You can use 4 finger gestures to enable certain actions, similar to Apple's trackpads. On the iPad, 4 fingers swiped left or right switches between open apps, a swipe up reveals the multitasking bar and a pinch returns you to the home screen. The gestures entirely do away for the need of the home button and speed up the whole experience by a surprising amount.
They're a huge improvement over abusing the home button, and I've had absolutely no trouble with them in 'beta' form. They could easily be enabled by default in 4.3, but I guess they want to save progress so significant for 5.

Are gestures enabled through 'settings' or do I need some nefarious trickery?
You need the newest version of the free Xcode 3 and 10 minutes with a Mac running Snow Leopard, essentially to signal to the iPad it's a development unit, which curiously enough can be done without an iOS developer account. They can then be enabled in settings.

Edit: Beaten, just.

Cross-posting from iPhone 4 thread:

Video of iOS 5 in the wild? I'm in a class right now so I obviously can't watch it. Someone may want to make a thread about it if it's real:

http://www.9to5mac.com/62499/white-iphone-caught-in-the-wild-running-ios-5-with-expose-multitasking/

From the looks of things, iOS 5 loses the Spotlight search menu from the iOS 3/4 days and the iOS 4 multitasking UI and instead sports a new Expose multitasking page with a Spotlight menu at the top of the display. Really cool stuff happening here.

Update: We’ve found a new video from the same source, this time showing off some of the device’s hardware: it’s 64 GB and obviously a prototype based on the camera and buttons designs. Oh, iOS 5 brings a brand-new home screen folders interface… it’s awesome!

Why we think it’s could be iOS 5: This particular phone is running an Apple-internal application called “Radar” in addition to a game called “Tough Fighter.” If you’re not familiar, Touch Fighter is a game Apple actually built to show off the iPhone’s accelerometer and graphics performance at one of their early SDK keynotes. Maybe they’ll be showing off the Gyro mixed with some 9X the graphics performance in Touch Fighter. Some of the settings menus also look pretty internal.

Could this be the “better-iPhone-4″ iPhone 5? It looks really snappy…

Update 2: Facebook integration is here!

WOW. That is pretty awesome. The spotlight screen is one of the most under-used screens on my phone, good use of real estate.

Also, Apple needs to declare war on Vietnam for these leaks.

Just a quick question for anyone who has used both an iPad 1 and 2: I know the screen is the same resolution and the new one is brighter, but does the appearance seem any different with pictures? (the colors, sharpness, etc)

When I look at my ipad 1 it seems a little washed out and I was hoping the 2 might be better.

Thanks for anyone who can help me with this. I've searched a lot online and I get a lot of mixed results.

So what the PlayBook does? Sounds cool. I'm not a fan of the home button.

Have you compared your iPad screen with others? It shouldn't appear washed out (are your brightness settings up?).

Yes, the brightness settings are up. I think I'm just spoiled by my IPhone 4. Not that I'm expecting that kind of resolution, but it would be nice if the colors popped more like the iPhone and the MBP. If you put the two next to each other it's like the colors on the iPad are duller - I'm not sure how else to explain it. I know that there was one article online where they said that even though the iPad 2 didn't have the iPhone 4's screen, it came awfully close when looking at how it was implemented.

There were reviews saying that the new iPad seemed brighter than the old one, and I was hoping that would help with it.

I'm not trying to be nitpicky, I was just really hoping that the iPad 2 would have brought over the retina display or something higher.

I think part of my issue is how iPhoto optimizes the pics when it syncs them onto the iPad and they are fuzzy when looking at the originals elsewhere. I'm getting the iPad to be a digital family photobook, and since I've started dabbling with photography I notice these things more.

Guys i always wanted to know if thos TV APPs for Ipad 2 are really free, like CRACKLE, can you truly see tv shows for free without paying any membership?

Which apps? Crackle is indeed free, Hulu Plus is $7.99/month, Netflix is $7.99/month. Keep in mind, those subscriptions cover multiple devices, not just iPad.

