My wife got a smart cover with hers. It's the first thing she asked about when I told her I could get her an iPad on Monday—"Can I get one of those covers?"

That's so crazy haha. An accessory being one of the big selling points...Apple is genius. I'll agree, though. A friend of mine brought his new white iPad 2 over to the house the other day. My wife had been sort of indifferent about iPad but when she saw the functionality of the smart cover, it sold her. Also some app that made Google Reader look freaking awesome (can't remember which one it was..made it into a magazine basically).
Is that Flipboard? cool app. I just got beejive on here for all my IM stuff- the ipad is slowly but surely replacing my laptop as my main net device.

Yes! That's it.

I really wish you didn't need a laptop or PC to use an iPad. She would sell her laptop in a heartbeat if you still didn't need to sync up (along with my iPod touch).

You can buy 2 per trip, but there is no purchase limit per customer. They tried to limit purchases last year, but they got bad publicity, especially from the story of this gaffer.

Last year:
Credit card only
Apple ID required (I think)
2 per customer

This year:
Cash allowed
Apple ID not required
No limit per customer

Yup. someone should update that thread to show exactly what the results are of letting those limitations go.

Are the backups mandatory? I mean, the itunes account keeps track of the apps I've installed right?
No, yes. But if you somehow lose everything, need to replace your iPad or get a new iOS device, the backup restores everything instead of you having to individually redownload and install each item all over again.

Cool beans, thanks.
Don't forget, updates are sizeable too. Internal drives are so cheap these days you could add a terabyte for the price of a pack of fags, saves a lot of time & effort in the long run.

The Daily for $1/wk or NYT for $5/wk?

Haha, NYT wins that battle. I posted this in the actual thread, but I'm in for the tablet subscription. I don't read news anywhere but my iPad anyway.

Bought a black leather Smart Cover the other day. I'm using it with a BookBook case for the time being, that I kept from my original iPad, but I really want some protection for the back. Been looking around for what's available currently and I found some decals at www.icarbons.com that covers the whole back of the device, even the edges.

Ordered the white carbon to go with my white iPad, hopefully it gets there by the weekend!

iPad 1 owners who upgraded to iPad 2.. worth it?
Eh. Kinda. But it's not worth going crazy to upgrade.

I got only $450 for my iPad 1 and paid over $700 for the new one with the cover. The camera is horrible and I have an iPhone 4 so I'll never Facetme on the iPad. The biggest thing for me is the fact that this one is White and looks awesome.

But as far as speed of iOS, as a casual user I don't notice a big difference.

So for over $250 to upgrade for a White model, It may not be worth it to the average person.

Fuck You Project Magazine. They just raised prices to $2.99 an issue, up from $.99.

I'm still buying, articles and experience is great. But don't raise any higher, thanks.

Ugh.

So yesterday I browsed around iPhoto, and then when I tried to sync my iPad just to get a few apps and songs over, iTunes started optimizing my photos for transfer... like all 7000 somethings again (I sync all my photo library). I said what the fuck and cancelled that shit.

Then when I accessed my photo library on the iPad, it was full of blanks. So whatever, I left it syncing overnight.

Today it seems to have synced all the photos, but it gained a whooping 13GB of "OTHER" which is nothing more than garbage files from the previous borked sync. So my iPad got full to the fucking brim. It says it has 0bytes available. Shit.

Apple fix this shit!

If I restore it as new it will fix that but it will lose all the savedata... and some of that is really important. What do you guys recommend?

I had 5th of 'other' the other day, just before I updated to 4.3. I restored as new, then set up from a backup. I got all my saves, and recovered my 5 gb of other. I did lose a few things, such as my comixology comics (need to re download) and samples from the iBooks store (paid ones and synced ones were intact). I'm sure there's some other weird lost data that resides in other too. I've heard of music files and crap ending up there occasionally. I wish ere were a better way to purge it rather than to restore.

Aso, I decided to resync all my photos. I unsynced and deleted all images off my iPad, then I deleted the iPod photo cache inside my aperture library (there's one inside iphoto too). Then hooking back up to the library. For sure, it requires to reoptimize (yeah takes ages with thousands of images), but it cleared out more space - for whatever reason my photos were taking up 3.7 gb before I cleaned up and only 2.7th after. The odd thing is that the optimisation stage, the iPad thinks it will take 5.9, but reduces when it's finished. I think this may lead to an issue whereby it inks I don't have enough stuff when I sync other stuff, and it kicks off a bunch of images, even when I have 2-3 gb free.

I finally gave up on the apple store attempts. Here in so cal- I was told wen. to line up at 08:30 thur. for tickets and if that store had stock- they would go on sale at 09:00.

showed up this am at 08:30 to find out 20 people lined up at 06:00 and bought them all by 08:00. shenanigans (kinda).

promptly came home, gave in and ordered online. Wait now "4-5 weeks".

then found an article out of nyc that said all their apple stores are be being "swamped" by scalpers/resellers buying up to sell for twice the price in china!

i'm sure apple is loving all this.

I think the 99 cents was a limited time promotion. when I last checked a few weeks ago, the latest issue I could buy was 3 bucks. I think that's the standard price.

Myself, I'm eagerly awaiting a National Geographic subscription. I like their content - pictures look great on the screen - and I would like it even more if I could get it for less than five bucks an issue. :)

Which one did you get? Are you in the same AT&T 3G model shortage boat that I'm in? I'm at least prepared for shipment at this point but I won't actually have the thing until next week I'm sure. :\
I got the 32 gb wifi only iPad. I'm guessing it will ship next week and won't arrive until the following week.

