon App Store before I lose them.

What are some games I can grab on there that equal about $10-15? Genre doesn't really matter.

Just a heads up, Banner Saga on Amazon isn't working as of a recent update. Checking out the reviews, it broke around April 16th. If you want to buy it, get it from the Google Play store.

You can lose Amazon coins...?

According to Amazon's website, purchased coins never expire, but I think coins that you get through a promotion can expire. There was a big promotion about a year ago where you could get $20+ in coins, but I think they were only good for a year.

IIRC, the promo coins expire a year after your last app purchase with coins. So if you got in on that $20 coin promo last year and haven't bought anything with them since then, you should probably purchase an app to keep them active.

Oh man! I need to spend them today then, cause I still have those.

Guess I need to post this again since there are some people who seem to have already forgotten after 2 page. Wow, how the mind slips!

If you can afford it, just spring for a Moga. I got a cheapo Chinese controller from iPega and it has nasty lag

I was debating on buying one but I have so many controllers just laying around that hardly get used. I have a tough time justifying buying another one to myself.

I totally understand. You should definitely look into how many of your games have controller support before getting wrapped up in rooting your Nexus. In my case, the games I want to play (GTA: SA, Riptide GP2, Snowboard Party, and Pac-Man CE) are a lot more enjoyable with a controller, so I just went for it.

I wound up just going for it. I used to root and install custom roms a few years ago. I got tired of it. I forgot that the rooting part was generally the easy part. I haven't tried it out on any games just yet as my tablet is restoring all my apps.

That's weird. I don't have any lag issues with my ipega. I would've noticed, since I've been playing Gitaroo Man Lives through PPSSPP.
