Anyone still play Final Fantasy XI?

And if so, what server are you on?

Just picked this up on the cheap at CC, thought I'd give it a shot as it came free with my PS2 HDD ;)

Downloading patches right now :/

Another question: At what level should I look into Chains of Promethea?

Finally, before everyone tells me that World of Warcraft is better: Yes, I know. But I can't find it, my gaming PC is out of order (again) and this is here, now.

I tried to get this game working on my PS2 over the course of 3 days, about 10-11 months ago, IIRC. And never managed it. POL errors left and right.

My new computer arrives in less than a week, and I'll be playing WoW instead. Oh well.

I recently started playing this game a couple weeks ago with some friends. We're on the Valefor server.

I'm a lv 10 whm/5 blm tarutaru right now.

Most GA'ers seem to be on the Fairy server.

The first set of CoP missions are capped at level 30, and there's little other low-level content other than wandering around Carpenter's Landing (and hardly anyone goes there anyway). The average new player probably won't have a level 30 job until after about a month of play, so I would play for a month, see if you like it and pick up the expansion a little later.

I just went back to it after a five month break. My level 40 warrior is on hold while I level up subjobs. Right now I'm working on thief (just got Flee, it rocks!) and then I'll probably go back and do warrior to 55. Then I'll get my ninja sub up to at least 30 so I can dual wield axes from 55-60, then it's probably back to /THF until 74.

I might start working on beastmaster, though. I hear you can make good money farming and doing BCNMs as BST.

Most of us GAFers that are still playing are on Fairy like Azrael points out.

Azrael has the right thing going on, CoP is really for somewhat veteran and new players alike but it's pretty skewed towards Veteran players in terms of accessibility but aimed at low level folks due to the requirements. I wouldn't worry about CoP at all since you're just starting out. If you like the game after a month or so of playing, then maybe give it a shot.

Got the game for Xmas, and im in love with it :)

Im on Fairy btw, and currently Im a BLM37, SMN20, WHM17, RDM9, BRD7 and BST2 :P , i have the same Q tho, is CoP worth for me ?

I started around September. I'm on Phoenix, and have am lv55 PLD, lv48 DRG, lv30 WAR, lv 20 BLM, lv15 MNK, lv13 WHM, lv8 RDM, lv8 SMN.
I quit for a month over G1. (had several experiences where everyone got their item, then ditched me... ugh... got one item after ELEVENTH lot... had to kill almost a thousand G1 mobs, lol)
I haven't been able to play for over a week because my gaming PC has been unusable since I put a new ATI video card in it.

Sorry if this is rather simple, but how do I figure out what server I'm on/get the server I want? Anyone kind enough to offer a world pass and offer an explanation on how to use it?

The server you are on is displayed when you log in.
It'll say something like "Welcome to _______".
You enter a worldpass when you create a new character, so you'll have to delete you current char if you want to use one.

I've been off for a while...but for some reason a new college semester always seems to make me want to play it again.

Thundercleese may be returning from the grave again...soon...

I haven't been playing since November, but I'm going back later this month and I plan to get back into it.

My character is named "Kytrinn," and I'm on Fairy with most of GA. Female Hume, 30 WHM/20 BLM/12 THF/etc etc. Nothing impressive considering I've had it since March '04, but I've missed a lot of time due to patch hassles last spring/summer (luckily Square Enix ironed those out), and I've just taken way too much time off from the game recently... I haven't made much progress since August, to be honest. :(

But I'm hoping that'll all change later this month!

As everyone said, you should definitely wait and make sure you like the game before bothering. But, I'd actually wait until you're Level 40~, as the Chains of Promathia missions start out with a Level 30 cap (Promyvion), and then shoot up to a cap of 40 soon after... So while you'd be able to join in relatively low at first, you'd hit a wall after a few missions.

So yeah, IMO, you should definitely wait a month (or more, depending on how much you play) and figure out if you like the game enough to pluck down 20$ for more of it. ;)

Eh? Why do you want to go into this game thinking "Oh WoW is better anyway."? At least give it a chance, you may dig it more as it does a lot of things differently.

Ploid still here/playing?
I don't see him post much anymore, but yeah, I see him on POL regularly.

I hate this game. Only japanophiles like Scott and Shouta play it because they suck at good RPGs.

I can get you a copy if you're interested. My local stores are stocked to the gills.

Level 76.

My name is Rorschach on Fairy. Say "Hi" if you see me :P

Well, to be fair, I've never played an MMORPG, period. I played PSO, but that's about the extent of my experiences. I don't know exactly what makes WoW "better" per se, but I know that several of my closer friends tend to enjoy it more than FFXI. And honestly, if I find FFXI enjoyable, that's even more incentive to avoid WoW, as I'd like to retain some semblance of a normal life.

