" For 5) buy a new computer"

So USB 3.0 is not enough? A new computer has anything better by this point of view? Not even the i3 Sony Vaio of my wife is not enough to power an iPad? Are you sure is a problem of the PC and laptops we're using? C'mon...
I've discussed this earlier in the thread: Standard power USB 2.0 ports only supply 500 mA at 5V. Your USB ports needs to supply at least 1000 mA at 5V for it to be able to charge when it's in use.

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4049?viewlocale=en_US

1000 mA over 5V is about 5 watts of juice. The wall plug supplies 10 watts and isn't shared with other devices consuming your USB bus power. The latest Macbook Pros can actually supply the full 10 watts over USB, if you have one.

The iPad isn't even configured to support the USB 3.0 spec, so I don't believe it would see any advantage of the 900 mA that 3.0 can provide.

Have you tried rebooting? It sounds more frustrating than it should be. I know I often have to sync twice to get videos to show up on the videos app (or iPod app on the iPhone)
I tried. The clips show up in the videos app, then in the Photos app when I synced them there, but they still don't show up in the iMovie import pane. The photos show up just fine, as does the quick clip I made with the iPad camera, but the imported clips don't. I give up. The clips work with iMovie on the Mac so I'll just used that.

You're sure it didn't come with only the USB power adapter? I'm trying to recall why I bought another 10w power adapter... maybe for the longer cable...

For anyone who uses an iCarbons skin: Are they easily removable? What kind of material do they use to stick it on to the back of the iPad? Lastly, do they work with a Smart Cover?

*shrug* I don't make the rules, take it to an Apple Store and complain. At least the iPads now come with a 10w wall adapter.

This iMovie situation is really pissing me off. Has anybody used it for a project before?

Ok. Anyway I downloaded iCab but I still cannot understand how to do this

1) If you are in a web page like this

http://blog.beastieboys.com/post/442...ss-video-thing

you cannot play the video and then click on the video and choose something like "share" to post that video directly on Facebook
Looks like the only way to share it is...go on youtube...search for that video...and then choose share. If you find the video...

2) You cannot choose the resolution of the youtube video you're gonna play

Ok thanks...but about point 1...I really can't get it. I read it also on the net that you can copy the link of the video in the page, share it or even play it with another app or youtube page but cannot understand how.

UPDATE: ok no...looks like our friend that told me you can, one page before this, was wrong. Looks like icab is useless for that and you need some JB application... :-(

iOS iMovie only supports the file format the iPhone and iPad shoot in. If you have clips in some other format, you should just use the Mac version.

And yes, day 1 launch of the iPad last year included the wall adapter. I'm 1000% positive. ;)

oh shucks, is it possible to convert the clip to this file format :/ I'll have to search for some jailbreak workarounds.

oops, I thought the page had a link to the youtube video but it's only an embed. Embeds are a pain in the ass but it's doable. You'll need some bookmarklets:

iTransmogrify
Facebook's Share Bookmarklet

Transmgorify will transform the embed into a link to the youtube page. If you're using Safari, that link will open the youtube app. If you're using iCab the link will open the mobile youtube page. In the mobile youtube page you can choose between the SD/HD versions (as mentioned above). You may then use the Facebook bookmarklet to share the link on Facebook.

Yes, they can be removed easily. I don't like picking at the edges, so what I do is grab some duct tape, tape a bit to the back and pull up the duct tape. It should grab the skin and it comes right off.

Material on the back...no idea. It's sticky, and doesn't leave much of a residue. Also has grooves for air so it easier peels up and down with ease.

Yes, works with the Smart Cover.

Thanks! I tried iTransmgorify and it works :-) now I'll see if there is a module of that and Facebook for iCab! Thanks
No more... :-(

In a blog post last week, Alexander announced that he received a phone call from Apple, asking him to remove the ability to download and install modules from the internet. Note that Andrew claims that Apple has merely asked him to remove the ability to download the modules from the internet, not the actual modules’ feature from the app.

As of v4.6 of the app, Andrew is now bundling all the modules with the app which could be previously downloaded from his server. Thus, while the app will continue to work with existing modules, users can no longer write their own modules and use them with the app.

I really can’t say that I like Apple’s decision, and technically it doesn’t make much sense. ”Modules” for iCab Mobile are simply a more comfortable variation of bookmarklets, and these are still allowed by Apple (and I assume Apple can not forbid that the user will save and use bookmarklets).

My understanding (at least with iPad 1) is that it won't charge through the PC while the screen is on, because the screen draws too much power. When the screen is off, it should be charging.

edit: Okay i'm replying to something from the end of the LAST page, whatever.

