Anthony Weiner gets 21 months in prison in sexting case

Fucking disgusting. His sentence is a slap on the wrist, and a slap to the face for victims of abuse. The really sad thing is that this isn’t going to affect Weiner’s career as much as we’d hope. He’s going to come out of prison, cruise the television circuit, probably write a book or two, and make millions. Disgusting.

I mean it’s attempted rape

Fortunately or unfortunately we are a nation where you cannot prosecute for crimes that have not been committed at least to a point. He would have had to have been caught in the Act of actually about to have sex. This is probably a good thing if you think about how many more minorities will be in prison if you could prosecute for crimes that have not been committed. I take that back, our police already do that by planting stuff and false confessions

It was especially disappointing that even after so many details of his actions were made public, the first instinct for many was to lament the end of his public career. It's frustrating that this case lasted so long and has such a weak-toothed conclusion.

I think one thing to keep in mind when someone who you respect and trust betrays that trust, often people aren't regretting what could have been. They're mourning the loss of what they believed that person to be.

In my case, it's not "man I wish Anthony Weiner didn't do what he did" but "man, I wish he wasn't who he turned out to be."

This guy is such a weird one.

He pretty much has it all but can't fucking help himself.

He had a gorgeous wife, a top tier politicial career with ties to the most influential people in the US and so on.

Yet he continues to do the most stupid sexting shit possible. He has a mental disorder.

I never really followed this story when it broke . So umm.. He should be in jail longer t han 2 years. He will not learn from this and will .ske the same mistake again I bet.

Are there ways to punish him as well as keep him from recommitting once he gets out. We are able to completely ruin the lives of sex offenders keep them from ever living in a decent place keep them from ever getting a decent job and basically punishing them until their death keep them from internet access etc etc. Jail time is not the only way we punish them nor is it the most financially responsible way in a nation where we imprison so many that we lead the world. Trust me his life is f***** even when he gets out. His Fame will make him a pariah for the rest of his life and we don't have to spend an inordinate taxpayer money to make it be so

Yes, this is what's more important than the year and a half that he will be in prison for. The fact that he will be a registered offender, A known felon for the entirety of his lifespan. The man is done in terms of any career, family life, and public image. Once he gets out of prison, a worse prison awaits.

What does this have to do with anything? Nobody is even alleging that the police planted anything on Weiner, forced a false confession, or tricked him into sexting an underage girl. He did this all on his own with no help from anybody.

Almost two years of this man's life gone for sexting. Unbelievable.
For sending pictures of his penis to a kid? That really seems like a just punishment to you?

It would seem unjust if he

1) didn’t know her age or she consistently lied about it
2) didn’t ask her to “perform sexually” on a webcam while knowing she was underaged.

I would say it’s about eight given the circumstances. He probably got off light compared to most offenders, though. The unjust part is the “registered sex offender” part that likely follows, which serves as some kind of permanent scarlet letter even after people have served their time. IMO, it should be unconstitutional to restrict people’s rights after they have served out their punishment.

What a disgusting fucking idiot

Imagine working for his campaign when this shit was coming out poor fuckers. Careers ruined because this horny fuck couldn't keep it in his pants.

What a fucking motherfucking piece of shit.

Has a hot wife, career for the taking, and path to presidency if wanted. But no. Lets tweet dick pic to underaged girls. You fucker. I hope rats in prison chew your dick off.

Would he be less of a piece of shit if his wife was ugly and he cooked fries at McDonald's?

I never understand this mentality that the behavior is more excusable if your life sucks.

He had everything and threw it all, I don't think he's saying it's okay to be a pedo if you're poor.

I was commenting on the fact that you can't prosecute him for attempted rape in this case nowhere was I saying he was innocent. I was saying that we are a Nation where we prosecute against crimes committed not against crimes that haven't been committed. His crime was solicitation of a minor not attempted rape of a minor as well as some other criminal offenses. The stuff I said on the side was a sarcastic comment about how we imprison minorities based on crimes they didn't commit why make it easier to do so by allowing prosecution of individuals for crimes they didn't commit be made into law. Wiener commitred crimes that we can prosecute against we don't need to prosecute him for crimes he has not yet committed nor should we. This was in reply to someone who said that he should be charged with rape or attempted rape because that's what he would have done had he not been caught.

Counterpoint: those sentences were also too light. (Though reading the details, are very different circumstances.)

I don't see all those important different circumstances, especially considering it is actual sex vs sending pics, but I agree with your assessment.

Yet note how 8-10 years for murder is not that unusual. Given that as a scale, getting much longer sentence than in OP does feel an overkill to me.

You know what's really fucked up? In France or Sweden it wouldn't have been a crime. Italy or Germany? Legal if the girl is at least 14.

Europe, get your shit together.

Not that simple. Not even true I believe.
Possessing sexual images of a minor is still illegal.
You can, in theory, have sex with someone aged 15, but requesting a pornographic cam show would be a crime.

In the case of Austria, it's basically forbidden to use a lack of maturity, if I recall correctly. It's only legal if the girl understands the consequences and all that.
Sorry I don't recall details, it's been a long time since I looked that stuff up to settle an argument.
Most people don't even know it'd be legal.
