i figured thats what the brain picture meant, but it was just so stupid. this same thing can be said for so many different apps. y do you need a to do list? use your brain! why include a calculator in the iphone? use your brain moran! nothing wrong with a simple tip app.

Now Playing is a great program that does Movie Times, DVD/Blu Ray Releases, and Netflix all in one and stuff is integrated together where you can look at like upcoming Blu Ray releases and add them to your queue or look up a movie you just saw in the theater and rate it on Netflix. Highly recommended and free.

As for your tipping calculator, if I get some spare time I could probably program that pretty fast.

In case you missed it since you bumped it to the next page.

oh thanks, i actually did miss it. i was thinking of buying iphlix, but ill try that out.

i think you could make some money off a nice tip program. i dont think i expressed the specific thing current programs are missing correctly. i had an issue with it when i was using it before, but now i forgot.

It has been mentioned once but Remote is fucking excellent. Control your PC/Mac iTunes remotely with your iPhone/iPod Touch. Free app, too.

i just got netflix and want an app for it. what is the best one? i dont care about price, as long as its the best.
I've gone through 3 Netflix apps and iRentMovie is the best one. It has the best search capabilities (i.e. you can search by All, Blu-ray, DVD, and Instant Watch). Instant Watch search only is a must if you stream movies and most apps lack that capability.

wait, i cant watch the movies straight on my iphone can i? ill have to look into this one..

For me:

- Shazam (recognise any song and lets you buy it)
- 9 Toolbox (super useful digi-gadget compilation)
- Trixel (awesome puzzle game I made)
- Backgrounds (free dloadable background)
- The Art of War (a book - very well realised)
- Classics (a selection of books, complete with page flipping goodness)
- Drinking Games (some great ideas for drinking games)
- iChing (digital iChing)
- I Can Has Cheezburger (lolcats)
- iFitness (AWESOME personal fitness app)
- Inside Xbox 360 (a gamertag viewer)
- Metasquares (genius 'thinker' puzzle game)
- Sudoku (duh)
- Rowmote (use iPhone as a remote for my laptop - useful for TV link movie viewing)

Is there a legit app like 'Wallpaper' on Cydia, that lets you view/use other iphone users wallpapers? Always thought that was a cool idea.

some of these might have been mentioned but I'm gonna list my favorite, non-game apps. ok, here goes

WeatherEye - best weather app out there. love the UI, has radar maps and multiple city support.

Now Playing - best movie showtimes and upcoming DVD viewing app out there.

netnewswire - My RSS feed reader of choice. syncs with newsgator services (2.0 will sync with google reader :o)

Twitterific 2.0 - the 2.0 release bumped tweetie off of my home page. the King is back.

MovieStar - IMdb lookup app. comes in handy sometimes when you can't quite remember the name of that guy who was in that thing.

NYTimes - much improved over previous versions. quick access to the editorial and photo sections. nice formatting

WikiTap - my Wikipedia reader of choice. seems the fastest to my eyes and has pretty acceptable rendering and quick links to chapters within an article.

Library - Delicious library is on the iphone and is a geeky, frivolous app for those who use the mac app to catalog their items. i hope future versions will allow for actual functionality like scanning in new items or assigning loaned items on the spot.

Jaadu VNC. there are several VNC apps on the iphone but i had the most success with this one. Jaadu offers a free utility for the mac or PC that allows you configuration free, encrypted access to your computer via 3G. that's what makes it for me

Star Walk. beautiful astronomy app for stargazing.

Bargain Bin. I tried App Sniper but it was super crashy. this one is free but is not as fully featured. but, it's more stable and gets the job done when you want to check upon app sales.

Bloom. funky ambient noise generator from Brian Eno. kinda cool, kinda mellow. I like it.

Comic Touch. a ton of fun. just great with friends. stretch pinch and add comic captions to the pics you take with the camera. one of the first apps i bought last year. slick UI.

Facebook: Social network
Translator: Translator
AIM: Instant messanger
Dial Zero: Quickest way to get ahold of a live rep
Dictionary: Dictionary
textPlus: Free texting
Flixster: Movie listings
TWSS: That's What She Said. You press a big red button and a guy or girl says TWSS. I've used it in the best occasions and it always gets laughs. :lol
Fluid: Screen becomes a surface water. Nice ambient music and you can add whatever background you want but nothing much else to it.

Ok, I got sick of Palringo - it stopped showing contacts for my msn. So I went and bought BeeJive. It is indeed awesome, and worth the 10 bucks. Ok, so it doesn't really do anything more than Palringo, so if you're not into IM, then maybe it's not for you, but I really appreciate solid, well-designed apps that don't go too far, and BeeJive is one of those.

AirMe for photo uploads. Seems to work decently for Picasa uploads to a private album, which is what I was looking for.

Anyone else have luck with other apps supporting Picasa?

Bump for more recommendations. :)

sure, why not. these are a few that I use less often but are still interesting

uHear: hearing test app. check your hearing with various frequency tones and a background noise test. free.

