Yeah, but I'd at least like the option to have a guest account on the iPad. I'd like to be able to hand off my iPad to someone knowing that they can't access my banking app, the app store/iTunes or access any other sensitive data.

iTunes and the App Store sales are behind passwords, so someone else needs to know that to buy stuff on your account. Don't know how it is with the banking app, but i suspect the same.

with the USAA banking app you need to enter your account info before accessing your account. Maybe some have the option to store passwords, though.

Not all banking\finance\debt apps.
Email as well, no way to 'lock' it.
Settings can also be messed with. Damn kids! :shakes fist:
 
separate user accounts has gotta be a pretty low priority for iOS now. I don't think it's a bad idea. I think it's a good idea for stuff like the iPad which is not as personal as your phone. i think it's a natural evolution and expansion of the platform but I don't mind that it's something that we may not see until several years from now.

till then, there are third party mail, browser and some banking apps that have privacy settings to get you mostly where you want to be.

Yeah, all of those things are behind passwords but I'd still like people to not even be able to access the apps. Along with things like my contact list, my safari browsing history, my notes, etc.

Edit: I forgot to mention I'd especially like this for my emails. I have plenty of personal and work emails that I don't want people looking at.

Okay so I just bought an iPad 2 yesterday. I really like it so far, odd lack of some basic apps aside (no clock, wtf?!).

Are there any essential academic apps you guys would recommend? Math, science, etc etc.

But... there's a clock on the screen all the time...

If you want a fullscreen clock there's a load of free apps that do that, mainly alarm clock/nightstand ones. 'Alarmed' is very good.

As for academic apps... not really looked... I'm sure someone else can help with that :)

Yeah I meant a full featured clock app like the one that is included with iPhones and iPod Touch. It was a simple, but great app. It boggles my mind why it wasn't included as a base app for iPad. I've looked at a few free apps, and i think I'll just pay for Clock Pro.

I just wish there was a way to hide my password and put the iPad into restrict or guest access. In a world where maybe it was $250, I would be okay with Apple's current methodology.

The password thing is inexcuseable, since I can be on a plane, whip it out and viola, someone has my password because I didn't have the pocket dimension app.

Just tried this and it is pretty impressive. I get a 5second delay but once it's rolling it's very smooth. Great for ~200mb avi episodes etc. Probably not HD.

Yeah I like this for non-streaming video watching. If going on holiday or away for a few days this app reliably plays all the usual file types, even HD mkvs.

I've seen kiosk style iPads at JFK where you can't get to settings and are limited to specific apps. I wonder how they do that--either enterprise specific allowances or they all jailbroken.

I wouldn't be surprised if those have some special software from Apple. Along those lines, I password protect some of my apps since my iPad is jailbroken, but I'd much rather just be able to log into my account as opposed to having to type my password in every time I want to check my email.
 
Got a question I'm hoping someone can answer.

I got my iPad 2 on launch day, and it suffers from light leak and it has a stuck pixel. I don't have an Apple store where I live but I'm going back through to the city that does have one in the next few days, so my question is:
A) I presume the light leak issue has been fixed. Just an issue with launch units, right?
B) Will they swap it over without any issues?

I'm from the UK if that makes any difference.

If you go to the tags page, you can click "gaming." I'll work on applying a sci-fi tag though, as there currently is none.

Argh, dropped my iPad in a sleeve yesterday and the top left corner of the bezel glass is shattered. Has anyone had experience with apple replacing iPads with broken glass for free? They replaced my iPhone earlier in the year, but it's a 2 hour drive to the Apple store and I don't know if they'll be so nice again.

Is there a case for the iPad 2 that is like the iPad 1 original cover with the garter strap ??

I've yet to see any good reason to get the transformer over the iPad, other than a cool name.

But recently some of the app discoveries I've made have quadrupled the iPad's value, this thing pays for itself with the value and quality of the apps

Except for the extra battery life, does the iPad keyboard dock work the same way as the Transformer's ?
 
I would say it is, kind of a no brainer either way. The reason I didn't buy an iPad 2 (despite having an iPad OG), is because i'm waiting for the retina display. After the iPhone 4, it's just hard to go back.

That's very nice and interesting.

I don't understand the popularity of the iPhone 4 (or even the iPhone 3GS and the Samsung Galaxy S). How can so many people buy a phone that is as expensive as a tablet or a netbook (unless you pay like 50 or so € a month for your phone contract, which is a lot to me)? Are people richer than I thought? I got my first smartphone (HTC Desire) in May for 99 € and I'm still amazed at what it can do for its price.

Anyway, this is off-topic and I'm actually interested in buying an Apple tablet.
 
Once I got my iPad I got kind of guilty for owning an iPhone.

But my iPhone has 3G, my iPad does not.
I carry my iPhone everywhere whereas my iPad I leave at home on most occasions.

I'm in web/multimedia/etc. so being connected at all times is necessary and helpful.

There ya go.

Subsidized plans in most countries. People couldn't afford the $600-$700 retail price, but they can afford the $99-$199 subsidized pricing.

No; The Transformer's dock also has a multitouch trackpad and Asus enhanced the Honeycomb OS to support that (the Asus dock also has more features that require separate accessories for the iPad). Besides, Apple now considers the iPad keyboard dock obsolete and is no longer selling them in stores.
 
If that picture isn't a huge argument for a Kindle as an e reader, I don't know what is.

I mostly read PDFs on my Kindle DX and it's most inconvenient. Pages load slowly and getting them to fit to the screen is a nightmare.

By E-reader he probably means ebooks, not PDFs.

The iPad glares like crazy, it's almost impossible to read it outdoors.
 
I have to know, does anyone REALLY read outdoors in the blaring sun. Do you just sit in the grass free of any trees as the sun pours down. I don't get it.. It's readable outside in some shade imo.

Also, once the iPad 3/HD is out, you'll have something so crisp to read on it'll be hard to use anything else.

I guess e-ink readers may work for some, but I can't imagine someone paying that much money to carey around a device wish such limited ability. Doesn't make much sense to me personally.

Yeah. I expect them do drop in price, that's the only way for them to survive in the market, just like netbook do at the mometnt.
 
E-readers cost 1/4 the price of an iPad and you can read outdoors. Believe it or not, but a lot of people used to read books outside in the sun! Those people are the ones who like E-readers because they can continue to read books outside on a nice day without suffering from terrible glare.

There is a reason that Kindle ads show people relaxing on a beach with a Kindle and a drink.

I don't know, seems so limited to the point where you might as well use a real book.. and from the e-readers i've seen they're not a mighty difference in price from a 16GB iPad.

Unless you're comparing the small screen versions, but the DX is the only thing comparable to an iPad imo due to the similar screen size. Can't really compare a 4-6" screen to a 9-10", can you?

You're completely missing the point. The Kindle DX is extremely rare odd product that nobody actually buys and doesn't have a market. It's going to disappear once the Amazon Tablet comes out, assuming they haven't already stopped making it.

The Kindle 3 sells millions of units because it's $129 and super ideal for reading books. It's by far a better book reading experience than an iPad if you're talking about just text. The screen is like paper, it's perfectly readable in sunlight, it's very light to hold and can be held for hours with 1 hand without making your arm sore, and it's roughly the size of a paperback book so it's big enough. It's battery life lasts 30 hours of reading, so you can easily take it on vacation and not worry about bringing a charger.
 
I read my iPad out on the deck all the time. Yes, its in the shade. No, i dont have any interest in reading in direct sunlight.

The kindle (I assume, since I've never actually seen one) is small enough to fit in a small handbag or purse. That's a big win.
