Anyone going to pick up Brothers in Arms tommrow?

I posted these impressions to the 'what are you playing' thread yesterday...

Played a game online today, no lag issues.

I'm nearing the end in single-player and -- I shit you not -- this is the best WWII game I've ever played. Why? It evokes the sort of intensity from the best combat sequences in Saving Private Ryan (dirt, grit, dust and all) or the super-scripted but immersive as hell instances of MoH and CoD, without resorting to woodenly scripted A.I. and events. Everything on the battlefield happens dynamically in real-time. So when your hands are shaking and you're hunkered down behind cover with rounds whizzing over your head, trying to think of a way to out flank that MG-42 typewriter of death, you know the chaos is real, and that you could get splayed any second.

It's just one hard ass firefight after the next. And I love the iron sight view for the guns here. When you pull the trigger, you almost feel the gun kick into your shoulder as you recoil and readjust for your next shot. In other words, it's just like firing a real gun. Best of all, there isn't any bullshit paper and dice rules about "enemies under cover will never die" because if you're a good shot with these M1 rifles, you can take them out. But it's hard, hence, you're better off using actual field tactics.

This game is about 500x better than Full Spectrum Warrior. If you love gritty military shooters, GET READY TO COUGH IT UP for BIA.
 
thnx for the impressions che i guess the single player shaped up well. I have a few questions about the multiplayer.

is it true that it only allows 4 player multiplayer?

oh and is there any co-op split screen or anything?
 
Well, I had it pre-ordered, but I'm getting it for sure now. Damn you Che and your impressions. But since you've spilled it, can you talk about how multiplayer works? Co-op?

Thanks for the impressions, I've been following this game for some time, and watching videos of the developer interviews and such. I was 50/50, but some friends of mine are hyped for the cool XBL experience. I reserved it some time ago, but was wondering how the final product would turn out. Now I'm salivating waiting to get my hands on it. This and Close Combat: First to Fight, look like very interesting military games.

And even though Full Spectrum Warrior was somewhat limited and short, it's still one of my fave military shooters this gen, so I'm REALLY looking forward to BiA.

Yeah, it's only 4 player max online, but each player gets to control 6 guys (split into two groups of three -- fire team and assault team). So in a full 4 player battle, you get 28 guys on the battle field... theoretically. I haven't actually tried 4 player online yet though. I will this afternoon.

You can also play co-op online or splitscreen (like, be on the same squad) although I didn't see co-op play for campaigns... but I could be wrong because I've been so engrossed with the single-player game.

The storyline itself isn't hitting me as hard as it should or something. Talking to Randy Pitchford during their demos, I would have thought the story would be pretty heavy... but so far, despite its "realistic" character portrayal, it's still schlocky Hollywood crap. Think Band of Brothers but with really bad writing.

Still, you seriously forget about all that crap once the bullets start flying. I haven't felt this sort of intensity in combat since like Operation Flashpoint (which also features an ironsight view).
 
Playing BIA with Gearbox as I post this msg... and I stand corrected: It's 4 player multiplayer, with each player controlling a fire/assault team.

Hmm, it's fun online, but glitchy and isn't as polished as the singleplayer mode.
 
I can't wait to pick this up tomorrow. Been looking forward to this game for a lonnnnnng time. For all you that are getting it on the PC, me, my brother, and a few others have started a BIA clan. Register in the forums please, we need more people.

Dammit, what a buzzkill. Unless the game magically gets a decent multiplayer mode (or they come out with a patch, a'la Quake II and add MP), I'm not getting the game. That's bullshit. I expect that any FPS coming out these days has a good online mode that allows you to play with >24 people. Four people and bots is bullshit.

You're kinda missing the point of the game though. Its supposed to be all about commanding your squad and trying to flank the enemy and such. Its not supposed to be like Medal of Honor where everyone runs around randomly like dumbasses lobbing grenades all over the place.
 
I'm not missing the point. I understand what BIA is, and it probably has an excellent single player. Maybe better than any other WWII FPS. Okay. However, they are crazy if they expect me to pay $50 to play through a single player game and then... that's it. A four person multiplayer is almost as good as not having one at all. If they want to have only four people with controllable bots as one mode, that's fine, but they could have at least whipped up a simple multiplayer mode that allowed 32 people to play, also. This game has been relegated to strictly bargain bin purchase: i.e., when it hits twenty dollars. I also predict the lack of real multiplayer will sink this game.

How does the PS2 version stacks up? I'm definitely getting it, but I just wanted to know if the only version I can get iturned out well compared to Xbox and PC.

Actually, ever since the game was announced, I had always thought of Dire Straits. But then I guess I was so used to it, that I completely forgot.

Damn fantastic album, though. Why Worry always makes me want to cry :(
 
Was very impressed at E3 and it's nice to hear it's better than FSW as a reference (which really was pretty terrible despite what many said), but I've played enough WWII shooters to last me a lifetime already. I'll pick it up when it's on the cheap which should be fairly soon I'm guessing.

The most fucked up thing about BIA is that its WWII setting works against itself, due to the backlash of gamers who are sick to death of the genre. It's actually a very -very- good combat simulator... as long as you're not expecting Halo 2. For how much it's doing, the AI is very impressive, and the claustrophobia of combat is perfectly replicated here. But everything moves to scale, which means you're not going to cross that street in two hops and a bound. There's one level where you have to lead your entire squad down this long causeway, and the only thing keeping you from doing so is half the fucking German army with their automatic weapons. It's one of the most beautiful levels in the game, as well as one of the most brutal. That's the sort of dichotomy inherent with BIA.
 
Is there a difficulty level? If not how hard is it?

I've been waiting for this game for SO long...and I'm happy I finally get it today after school. :)

I remember seeing a video for this a while ago, and it looked like some great FSW-styled fun, until the guy playing sent 4 guys in to shoot one german, and the german killed everybody. I'll have to wait to see if the AI is improved.
