Apple releasing first Public Betas of iOS 10 and macOS Sierra today

Feels like Apple is happy to include big updates into .1 and .2 iOS updates through the year now. They're holding things back IMO.

Do you use Apple Music or is this just uploaded manually using your computer?

Anybody else missing a Volume Meter indicator when changing the volume using the buttons while music or a video is playing?

Also, if you are listening to a song in Apple music, and then rotate your phone to landscape, does your screen change to a black video?

Uploaded manually and no I don't use Apple Music.

Now that things have settled for a couple of weeks, iOS 10 honestly seems like a pretty small upgrade.

iMessage, I don't care about.
The Photos enhancements are restoring iPhoto features they had taken away.
The Music changes seem to be out of the frying pan and into the dumpster fire.
Don't care about the News stuff.

Honestly, the more 3D Touch-centric UI and notifications are the only really exciting things to me. And SiriKit, I guess, but even then, until they open SiriKit up more, it's so limited in application at this point that I probably won't use it at all.

I'm really hoping iOS 10.1, etc. includes some major features (like more SiriKit APIs) to make up for 10 being sort of small to the EUX. I also wonder if this is the smaller update before they do a major update with the overhauled 2017 iPhone.

It's still a big change even if you don't care about it. Huge changes to Music, Maps, widgets, imessage and photos, plus whatever else changed on the back end. I don't remember photos ever having facial recognition and automatic slideshow capabilities so not sure what you're talking about there.

I'm fine with there being 3-4 medium sized releases per year instead of one huge one. That's gotta take a lot of stress off the development team

Remember people. If there's a change you don't think should be there, make sure you're sending feedback. It's only the first Beta. There's still 2/3 months before release. A lot can change based on it.

Also, I can't believe my Documents syncing is still going. It seems stuck at 99% but since there's no time remaining or percentage visible anywhere I can't tell. For all I know it could be stuck on the last file or even done. I don't understand why every time I try to open the folder, the Finder shits the bed. Nothing appears, clicking gives an error sound, closing the window with Command+W crashes the Finder. Hopefully Beta 2 will be fixed. It doesn't seem to have moved my files. It just hid the folder icons for some reason. Even though the folder itself seems to still be in my User folder, opening one of the Documents folders shows it as being located in iCloud Drive as the root. I don't like this. It's just confusing to the user. Just keep it as being in my User folder, but put a Cloud icon in the titlebar or status bar or somewhere to signify that it's an iCloud synced folder. It already has icons for all the stuff in the list.

Edit: Oh, and it's probably a side-effect of how YouTube works, but it's nice that even when a YT video is in PIP mode, the player itself remains usable. Even though the video is black, you can scrub through it and use the controls if you need to. Still, that stuff should be in the PIP window itself just because it's wonky to have to switch to the tab to control the video.

Does anyone else feel like the visual design of the lock screen notifications makes them look like they should be tapped to open instead of sliding to the right? Maybe it's because I used to have a Nexus 5 and they remind of the Android notifications.

By the way, for anyone who was having troubles like me with the 'software update failed' error, I downloaded it through a US VPN and it worked.

On 6S(+) you can 3D Touch many of them.

Looks like I was wrong about iCloud Drive Documents syncing not having a proper progress indicator...

So that's cool. Though I'd also like a menubar status indicator.

Another thing I don't like though, and I wish I could disable it...

This comes up if you move something from your Desktop or Documents folder into a folder that's not in iCloud. It's annoying. Especially for people using the Desktop as a download destination like me. It's also inaccurate seeing as the files are on my Mac so why make it sound like they're only on the cloud? I already disabled the "remove stuff when your space runs out" option because I ain't gonna have none of that. I have 500GB on my MacBook, I'm sure I'll manage.

Edit: Oh, and also I don't like that it doesn't sync custom icons. I wish it would support them, both on synced macOS machines and the iOS app.

It's telling you that the file isn't going to be synced any more. Describing it the way they have is weird, but it makes sense as well to someone who doesn't know the specifics of how the syncing apps work. The fact that you've changed your download location isn't Apple's problem.

It should be optional. There's no checkbox to not show it anymore. There should at least be an option.

And I'm fine with this, too. I'm just hoping that some of the later iOS 10 releases include additional improvements that expand what we're capable of doing with our phones.

For some reason, my letter X isn't working. Capital X is but if I try to type a lowercase X it doesn't work. I only just noticed this. I don't know if it's conflicting software or what. But it doesn't do it on my iMac.

Also I can type Command+X to cut teXt or something, but only if I try to type a plain vanilla X it doesn't work.

Edit: Haha, I'm a stupid idiot. Turns out I accidentally created a null BetterTouchTool key command that made it so when I pressed "X" it would "do nothing". Oops!

