I'm not going to sit here and say that there aren't people who had problems with those things, I just know that 99% of the time none of that was an issue for me. Either way, though, there should be the option to pick between the two. Apple looks totally amateurish now having touted this "great new tab interface" for the beta and the completely ripping it out for the final release.

Brushed metal being removed was a huge step forward, sure, but there is still a lot of UI inconsistency. Hell, the fact that Apple can't even decide what button style to use in the "unified" menubars alone shows that.

I don't want to argue too much about the tabs issue. I can agree to disagree. your joking post in the other thread about the tab wars replacing the OS wars go me thinking that I shouldn't go off the deep end talking about this.

and you're right about there still being consistency issues in aqua. it's better than before, but still not "perfect". that's why I was hoping to see a UI update today in SL. they're adding those black gloss buttons all over the place so I thought (hoped) it might be part of a bigger update system-wide.

So far, I'm very happy with Safari 4.0 final. Putting the tabs back at the bottom was the smartest thing they could have done. It's also a LOT snappier than the beta.

No, the smartest thing they could have done would have been to give people the option between tab styles. Touting your "great new tab scheme" and then dumping it for the final version instead of polishing it or making it option is pretty stupid.

While I agree the choice would be nice, it isn't stupid to make the changes from a beta. People hated it, so it's a good thing they listened. And I liked the top tabs, although I'm quickly readjusting back :lol

it's only stupid if it's universally loved.

I think you'll find that most casual users barely notice the change and the uptight super apple nerds generally disliked tabs on top (with some exceptions, of course :)

yeah, it's a little embarrassing since they touted the feature but I guess they figured it was worth the slight hit to their marketing message.

The speed is incredible. This browser is BUILT for forum usage. So often I pound "Page Down" or "End" to get to the final post or the bottom of the screen as it lags me in steps to the bottom. With this...one push...everything is already loaded.

Random mention:

Cmd + up/down = top of page/bottom of page.
Option/Ctrl/Fn + up/down = page up/down.

I thought fn+up /down were the page up/page downs.
I just tried 'em all and they all worked so I thought I'd mention it.

I think they might have also fixed the general GIF crappyness from before

it's ok except for reeeaaallly big gifs.

a 3 MB or larger gif will freeze safari 4 for a long time.

Goodbye, fair top tabs. You were an interesting idea, but you just didn't work out in practice.
yeah, but they should've let us pick between the two. i got used to that style in chrome, and liked keeping them up top (they just shouldn't take up half the bar when there's only two tabs open). i don't like not having the choice.

Damnit I really liked tabs on top. On a small screen, those few extra vertical pixels weren't that bad, and I wasn't clicking on those tabs anyways. I have the tab switch mapped to circular two finger motion through multiclutch.

I wish I could bring them back on top, but I see that the old trick for moving them from beta doesn't work anymore. I even searched through safari executable strings for something that could be used for this, and nothing so far.

Now I'm all fuckin' confused. Just getting used to the top-tabs. Grr.
Loading bar looks nicer though. They should keep that look for the Marble interface whenever it comes out.

really large animated gifs still crash safari for me (it freezes so long that I force quit.) an example? go to page 3 of the e3 gifs thread and watch the 3 lord of the rings gifs. if they don't crash your mac, tell me you’re using an octo-core mac pro or something.

Gifs still run slow on mine, but it hasn't crashed at all. I even checked out the page you said to..

I have a SR Macbook Pro

2.2 GHz, 2GB of RAM.

I got the spinning beachball showing up for at least a minute after it tries to load up those 3 gifs. It's on page 2 of the thread. And now it's locked up completely.

but I noticed that other pages with a single 3 or 4 mb gif didn't crash or freeze safari. They just load real slow

2.4 ghz iMac 4gb ram.

My computer runs better than when I bought it 3 years ago.

Bravo Apple.
Safari 4 made your computer run better?

I dunno. I feel like Safari and iTunes run better right now than they ever have.

Everything is so smooth most of the time on my Mac, and Snow Leopard is supposed to make things even better.

whens snow leopard supposed to be out? i kinda feel like i just bought leopard...

Ugh, going back to bottom tabs, the loss of space, and especially the fact that the first tab knocks down the entire page, is maddening. I wish they would have refined the top tabs so much. Goddamned babies can't adjust.

I'm amazed at how fast this is over the previous Safari 4 beta build. And apparently it's going to be 50% faster in Snow Leopard (if you have a 64 bit Mac) which just seems crazy.

You can finally clear your recent google searches again now too ;)

I was all excited... until I found out there's no Windows version (and never will be.)

Oh well, I'm sticking to Firefox then.

Why not Chrome? I think there's an adblocking solution now.

So I am having a strange issue..

Netflix queue list allows you to click and drag a movie title in order to reorder your list. When I do this with safari, its completely clunky and freezes for a few seconds here and there.. it works perfectly on firefox. is this just an issue with my computer, or is there a reason why safari 4 can't handle this?

It's pretty good, but not the fastest. Here is a list, (1 being the fastest, 6 being the slowest) from my experience:

1) Firefox Minefield (what currently use)
2) Opera 10
3) Firefox 3
4) Google Chrome
5) Safari 4
6) Internet Explorer 8

Uh, IE8, Chrome, and Safari are multiple times faster than Firefox 3, and Opera 10 isn't that fast.

Edit: Turns out IE8 isn't as fast as Microsoft said!

For me it is :P

IE is still slow as shit for me. Minefield and Opera 10 are fantastic on my laptop.

Your 1's and 0's must be different than everyone else's 1's and 0's!

I'm torn.

The tabs at the top LOOKED nicer, but are a PRICK from a practicality standpoint.

I'm glad they're back at the bottom again. I'm enjoying Safari 4. It's nice.

is that a page loading test?

I'm still surprised safari 4 was that much faster than FF 3.5 and chrome 2. very impressive.

Or, that the speed difference between the different browsers are hardly noticeable in every day use.

No new tab button = :( and a switch back to Chrome.

really? on the mac version (I assume you're on windows) there's two. one on the far right of the tab bar and another that you can place within the menu bar if you choose "customize" and add it in.
