DisplayMate on tablet displays and retinas: http://www.displaymate.com/Tablet_ShootOut_1.htm

Rumors:
There are lots of entertaining rumors regarding the next generation of Tablets and Smartphones – most are made up nonsense based on phony tips. Here is our objective technical analysis of three popular rumors:

First Rumor: The next generation Tablets will have OLED Organic LED displays. Right now this can be ruled out based on cost and insufficient production volume, especially in the case of the iPad. OLEDs are improving rapidly, but currently they have lower peak brightness and lower power efficiency than LCDs – both of which are very important for Tablets because of their relatively large screens. So, unlikely for the next generation, but undoubtedly coming in the near future…

Second Rumor: The next generation iPad will quadruple the number of screen pixels with a resolution of 2048x1536. This would undoubtedly be a great marketing move but it’s technically an overkill and comes with a large penalty in cost and performance – requiring significantly more processing power, more memory and battery power, plus lowering the display brightness efficiency. Hopefully display pixels will not follow the same path as the camera Mega Pixel wars – because like them more pixels lowers performance after reaching a certain point. Apple had to double the resolution on the iPhone 3GS because its 480x320 resolution was very low. The iPad is starting with a much higher 1024x768 so Apps hard coded for the iPad 1 and 2 can be rescaled easily by the OS up to the new iPad 3 resolution.

Third Rumor: An iPad Retina Display – to make the iPad 3 a Retina Display does not require the same pixels per inch (ppi) as the iPhone 4 Retina Display because it is typically held much further away from the eye, whose visual sharpness is based on angular rather than linear resolution. The iPad is typically held 15-18 inches away as opposed to the iPhone 4’s 12-15 inches. As a result, to meet the 300 ppi Retina Display specification made by Steve Jobs at WWDC for the iPhone 4, an iPad Retina Display would need only 240 ppi. So an iPad Retina Display could start anywhere above 1862x1397 pixels. That is still a major overkill that carries a significant performance and cost penalty – so it would be primarily a marketing ploy. See below for our recommendation.

Recommendations:
Here are a few generic recommendations for the next generation(s) of Tablets: There are quite a few things that manufacturers (including Apple) can do to improve their Tablet displays to stay competitive in this extremely competitive category. For advanced and proprietary recommendations and optimizations, manufacturers should contact DisplayMate Technologies.

First Recommendation: Reduce the Screen Reflectance using an anti-reflection screen coating together with a surface haze layer to cut down on mirror reflections. It will then be necessary to eliminate the air gap between the LCD and cover glass by optically bonding them together.

Second Recommendation: Based on the above discussion for an iPad Retina Display, a good technical and marketing compromise for Tablet resolution is 200 ppi. A 1600x1200 9.7 inch iPad display works out to 206 ppi. For the 10.1 inch Android Tablets 1792x1120 works out to 209 ppi. Image sharpness can be considerably enhanced even further with sub-pixel anti-aliasing, but even without it the Tablet displays will appear very sharp at 200 ppi.

Third Recommendation: Carefully increase the display Color Gamut and image color saturation by managing the light spectrum of the Backlight and the Intensity Scale Gamma.

Fourth Recommendation: The Ambient Light Sensors and Automatic Brightness Controls on all Smartphones and Tablets are very poorly implemented. That wastes precious battery power and also causes eye strain. See our BrightnessGate article, which also proposes an improved display User Interface.

Alright GAF, I have an offer for the iPad 2 16GB 3G + Leather smart case for $620 shipped from one of the forums. He had a long history on those forums since 2003 with a positive +11 feedback in the Buy/Sell section.

Should I bite on it?

that seems like a good deal, but 16GB is just too small for me.

I don't use many apps. 75% of the time, the iPad will be used for browsing which is what I do the most. Other than that I use for small apps like RSS readers. Don't use for much media stuff either, so 16GB is good enough for me.

I was just curious about the deal. The warranty expires on May 26th, 2012 and it is still eligible for Apple Care.

Does anyone know how when would be the last date for me to get the Apple Care on it?

Thanks.