I tried Stanza, which is fine, but I switched over to Bookman. Both support .cbz/.cbr, both are free, both work reasonably well, but Bookman has an in-built FTP server, so getting comics on the device is very easy and uncomplicated.

Thank you so much for the Bookman heads up. It completely kicks ass being able to use the FTP within Directory Opus on my PC to drag and drop straight over without conversion or any other BS (Like using iTunes) go between method. Fucking awesome.

I just removed both ComicZeal and GoodReader which are now totally obsolete for me thanks to this brilliant and free app.

As mainly an Android user myself, it is stuff like this that makes me enjoy my new iPad ($399 for the 32GB iPad 1 from Verizon was too good to pass up) even more and I appreciate the heads up. :)

iOS apps have the ability to use iTunes to copy files to an apps "sandbox". Why doesn't he just use that? Have the website host the modules and provide instructions for putting them on the iDevice.

Just downloaded the Bing app, and I must say it's pretty good. Replaced the google search app in my dock. Was not expecting this.

If you like this, using FileBrowser is even better. You don't even have to have a computer running to transfer comics, just a usb drive attached to your AirPort Extreme router or a NAS file server.

FileBrowser is the best file management app around, literally gives me a wireless file system for iPad. Don't know why it's not more widely known.

With FileBrowser + ComicGlass, I just browse my comic collection wirelessly. FileBrowser will then hand off the comics to ComicGlass to open. It does that with a ton of other file types and apps too.

I prefer having the comics on board since I don't always have a solid wifi connection handy, although I do appreciate the idea. Thanks for the suggestion. :)

As a side note, I also discovered that someone made a functioning Subsonic app as well (iSub)...Not sure I want to drop $4.99 for something that I have for free on my Android phone already ,however, it is nice to see nonetheless.

Cool, but know that the comics are actually copied locally when opened/transferred, so it's really similar to FTP except no computer running is necessary.

Does anyone have a comprehensive list of news or magazine apps that have subscriptions in itunes? I have searched and found no such list, and searching through the top grossing apps to find ones that support in app subscriptions is tedious.

Got to use a Xoom (this time my friend's) again for a longer period of time (about 1 hour) and it seriously helped me appreciate what Apple has done with iPad 2 and iOS in general even more. Honeycomb's UI and UX is just a choppy and convoluted mess in comparison. I was able to improve performance by removing most widgets, but then I realized "what's the point?" Also, iPad's screen just looks nicer for some reason, I was expecting a killer display for something that costs $700+

Great job Apple! And please don't add widgets unless you can keep things running smooth.

It's none of the above - I fell for the same problem. (Last year, people were using Genius Bar as a workaround to do exactly what you're thinking.)

1. On the same page with those options, if you look in the bottom left area you should see a picture of an iPad 2 with text below it that says "Reserve now". You have to click on this.

2. This takes you to a screen where you select a store (pick whichever one you intend to buy it from)

3. From there, it goes to an inventory page of iPad2's available there. At least here in Vancouver, the inventory is live updated all the time to show what the remaining stock is, but not what's coming in tomorrow. At 9pm, however, they update the page with tomorrow's stock. It's essentially like buying tickets on ticketmaster, only the server isn't as slammed - visit at 9pm, refresh if it doesn't update.

4. After you select a model you need to make sure you're logged into your Apple ID, then you get to select a pick-up time, confirm, and you're done.

Having done this myself last night, I got my pick of models in the first 5 minutes, but when I checked an hour later, only one model was still available, so you have to be at the right page on time. Strangely enough, even with the reservation you may still have to wait in line at the Apple store, but it's a quick wait and they don't really care if you show up early. (Some of the models that go for sale the next day are failed reservations.)

The crappy thing about this whole process is that it's not explained very well - the reservation bit is hidden and I saw countless people walk into the store and try to ask if there was anything in stock, only to hear the same person have to refuse to answer and direct people to the website over and over again. They do have the inventory; they're just not allowed to sell without a reservation. (Half the people in line thought they were waiting to buy one without a reservation too!)

Thanks for the write-up, a friend of mine kept telling me 9am which made no sense.

Gave it a shot tonight, got one in my cart in two of the local stores (I'm in Van too) and by the time I got to select a time I was told they were sold out.

Hopefully getting some on Sunday too...

