No one replied? Try a hard reboot. Hold the top button n the round button in the middle of the bottom screen area n hold both for a while til the iPad reboots...
Quoting you, but replying to the original guy. This happened to me. Try downloading something random from the App Store on the iPad itself, run it and close it. And then test your other apps.

So what's the general consensus on back shells to accompany smart covers? I have a BSE on the back currently but it's getting kinda gross.

I have a SwitchEasy CoverBuddy, and it's fantastic.

I was able to pick up an iPad 2 64GB Wifi from Best Buy for $599 because it was open boxed. It apparently has the same warranty as a sealed boxed iPad so this was a straight swap for my TouchPad but I get double the memory. Has anyone picked up the iPad BookBook case? How are those things?

Can the iPad 2 get screen burn-in? I like using it as an alarm clock, but I've been putting it into sleep mode because I didn't want to chance burn-in as a result of the same image being on the screen for hours at a time.

I'd like to be able to plug in my iPad overnight and leave the digital alarm clock app on so that I can see what the time is at night.

On a related note, is it harmful to the battery to leave the iPad 2 on charge every night?
Do yourself a favor and spend $10 on a cheap alarm clock, instead of risk damaging your $500 ipad.

mini rant. the spellchecking logic for ipad is basically incompatible with the way i type and write. it has an incredibly ilmited dictionary, so it's frequently autocorrecting perfectly valid words. The way it detects forms, even on apple's own sites, is comical. why in the name of god would anyone want to autocorrect an email address? and it knows it's an email form because it switches to accomodate the @ sign.

why not give me the option to manually accept a change that is being suggested, instead of the coutnerintuitive decline setup it has now?

but the biggest gripe of all for me is the fact that you can't keep spellcheck on, without keeping autocorrect on. which is beyond ridiculous.

end of rant.

I think my iPad is defective. It has a serious problem not being recognized by my Mac, I plug it into the USB drive and it will often say "not charging" and when I plug it in, it's not being recognized by iTunes

That's just iTunes being a piece of shit. It does that with both my iPad 2 and iPhone 4 every now and then. Plug it in again and it should work.

iPad 2 can't charge through most USB ports because it draws too much power.

If you press the X, instead of letting it autocorrect and then manually changing back, it should remember not to correct that in the future and also adds the word to its hidden list. You can also try adding your special words to the user dictionary, though I've never used it:

So, so true. I would have no problem typing on the iPad if it wasn't for this. If I switch to using the physical keyboard on my iMac to complete a task it's not because I want physical keys; it's because I want spellcheck without goddamn autocorrect.

Ok I bought one using some credit and gift cards I had. Which apps should I download?

iCab
AirVideo
AVPlayerHD
Writer
AppShopper
Nightstand Central HD

I'd also say Comic Zeal, but others are recommending ComicGlass these days.

Anything and everything. Games would also suffice.
Games--be sure to check out the iOS thread on the Gaming Side. I think Rage HD is still free, and that should be a great deal. Infinity Blade and Real Racing 2 are also the major games that take advantage of the graphics capability. World of Goo and Plants vs. Zombies take advantage of the touchscreen well, Labyrinth 2 HD takes advantage of the gyros/accelerometer, and all those board games take advantage of the screen well. Then there are games in all sorts of genres--adventure games: Puzzle Agent 1&2, Monkey Island 1&2, and the Back to the Future games. The latest rhythm game that people like a lot is Groove Coaster. And there are the short games that are great for picking up and playing for a short time--Cut the Rope, Fruit Ninja, Flick Kick Football, Tiny Wings, Bumpy Road, Flight Control, Solipskier, and more. A lot of people like playing sim games (not me), which there are all those Kairosoft games, Civilization Revolution, and Tiny Tower.

Major apps: Kindle, Skype, Twitter, Pandora, Yelp, name-your-favorite-site, name-your-favorite-newspaper, name-your-favorite-magazine, and its ilk.

Your bank probably has an app for online banking.

Goodreader seems to be the go-to reader that most people use for document reading.

Bamboo Paper is good for note taking by hand/stylus. Adobe Ideas can get you there too.

Browsers: iCab is a Firefox-like browser, and Skyfire plays flash videos.

Language/foreign: iPad usually has great language-learning apps, just search the language. I also find it has a ton of apps geared toward non-USA stuff (example: basically all major Chinese portals, video streaming sites, etc. have a well done app) if that is something you're interested in.

Professional: Whatever profession you're in, there usually are some apps geared to that. From helping farmers to helping doctors.

Cookbooks: How to Cook Everything is probably the best, but I've got a lot of apps from those celebrity chefs, and I think Food Network, Betty Crocker, AllRecipes, BigOven, and Epicurious are free recipe repositories. The paid apps usually have photos, videos, and more in-depth instructions.

Sports--probably some good apps for any sports you follow.