That article would have said the same thing had we heard rumors about the retina display before the iPhone 4. It's all true but it shouldn't dash anyone's hopes for a retina iPad.

A usable tablet from Apple, for $499? Unpossible!

May 25th 2012 :P

You have until your original warranty runs out to buy apple care.

The point was that 300+ ppi on a tablet isn't necessary to deem it "retina".

The iPad is currently the dominant tablet device across all geographies, contributing more than 89 percent of tablet traffic across all markets. The iPad's contribution to total non-computer device traffic is highest in Canada (33.5 percent). Brazil has the second highest non-computer device share of traffic coming from the iPad at 31.8 percent, although non-computer devices account for less than 1 percent of total traffic in the country. In Singapore, where non-computer devices comprise nearly 6 percent of total traffic, the iPad accounts for 26.2 percent of this traffic.stranglehold.

Damn Canada!!!

Canada represent!

Oh, and 97% of total tablet traffic from the US... insane. What was that about the iPad suffering because it didn't offer the full 'web-experience' due to lack of flash? How there was no way it would compete without flash support? Yeah, apparently people don't give a shit.

That was one point, yes.

Steve didn't define retina as 300+ PPI, anyway. There's nothing to discuss about the iPad's future resolution. We already know what it is and we already know it's coming. The only question is when.

No, we really don't know what the resolution will be.

this thread saddens me.

Ipad2 is actually a really good product and all anyone really cares about is higher resolution.

Hopefully iPad3 will have it so we can move on past it.

Thanks for the answers guys, seems like I'll aim towards the 32 GB model. I already have a 64 GB iPod Touch (3rd gen w/o retina) and a 16 GB iPhone 4, so it's safe to say that I won't listen to much music on the iPad when I get it. But I assume I can also stream music without any issues, not just videos, right?

Also, I have a minor follow-up question: how handicapped do you actually feel when you don't have a 3G-equipped model and you want to take the iPad out of your home? Are there many cool applications where 3G is essentially... essential?
I have the 16GB Wifi model. I'm not coming close to filling it up (at maybe 10GB right now?). I have a small selection of music I keep on it, a crapton of comics, and all the apps/games I see myself actually using on a day-to-day basis.

I don't go app crazy, because I'm not using the iPad as some all-in-one device, but for the things it does better. For reference, I have an HTPC for all the computer goodness on my home TV, two gaming rigs, a linux laptop, and a G2X for general mobile needs. There have been a few times where I've needed/wanted to use the iPad while not near a wifi connection, so I'll just throw on my mobile hotspot on the phone.

I could see needing 32GB if you're planning on using the iPad as an htpc/laptop/ebook/smartphone/comic reader, but 16GB is plenty enough for the person who has those purpose devices already.

Going back through the previous pages, saw some discussion on the smart cover and wanted to add my $0.02.

1. It has never fallen off, unless I've specifically tried to remove it.
2. I get the dust lines too, I keep a microfiber cloth in my purse (messenger bag, but who am I kidding?) to keep it clean.
3. Best part of the smart cover is tri-folding it and using that for a grip. Feels like sex.

What? Lemme see how does it go again..

You're doing it wrong.

The inside of the smart cover IS microfiber. When put into triangle mode pop off and use as a squeegee. They even said in it's announcement that it can be used to clean your screen. Keeps my shiny and perfect. Never understood this.. "my ipad has dust lines" thing. Just use it to wipe it off. Works perfectly.

Love my iPad . I just look at my iPhone 4 and know the resolution isn't much lower than the 2.5x larger screen the iPad 2 has.

Then again I cant wait till 4K tv hits the consumer market in a realistic way. I love them pixels.

This may be a strange question but do people how an idea how much data they download from the internet with their iPad/iPad2 on a monthly basis?

I am asking because the subscription I am considering has a 500 MB data limit per month after which you pay extra, and 500 MB sounds like very little to me.....

