Great artwork, I like it, but I still think it's a little creepy.
Why can't the characters bodies carry more traits from the animals themselves? Just enough so it doesn't look like an animal head cut and sewn on a human body.
In the case of BlackSad, some do more than others, mostly though i think is to not get too distracting.
Is one thing to have a sketchy character with the head of a snake, try to stab you with a switchblade, is another to have the same character having to snake around the floor trying to bite you.
I guess it works in a context like the Jungle Book, because the setting is the jungle and the characters aren't driving cars and wearing clothes.
In Black Sad it would be more problematic to resolve.
Then, part of it is surely simply due to a personal design decision by the author.
My point is, though, i don't think it necessarily looks stupid, it's like a story with humans, where though you can give more life to the characters simply by adding the animal elements and using (or subverting) our idealistic ideas of each animal, into social archetypes.

Spiegelman's MAUS does something similar.
My problem with Black Sad is the same as what I've said about this topic in general.
They're all animals and follow the same style, and then suddenly there's very human looking cat women., and to me it kinda breaks the entire style in two.
The Sine Mora cast are the same way. /=,
There are plenty of animal looking female characters in BlackSad though.
I agree they cop-out a bit with John's love interests being more humanized cat ladies, but i think that's more to make the reader more comfortable with the idea.
