Apple iPhone 5S | OT |

I have an iPhone since the 3G.
This year's Keynote is the first time I don't identify myself to Apple's brand, it's not something for geeks or nerds anymore it's just a bling bling piece of tech for people who just want to show-off and play Candy Crush Saga...

I'm disappointed... Let's hope the 6 will be more interesting... And bring a new design...

I'm also curious how well the fingerprint reader works, this should be a standard in all phones seeing how people store, access more and more sensible data in them, make epayments etc...

Dude, probably since the 3G, that's exactly what the iPhone has always been.

I've had the phone since the first Iphone, where I paid $500 US for it. Thing is the year my contract ends is the year that Apple does not do a major design revision on the Iphone. Really a sad deal for Iphone early adopters.

If there's one company who knows how to milk i n c r e m e n t a l upgrade year after year that'd be Apple. Disappointed with this but then again my contract won't end til next year and by then iPhone 6 would hopefully have come out.

When was the iPhone, or Apple in general, for geeks or nerds? It's always been for artistic hipsters or soccer moms.

Android is the domain of geeks. iPhone is where they play some populist music that your dad likes while they tell you how touchy feely you should feel.

The tone of their message is rote at this point... They've been doing it for so long. No idea why you sense a change now.

The iPhone is what you make of it. It can be for geeks and nerds, and it can be for the mainstream. It's adaptable like that, due to its app backbone. Just because something looks good doesn't mean it isn't powerful too.

I think the whole fad when owning a smartphone was for geeks/nerds/cool people is pretty much over. Hell, it ended like 4 years ago. It's just an everyday thing now. Though just because your casual everyday person appreciates it doesn't mean you can't either.

This is what iPhone users think of the iPhone.

The hate everywhere is fucking ridiculous.

OMG no innovation!! Android is so much better!! Apple is dead!!!

What do you actually want on the phone? Dead serious question.

A bigger screen? Ok
High resolution? Ok

What else? What amazing feature does Android have that Apple doesn't? I'm seriously curious to have the hate explained. Why would I go with Android over iPhone?

Widgets? Better camera?

*edit* I thought of some more

Better notifications (reply to etc), change default apps and NFC. Better customisation, can load any app you want with less strict app ecosystem.

I'm an iPhone user, but considering switching when I see what the Nexus 5 has in store.

I'm an iPhone user, have been since I started using smartphones with little desire to change ecosystems anytime soon.

That said, I'd really like them to incorporate NFC at some point, hopefully with the 6. NFC is pretty useful for transit cards/credit cards etc.

Widgets, better multitasking, being able to set default apps, customization in general, lots of things really. Just like there are reasons to go with iPhone over Android. Or Windows Phone over either of them.

Not trying to start a troll war between fanboys, just wanted to give my impressions of this Keynote and Apple generally with the release of the 5S. There's no hate or anything, just disappointment that's all :)

I don't even think you're wrong. Apple is terribly cheesy and populist. I just think it's been like this for a long time. It feels identical to the press conference for my phone, the 4S, two years ago.

I think I'm gonna switch to black and space gray after being all white iOS devices for awhile. It just looks too good.

The the tin-foil-hay-guy in me really isn't digging the fingerprint idea. Well, it's cool in theory, but dat NSA, man.

I sometimes wonder if the people that think there is no innovation in Apple's new releases are the same people that are content with, say, Samsungs new releases. Sure, NFC is lacking in iPhones, but other than that the smartphone industry as a whole isn't very innovative. Usually we see spec bumps in new releases, and that's it.

On the software-side on the other hand, Android seems to have been faster to address issues than Apple.

Widgets, better multitasking, being able to set default apps, customization in general, lots of things really. Just like there are reasons to go with iPhone over Android. Or Windows Phone over either of them.
This relates to software, not really the 5S as such. Better multitasking seems to have been addressed with iOS7 and setting default apps really isn't useful for a system that doesn't have a real filesystem (this being a cause for real concern). Lack of customization (and widgets) is unfortunate.

Thanks for the replies.

I agree with the OS being more open and customisable but for me, none of those features are really tempting. The best thing android phones have going for them are the big screens in my opinion.

I agree with JNT in that there's very little innovation anywhere. Spec bumps are all we get 99% of the time. Sometimes we get a random thing like touchless controls in the Moto X and a fingerprint scanner in the 5S but other than that, there's no innovation.