Don't plan on watching movies.Have a WiFi iPad but I average around 10GB a month on my iPhone 4. Unlimited Data will have to be taken form my cold dead hands ATT

Sooo I bit the bullet and bought a first gen iPad 1 refurb from Apple and hope to see it coming in next week. I would have went with the 2 but to me the price didn't justify upgrading and the extra processing speed wasn't unnecessary since I plan to use this thing mostly for school (PDF viewing, a few related apps and watching a few movies) and not gaming.

Which begs the question. Any suggestions on apps for a back-to-college student like myself?

10GB huh?

Yeah, thats a lot more than 500MB alright...oh well.

It really depends. I was on a data plan of I think 200 or 250 mb when I was abroad for 6 months, and I didn't go over. Just don't plan on watching streaming videos and you should be fine. I just browsed GAF and read articles/blogs.

I'm a crazy heavy user. 500MB is plenty if you wanna web browse, be careful with GAF and images though. Just don't plan on watching a lot or many videos.

Congrats! That's actually a color combination I really like. I don't like the white iPad that much, but with an orange smartcover, hmmm.

When one buys an Apple SmartCover, do you actually get a back cover as well, or is it only for the screen? The Apple website seems deliberately obtuse about this.

Other must be PlayBook, since it's only a real category in Canada where Blackberry is declining slower as a brand than in the US.

Canadians seem to love iPad though, but I suspect that the reason iPad makes up a higher percentage of non-computer internet traffic in Canada is because smartphones may be less common in Canada, making it easier for iPad to take a large percentage.

Part of that has to do with Android being a dead platform in Canada. People here just aren't interested in Android stuff, and Canada only gets a small selection of the US Android devices and they come months later than the US.

front cover only. they’re pretty clear about it

SmartCover only covers the screen and doesn't come with anything else.

I don't need a back cover, it feels pretty durable and should be fine if you don't abuse it.

Thanks. I'm honestly more afraid of scratching the backside of the (soon-to-be-mine) iPad since I assume it will be very noticeable, but not so much with the screen. A friend of mine has a very sweet front-and-back cover for his Xoom; is there something like that for the iPad?

Thanks for the info.

One of the most important things for me will be note taking and sketching. I am getting the Bamboo Stylus for iPad and likely Penultimate for sketching.

Does anybody have experience with apps that can convert the handwriting into text?

Another question: can Word documents be opened and edited on the iPad and then saved in a Word file format? What word processor do people use on their iPads?

Can you hook up the iPad directly to a printer and print your notes?

I really wish you could get Word, Excel and PowerPoint for iPad.

Handwriting to text isn't that great. Use pages for notes in class but if you need to write or draw a diagram open Bamboo up.

Pages can both open word Docs and export as word via iTunes, iCloud, Dropbox, and email. Documents to go is better for excel and powerpoint I have found than Keynote and numbers are.

Not directly, there are work arounds over wifi if you don't have an airprint compatible one. Otherwise email and print rom computer. I got an HP that is AirPrint compatible.

Word is Pages, Excel is Numbers and Powerpoint is Keynote. I only prefer docs to go for the latter because they have a note taking section on slides that keynote does not have. This is the iWork suit apple makes in place of Office.

So if I understand correctly, I can write in Pages or make slides in Keynote and then export them to Word and PowerPoint and vice versa?

If so, that is super cool.

Can you buy iWork as one (cheaper) App or do you have to buy each component separately?

I'm wondering what the policy is for replacing my new iPad 2. I picked it up last week and have noticed a bright spot right near the top of the screen vertically. Tonight I was watching a show with a white backdrop and also noticed a dead pixel almost dead center. I bought it at best buy but I read that I can take it to the apple store to get looked at. My concern is that it's a 16 gig wi-fi and they're never in stock so hav ing to wait for a replacement could take a while.

That's a valid concern, but taking straight into Apple is still your best option. I got my iPad 2 replaced immediately for some dust under the screen.

THey have replacement stock separate from retail stock. They will probably just replace it right there.

That's great news! I appreciate the help. I'll take it to get looked at tomorrow. I don't know if I could live without helping my Bitizens live life in their tiny tower.

Oh my god you guys, I think GoodReader just added tabbed viewing. This is big.