1Password: syncs with the Mac app and you an use it to keep not only web site passwords and login info but also your wallet info for credit cards, airmile numbers, etc. free

Xbox Achievement Guide: review achievements for 360 games. nice little app if you're on an achievement run and you're not near your computer. free

Zenbe Lists: simple list making app that syncs with a web based service. free

A few of my favorite apps:

- Facebook (free)
- iReddit: Great reddit app that lets you log in and up/downmod stories, post comments, etc ($1.99 I think)
- Pandora: Internet radio/music recommendation engine (free, though I would pay five bucks for it without hesitation)
- Tweetie: Simple/clean twitter app, better than twitterfon and less clunky than tweetdeck imo ($2.99)
- WunderRadio: Listen to radio streams, I use it for the local sports channel 1310 THE TICKET ($4.99 I think?)
- Wikipanion: Simple/clean wikipedia reader. Pro version lets you queue up stuff locally for offline/faster reading. (free/$1.99 I think)
- Ping: I use it to ping stuff at work, usually after bringing up new servers somewhere ($0.99)
- WinAdmin: Remote desktop app that's a little hard to navigate sometimes, but worth the trouble in a pinch ($9.99 I think)
- Shazam: I almost never use it, but for that occasional time when the wife wants to know who sings the song she likes on the radio, it's a must-have (free)

And while we're at it a few iPhone friendly websites:

- http://www.secondapps.com/neogaf - Absolutely AMAZING NeoGAF reader that keeps getting better.
- http://www.google.com/reader/i/ - Google RSS feed reader. I could be stuck in an airport for six hours and not run out of stuff to read with this. Set up your feeds on the computer, read 'em on the phone. So great.
- http://iphone.fmylife.com - More great timekill. Read about other people's struggles to feel good about yourself. :D
- http://m.break.com - Watch Break.com videos
- http://www.urbandictionary.com/iphone - Check out the slang word of the day or hit random to wander through the site aimlessly.
- http://mobile.salon.com - The liberal media in handheld form
- http://m.espn.go.com - ESPN perfectly formatted for iPhone consumption

All of the above have icons attached to them, so you can add them to your home screen and have it look perty. Gotta love it!

My Iphone 3GS will be arriving shortly and one of the first things I will do it buy some apps. I'm not sure if we are supposed to talk about games in here but are there any good deals like the peggle one that happened recently?

Google Reader is indispensable.

I've also been using Amazon Kindle heavily recently because Amazon is sly and put up a few books for free that I was interested in reading. It's a bare bones reader app compared to the likes of Stanza, but it gets the job done, and ultimately Amazon's access to more mainstream published works for distribution via Kindle is more important, IMO, than extensive features. It holds my place in whatever I've started reading and I don't really require much more of an e-reader than that.

Tweetdeck seems like a good app too. I'm not much of a Twitter user personally, but I can't deny the usefulness of mining tweets for info and this seems to offer a good interface for keeping track of multiple searches.

Here's what I use:

WeatherBug Elite - WeatherBug was my favorite app, and when they updated it I was glad to pay a dollar to remove the ads. So awesome.

Tweetie - My Twitter client of choice. Very clean and simple, but also robust.

Google - Voice. Search.

ESPN ScoreCenter - Maybe not the best score app, but certainly the prettiest and it also has direct links to game recaps on the ESPN Mobile site.

12seconds - The coolest social network that you aren't on. It's like Twitter for videos. You get 12 seconds (like Twitter gives you 140 characters). The current version allows you to take 3 photos, record some audio, and make a little slide-show to upload to the site. The new version (soon to be released) supports video on 3GS.

Facebook - Duh.

Mint.com - Handy iPhone access to pretty much all my financial information on Mint.com.

Amazon - For browsing Amazon and tracking my orders on the go.

ConvertBot - The slickest unit conversion app. The free version will convert most anything you need on a regular day. The paid version (99 cents) will convert almost anything that exists.

Now Playing - Mentioned before. The best app for movies. Excellent info on currently playing movies, and a great Netflix interface. And it's free.

Pandora - Internet radio.

Save Benjis - Lets you look up products to compare prices across stores and websites. Does anybody have a better app for this?

Shazam - Music identification. Everybody needs this.

Zenbe - For lists, mostly shopping lists in my case.

now granted I did just post this in the official Iphone thread- but I want my voice to be heard dammit! I need to vent-

So here I am like a fool, excited about the MLB app upgrade to streaming video- that is until I try it and realize I am still subject to the blackout.

So I can pretty much stream video of every game, except the ones I actually give a shit about!!!

FUCKING BULLSHIT!@!

I am an angry man right now

FYI - iloveradio is a pretty decent app. It basically gives you access to ClearChannel stations. You, for some reason, can not listen to streaming baseball games, but you can listen to streaming NFL games.

Does anybody know if the Sirius/XM app REQUIRES a 3G connection, or if it can connect over EDGE? I can't seem to find a concrete answer anywhere.

m.nbc.com - streaming video site for NBC that works perfectly with the iphone/ipod.