I don't get why everyone was talking shit about the cameras on this thing. There not great but you can take pictures with them just fine.
This is not "fine."

It looks like a picture from my first Nokia. Terrible.

The cameras on the iPad 2 are for video calls. It would make no sense to raise iPad prices across the board & make the device thicker just so a few people could use it as a point and shoot. Next you'll want a bloody camera in your croissant and then complain that it's only 2MP.

Charlie Brooker said this about the 1st gen iPad, which had NO camera:

Some people are complaining because it doesn’t have a camera in it. Spoiled techno-babies, all of them. Just because something is technically possible, it doesn’t mean it has to be done. It’s technically possible to build an egg whisk that makes phonecalls, an MP3 player that dispenses capers or a car with a bread windscreen. Humankind will continue prosper in their absence. Not everything needs a 15-megapixel lens stuck on the back, like a little glass anus. Give these ingrates a camera and they’d whine that it didn’t have a second camera built into it. What are you taking photographs of anyway? Your camera collection?

Furthermore, the iPhone 4 is a device that actually makes sense t o have a decent camera, as it would actually be used pretty extensively as a point and shoot camera. Also the iPhone 4 is more expensive. Part of that cost will be the better camera.

I understand that it would be nice to have a decent cam in the iPad, but then, it would've been nice to have a decent cam in the dsi too. And a better cam in the iPhone 3G. And a better cam in my MacBook pro. And a better cam on my toaster.

Sounds like a narrow minded apple apologist. The ipad 2 has two cameras, and I'm sure with the amount of money they make per device, Apple probably could have gotten a better lenses in there WITHOUT raising prices, but that simply isn't the priority for this iteration, and really, enough has been said about it already. Like Nintendo, they will push hardware when its both cost effective for them and when they feel it is relevant to their target demographic.

Still, its always nice to want things. No real fan of any company's products want them to become
complacent. I think some are just complaining because they feel that coming from as big a company and market leader as apple, it sorta feels like a half-ass attempt in that department.

Oh, and don't knocked using the tablet as a video capture and picture taking device, especially when they are fitted with some decent editing software. Plus, AR stuff on a screen this big is always fun.

The device is not too thin for better sensors, it's just about the same thinness as an iPhone 4. iPod Touch may have been too thin for good cheap sensors, though.

Thanks. I'll do that on the weekend.

Fortunately, this happening on the iPad is not as much of a big deal as it'd be on the iPhone.

Sounds more like somebody just facing facts. Are you talking about using the iPhone 4 camera in the iPad? That sensor is about as thick as the device itself. It's not about lenses, it's about sensors. The better they are, the more they cost and the bigger they are.

Perhaps that new LG Tablet with DUAL 3D CAMERAS will be the real iPad killer?

Obviously there were tradeoffs made with the cameras, sure they are crummy, are they good enough for videocalls? Yep. Will they be better in the next iPad? Probably. Can you replace your P&S with an iPad? Stop being silly.

I just wanted it to be able to do proper document scannings. That's just about 3Mpx, same kind of sensor I had on my 2007 phone or my iPhone 3GS.

But it's no biggie since I'm probably skipping the iPad 2 altogether ;D

Not sure why people think cameras on a tablet is a big deal. For me its the interface, ease of use and apps. Though i do like using the iMovie app on the ipad 2 better than on the iphone 4.

OK Burger, that dude was funny as hell! So my apologies for the label, but my point stands. That quote, taken out of content, doesn't really help apple's cause.

Edit: I honestly don't remember the last time I brought my p&s with me. In fact, just this weekend, I used the HD video recording and picture taking features of the xoom to record my neice 's bday party. I then edited the whole thing on the same device, and then we watched it in HD on their TV.

You can do that right now with an ipad (and Apple made it a key point to demonstrate at the conference), folks are just a bit disappointed at the quality of the result.

Question though. I notice you tend to jump very quickly to explain the reasoning (at least what you feel is the reasoning) behind the things folk find unsatisfactory with apple's mobile products. You do it quite often in fact. Don't you find being a platform warrior a bit tiring? It does nothing to stop the whiners (since your answers aren't fixing anything), and makes you look like a bit of a shill in the process. Just an observation.

Look, people can moan and be as disappointed as they like. Hell, the camera in my 3GS sucks balls, and I rarely use it, the photos it produces are not great even for facebook.

What I try and do, and perhaps it doesn't come across, is understand why certain decisions and concessions were made. I assume there is a cheap sensor in the iPad 2 because:

A) It's suitable for videocalls.
B) It allows the $499 pricepoint to be maintained.
C) It's thin enough to fit into the device.

The Xoom has a better camera, but is thicker and more expensive. There's a saying I used to apply to internet broadband, which is "You can have it fast, reliable or cheap. Pick 2." The same sort of reasoning applies here.

Does everyone wish it had a 14MP SLR sensor? Maybe. Like you said, it's nice to want things.

They don't cover the entire edge, there is still a gap all around, but yes, it is better then most.

I tweeted them about it and they said it was done for engineering reasons.

Hey gaf I'm having a problem with airvideo. I just installed vmware and now air video won't work cause it's complaining that I have a double nat setup. How do I fix this?

I was actually going to go with the Otterbox Commuter after some research, but I'll check that out too.
I had the Yoobao case--I think it adds a lot of thickness to the device. I really liked the MacAlly Bookstand, but it got worn out after a couple of months.

Does VMware have options for how the network connection is shared? In Parallels there are two options, bridged and shared. If there are try switching to the other method.

Why are you running it in a VM btw?
