AP: Clinton clinches Democratic Nomination

This has probably been posted, but I wonder if the Clinton camp decided to let this break tonight because they were nervous about California.

Obviously, she wins the nomination whether or not she wins California, and obviously she's going to win a ton of delegates tomorrow anyway, but the media narrative will always be about which ever state was the closest, and who won it. Especially for one as big as California. Ending it tonight pre-empts any bump or story Sanders might get from winning CA (assuming he would, even though I think she's favored.) This takes the wind out of those potential sails.

Announcing early does Clinton no favors I don't think.

Wow who could've seen this coming.

To be honest, I did not see the AP calling it tonight.
So ironically, your post is sorta correct and not sarcastic ;)

AP is stupid. Bernie's statement is right, super delegate votes are not locked in and pledged delegates have yet to put Hillary over the top. It's just dumb to make a call prior to tomorrow's primaries.

She is going to be the nominee, but let the process play out.

Even if you hate Hillary, get off your butt and vote. Vote local. Vote senate. Vote congressional. Vote for props in your state (looking at you California 08'). Vote.

VOTE. You get one chance every few years to make a profound impact on this country. GO DO IT.

I do every election! Even the dumb local ones with one unopposed candidate.

WA just makes it too easy not to.

Bernie has been done for awhile. His job is to hang around and annoy until he gets some kind of concessions in the name of unity. He will also be able to hold onto his platform until the convention.

Clinton was going to beat Trump even before his latest blunders.

For the 22 year old me who stomped his little heart out for Hillary in '08, shed some tears and sucked it up when she lost, then gleefully joined the Obama campaign, this is absolutely cathartic.

Congratulations to Hillary Clinton for making history. Congratulations to the Democratic Party for having two iconic nominees in a row. Truly the progressive party of the U.S.

Now, to get drunk and call my fwb.

Did you take issue with Obama claiming the nomination in '08 before the convention? The primaries were over and neither had enough pledged.

So really, people aren't dedicated to a political revolution unless they vote how you see fit? People are entitled to exercise their right to vote in any way they choose, whether you agree with it or not.

Anyway, congratulations to Hillary!

Yes really. People are not dedicated to a 'political revolution' (whatever that means in a practical sense anyway) if they are willing to abstain from an election if their ideal candidate didn't make it. They are actively ignoring that Sanders and Hillary's platform has a hell of a lot more in common than not. It's a thing in the adult world of politics that we call compromise and it's pretty damn important to our political process.

If they are living in a swing state then it's even worse because an abstained vote is effectively a vote for Trump. The guy who will appoint supreme court justices that will kill all the advances we've made in the past 8 years and destroy the progressive movement for at least two or three decades.

I know this has all been explained 100's of times in the past few months so I'm probably wasting my time. However, I have patience and will continue to do this. If one person reads, understands, and changes their mind then it's all worth it to me.

Hillary will not have any issues beating Trump.

I'm going to be nervous between now and November. The fact that Trump got so far is scary.

I know the Electoral College Math does not favor the GOP at all, but I'm still nervous.

Only thing that brings me some comfort is imagining Trump's concession speech. I will be witness to the most salty thing this planet has ever seen.

I still don't quite understand what's so dire about a Hillary Presidency. If anyone wishes to give me the bullet-point list, feel free, I might learn a thing or two.

On-topic though: Tear Trump a new one!

She's not as attractive to some independent and there is fear that she will not energize young people and overall voter turnout which favors dems. She's also not personally liked by a decent portion of the independent electorate, on the other hand she has enough well liked surrogates to help make up for that. A really good VP pick can help quite a bit as well.

Basically she's an issues candidate and trump is a personality candidate. Some crazies this time around believe saying stupid shit off cuff is more important than the actual issues.

Meh.

Knew this was the case since March. Not really inclined to vote for Clinton. I will probably just vote for Tammy Duckworth and my congressman.

Now that the simple pleasantries are done with, let the show begin! On one side you have an immovable wall, on the other you have an unstoppable avalanche. Let us witness this conundrum that plagues America.

It really doesn't make a difference.
She was never going to get the nomination from pledged delegates alone due to the proportional nature and the opponent staying in long after victory was plausible.

The exact same conditions apply today as tomorrow.

There is little precedent in waiting literally until the convention before declaring a presumptive candidate. Hillary apparently has the count tonight and of course will likely crush the count tomorrow, so it kind of makes sense to declare it for her.

