Do you have any Targets or Wal-Marts around? The Best Buys and Apple stores around here were completely sold out, but I had some good luck with Target. I was able to get one last Saturday, and another on Monday.
I didn't even realize either sold them. I will def check today. Thanks. Worse cast scenario I call that macconnections place or just order it online finally.

You should use the links in that thread to check stock before heading out. The results won't be 100% real-time, but it should be fairly accurate. Also you should check more than once during the day, as I've seen Target go from out of stock to available mid-day.

Edit: Beaten. This link has a way to check Wal-Mart stock.

can i video record 1 hour lectures on this thing? is this possible?
It would definitely work as far as storage, but I don't think anyone has done battery tests for shooting video.

For comparison, an hour of streaming Netflix would use 10-15% of the battery, so in theory, it should work.

Tested did a battery rundown yesterday streaming video over wifi - it ran 15h 28m
Shooting video wouldn't use more battery than streaming, right? Sounds like you would run out of storage well before battery.

would someone mind posting a picture of the white ipad and your impressions? i found a white one but i'm not convinced i want it yet.

Anyway, I'm loving this thing! I've got it tethered to my 3GS iPhone and it's working brilliantly. So far my only beef is that I can't find a comfortable way to use the keyboard in either horizontal or vertical mode. How do you guys type? With both thumbs or one handed? Is there a technique I should learn to make it easier on myself?

i tend to flip the ipad to portrait mode and just type with my thumbs if i'm not at a comfy couch. otherwise i just lay it down on my lap and type away. the smart cover helps if you like to lean back on a couch or chair.

Sweet... the target stock links are pretty well updated. Last night my local store had none, early this morning they had none, about an hour ago they were in stock. Picked me one up!

Not the best picture, but here you go.

Well, Air Video just got replaced as my favorite app. StreamToMe is fucking incredible! It may as well be called "Air Everything"...what a boss app.

the thing I liked about air video was the offline conversion

1. Wow, Apple managed to get FutureShop and BestBuy in line for a 5pm launch.
2. Seemingly known to few, you can order it off the FS website right now (?) for pickup. Possibly even tomorrow.

On the Apple website I mean. Word on the street is that they don't let you cancel once you've made the order. Does anyone know if that's true?
No, you can cancel, at least in the US.

Do you think it's worth trying to purchase one for pickup in store tomorrow? I'm really considering it..

2. Doesn't seem to work anymore. You click on the item and a popup comes up saying In store 5PM

Ah, weird. It let me add to cart when I posted. I guess it was too much to expect them to be totally prepared. (I'm surprised they're prepared at all, really...)

well thanks to that item locator stuff you guys gave me, and that picture of the white ipad i am now a proud owner of a 32gig ipad 2. thanks.

now i have other questions :)

1.is there a case similar to the smart cover apple sells that covers the back?

2.how do i go about tethering this thing to my iphone 4, i'm on verizon if this helps. i have unlimited data so i'm not too worried about that aspect.

3. do you guys recommend a dock? or is it not worth it?

Taken with my 3GS iPhone, so sorry about the quality:

I was almost through the checkout process and then ended up with this:

[ERROR RESOURCE KEY MISSING : Category : ValidationMessages ; Key : Please note that one or more items were removed from your order because the product is no longer sold.]

2- You activate "Connection sharing" on your iPhone4, configure the SSID and password and on the iPad under Settings -> Wifi, you select the SSID from your phone, enter the password and that should do it.

How can I disable pull to refresh in iCab? The previous release said they added something to disable it but I sure as hell don't see it.

if the settings aren't in-app, check your general settings. pretty retarded that some settings aren't just contained within apps.

To those talking about stream to me vs AirVideo I have and use both.

The current advantage disadvantages are very few but can make or break your decision. I hope one day either app will have all the available features.

Stream to me: Does not use Airplay yet. Has an awesome mac client for free to watch video via Mac OS X and also plays photos and music libraries.

AirVideo: Works with Airplay, just updated to also include Airplay backgrounding, meaning you can use other apps while streaming to appletv, or have it's screen off.

If airvideo gets itunes and iphoto library support, and a mac client I can stop using stream to me. If Stream to me gets Airplay and backgrounding support then i can quit airvideo. Until then I am the man of two video apps.

Question for you all, based on the Japan issues and potential iPad back-up, would it be wise to order my iPad 2 now, when I was planning to get one at the end of April? They don't charge your credit card until ship right?

EDIT: Also, how do the Verizon 3G plans work and how much are they? I have verizon now for my Droid X with unlimited data, no way to add an iPad on to that right? :P

If you order now you may not get one until the end of April, so might as well do it now...unless funds are tight until then. It might ship earlier for all we know.

If it's like ATT 3G plans are month to month pay as you go with auto renewal, but you can cancel at any time. You can tether with your Droid but you'll probably need to pay an extra $20 or so to get tethering added onto your phone plan, assuming your Droid can do tethering. It won't be unlimited for the tethering, although I'm not sure how they check that.

What the what?  This needs to be optional.
Yeah I have no problem with fancy stuff, but anything that does really really needs a easily accessible "view normal site" button somewhere.

I use thumb typing in portrait mode. I'm used to this from my mobile phone and I'm faster of the bat. Holding the iPad this way is now tolerable with the new design of the iPad 2. Some folks will suggest that you should try touch typing on the landscape keyboard and you'll get used to it after "a few weeks". I believe this is a waste of time; the landscape keyboard takes up more screen estate and it wont be as good as typing on a proper full featured keyboard. There is a reason that Jobs et al liked to denigrate the keyboards on netbooks as small and cramped before the iPad came along. Which ever one you pick, make sure to keep the keyboard clicking sounds on as that feedback is very helpful.