Random: I use 1Password for all my passwords. Make sure to download and setup the "Find My iPhone" app which will let you track where your iPad is (if it's connected to the net) on a computer or an iPhone. You might just want to download the apps for the major sites you visit, and see if you think the app is a better experience than the website, and delete the app if not.

Bad luck I guess? Been following this thread with it on constantly, no issues
My guess is you're not noticing it. The short-term retention I'm referring to here is very slight, and has been easily repeatable on all the iPad 2s I have tested in stores.

I just found out that the user dictionary only works and only appears if you use a Chinese or Japanese keyboard from the international keyboards setting. This is now firmly in my picardWTFisthisshit.gif folder.

Oh! I never knew that. I'm not sure if it does what I'm claiming, either. I just feel like that's what "user dictionary" should do. I know iOS 5 has a "keyboard shortcuts" thingy, where you can make it so that if you type "OWV" it'll automatically autocorrect into OuterWorldVoice.

It's annoying as hell on my iPad that even when I press the "x", it still always does the recommendation. I've gotten over it, but it's still very annoying.

That isn't right, it definitely should abort the autocorrect when you hit the little x

MDJCM said:

it aborts it once but it always tries to autocorrect it again in the future.

I’m fairly sure in earlier versions of the OS if you rejected the autocorrect 3 times, it would stop suggesting it.

edit: As soon as I write this, I can’t replicate the problem.

What's the best way to add images to an iPad from my PC without syncing to iTunes? Uploading to Dropbox is painfully slow. I just wanna plug in via usb and drag and drop some photos on there. I understand there is a Photo Transfer app, but I'm not paying for what should be a basic feature...

I don't know if it's new in iOS 5 betas, but I'm finding that words that are actually SPELLED CORRECTLY can still get autocorrected - I've seen "in" corrected to "I'm" because my finger hit the N key but was reeeeeally close to the M key. Fucking annoying.

Drag and drop into a folder, than choose to sync that folder. Anything you add to the folder will automatically sync going forward.

Yeah iOS 5 has been over-aggressive with the keyboard, I think it has gotten better--took the beta off my iPad for video issues though.

The keyboard on the iPhone would actually pick different letters from the ones you tried to push. It was particularly annoying because some letter combinations that are used in other languages aren't used in English. It's gotten better.

Um, figured I could ask in this topic; any other Swedes having trouble accessing the App Store part through iTunes? It just shows a blank page for me, and it's been like that for 2 hours or so.

(The reason I'm asking is since I need to go through that page to get student discount points, so can't purchase apps through the App Store on the iPad itself)

Not related to your question, but what is this student discount points thing?

I know credit cards from Chase and any Citi bank accounts can earn reward points from buying stuff on iTunes.

Just so everyone knows, if you get a wireless keyboard then you will never see the touch screen keyboard. I got my keyboard so that I could type long messages whenever I needed to but not all the time. I would use the onscreen one for short stuff but the wireless keyboard means it's all or nothing.

Called Apple and the lady was shocked. Seems like an obvious oversight so I'm sending the keyboard back due to this bug. Maybe they will fix it in the next iOS.

Since you have that Jamie Oliver app, I highly suggest How to Cook Everything.

It's not a discount, sorry, it's pretty much what you described. When I buy something off iTunes, I get reward points (1 SEK = 5 points). When I've racked up 10,000 points I get a gift card for 100 SEK. It's a pretty shitty deal, but whatever, if I buy shit from iTunes I might as well try to make each purchase count toward that goal.

Say what now? Once you turn the keyboard off, the onscreen should come back. Or do you mean use both at the same time?

Thing is, I've never synced this iPad before. I remember when I synced my previous iPad for the first time after having never synced it, iTunes proceeded to delete most of my apps from the device, because they weren't on the PC.

I tried selecting just the one photo folder to sync, but when I started, it was taking ages, saying 'backing up'... it looked like it was about to delete everything again. I had one photo in the folder to test it, so if it really was syncing that one folder it would have taken a couple of seconds. But it was doing hardcore shit for minutes. I didn't want to risk iTunes deleting all my apps again so I cancelled the sync.

Am I doing something really strange here? I mean... I'm against the whole concept of syncing. I treat the iPad as a separate device. I don't want all the shit on there to be on my PC as well...

I hardly ever recommend iPhone, iPad or iPods to people who don't understand, or don't like the concept of syncing. currently, they are not separate devices, they are extensions of your computer. Nothing wrong with not liking that, but I very much prefer it, considering I sync multiple times a day :p. I hate dealing with files, and prefer to deal with content.

So yes, if you are against syncing, it becomes a much more convoluted process.

The first sync after a long time of not syncing always takes AGRs, as it backs up ALL essential data, including settings, photos, app save data, etc - basically everything except songs, videos, and applications themselves.

i know you can sync and keep songs and videos managed manually, thus not deleting anything that you've removed on your computer, but not sure if that happens for apps.

You can't just plug in and sync a photo folder - it will sync everything by default, and as I said, not songs and videos IF you,ve selected them not to sync automatically.
