"Clair Obscur is the franchise name. Expedition 33 is one of the stories that we want to tell in this franchise," director Guillaume Broche told MrMattyPlays (thanks TheGamer).
"Exactly what it will look like and what the concept will be is still too soon to announce, but what is sure is that this is not the end of the Clair Obscur franchise."

The story ended with 2 ending of the game. anything in that universe is just milking DLC at this point. don't take the magic out of what made the game very special.

make another RPG in a different universe, these guys are perfect for this kind of games. but don't start milking

I hope the approach they take is:

To expand the world outside the painting where E33 takes place. Either by focusing on a story about the Writers or a story involving a new set of Painters.
Doing something like a prequel taking place inside the same painting (like with Expedition 0, or something like that) would be dissappointing IMO.

Can I just say as a hyper enjoyer of FFTactics, VIII, and XII(if ya know ya know):

PLAY EXPEDITION 33 YOU WILL NOT BE SORRY IT IS THE GREATEST FINAL FANASY GAME EVER MADE

This is clearly what they would do and ...

if they're not careful it'll be Matrix 2 and 3. The bulk of the lifting with the story was just the mystery box of finding out the hidden secret. Does that mean they actually have a "real world" writers vs painters drama worth telling? I'm pretty skeptical. I'm expecting some Zion-style painter parties as they hide from the machines writers.

Who says it has to be a direct sequel, though? They can easily follow in a similar direction to Final Fantasy with each game being its own thing, having its own world, cast and story, while sharing similar mechanics and same names for some in-game things. Heck, if you will take some of the story developments on E33 into consideration, it imo feels like a very natural direction to expand this franchise

From the way it was worded, it sounded like they want to tell a story of another expedition. without going into spoilers, if its the same universe then we already know the outcome of this ( and its not fun even as an idea it self ).

now if its a completely different story, then yeah I am super excited. but not an extension of this one under a different squad

If they go in the direction of what was revealed about the world as a whole towards the end (I won't mention it here because it's MASSIVE spoilers and I don't want anyone accidentally spoiling it for themselves) then this can get *very* interesting.

Notice how he says "franchise" and not "universe". I'm thinking they go the Final Fantasy route of a new setting. I still have questions about E33's world, but like someone above said, that could go into Matrix sequel territory where the answers are underwhelming.

What? No it didn't.

Did you forget about the fire/their war against the Writers in the real world?

imo I think they'll have a very different game coming out. If "Clair Obscur" is the franchise name, they can make almost anything that involves themes of "Light & Dark". Pretty smart idea.

Honestly, I don't really see much room here for either a sequel or a prequel. Within this universe it would be really hard to create something that feels fresh.

Sure, they could go for a spin-off with side characters, but even then the tension would be limited.
IMO it'd make more sense to build a brand new IP and have total creative freedom instead of recycling the same twists again and again. On the other hand, the brand is already strong, so from a business perspective it's obviously the safer bet.

And if it's going to be another turn-based game, then I'd rather see a proper tactical RPG instead of that awkward dodge/parry hybrid. On higher difficulties the "turn-based" aspect boiled down to spamming dodge/parry anyway, since most encounters ended in one-shots (unless you had the shield perk, then maybe you'd survive). More status effects, group fights, and better overall balance would go a long way - especially since once you got Maelle in the party, you could basically one-shot everything.
