Tell me about it

i'm pretty sure they want to make sure it's a success in the US first...once they can secure some sort of ground in the US, they will probably move on. If all of these improvements are true I really hope it works to be a better product that is used more than ISIS.

Carriers have too much control already in the US. Let's not give them more.

I'm not sure that's the reason. We're actually quite ahead in NFC payment systems here in Canada. Companies seem to enjoy testing new payment systems (like the card chip system and paypass) up here. Seems like it'd be obvious to bring it here asap. Must be some meddling by whatever hands are already in that pot right now.

Speaking of NFC, what app do you need so you can get the tag information? I was surprised when I found some at washrooms here at school lol.

i truly don't understand how the carriers have any control over the apps you put on your phone. I mean, they aren't anything but the data stream for any app, what makes Wallet different? I'm looking at you Verizon.

Speak of the goddamn devil:

Rogers and CIBC “to complete first mobile credit card payment in Canada” tomorrow

http://mobilesyrup.com/2012/11/01/rogers-and-cibc-to-complete-first-mobile-credit-card-payment-in-canada-tomorrow/

Mobile payments will get a boost tomorrow as Rogers and CIBC will be going live with their new mobile payment option. We previously let you know that this service will be called “suretap,” or the app will specifically go by the name of “CIBC Mobile Payment.”

This new service will give Rogers customers who have the NFC-enabled BlackBerry Bold 9900 or the Curve 9360 the ability to pay for small value items via their device, then billed to your CIBC credit card. These two BlackBerry devices are the only ones currently compatible, but others will be added soon. The “first mobile credit card payment in the country” will take place tomorrow at 11:00am in Toronto at a local Tim Hortons. The celebrity who will usher in this new era is Olympic gold medalist Simon Whitfield.

Fuck Yoouuuuuuuuu

as long as they all work on the standard tap systems (paypass et al) there could be 500 mobile payment apps, i dont give a shit.

i thought that was a business move because instead of promoting wallet, they are promoting ISIS. I'm sure they have a reason for each app they block, like tethering apps, because they want you to pay for tethering, and they don't want to spend millions to try to prevent you from doing it. they would rather have that as profit.

so the nexus 4 is supposed to be exclusive to O2 in the UK for a month, does that mean you can't buy it from google play and use it on a different carrier?

or is it just that you can only get it on a contract with O2?

I would imagine that O2 will be the only carrier to offer the phone on contract, shouldn't affect the release of the unlocked phone on the Play Store.

if i'm not mistaken solavei is 'network marketing' also known as 'multi-level marketing'. Think amway, cutco or vector. You get a small piece of the revenue that's generated when you get other people to sign up. It doesn't seem as bad as vector or amway because there's no huge upfront cost though, just making sure people go in with their eyes open.

I have a question about widgets on Xperia T.

Here, you can see that I have an active walkman widget. Unfortunately I can't toogle it on, when I'm using Nova Launcher, as it simply isn't avaible in Widgets menu, when I'm on Nova launcher.

Is there any way to have this widget not only on default launcher?

nooo he was just saying that he dropped it off his dining room table and it got a small crack.

But I think it was David Pierce who said he literally threw his on the floor (was aiming for his couch) and nothing happened to it, lol.

Did they say they were going to talk more about the N4? Sort of seem like they glossed over it. Though I hope they don't just bitch about the lack of LTE again.

The review will probably take off huge marks for LTE.

will still get higher rating than WP8

Well considering my carrier doesn't have LTE, I couldn't care else about that. I'd be glad to hear about everything else about the phone.

He didn't really bitch about LTE, just mentioned how weak it makes google look that they couldn't get it done without getting bitched around. Which is true.

hmmm iphone got simultaneous updates right? why wasn't google able to do this with the nexus?

is it because the carriers don't want to piss apple off?

just an honest question...

no reason google couldn't spend a whole year updating android so that most of the flagships could get an update at the same time...i dunno it could happen...but at that point people would be saying in droves that android is getting stale...

still i want a nexus so i don't have to worry about that

Oakley Snow Goggles with an LCD screen HUD lol. it runs Android (it's actually a separate piece made by a Canadian company called Rekon)

it is being sold in Apple stores for $600 lol. Wonder if these will sell.

