It’s definitely up there, but I feel FLCL and Baccano! could easily take that spot too. They all have gold medals in my book.

One of the voice actors I met this year was Caitlin Glass, a veteran who did Yakumo from School Rumble (my favorite anime comedy), Haruhi from Ouran High School Host Club, and of course, Miria from Baccano!

I got my Baccano! Blu-Ray signed by her, and afterwards wondered how long it would be before I could meet J. Michael Tatum, who voiced Miria’s partner in crime Issac.

And then I check the con’s guest lineup for 2024, and Mr. Tatum is confirmed to be attending.

Eden It's A Endless World: A+ (Manga)

This manga came out of nowhere and blew me away. The world building, the plot, the characters, etc were all fantastic. Every character was so well developed that when they died, I cared. Also this manga has no issue killing characters. I was surprised at the plot twists. Not to the mention, the science fiction aspect of it was interesting, especially when they went all Hard Sci Fi and started to get into Scientific theory. The art was reminscent of the old school style, so I had to get use to it. I eventually did and I loved it. There's lot of explicit sex scenes/nudity and lot of extremely gory moments. This is my favorite manga I read this year. Highly recommended

I remember watching this. I never learned how mahjong is played though. I think I had the same issue with that hikaru no go anime. I mean seriously how can you watch 75 episodes of an anime and still barely understand how the game works.

Well, final package for the year came in and I couldn't imagine a better closing to 2023 than My Dress-Up Darling. This set is absolutely stunning. Also came with some extra's in a separate box but I mainly just wanted the show physically. And the box is stunning. I love when they go all out with decorations and 3d stuff.

And as for new anime - finally got around to binging The Apothecary Diaries the past 2 nights and this show is pretty darn good so far. Really loving the artstyle and character designs and the main character, Maomao, is already a personal favorite. Kinda wanna check out the manga now.

I just never jumped back into it for season 3. I just didn't think the sailing part would be that interesting. Maybe someday my interest will be renewed for it.

I've read the whole thing. Try to stick with it up to Treasure Island, that's actually a really fun arc. After that, feel free to drop it.

Dr. Slideshow. lol. I read the manga up until after Stone Wars and when they were about to travel the world I dropped it myself back in 2018 or whatever. Shounen Jump is in a much better place than it was 5 years ago. I do consider finishing that & Promised Neverland but they just aren't good enough to me to bother with.

Also read the second omnibus of Spriggan... Please tell me that this series doesn't keep this format of MC meets a thot and fights a bad guy with minimum stakes for the rest of the series. I'm actually so bored of it. At least the Werewolf characters little story at the end was decent.

Kabaneri isn't that good.

AOT season 3 is good, don't listen to the whiners. You don't have to base your opinion on that of others. A lot of people are parrotting each other just to feel like they belong to the "cool" clique (read: smartass).

Season 3 is about story and world and character building.
Theres a lot to take in with what is actually going on, so keep going, it's totally worth it.

Anyways, just watched Summer Ghost, a short 40 minute movie. Don't normally watch those, but this one was pretty good. Not too fond of the character designs but I guess the style fits the heavy subject of the movie. And man

The ending was a bit weird though, wished this movie was 20-30 minutes longer.

Also finally finished Goblin Slayer Season 1, but that show reached its peak with the first episode I feel. It's not bad, just pretty forgettable. The first episode was great but after that it became completely formulaic. Not sure if ill continue with S2, so we'll see about that.

10 episodes. Mumei goes down like a clueless punk and our villain continues to be a one-dimensional pretty boy villain. I've been playing tracks from Final Fantasies 9 and 10 over every time he speaks just to see how much they fit.

EDIT: Finished Kabaneri. Show ends really really dumb and underwhelming, and I can swear that most of everything that happens in the last two episodes is cribbed from other, older shows that the director and writer really liked. Maybe that's why Digibro liked it so much to be an apologist for it?

Maybe once it gets to the MAPPA portion of the adaptation but everything WIT covered was gold and I still think narratively the MAPPA section was still good. It's easy to hate on AoT now, I was shitting on it YEARS ago after it got an anime adaptation to be edgy but once the hype died down and shit like MHA overtook it I got reinvested with S2 onward and dropped the manga. I hated the human vs human element in the manga. AoT is good overall, more good than bad I haven't seen the conclusion movie still yet but it's meant to be not good so... Legacy just about held together I guess for Isayama?

Sousou no Frieren (Frieren: Beyond Journey's End) 1-2

This show has been sitting on top of the MAL ratings list for a few months now, so alright fine I'll start watching it.

The description of the show seems pretty mundane but maybe I'm approximately the right age for this shit or my current life situation is perfect for it but damn this one hits like a ton of bricks. I guess you never really think about what it's like being the long-life species because the story invariably is from the point of view of the humans who live the shortest lives. This goes for everything from The Lord of the Rings to whatever recent fantasy story mixes Humans, Elves, and Dwarves. It's also a theme heavily present in the Xianzhou Luofu arc of Honkai: Star Rail.

It's one of those things where you realize that J.R.R. Tolkien actually did sort of envision a world after Sauron was defeated and was finally at peace, and that while The Tale of Aragorn and Arwen ends with the passing of Aragorn, as it turns out Arwen does keep on living for quite a long time after Aragorn is gone. Of course we also know that as far as Arwen is concerned, she actually did choose to live the life of a mortal and would die herself. So even that is a bit of a cop-out in terms of imagining the experiences of someone who will not die period short of being killed violently.

Being that she is an Elf, Frieren here is destined to live indefinitely. After a thousand years of already being alive, she joined an adventuring party that defeated the Demon King and saved the world, and then the story starts after the end credits would normally roll at the end of a Final Fantasy game. 50 years later, the 2 human members of the party grow old and pass, leaving the now elderly but still looking the same as ever Dwarf Eisen and Frieren behind in the world. This doesn't sound like that exciting a premise but then I started watching this show. Fair enough, let's see if I can handle another 14 episodes of this (so far).

For the people who don't know Fate, the appearance of Fern is clearly modeled on Sakura. Young Fern even wears the same ribbon in her hair. I'm glad the manga author and artist are such Fate fans lol

That part is one of the best in the whole show. And if a show doesn't air more or less regularly through separate parts, most people will lose interest or forget about it.

A lot of people who dislike the show dislike it because of the ending, not season 3.

If you haven't seen it yet, you might wanna give Maquia: When The Promised Flower Blooms a shot. It's just a two hour movie, but to me it has the same kinda feel. An immortal being adopts a human baby who then inevitably grows older even as she stays young. Really beautiful movie imo.

Finally up to date with Frieren again and it's still great. Not much action in the latest few episodes but it's a very comfy watch.

Also watched the lastest episodes so far of The Apothecary Diaries and loving this show. The plot thickens and there's some seriously heavy subjects going on like executions and murder but the show never loses its lightheartedness thanks to Mao Mao.

Both this and Frieren have top tier main protagonists and battle it out for best show of this season as far as I'm concerned.

A little while ago someone here recommended me Sweetness and Lightning and this show is adorable. A single dad trying to learn to cook for his daughter after his wife passes away. Only 12 episodes so it's a quick, cute and adorable watch for anyone who's likes slice-of-life.

And finally Skip and Loafer. Another adorable little coming-of-age show, but this time about a girl from the countryside with big plans after movie moving to a Tokyo highschool. I didn't care that much for the 'drama' in the final few episodes but otherwise this show is another very easy recommendation for fans of the genre. Most of the characters are very likable, even the ones who might not seem to be at first, and it's just another very comfy watch which has at least one relatable character for anyone watching it.
