Definitely more manly, but CMD-T is inarguably quicker.

I want an actual solution, not a patchwork involving stylesheets.Fatalah said:Why not Chrome? I think there's an adblocking solution now.
what're you using tabs for, PANSY? real men have 30 windows opened up.Liu Kang Baking A Pie said:I open new tabs by typing the command in the Terminal after I've killed a bear with my teeth.
Liu Kang Baking A Pie said:Uh, IE8, Chrome, and Safari are multiple times faster than Firefox 3, and Opera 10 isn't that fast.
Edit: Turns out IE8 isn't as fast as Microsoft said!

I still don't understand why it's so hard to fix that. I'm almost certainly going to move on from Safari to Firefox 3.5 and I've been clinging to Safari pretty hardcore up until now but I'm just sick of the GIF issues never being fixed.panda21 said:gifs no longer beachballing in the latest webkit nightly? still runs terribly but it doesnt freeze anymore
might be snow leopard though
I'm getting there myself. As much as I love the Safari browsers speed, I'm hating how I need to kill it maybe 2-3 times a day due to gifs murdering it.badcrumble said:I still don't understand why it's so hard to fix that. Is Safari 64-bit in Snow Leopard, and do the gifs run at regular speed or reduced speed?giga said:Safari 4 in 10.6 hasn't beach balled or crashed once for me. No beachballs either.
This page didn't freeze or beachball me: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=348315
Really? I had this issue sometimes on the beta but its running perfectly now.quadriplegicjon said:fuuuck. GAF has crashed my safari 4 so many times.. im going back to firefox 3.. they need to fix this shit. cause i really like the browser otherwise.

Yes, but i'm not even running 64-bit. Large gifs are still bullet time, but they don't beachball or freeze up my browser.RubxQub said:Is Safari 64-bit in Snow Leopard, and do the gifs run at regular speed or reduced speed?

Core Duo = 32 bit.rezuth said:Why not?
i got top sites turned off....giga said:top sites.
i'm glad you're not in charge. the new version makes a lot of great changes.xabre said:Why do they even bother anymore? Tabbed browsing was the end. Now they just update for the sake of updating.

Almost wonder if Apple is taking a "animated gif is the past, animated png is the future" approach, and just not support animated gifs to try and push the format?
I can't think of a reason why they would just leave this issue alone for so long.

No issues on my version of Chrome.mrkgoo said:I agree the gif thing is bad, but I understand it's part of webkit? Does Chrome exhibit the same issue? And for the record, I get severe beachballing, but it eventually works it self out (even if for a moment). I can't even recall when I had Safari crash and quit on me.
I'm still using Opera, dammit, because Chrome has no features and I can sure as helll tell it's faster than Firefox.Liu Kang Baking A Pie said:Uh, IE8, Chrome, and Safari are multiple times faster than Firefox 3, and Opera 10 isn't that fast.

I imagine the size of people who care about large animated gifs is very small...but very vocal :lolckohler said:I tolerate the terrible animated GIF support because I love everything else about the browser. Still, I've sent bug reports to Apple in the past about this. I have some theories why it's still broken:
1) Fixing it would somehow break the ACID 3 test.
2) Fixing it would somehow fudge up Safari on iPhone
3) Fixing it would mean replacing some core part of the OS
None the less, by not fixing it they are shooting themselves in the foot as this thread clearly indicates.
gabe90 said:So glad I found this thread to vent. I LOVE Safari and couldn't understand why GAF keeps crashing it.
It's strange too, cause it's not all gifs, it's just gifs on certain websites. Considering that I spend so much time on the GAF, it's really a problem for me.
Is there a petition of some kind? I'm sure Apple knows about the problem, but wow, I am glad to have found other people who are as frustrated as I am.

I must have filed over a dozen crash reports to Apple plus sent bug reports a couple times to apple's feedback page.
not much else we can do except choose to use a different browser.
at least the final release of safari 4 is slightly less shit than the beta (takes more gif madness to crash it). the word that 10.6 reduces the crashiness of it all is a good thing.
So does Chrome. It's a Webkit problem, not a Safari problem.Surfheart said:I can't believe Apple can leave this gif issue outstanding for so long. It's really a WTF kind of thing because it makes them look baaaad, especially since Safari has this issue on Windows as well.
Because JavaScript is totally what makes a browser fast. Take GAF for example. I can definitely feel Nitro and V8 rendering the posts faster.Liu Kang Baking A Pie said:Uh, IE8, Chrome, and Safari are multiple times faster than Firefox 3, and Opera 10 isn't that fast.

MEMORY HOG like nobodies business (and if its for top sites, why cant I use that turn page thing they do for the I-Touch/Phone? or is it there but not for windows? and if it is what am I missing doing wrong?)
As for Microsoft Giving up, 80% to like 6% says hi.

No software (whether open source or not) can be installed at the desktop level unless it's "certified." IE 6 is certified, yet every other modern browser out there isn't.
And the CRA makes it completely impossible to certify new software. So we're all stuck with antiquated software. Even when we want to upgrade to a new version of a software we already own, it's treated like a new piece of software.

still like Safari though. I've somehow gotten used to slow motion gifs.
but MamaRobotnik is Safari's #1 enemy. NPD thread = crash
