I use feedr for daily feeds and Reader HD for weekly feeds. Feedr is not pretty but it update feed faster than anything else including reeder on iOS. I ride subway in NYC so I need a google reader app that can cache feeds and photos very quickly and properly.

On Android, sending article to Pocket (formerly readitlater) is much easier than doing it on iOS. We don't have instapaper becase that dude whose name shall not be mentioned is a hilarious hardcore Apple evangelist.

I use shiprack. You need to setup gmail to forward all email with delivery info to shipwack.. But after you set it up. Its extremely handly. You don't need to do one single thing. The moment you get the "your delivery info" email, shiprack will start tracking it for you. You get notice for "out for delivery" and "delivered" update too.

I use tasks. It's one of the many google tasks app you can use. It syncs with google tasks so you can access it on calendar.google.com

1 Titanium Backup is better than anything on any other system including Windows you should switch for that alone
2 Yeah
3 Upload you library to google music
4 You still can easily install old flash apk on your Android phone. Although most porn site can trigger steaming with video app now. I recommend Dice Player.
5 A good custom rom will let you put silence and 1000 million other switches on the notification screen. Or you can install Notification Toggles. This field is Android's streigth.

Good suggestions. However, Instapaper is available on Android. It's been out for months. Although I personally love Pocket. In terms of tracking, I don't use any apps, and the one you listed could very well be great, but it is pretty undeniably ugly. Package Buddy looks prettier and has great reviews, so that might be better suited.

I have to defend the honor of Shiprack here. Who care if its 10000 million times uglier than other apps and it's designed by an east european communit commission. I don't have to enter the tracking number! Therefore, it's automatically ten gazillion times better than your tracking app.

I only interact with shiprack through the notification screen 90% of the time. Only the other 10% I go into the app.

So, Apple is not willing to sell me an unlocked iPhone 5. The N4 being $350 (almost half the price) with an S4 Pro has me intrigued. But, I'm heavily invested in the iOS ecosystem so I need to know first if there are comparable alternatives to the apps and services I rely on.

When I mean comparable, I'm not talking just about functionality. I mean the whole package. I need comparable apps that don't sacrifice on design, speed, and fluidity. Animations and touch input need to be smooth like the OS--I don't want any lag. If anyone has used any of these apps on iOS, what would you recommend as a comparable alternative on Android?

And if not, what are the best apps in each category? They don't have to be free.

1. Reeder, a Google Reader client. I need things like a readability mobilizer, gestures for going between articles and marking articles as read or starring them. I need read later services like Instapaper. I don't want apps like Feedly or Flipboard that make it into a magazine--I want an app that quickly shows the headlines of articles in a list so I can quickly get to what I want to read.

Hmm...gReader is good, and seems to do the functionality you want, although it's not quite as pretty.

SKSmrey5W0UkV2mj0t921W5_ILEgufrM-eklo-7_EgsHV1PGOAiCWrQT3uB7bXzVJ1s

2. Tweetbot, a twitter client. Easy access to conversation and reply views, inline thumbnails for links, gestures (replying, favoriting, etc), readability mobilizer, sending to instapaper, tweet marker, tweet detail pages. Lots and lots of functionality, yet well designed.

There are no Twitter apps as good as Tweetbot, which is common knowledge. My favorite, though, is Boid. I think it has everything you are needing, and it looks pretty good.

abDVzc07pd7eY7uUANGUWHhIFuFV8jBFipm_tQvzHdr7zVhhUxdxYrZp8K1bysrTioRl

3. Delivery Status, a package tracker. It syncs with the dashboard widget to provide up to date delivery tracking. It auto detects tracking numbers when inputting them and nicely matches them with the respective service (like Fedex or UPS).

Package Buddy looks pretty good, and has great reviews, although I haven't used a tracking app so I don't know for sure how good it is.

4. Notes. Built into iOS, I use it a TON to sync quick snippets between my Mac and phone. Automatic cloud syncing in the background is absolutely crucial. Is there an app like this, that can instead sync with Dropbox? I can use Notational Velocity on my Mac if it can.

I really like Catch Notes. Looks really nice and it syncs across the Catch.com website.

5. Find my iPhone. Self explanatory. I need something that will track my phone and provides options like remote lock, wipe, send message, and so on.

Where's my Droid is ugly as sin, but it provides a lot of functionality. Very good.

6. Things, a GTD app. Absolutely love the Mac app for keeping track of projects and lists of things I need to finish. They don't make an Android app and it would pain me to stop using it. A phone app isn't crucial to me, but it would be nice. What do you guys use that syncs with a mac app?

Tasks syncs with Google Tasks and keeps to the Holo theme. Works well.

7. Calcbot, a calculator. History, advanced functions, parenthesis, etc. It's also extremely pretty. What options do I have?

Hmm...not sure about this one. My S3's calculator has all of that, but the stock Android calculator doesn't. RealCalc provides all of that functionality and more, but not so hot in the looks department. I guess it depends on how important looks are to your calculator app.

Maybe somebody else can help me with that one.

So that's apps. Next, I need to know about OS and system level services.