Yeah I guess that's true, I'm just still annoyed at them for the monday vergecast that was just whining about it. One thing is that Google is in this position where they're criticized for letting Samsung and HTC ruin their OS, but on the other hand, when they try to just do their own thing, they get screwed by the carriers not letting them have LTE. It's a shitty situation for them to be in, and I'm not sure how they're going to get out of it.

Apple can push updates through carriers because they have the clout. They say, PUSH THAT SHIT THROUGH OR ELSE MOTHER FUCKERS. And the carriers give in.

If google said to push it they'd be like "hahaha shut the fuck up google" and google would be like "ok :(".

Samsung has clout and can get it done if they wanted to, but instead they'd rather put the verizon logo on their home button. So I guess we know what side they're on.

While I don't care about not being able to carry an extra battery around, I'm wondering mostly about hard resets. Are the button combination resets on phones without removable batteries as reliable at rebooting frozen devices as a simple battery pull? I realize this is probably a dumb question, but since I've never had a phone without a removable battery, I really don't know.

on the iphone it is. Never done it on an android phone.

most if not all phones (and even other electronics) with a non-removable battery allow you to hold down the power button for 10 seconds which disconnects the battery temporarily.

it works on some devices with removable batteries as well, but not all.

and you can carry an extra battery pack around if you wish. there are tons on the market that can plug into your micro usb port (or iphone port if you're into that sort of thing), thing is most are the size of another phone, possibly bigger, but there are some that they have tried to make really slim but managed to still keep a useful amount of energy in them

search it on amazon, i'd link it but i'm soooo lazy

It's a reasonable question. My transformer tab doesn't have a removable battery, and has a habit of going into bootloops and such on occasion. Long presses do the trick every time.

i wish apple would sell the iphone unlocked like Google does...make a power play for manufacturers...but the thing is that would just benefit other manufacturers and things would be about the same for the iphone, except the more expensive price would drive sales way down...not smart business i guess.

They do in Canada. That is, if you want to pay $699/799/899 for one.

So it's November and at least in the US out of the 3 major phone manufacturers Samsung, HTC, and Motorola of their major phones for 2012 like the Atrix HD, One X/S, and and the GS3 only the Sprint version of the GS3 is officially on Jellybean.

Same shit different year for non nexus devices despite what the manufacturers might say.

Well yeah but how is that legal?

2) the carriers in the US do not support the iphone. All troubleshooting, repairs, warranty service, etc is directed to Apple. Google doesn't do that for carrier subsidized nexii

So, pocket got updated with smoother performance, amazing cos that was its only real drawback. And NFC task launcher is about to get an update with a UI overhaul, they just showed it off on a Youtube video. There's also a longish Saudi video showing off more of the Nexus 4.

It's 6 minutes long, here:

I was month-to-month on Verizon since my initial 2-year contract ran out, and I was in the market for a Galaxy Nexus. I saw the writing on the wall when Verizon took months and months to update to 4.04. I knew then that I could renew my contract with them and be forced to check the internet for updates week-in and week-out pining for when Verizon would finally feel it necessary to grace my phone with 4.1, or I could order my phone straight from Google.

Went with the GSM Nexus, cancelled my service with Verizon, and couldn't be happier. Getting timely updates pushed straight from Google has made my smartphone experience so much better. I'll never trust the carriers when they say that they'll deliver fast updates.

I just can't do GSM only again. Not being able to use my phone in crowded areas is a downer. I have no problem being off contract, Google just didn't deliver this year

Just reposting this because I think you missed it:

Hm... how do you get this to work? I've tried the same thing but whenever I check latitude, it only shows recently checked-in, not real-time position. I'm thinking that I'm not viewing it in the right app for some reason.

business as usual for the carriers. you think it's a coincidence that the Sprint GS3 only got JB the same week the Note II released? US carriers carefully craft their update schedule to make newer phones look more attractive by holding back updates on older models.

remember when you get a carrier branded or carrier bought phone, the manufacturer's customer IS THE CARRIER, you are the carrier's customer. it's only when you get an manufacturer phone that you are the manufacturer's direct customer with no middleman involved.