As I said before, the only widgets I'd want are weather and a clock. But I'd much rather just have a Weather app on the iPad and a clock app and both apps with live updating icons like the calendar has. Never made sense why only the Calendar updates but the clock and weather icons don't. From a HIG point of view, it's just weird to see information that doesn't reflect what it actually is. Plus it's not like it would use any processing power as the clock would only need to update once a minute and the weather once an hour at most.

Sounds like something I'd like as well, as long as it doesn't bog down performance.

Well, the thing is, I just lump sum copied hours of reading all in one batch...I am set to go for awhile now without PC contact. ;)

Problem now is where to start. heh.

Yeah, maybe all they had available was cancelled reservations. They seem to get stock pretty often though. Pacific Centre is typically jammed packed with smart cases and HDMI adapters so you can pretty much try to check out with an iPad as fast as you can and just ask for the extras when you go to pick up. Keep trying! :-)

They do seem very focused on setup this time. They sit everyone down and help them get their iPad activated, email setup, etc unless you want to head out right away.

Sounds like poor optimization of a rushed product to me.

Widgets can be done well and work fine if done properly. I can have 7 pages full of them on my Droid X without a hitch - I know it is a phone and not a tablet but it's only real difference in terms of specs is basically the screen size.. If the hardware is speaking with the OS nicely then there shouldn't be a problem and that is something Apple does well - Tuning their software with their hardware.

That said, I am not a huge fan of widgets to begin with although having a picture frame of my son and simple music playback diodes are awesome to have on my home screen amongst my apps. However one place Android has iOS beat is the near ever present taskbar shade for notifications and simple tasks. It sounds simple but it is IMO the biggest piece of functionality to have and on the iPad I am constantly trying to pull down that damn bar out of habit. hehe.

I've been going back and forth about getting either an iPhone 4 or iPad 2 and I've made my mind up about getting the iPad 2.

So, what are some good recommended cases? I could've sworn I saw one that was thin and opened like a book and the front flap folded to the back. Also, does it come with a screen protector already on?

If you are interested in a bumper-style flexible case, I highly recommend the Incipio NGP. Very thin and lightweight, with just enough of a lip around the bezel to protect the screen should the iPad fall face-down.

Combined with a Power Support Crystal screen protector, I no longer flinch when letting the kids jam on the iPad. :)

nice just got my shipped notice from apple. Ordered on launch in Netherlands at 5am. shipping now.

Man Flipboard is simply amazing. I was sampling The Daily for the past few days and was really impressed by that but after checking out Flipboard its clear that a daily newspaper thing like The Daily doesn't hold a candle to what Flipboard can do ... and its free! :)

If you are so inclined, comics can be found at any torrent website.

I would recommend reading fables, transmetropolitan, and the sandman to start.

Not sure what you mean by the last bit.... Graphic novels are just collections of comic books, the app will not be able to tell the difference btwn 12 comic issues and 1 graphic novel that contains the same 12 issues

Piracy advocacy of any sort is a big no no on neogaf

Any how,

Can good reader not allow browsing etc when an mp3 is playing? I must be missing something... Also what does the littlelock icon do when the mp3 window is up.

Has a sort of symmetry to it.

My dad is still undecided on a case, so what would you guys recommend? I like the look of the original Apple case, but some people say it's not that great?

Agreed. It's simple. Clean design. Relevant to your interests. Able to adapt.
It needs more love from people.

Finally my 32 gb white wifi ipad 2 should be here by Wednesday. I need suggestions on a case to buy. I really dont want the smart case because it doesnt protect the back. Any suggestions for cases for the white ipad????

I didn't even notice there are two iPad threads. I just posted in the other one by accident. But I have yet another question .. I saw someone posted a screenshot of their iPad where they had their apps are grouped into a single app icon by genre ie games, productivity, music, etc. How do you do that? I thought maybe "Pimp Your Screen" so I bought it but unfortunately I don't see it in here. (some organizational and wallpaper stuff in there though)

Damn hairline scratches already on my week old iPad 1. Funny thing is I think it was my cleaning rag that did it and not my 3 year old or wife. Still shocked considering it is a glass screen.

Oh well, can only notice them under bright light anyhow. Aren't viewable while using the iPad (Thank God).

I keep it simple with a traditional bumper-style case.

Incipio NGP for the back, Power Support Crystal film for the screen.

Smart Cover is a waste of $, imo.

I have one question that i need help please, the thing is next week i am going to miami to a business trip and i want to buy a Ipad 2, but i am worry that the store (bestbuy or walmart) won´t sell me one because i have read that you need to reserve one from the website before going to the store so that the store can sell you one, is this true, and i don´t plan to buy it from an apple store, thanks.
