Apple iPhone 5S | OT |

Why would anyone with an iPhone 5 upgrade to this ? Can anyone give me a reason ?

There is no reason to leave an iPhone 5 to a 5S. Nothing spectacular other than the A7 processor, the Touch ID and the camera tweak.

Next years iPhone will see drastic changes as usual. This upgrade is only for those that haven't upgraded in awhile, new to the iPhone or is on the "S" cycle when it comes to upgrading every two years.

Interesting... did Apple make their own GPU?

No preorders mean one of two things.

1. The phone will be supply constrained as fuck.

2. Apple has caught wise to the shitload of iPhone sales fraud going around, and this is their way to curb it.

lol at the cases for the 5c and 5s. The case of the 5c is an aberration, I'm surprised Steve Jobs didn't rise from the dead to slap its designer and call him/her a bozo. With the 5s, the case makes it look like a 5c.... I give people who use a case for the 4/4s a pass since the front and back is made of glass, but with the 5 and 5s? That should be illegal.

With that particular case it is one big film that actually is attached to the case it self. OtterBoxes are pretty secure.

Uh, sorry, I didn't even read OtterBox. That's crazy overprotection but that's just me :p
It may well sabotage the fingerprint sensor.

$100 difference between 16GB and 32GB.........in 2013.........
That's the point of having a range like that. Te lower end phone they are making slightly less margin and the more capacity they are making slightly higher margin.

It's like the higher capacity phones somewhat subsidise the smaller ones.

They could easily make the lower one cost, say, $25 more and the mid range cost $25 less, but that's just how they arrange their tiers.

It also creates the illusion of choice and a different price range.

could be a custom variant with a custom image processor for the finger print and camera
Doesn't look like a custom variant. The wording makes it look like a new architecture/design.

Medium- and low-precision floating-point shader values are computed identically, as 16-bit floating point values. This is a change from the PowerVR SGX hardware, which used 10-bit fixed-point format for low-precision values. If your shaders use low-precision floating point variables and you also support the PowerVR SGX hardware, you must test your shaders on both GPUs.

The app would need to be able to associate the user account and password with the "Yes" information. I can't download a Citibank app, open the app, press my fingerprint and then access my account. It needs context to know what to do with that "Yes."

Sure, but you just use the Apple fingerprint scanner API to check for validity. You can do the rest of the handling in your app. None of that has to be on Apple's side if they leave it up to the developer to determine what to do with the fingerprint input. It's as simple as

Code:
if (appleScanFingerPrint())
{
   result = myCodeRunUserLogin();
   if (result = false)
   {
       myCodeSetupLogin();
   }
}
else
{
  printf ("Unrecognized user");
}

2. Apple has caught wise to the shitload of iPhone sales fraud going around, and this is their way to curb it.

Or 3. Apple wants to get better media hype about the lines regarding the launch of a phone since preorders don't exist.

In the UK and torn if i should go out and try to get an iPhone 5 cheap and go on GiffGaff, or go and get an iPhone 5 on contract this week. Or wait and get the 5S. My current phone dies after 5 minutes of use on full charge, I'd like to get an iPhone as soon as possible but not sure if waiting for the 5S will be worth the price ultimately if I can just rock a 5 for 12 months.

I don't think that is elegant. If you reset the systemwide fingerprint for someone else, for instance, it will still give a Yes for the user. The system is also set to say "Yes" to anyone that you want to allow to unlock the device, but not necessarily access your bank account.

I would imagine its already tied into parental controls, it seems to recognize more than 1 user already.

This would be killer on the ipad, if I unlock it I can buy apps and use the internet for porn, if my kids unlocks it he is restricted to kid apps.

I didn't say it was the best option; I said it depends on where they want to shift the work and responsibility. It could be as simple as a yes/no API. But hey if you want to make it more complicated, you could have it return an ID for the finger and you check against the ID to see if it's the one you want to be associated with. But remember, Apple doesn't support the notion of multiple users on a device, so they could just assume any valid finger would be that of the user.

Steve okayed Flower Power. No one is infallible.

I honestly do think so, yes.

Why? Because they used a preposition? News flash: There's no real reason that ending a phrase with a preposition is bad. Your middle school teacher is misinformed.

I think we already see where they want to go with iCloud Keychain. It seems like Apple would prefer to keep security stuff in their own system.

So, I'm rather relieved. Wasn't sure if I wanted to upgrade to the 5s before. But since they raised the price again, didn't increase storage and don't have a real black color anymore I'll stick with my 5 till next year. Only thing I'll miss is Touch ID and LTE. iPhone 6 should be a sweet upgrade.

May get the new Dock though.

I think I'd rather have Apple handle it too to be honest. At least I'd have more faith that it's a unified system rather than everyone doing their own thing and having to rely on every developer to do the right thing. That said, I'm not sure if I want it to be in the cloud instead of local. Just like the fingerprint data.

I'm impressed with how the 5C ends up feeling in the hand. The hard coated surface manages to not feel slippery but still have a certain heft and solidness to it. What's interesting about the 5C is really the way its rounded corners all seem to have the same radius, which gives it a very unified feeling in the hand. The front, edge, and sides all share that same rounded profile. It still retains the same overall profile as the iPhone 5 as well. Buttons on the 5C are clicky and responsive, and also have that same hard coated feeling without feeling cheap. That's really the important thing about the 5C, it had to be solid while still being made out of polymer, something OEMs in the Android space still haven't quite nailed down.

Huh? No. Because I think there is a line between ad copy that effectively promotes the product and copy that is completely over the top and full of itself.

I think there are more bits that cross that line in this latest batch for the phones. 5C writing, particularly.

From a 4S owner, still not tempted to upgrade. Tech boost = meh. Fingerprint sensor is neat though.

iOS7 has me way more excited. The stuff you can do from the lock screen is fantastic and was desperately needed years ago.

I need more storage space. My 16GB iPhone 5 is much too small.

So I can either get another iPhone 5 (or 5C) with more storage, or fork over a bit more cash and upgrade altogether.

From one 4S owner to another.. You be crazy.. Tech boost over 4S is drastic. 4S "feels" fine now on iOS6, but 7 performance is noticeable (though not horrible) and within 4-6 months you're going to be sick of getting pared down graphics in the game releases. Not saying you won't survive til iPhone 6... But no way in hell 4S owners like us are going to feel short changed by the 5S.

I went from a 4S to a 5. The screen, LTE, and faster speed alone was worth the jump.

It will definitely be an even bigger jump if you wait for the iPhone 6 though.

In that case yes. They are two different types of networks; AT&T is a GSM network(as is T-Mobile), Verizon is CDMA(with Sprint).
But I think that CDMA iPhones are GSM compatible.

Except the 4, which had a CDMA-exclusive version.

How are people going from a 4S or 5 dealing with their contracts? I'm 8 months away from the end of my 3yr contract (Rogers) and when I nabbed an iPhone 4. I desperately want in for this phone now and not all the way out in next Spring. What to do. ;(

I'm curious as well I just got a new phone with a contract like 4 months ago what can I do?