I can't wait to try Crackle when I get home.

Question is, do they work outside the US?

Ok one problem I'm running into is google calendar, anyone use this everyday and know a great app for it? I sync the cal app, but I can't edit that when I'm using this at school or work. I tried the google app but it's not ideal, lots of tapping when I just need to go to one event. Arg.

Just tried Crackle in Canada on an iPad OG.

Selection sucked, interface was a little slow, videos constantly buffered and didn't look good, half the content on the service was trailers and because of the way titles are truncated you can't tell the content is a trailer or preview until you actually click it.

Thumbs down.

iTunes gave me a pop-up asking me to have my iPad send information to Apple. I had 'Do Not Ask Again' check marked but accidentally hit Ok instead of No. How can I change it to not send information out or get the pop-up back. I've tried resetting warnings but it still doesn't appear when I sync.

itunes settings > advanced tab > reset all dialog warnings.

The first hit is always free. Don't worry. Soon it will have in-app movie purchases and subscription plans like everyone else.

You have GOT to be fuckin kidding me. I just updated my iPad to use the new 4.3.2 software and it crashed. Now I gotta restore, it's going to take forever.

Just tried it and also restarted iTunes after resetting but the pop-up still won't come back.

I just messed around in itunes and discovered that one of the options when you right click on the ipad in the itunes source list is to "reset warnings". that should do it.

Haha, true. Anyway, Crackle appears to be shit. Half the shows are "minisodes". Who wants to watch 4 minutes of a show? Fuck off, Sony.

Got it to pop-up again. Thanks!

Any one-button upload JB apps for facebook? I just want to upload photos to my facebook account with the press of a button instead of loading the FB app. Android got this part right.

edit: oops, I'm in the iPad 2 thread. Looking for an iPhone JB solution.

Pretty cool, some places pointing out it might actually be an iOS 4 beta of some sort (it has an older version of some icon). Looks nice but one issue I see with it (in that implementation) is that a lot of screens are basically white boxes with just the app name as the distinguishing feature.

My iPad 2 has a warmer color temperature than my iPad 1, and can go to a lower brightness level. Maybe a little brighter but if so it's not as noticeably so. Nothing major otherwise that I've noticed.

So can iPad 2 skype video chat + text chat no problem? Is it viable to just get an iPad 2 3G with a data plan and use skype to substitute for a text plan? That's cheaper than having a phone right? Then the only issue is figuring out a way to make the iPad 2 portable enough to carry everywhere. Maybe some kind of iPad jacket pouch?

I SHOULD be receiving my Miniot Wooden iPad Smart Cover soon.

Not sure. They needed 15 days of processing after an order, and my order says it takes up to 3 weeks plus shipping. I got the order form about 15 days once the processing was done. I don't know if thats 3 addition weeks, or 3 weeks from the 30th of may which is listed as my order date on the order form where the 3 weeks is shown.

If it's not 3 additional weeks, which if I'm reading it right, I should have it in the next 10 days or so. At 3 weeks will be tomorrow, and I imagine shipping shouldn't be more than 10 days or so.

All right. Going to try to exchange my red smart cover at the Apple Store. The damage of every day use has made it looked like I have rubbed it against sand paper. I take care of my stuff so well, no rough use at all. The leather is just too soft and susceptible to damage, especially at the price.

Is one dead/stuck pixel enough to get another replacement? I hate to be picky, but my first one had a light leak and this one has the pixel. I'd rather have the light leak, but at 600 I don't want either. Am I going to get looks in asking for a replacement?

So what are the generally accepted 'must have' apps that are native to iPad? I've gone and got Sword & Sworcery (Amazing), Flipboard & GQ but a lot of apps that I have on my iPhone don't seem necessary on the iPad or don't have a native app (Skype :/).

What's GQ?

I find Dropbox really helpful. Infinity Blade seems like a good game and looks great.