Besides, I just wanted a nice way of telling the haters to fuck off.

They're both good, and they both focus on vastly different things. It really depends what you're looking for. I personally find myself wishing for elements of FFXI in WoW and vice versa.

They also have their faults.

FFXI, for example, is a (unintuitive) timesink too often, the economy is wonky, and you have to play with the Japanese. Which, if you stick around long enough, you'll very easily see the plight in.

WoW, for example, well... half of the game is broken, unbalanced or a combination of the two. It also has the worst customer service of anything, ever. It's also too goddamn accessible for it's own good, resulting in pretty anti-social play for the majority of the game.

On the bad side, now that I posted this, both camps will proceed to track me down, and kick my ass. :(

I still play and I'm on Titan, one of the smaller pop servers and in pretty cool mid-to-high level Linkshell. I'm a 54 Dragoon, 45 Bard, 38 White Mage and 37 Warrior. Still having a blast with the game.

The CoP expansion is mostly mid-level content, you'd have to have at least one level 40 job and a levelled subjob to participate in the content, so its not worth persuing off the bat. I'd wait 2-3 months into playing to get it, if you stick with it that long.

Enjoy the HDD for what little you'll get to use it for, outside of FFXI its just a glorified memory card.

Ugh, I really enjoyed FFXI the second time I played it, but stopped to try City of Heroes. CoH unfortunately barely lasted a month for me, but now I'm torn between starting one of the two up again. Or WoW.

WHY DOES IT GOT TO BE SO DAMN TOUGH?!

FFXI was my first MMORPG but its prepped me for any other MMORPGs. What I mean is FFXI makes you go through the biggest fuggin time sinks I've ever seen or heard from any other game. Getting a party together to gain experience 60+ = Hours of waiting. Trying to get a set party and everyone show up on time = Near to impossible. Bleh.

I'll see what I can do =O.

Worldpass is 5340079847

5 uses. You input the server name (Fairy) you want to get on and input this number for the worldpass.

My character name is Lenneth so toss me a /tell when you get on.

I'm sure that the FFXI players here are info whores for the game but if you need some info or a video of some event, let me know.

Uh Nightbreeze.

3 days of gaming in FFXI is not going to set you back at all:P The game slows down a TON as you level.

And honestly, if I find FFXI enjoyable, that's even more incentive to avoid WoW, as I'd like to retain some semblance of a normal life.

In my experience, FFXI is more likely to destroy your life than WoW :) Massive, massive time-sinks. Yet, I enjoyed XI far more than WoW. I'm still tempted to jump back into it, I just wish Square didn't have an absolutely retarded policy of deleting chars after 3 months and invalidating serials.

Well, I bought the PC version when it was released in NA. Played for a few months, then cancelled my content IDs (but kept my PlayOnline ID). Tried to reinstall the game a couple months later, but got a PlayOnline error that said my serials were invalid. Called SE support and got a very convoluted explanation about the serials being invalidated after three months if you didn't have any active content IDs during that time. Still doesn't entirely make sense to me, but whatever. I had bought a PS2 hard drive on sale in the meantime, so I used the serials from that copy of the game to re-register my PC copy. I quit XI again last fall, three months have passed, and I imagine my toons are gone again and the serials are worthless as well. I haven't tried reinstalling the game on my PC or PS2 though, so I'm not entirely sure if the serials were invalidated this time or not.

The serial number issue aside, I wonder what Square's reasoning is for deleting the toons after three months? I think that discourages a lot of people from coming back to the game after they've left it. I know that I like to go back to MMOs periodically after taking a break from them to see what new stuff has been added, but having to restart all your toons is a major disincentive to get into the game again (especially one with lots of time-sinks like XI). FFXI is the only MMO I've played where the provider actually deletes your toons that quickly.

See I really wish I hadn't posted that now, 'cause now I just have flashes of DCharlie's home life. Let's just say that 'leveling up' has a whole new connotation.

Carbuncle, though I wouldn't be opposed to starting over if someone would send me a World Pass so I could hop on Fairy.

I'm on Carbuncle too..but I don't think I'd want to start over.. I don't play all that often, so getting my RDM to 30 was a huge deal for me - it took me forever!

Did you switch to Fairy already?
Anyone else on Carbuncle?

one :lol doesn't cut it, it needs to be :lol x 234234234234234.

this is sad but true folks. FFXI and mmorpgs steal women away from men everyday. But its funny, until it happens to you.

It happened to me.... It can happen to you too.
