Random thought: There was a rumor not too long ago about the new iPod Touches getting 3D screens. What if the iPad 3 launched in the fall with 3D?
iPad 3 3d this fall? Why would anyone believe that.

I don't see Apple going 3D anytime in the next 5 years, at least. I suspect they won't use 3D (like the 3DS) ever...

For reserve and pick up in store, am I guaranteed an ipad if i reserve?

I don't want to drive down to the mall downtown if I'm not.
As far as I know, yes. Just make sure you show up at the proper time, and find where the iPad line is.

god please no 3D. i tried the 3DS at target and got a headache. no thanks. the head tracking demo looks cool though.

Standing in line at the Miami Beach Apple Store, waiting for my boss to show up so he can buy me my iPad. I only wanted a WiFi model, but all they've got is Verizon 3G, which is kind of unfortunate, but I'm getting a bit tired of waiting, so I'll eat the extra cost. $130 for an iPad is still a pretty good deal.

I've got a messed up way to get an iPad 2, but I swear it's gonna work. The Japanese release date hasn't even been set due to the natural disaster business over here. So I ordered one from apple.com and had it sent to my mom's address. When she gets it, and the case that I got from Amazon.com, she's going to send them to me in Japan. I imagine by the time it actually gets here, the thing will be on sale in Japan, but still, I SHOULD have one coming by the end of the month.

If it's DOA, I'm extremely screwed.

Here's the problem with this: the 3DS achieves 3D by essentially halving the resolution per-eye (its screen sends every even-numbered vertical line to one eye, and every odd-numbered vertical line to the other). Doing this would put Retina Display-style pixel-doubling density out of reach. Worse yet: remember, the 3DS's screen is meant only to be viewed head-on (never at a rotated angle). A 3D iPad would need to do proper 3D in both portrait orientations and in both landscape orientations. So that's not just 2 times the pixels, it's 4 times the pixels. AND you'd lose its fantastic IPS viewing angles.

Basically, I can see an iPad with double the pixel density (which would be a prerequisite for 3D), but when it happens, Apple's going to be using that pixel density for just that, pixel density, and not for 3D.

This, on the other hand, while not creating any sense of depth since it's just an optical illusion, is far more achievable without sacrificing viewing angle or pixel density. I really want to see someone do a good job of combining head-tracking dynamic viewing angle stuff with an actual 3D display with good viewing angles; done right, it could be astonishing.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see an iPhone or an iPad capable of delivering 3D, at Retina Display pixel density for each eye, with 3D cameras, because the 3DS's augmented reality stuff is fucking cool. But we're years away from that.

Mike Abramsky with RBC Capital Markets sees Apple easily beating Wall Street forecasts for iPad 2 sales, with the second-generation device reaching between 2 million and 3 million units moved in the quarter. In all, he sees 7 million iPads being sold in the second quarter of fiscal 2011, a three-month span where the iPad 2 was on sale for less than a month.

holy hell.

Apple expected to report sales of 7M iPads, 17M iPhones for Q2 2011

My iPad 2 just arrived from China and the Smart Cover and HDMI Adapter too. Synchronizing takes ages from my iPad 1 backup.

great news. the more that gets sold, the more and better apps get developed for iOS. this beast is unstoppable.

what? you didn't hear? Android tablets are going to squeeze Apple out and turn it into a tiny niche. because open, open and cheap and open.

edit: finally got my ipad 2 today. holy shit, it's thin. I do wish the screen was higher res or, at least, laminated to the glass to reduce that distance between finger and content.

yea, i don't understand the talk about apple idevices becoming niche products. and apple fans are constantly called delusional. :\

Hey guys i'm looking for a nice case that has the wake sleep feature and is a nice non bulky fit that also adds protection. Any suggestion?

a revised estimate until apple has its earnings call.

well even if its lower like 5M, its like 5M sold for 3 months alone, i'm pretty sure other tablets would be lucky to have that number sold in its lifetime

Congrats, dude! What did you do with the original?

I'm kinda wishing I held on to mine to permanently mount in an iCade.

Yeah, the on-the-glass thing is so nice. Ah well, that's how Apple's gonna get me to upgrade to the iPad 3.

original became a birthday gift for my sister (turned 13). normally, I would've craiglisted the old one but, honestly, i could not think of a single decent thing to get her for her birthday so I gave her the ipad.

If she was obsessed with Beiber or Bratz or other tween crap, it would be a lot easier (and cheaper) for me to shop for her, lol.

How does the lineup work in the mornings for an Ipad 2 at an Apple Store? Specifically for the one in Broomfield, CO, but any experiences/info would be appreciated.

You're a good brother, hopefully she appreciates you.

Actually, this iPad is probably going to my Sister when iPad 3 launches (
next year
. She's 30 with 2 kids, so her teenybopper days are behind her ;) Facetime-ing with my then 3 year old nephew will be awesome.

Do they do lineups in the states? If it's anything like Canada you have to do an online reservation instead, but I'll let someone else speak to the US situation.

Nah, there is no online reservation system for the US.

yeah, she thinks I'm rad.

but I put myself in a pickle with this gift. see... I also have a 9 year old brother. His birthday is in the fall. there's no friggin way I can get away with some rinky dink gift for him this year. Legos ain't gonna cut it.

it's a good feeling when you see little kids using the iPad and figure it out really quickly. they'll be facetiming you like pros before you know it.

Looking at an ipad 2 at the moment but am scared of the ecosystem. How easy is getting alternatively sourced media able to run.
Video files, ebooks, audiobooks with saving bookmark/progress, comics.
For ebooks I mostly use my kindle anyway.

Im also going to be using it for our online store. We are having more and more locals turn up to buy stuff in person but we dont label the prices on our product. Walking back to the desktop to check the website is slow and annoying. I have also found that pictures and video demos when shown get us quite a lot of sales so I will probably need to stream or store video on the device.

You'd better hope that ridiculous iPad 3 in the fall rumor is true!

I sideload all of that through iTunes. No worries.

So I tried out the iPad 2 today, opened up a bunch of webpages in rapid succession. When a checked each tab the pages had to reload. Fail.

hmmm... that has definitely not been my experience, even on Safari.

and in icab, which is still my main browser, I had around 15 tabs open yesterday (Gaf webapp pages plus NYT and some gaming sites) and all of them stayed in memory.

Hey iGaf my sisters graduation is coming up and I wanted to get her an iPad. What are the essential accessories that I need to buy to go with it?
An iPad 2? I recommend the Smart Cover Apple makes, it's awesome.