The hate is completely unnecessary in pretty much every way. I used to think the console wars were bad but the phone wars are in another league. So much bullshit everywhere....

According to Apple.

According to the US there was no government organization spying on internet users a few months ago either.

They specified where on the phone the fingerprint data is stored, it would be very easy to find it.

Keep rocking that tinfoil hat.

I share your skepticism ;) But I feel like if they make that claim publically, there are tech gurus who can go through the device and verify it. Once that scanner has access to apps and internet - who knows - but if it really doesn't, then I believe them that the NSA probably has no access to it.

I don't feel like tinfoil hat is a reasonable reference, in light of recent revelations.

The NSA most likely knows what porn you like. That is a probable fact.

So y'know... vigilance about privacy and security is a good thing in this day and age. I don't blame the skeptics... and I only feel good about the iPhone 5S fingerprint scanner because they have promised me (in a way that can be challenged) it can't have app/net connectivity.

VanMardigan

has calmed down a bit.

The response is nowhere near as good as the original article. It basically amounts to "I don't like or trust Google". Like something a fanboy who doesn't want to even try the alternative would say.

I don't use either ios or android, so I have no dog in this fight. I think the best phone for every person is different. There is no perfect phone with every feature and the best everything. I'm glad Apple is making flagship phones that aren't huge. I'm glad Google is making affordable nexus devices that you can customize infinitely. I'm glad Nokia is desperate enough to create a 41mp smartphone that allows me to take beautiful pictures of my kids and life with the only device I carry around everywhere.

Gotta agree.

The article is pretty terrible. He could have easily talked about how iOS trumps Android but instead he tells us that Google is evil.

The apps on the iPhone are the biggest thing holding me from Android. That and the fact that iCloud backups are mad easy when buying new devices and the OS is always speed and lag free.

Well, i feel that you need to be vigilant where it's appropriate. There are more pressing areas in the tech world, even within Apple when it comes to user data.

Why is Touch ID being underwritten as a gimmick? If this feature debuted on the S4 you bet we'd be hearing about how awesome it is.

The answer is rather vague, instead of offering what iOS can do better he pretty much says 'I don't trust Google'.

Gotta agree.

This, although I disagree about the App situation.

Would have broke my contract if it had a larger screen and paid full retail for it. Seriously, every single person I have talked to that ditched iPhone for another did it SOLELY for the screen size. Does Apple realize how much market share it could have retained if it simply listened to the demand of a larger screen? No one I know bought an S3/S4/Note II based on the gimmicks Samsung advertises. It was 110% the larger screen.

Anyone else disappointed that Apple didn't go all the way with the gold iPhone 5S? I would have preferred if they went with yellow/gold painted glass front as opposed to white. I'd buy that (if I still wasn't under contract with my 5).

yuck. The gold iPhone 5s looks pretentious and tacky enough as it is.

Are you new to this conversation?

We're talking about the retail price.

And the fact that for everything else, prices have gone down over time even as power has improved.

A $500 TV today blows away a $5,000 TV from 10 years ago.
A $500 laptop today blows away a $1,500 laptop from 5 years ago

Yes, the $700 phone today blows away the $700 phone from 5 years ago....but why is it still $700?

Their custom-from-the-ground-up manufacturing infrastructure was truly revolutionary... a massive investment gamble that requires premium prices to truly pay-off.

More importantly...they just can in the current subscription service model. Best thing people can do to drop prices is to not buy the thing.

The prices in australia are fucking ridiculous.

$1129 for a 64 gb iphone. A 64 gb ipad retina cellular is $230 cheaper.

Does it really cost that much to enable voice in a mobile chipset.

It will want to come with vouchers for free women at that price.

No, he's right. with the volume of units phone manufacturers move and the kind of marketshare numbers we see the idea that 'geeks' are only in one platform has always been ridiculous and something that fanboys tell themselves.

Christ, how the fuck are you still using a 3GS? I mean I understand being behind the curve (I'm on a 4), but the 3GS? I'm surprised that thing isn't just chugging and crashing constantly. That's what my 3G did near the end, and my 4 is pretty much doing that, too.
I'm on a 3Gs a well. On the latest iOS version. And 16GB of space. It still does the job, but it is starting to show cracks now. I'll probably be upgrading to the 5s.