1. Over the air backups and restores. Automatic daily iCloud backups are wonderful and very useful to me. What's the option here?

Not sure.

2. I have all of my contacts in iCloud also. I assume I'll have to transfer them over to my Gmail? Have they fixed the low res contact photo bug?

Yes. And it's fixed

3. Music syncing. I cannot stand drag/drop for transferring music. I just like to sync my starred music in iTunes. I don't think this phone will sync with iTunes. What are my options?

Google Music. They will have a match service soon (and right now you can upload up to 20,000 songs to their servers to stream or download on your phone for free). Great music player too.

4. Since flash is discontinued, I'm curious how it will handle sites that serve video. On iOS, every site serves me efficient and smooth HTML5 video. Is it the same here? Can I switch my user agent to iOS Safari to get HTML5 video?

Not sure

5. I noticed there's no physical silent switch. How do I mute all system sounds and alerts, but keep my alarms and music unmuted?

Hold down power/wake button, and silent will be an option. Alarms and music will not be affected.

Thanks! I'll have plenty more questions once I think of them…

.

Oh, okay, so Package Buddy doesn't work like that? Reading the description of Shiprack, it looks like you have to forward the order confirmation email to them every time you want to track an order, so how is that any better than entering the tracking number every time you want to track an order? Unless I'm mistaken there.

You can create filter rules in gmail (or outlooks) to do the forwarding automatically. Its a set it and forget it process.

These are my gmail filters
Matches: tracking ups
Do this: Apply label "[Tracking]", Forward to packages@ship-rack.com

Matches: tracking usps

(****** joke here [you guys know what i mean {that which shall not be named without a valid play store link!}]) but seriously, i'm a Twitter scrub, i use the official Twitter app... there's lots of apps but Bboy AJ hates them all so i assume they're all missing something...

3. Delivery Status, a package tracker. It syncs with the dashboard widget to provide up to date delivery tracking. It auto detects tracking numbers when inputting them and nicely matches them with the respective service (like Fedex or UPS).
there are several apps that do package tracking, and Google is also adding it natively to Google Now. i use Parcels.

4. Notes. Built into iOS, I use it a TON to sync quick snippets between my Mac and phone. Automatic cloud syncing in the background is absolutely crucial. Is there an app like this, that can instead sync with Dropbox? I can use Notational Velocity on my Mac if it can.
quite a few apps for this. i use Evernote.

i use Notes for ICS, but there are apps like Tasks, gTasks, Any.DO and more... all of which sync with Google Tasks, and apparently there are several apps on the Mac app store that will sync Google Tasks to Mac.

7. Calcbot, a calculator. History, advanced functions, parenthesis, etc. It's also extremely pretty. What options do I have?
i have nooooooooooooooooo idea on this, but there are a ton of calculator apps available.

1. Google backs up *some* things, but not a lot... i use Titanium Backup

2. You can either use SmoothSync if you want to continue using iCloud, or you can (should) just export your contacts to a file then import to gmail.

3. there are apps for that, most notably doubleTwist. or you could just use Google Music and have all your music (up to 20k songs) in ~~~the cloud~~~!

4. they'll work like they do on other platforms with no Flash. you get HTML5 video or you get nothing. also, you can install flash manually...

5. there are separate volume sliders for media/apps, ringtones, notifications, call volume and alarms.

i'm really not sure what the purpose of that music app was...i'm pretty sure it was needed with poweramp and even google music (for the cloud, and if you want to stay in the google play ecosystem)

Bloat vs. Functionality

A fact that doesn’t dawn on a lot of our users is that stock CM does not include a market. You as an end user are supplying your own zips to enable that functionality. Further, even for those with Market access, region restrictions can limit what you are allowed to download. Instead of trying to account for all the variations post-CM install, we focus on out of the box experience. If a new user who doesn’t install a market wants to play music, do they have that ability? What if they want to delete a pdf that was downloaded via an email, or unzip a file they’ve copied to their system?

...

With the exception of ROM Manager (which has been removed from our builds), apps added to CM not only fulfill a purpose, but allow for community contribution for improvements. This is important to us, and is something that helps us crowdsource updates, fixes and management of the application.

...

In the end, we aren’t oblivious to the fact that users may have already established favorite apps to provide these functions. We are also aware that our apps aren’t perfect or 1-to-1 on feature parity with market apps. But, that’s not our goal. Our goal is to ensure that out of the box, you can manage your system, play your music, update your rom, and enjoy CM without the need to flash on a market.

that's just a small quote from the post.

I've never used Reeder myself, but what's missing from the official app? I love it, does exactly what it says on the tin.

Potential iOS to android user here. Loving what I see with the nexus and dat clean stock android.

My question is my @me email address. When I got my 4S I started using @me as my main address. I have an old hotmail and a gmail account being forwarded to it as well.

Can I use this @me address in the gmail app? My only experience with android has been on an S3 which I did not enjoy much (bloat.)

I know the s3 has both a mail app and a gmail app. I'm guessing the mail app is a Samsung app and works with all email providers?