Clinton would have preferred this report to come out tomorrow. It's inevitable, but it looks better when it happens after major primaries.

There's a tinge of worry on my part. But I think we got this pegged. ^_^

Yeah, we really don't want to fuck his up by being overconfident and cocky. If Bernie can just tuck his tail between his legs and let Hill and Obama destroy Trump.

If he would swallow his pride and stump for her without demanding ridiculous concessions it'd be even better.

Did you take issue with Obama claiming the nomination in '08 before the convention? The primaries were over and neither had enough pledged.

These primaries are still in progress. Once Hillary's pledge count is impossible -- not merely improbable -- to overcome, that's when to make the call. given that a good chunk of people are still waiting to cast their votes. I don't go as far as Bernie and say you have to wait for the convention, a pledged delegate victory will ensure that the super delegates do not change their current positions.

AP calling it now is like an NFL announcer calling the game with 30 seconds left to go, because all the winning team needs to do is spike the ball take a knee.

i think it was just on Friday that Rachel Maddow was talking about how uneventful the day AP announced Trump's presumptive nominee and pontificated about how it could be the same way for Clinton.

These news outlets don't care about the campaigns or the candidates or the voters, they care about the math and the math shows that Hillary Clinton is the presumptive nominee.

Yep. It won't change anything but you can bet they were setting up an announcement after a win in NJ/California tomorrow. Naughty, naughty AP.

In the history of the Democratic party, we have never not counted Super Delegates as they announce their support. Never, ever, ever. Not one time.

It's already there, man. It's been there for weeks/months. The game clock doesn't need to be 0 to call it. This is garbage time. Fun for fantasy enthusiasts, but ultimately meaningless to the outcome.

We have weed on the ballot so it's pretty much a guaranteed huge turnout over here. So far about 5 states are leaning that way. Support your activists! Weed = Votes!

Bernie really needs to just concede but he's been banging the "we'll take this all the way to the convention" drum so hard it's hard to give in and be a gracious loser at this point I guess. Even today on the way home from work npr had sound bites of him restating his intent to keep it going. Bern, you've really fucked yourself for the next opening 8 years from now. Hillary waited her turn, but I can see how you may feel like that's not a luxury you may enjoy.

Yeah, the Hillary camp did not want this at all.

It's not good for turnout tomorrow, but let's face it: the people that were planning to go out and vote for her on Tuesday are still going to do it. It's the night before and most of her voters probably won't even hear this news.

In this case, though, the super delegates haven't announced support. The AP did a "survey."

You know I thought I might be a little sad at this moment, like this would be bitter sweet for me as a recent Bernie supporter. But it's not. If anything I feel relief, I'm just glad it's over (well for reasonable people). Sanders really soured on me in the end.

AP calling it now is like an NFL announcer calling the game with 30 seconds left to go, because all the winning team needs to do is spike the ball.
But even though they're down 14 theres always the chance that the quarterback spikes the ball wrong and it flies out at just the right angle and another player catches the ball and runs past all the defense and gets a touch down and then get the onside kick and then get another touch down with a hail Mary pass to tie it and then go into overtime and score more points to WIN

Out of sheer morbid curiosity, I'm trying to imagine the internet if something were to happen and Bernie won at the convention.

Eh, give him a few days. I wouldn't concede today either. Now, Wednesday is another matter.

It's not good for turnout tomorrow, but let's face it: the people that were planning to go out and vote for her on Tuesday are still going to do it. It's the night before and most of her voters probably won't even hear this news.

Because they all live in caves, I suppose.

Bern, you've really (screwed) yourself for the next opening 8 years from now. Hillary waited her turn, but I can see how you may feel like that's not a luxury you may enjoy.

You think Bernie was thinking about running in 2024 as an 82 year old man? Seriously? This is quite literally 2016 or bust for his presidential aspirations.

I think he should concede as soon as the last primary closes, certainly, but there is no need for him to drop out now.

i find something very wrong with articles like this and people who keep supporting it.

Yes, she is very likely going to cinch the last actual delegates she needs before the convention. Yes the super delegates will likely not change. But it has not happened yet!
The reason people keep saying it's rigged in her favor is that the whole thing looks like it's rigged in her favor. Pledged SD's before the first caucus and articles like this just reinforce that idea.

Disclaimer: I do support Bernie, but I have absolutely no issue with Clinton.