(p.s. Anybody else notice that stuff below the toolbar in iCab, directly below the bookmark icon? What's up with that?)
I got used to landscape typing in a few minutes, I can do around 60-80wpm in it. The keyboard is landscape is actually really close to full size...cause it's not a full keyboard, they didn't have to shrink it down to fit all the extra keys from a regular keyboard. The main thing with either keyboard is to just hit the keys without thinking too much and hope the autocorrect does it's thing (annoyingly the iPad autocorrect doesn't seem as aggressive as the iPhone sometimes).

As for iCab, do you mean that little 6 dot grid icon? That's Quickstarter, it's kind of like Top Sites in desktop Safari, except with manual entries (it doesn't auto populate, you just "add to Quickstarter" like you would a bookmark).

Hey gaf whats the bst case for the iPad 2? I have the $40 Targus case and I don't like it that much. I'm looking for something that will also let me use it as a stand. Also, will stream to me allow me to download and save files that I transcode to my iPad so I could watch it later?
Depends how much you need a case and how much you need a stand. If you just need a stand that's easy to carry around, that's basically what the Smart Cover is. If you need a case...I don't know. StreamToMe doesn't do downloading.

They must be using technology from the future.
Technically it is from the future relative to the iPad release (although realistically I'm sure all the parts were available and Apple was just going with the cheapest for extra profit).

Depends on streaming and video decoding vs writing to flash constantly, powering the camera, feeding the screen live, and the video encoding...and maybe more screen brightness (since you'll probably be moving around more and might have to deal with more lighting conditions).

Pictures already posted, so I'll just post impressions. I like it. It sort of makes the screen fill the space better since the black gives the effect of a big ass empty space border (like black bars on widescreen) whereas the white is more of a blatant frame, the content seems closer to the edge with it. I've heard others say it's distracting but I (and others) haven't had a problem with it, it's a big ymmv thing.

I used my old iPad case temporarily with it, and in there it looked like ass though. The black wrap around the edge with the white bezel just didn't look good to me.

The last few versions have it but I don't have anything to test it out with. You have to go into the settings (hit the right blue arrow next to a video) and change the video player. No clue if it supports background AirPlaying though, I know the standard (non AirPlay) player does for music.

Anyone have suggestions on guitar-connection dongles/kits for Garage Band? What should I be prepared to spend? I'm thinking ~$40ish.

The only one I'm aware of (besides iRig which only works with it's respective app AFAIK) is $90. It's the Apogee JAM guitar adaptor and it's available from Apple's site but it doesn't ship for 3-4 weeks which sucks. Guess I should just put my order in. At one point it was 2-3 so idk if it's delayed or just backed up.

I already own Air Video and have for a year. I only got around to using it when I got my mini. I use both Air Video and Plex at the same time as well as Rowmote Pro for controlling and viewing everything on my Mac mini.

StreamToMe looks nice too, but I don't see anything I would want that I can't do already. And I don't care about music. Since all the music I'd want is already on my iPod/iPad, and I already have Airfoil Speakers on my iDevices. I also have all my iPhoto images on my iDevices as well and never need to view them anyway.

Since I use Plex for a nicely structured media server with all my TV and movies and Air Video for "everything else".

IRig connector works with everything except the Peavey guitar app because the Peavey adaptor handles crosstalk differently. I think the Apogee interface has the potential to be the best because it uses the dock connector and bypasses the average internal amp on the iPad but I've not tested it yet, I'll buy one and review it when I can.

I'd definitely appreciate a review, thinking of getting one myself at some point.

Is the iPad2 still due in UK tomorrow? I think I'll leave it a month or so, or at least until i can just stroll into an apple store and pick one up no stress. The general verdict is that it's worh the upgrade from iPad1? I read somewhere, I think on here, that the screen has a flex to it, was that true?

Might have to wait more than a month until it becomes easy to buy, hopefully not though.

The glass flexes...but I wouldn't know that from regular use. I didn't even know it could flex until I tried squeezing it in just now. I still have my old iPad so I'll test that out later, but I've never tried doing that on there either so I never would've noticed either way.

tired of hunting NYC

placed an order for an 32 gb black wi-fi model

see you dudes in a month

It actually isn't that hard to get one in NYC. I was talking to an employee at the UWS Apple store and he said they get in a shipment almost every day. If you REALLY want one, it's best to just suck it up and go wait in line early one day. Also, I know various Targets have some too - as I type, 4 Targets in the area have 32 gig black wifi models in stock.

That did it. Thanks. So stupid to never know where an option is.

Hmm, so 3-4 weeks for an iPad 2. They bill when shipped right? I had planned to get one in late April, maybe I should order it now.

Also, what is up with the 3G costs for Verizon? I pay $30 for unlimited web with my Verizon plan now, I wish I could just add the iPad 2 on that.

Sounds like something to test out later. I'll just leave it recording and see how long it lasts. I'll do the iPod touch at the same time for benchmarking.

Though first I'll have to remove some files to make space. How much space does an hour take up? Been a while since I recorded a long video on my iPod. I only have a 16GB iPad.

Just cancelled my order on the Apple Store because Best Buy called me to let me know that my reserve is in.

Does anyone know if The Daily loads noticeably faster on the iPad 2? It takes ages to get off the splash screen for me and page swipes are laggy - I'm not sure if it's a drive speed issue or if the new CPU would make the app faster.