I'm just kind of confused how the gmail app works. I assume that is the only mail app that comes with the nexus stock android, right? How would I get it to work with my @me address and will I still retain all the push functionality I have on my iPhone?

Thanks. Just trying to clear up some questions before I decide on making the switch.

Also, anyone know where I can find a list of stock apps that come with the latest version of android? I want to see if stock android itself has bloatware I won't be using. For example, the s3 has flipboard installed by default and I don't know if that's something added by Samsung or default on android by google.

You just go to the accounts section in settings and add your mail account there. The Gmail app is only for gmail. The email app is also included in stock Android so you won't have any problems there.

Oh, so the mail app IS there. Hmm. Does it share all the same features as the gmail app? I guess no one uses an @me here on android? May decide to switch back to gmail as my main. I really use gmail and @me as my two main addresses.

Going by memory here:

Play Store
Play Music
Calendar
Calculator
Chrome / Browser
Clock
Gallery
GMail
Google Maps
Google+ (not sure about this one)
Google Search (aka Google Now)
Email
Messaging
People
Settings

YouTube (not sure about this one either)

Also, remember that all apps are replaceable. If you don't like the email app you can download another and make that one the default.

If you could just reverse the forwarding it would probably be more convenient for you in the long run since the 'gmail' account is actually a 'Google' account which includes the contacts, tasks, backups, as well as mail, etc...

Then again you can input multiple accounts so you could just as easily set it to not sync emails from Gmail while still syncing everything else. I still find the Gmail app to be the best overall email client out there, so I would consider it. You'll still manage just fine if you don't though.

Up to you really.

I think.

You can also "Disable" any of the preinstalled apps and you won't see them at all.

Also I definitely recommend you switch to gmail and redirect your @me mail to there. Android + Google services are a great match.

I have decided to move to android from apple because apple maps has let me down to many times.
I am excited by google now and think google is moving into a better direction than apple. The games on th App Store don't excite me anymore so I am well aware that android isn't as good in that department.
But I'm undecided which phone to buy, am I better with the galaxy 3 or nexus? Also why is the galaxy 3 only getting jellybean now when the galaxy 4 is probably not that far away.

Nexus 4 unless LTE is important to you. If it is a deal breaker go with the S3.

Because the state of Android updates is a chaotic mess in comparison to iOS and always will be unless you buy a Nexus device. Actually that isn't completely true, I have a Galaxy Nexus but don't get updates from Google. But hey, Android is 'open'!

you want google + though, solely for the photo instant uploads. You dont have to use it for anything besides that if you dont want to... although hangouts through them is superior to most other available options

It isn't just a social network on Android devices, but THE main way to cloud sync photos and 'face time' other droiders.

The problem with Google+ photo uploading is that it downscales the images. I use Dropbox instead which will do the same automatic uploading but at full resolution.

wow, didn't know this. Makes me want to use dropbox, but I like going all Google...

hmmm i'm gonna download the pics saved to my G+ and if I don't like how they look on a PC, then i'm going to start using dropbox.

hopefully it's not as bad as contact sync was lol.

so cool by the way that the contact sync was a server side issue and everyone now has high res contact sync without an update (i mean those who at least have ICS or later i think)

i think he should get a galaxy S3 and just install aokp or cm10...

even better in my opinion, plus he will get a micro sd slot...

but if he is coming from iphone..probably doesn't matter...

Well, I've gone an impulse ordered a Galaxy Camera... Should be here by the end of the week.

I do wish it was cheaper and smaller, but kind of slim pickings in this specific market at the moment, so it'll have to do. I think smart-cameras will eventually be a big thing, at least among enthusiasts, so I'm excited to experience the development first-hand. Mobile 4G routers make multi-devicing convenient again although I suppose it will still be unfashionable. Camera phones are pretty awful though. I think it will be a long time before they even catch up with current low-end compact cameras.

So can someone with a Xperia P tell me if its good enough at its price range? I've heard it has one of the best cameras compared to its more expensive siblings/competitor.

Right now I'm looking for a dual core Smartphone with a good camera, ok dual core CPU, 1GB ram. If it has a SD card holder it's not a recommendation.

How does this stack against the Galaxy Advance S and Galaxy S3 Mini? I know that Xperia Sola has worse camera, memory and screen so that is out.

Will Xperia P get Jelly Bean? If it has the same specs as G3 Mini it should right?

How does this stack against the Galaxy Advance S and Galaxy S3 Mini? I know that Xperia Sola has worse camera, memory and screen so that is out.

Will Xperia P get Jelly Bean? If it has the same specs as G3 Mini it should right?
Why not Nexus 4?

I think.

You can also "Disable" any of the preinstalled apps and you won't see them at all.

Also I definitely recommend you switch to gmail and redirect your @me mail to there. Android + Google services are a great match.

You and Angst both missed one app: the phone app lol

Seconded. Use the Google + services.

It isn't just a social network on Android devices, but THE main way to cloud sync photos and 'face time' other droiders.

Why? Photo backup with Dropbox is better.

When google+ first offer photo backup, I could direct link it and post on the forum. Now I can't do it any more. Dropbox is better. At least I have them on my laptop.