Thanks so much for reminding me about this! Awesome. And they have a nice icon to add to my home screen.

It's not really an app, but a iPhone formated UI. DropBox, the awesome service that syncs any files copied or dropped into the Drop folder on your pc/mac to your account, has a very awesome iPhone formated site. It's so awesome to have access to all of my pictures and documents from my iPhone on a clean and simple UI. They give you 2GBs for free. I find it pretty useful.

As for true apps I'm using

UpNext: NYC in 3D, tap a building to see what's inside, pretty awesome

reddit: read reddit (I use the free one but I think I'm going to buy the official one because it's too plain)

Shovel: read Digg

Gdgt Junkie: news feeds from Gizmodo and Engadget in a nice presentation

myhomework: really nice homework app with categories and a bunch of other bells and whistles

websearch: brings up results from search engines and sites on one page

slydial: call someone in your contacts and get connected to their voicemail for when you don't want to talk

snaptell: take a picture of an item, get prices

AppVee: latest app news, reviews and videos

tv.com: watch shows and clips

Not sure if you're aware but Digg has a (very nice) iPhone optimized version of the site at http://m.digg.com/ - it allows you to login and digg stories, view comments, etc.. I assume that would launch faster and use less CPU/battery than a dedicated app.

Yeah, I actually use that more so than Shovel, I just like having it and using it sometimes because it looks nice and formats well. I don't participate in Digg, I only browse, so it's just another option I keep around. Thanks though.

Just bought Star Defense, game is actually pretty nifty and they seem like they are going to be putting out more content (at cost) later.

3D Tower Defense game. Love the navigation of the map via multi-touch.

Bumpity.

I'm not surprised it's not listed given the pretty limited audience for the app, but if you live in San Francisco, or visit a whole lot and ride MUNI, iCommuteSF is pretty indispensable. It integrates the bus/light rail GPS-based arrival time estimates from NEXTBus.com and uses the phone's location data to pinpoint stops near you, stops near you for specific lines, lets you save your favorite stops, etc.

Also, Fandango. But I'm the kind of person who will decide, pretty much out of nowhere, to decide to go see a movie.

I can't believe I'm doing this, but I'm this thread to pimp Bejeweled 2. It's my new time-waster of choice. Really fun little game and using your finger to slide the jewels is the most intuitive way to play.

My brain is on overload over these past few days as I try to process all of the amazing functionality that's just fallen into my lap. Thanks so much to everyone contributing in this thread. You've boosted my enjoyment and cut down the gold to junk ratio tenfold for me.

I'm like the OP.

4 pages.

- Apple stuff
- Web Stuff
- Games
- Tools

I just got the new Delicious Library App. Awesome if you have the Mac program, otherwise it's useless.

Other good ones I like -

- ISP Usgae: Self explanatory
- Wikipanion: Best Wikipedia app imo
- iDaft: Awesome waste of time app for lover of Daft Punk
- Mover: Allows the sending of photos and contacts between iPhones over Wifi.

free app that simply duplicates the shelves you have on the mac app. pretty UI (of course) and you can email item details to people.

I don't know how people do this.

Page 1: Default screen
Page 2:Web stuff
Page 3:Tools
Page 4:Shopping (Ebay, Amazon, Snaptell, Fandango, etc and 2 blank rows)
Page 5: "Hardcore" games
Page 6: More "hardcore" games
Page 7: Music and shooter games
Page 8:"Casual" games
Page 9:More casual games and lite versions

Some pages have one or two blank rows (page 3 has 2 blank rows, page 4 has 1 blank row) for future additions so apps can always stay before games and hardcore games can stay before casual games in the future.

The home button to get you back to page 1 is used a lot on my iPhone :D

Now Playing is one of my favorite apps, especially now that they added Blu-Ray release dates.

Also, I'll also give a thumbs up for Convertbot. Definitely worth the $0.99.

I don't have many apps. I realised I wasn't using the vast majority, so I only keep the ones I know I'll use more often.

Oh, I see. I have 8 or 9 pages like I listed. On a lot of forums I see people saying "I keep it down to [low number] of pages" and I didn't get it. There are definitely things I can get rid of, but I don't see the point, I know I'll use or play them occasionally and a lot of pages doesn't bother me (thus the farther you go, the less important to me they become).

I love how integrated Now Playing is with all its features. It's so nice to be able to browse upcoming Blu Ray releases and add them to my Netflix queue since that's the only stuff I watch from Netflix. Way easier than trying to find that info out on Netflix's own site. Definitely the best app for all your movie needs, especially if you have Netflix.

MLB At Bat lives up to the rave reviews and then some. It's an amazing app. One of the few that makes me feel like we're finally reaching convergence.

Looks cool, but is it worth getting if you only have an ipod touch?

Is there any kind of map software yet? I like google maps but I wish there was something that worked like google maps but didn't require internet connection. I don't need it to locate me I just want to be able to see a map and get list directions. Would the new tom tom software work like I want?