Also the Finder is shit with iCloud Drive, have I mentioned that? Because yes I have. It was uploading fine, but super slowly, when all of a sudden it crashes and gets stuck in a relaunch and crash loop. I had to reboot then force quit it and make sure to not reopen the folders. Weird thing is it only crashes with List view, not Icon view. Of course List view is what I use all the time.

Time to send some feedback. About iCloud Drive. Not sure about the X problem. For all I know it could be related to my T problem, but I don’t think so since the T key was dead completely, even with shortcuts and stuff. The X here is working fine as long as I don’t want a lowercase X. I don’t even know where to start troubleshooting my X problem.

Also for some reason it’s impossible to type in Safari right now. There’s a 1-3 second delay between each key. So I have to type this out in Notes where there’s no delay. Safari has always had a problem from time to time but this is ridiculous. And all of a sudden. So it must be something. It’s a weird delay too. Like if I type a bunch of stuff, but then click somewhere else while waiting, it then types that stuff in the new location. Or if I type stuff and then press Back, it sends the keypresses to the new page I’m on.

And my fans are now going wild because of iCloud Drive uploading. Or at least some process called fbahelperd which is taking between 350%-600% of my CPU. Guess I’ll include all that in my report. Hopefully these initial bugs can be squashed by Beta 2. (Fake Edit: fbahelperd belongs to the Feedback Assistant. WTF? It's just sitting there waiting for me to switch back to it and compose a report. Why would it take all that CPU? I assume it was gathering the diagnostic logs.)

They should do the cloud based stuff in .1 or .2 aka maps/drives etc, and let the full releases be changed to the core.

Anyone had new have an editor recommended menu pop up on news? I have no idea how to get back to it.

You should get something like this. It's awesome and what I use. The car park seems to works for me with it

SoundBot SB360 Bluetooth 4.0 Car Kit Hands-Free Wireless Talking & Music Streaming Dongle w/ 10W Dual Port 2.1A USB Charger + Magnetic Mounts + Built-in 3.5mm Aux Cable https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00RH29CJO/?tag=neogaf0e-20

So I grabbed this and I like it a lot, but it doesn't seem like it's working with the whole parked car feature? Nothing gets marked on the map when I park somewhere. But it apparentk works for you, yeah?

That's weird, yea works for me

Where is the shuffle and repeat toggle? I don't see it anywhere. surely they didn't remove it?

With a track playing, open the Music App, tap on the 'Now Playing' bar at the bottom of the screen.

This should bring up the Album Art with the regular play controls (scrub left/right, play pause, volume, etc).

Scroll 'Down' from this screen. You'll get Shuffle/Repat and a list of what's "Up Next".

There it is, thanks. I would like for it to be on the lock screen too but oh well. There's just so much empty space everywhere because of their big ass fonts and buttons.

My alarm icon won't go away even though I have no alarms set. Anyone else having this bug?

Oh shit. Just realized my phone is also connected via Bluetooth to my car.

I completely forgot about this because my car only does talk, so I have to use the adapter that I told you about. So I guess it is using my car's bluetooth? I don't see why it would work with that bluetooth but not the adapter. Seems like it should work with either.

HomeKit with my Hue lights is screwed up. First registered to my boyfriend's phone, but one light was showing unavailable despite still working in the official Hue app. Then he invited me to the HomeKit and all the lights are listed but say unavailable.

Because car Bluetooth is different than normal Bluetooth, it actually communicates back to the phone that it's a car and not just an audio receiver

Oh well this will still hold me over until CarPlay. Thanks!

That's dumb.

At least you can manually set it when you really need to. Like a mall parking lot

The Sierra beta is a buggy mess. Barely any apps work. Definitely not daily driver material.

Works just great for me. Chrome, office 2016, vlc, plex spotify, tranmission and every other app in my rotation works the same. on a 2013 MBA

the only issues are just macOS bugs like mission control and etc.

Eh, it works mostly alright for me. Mac Tweetbot shits itself trying to play videos, and I've had some graphical artifacts (I've had similar artifacts on El Cap and Yosemite betas before), but otherwise it's been okay.

The only major Sierra bugs for me aside from iCloud Drive Documents syncing causing shenanigans while uploading, is the constant crashes I get from Metal and when I use Maps the com.apple.geod service keeps crashing.

Also, it reset the sped up animation setting I had set for Mission Control entering and exiting. I forgot how slow that animation is.

The animation speed depends on your gesture speed now.

My widgets aren't working anymore ( the one when you slide on the left in the home screen) even after rebooting my phone, anyone ?

Have you tried going into the relevant apps at least once? The Logitech Harmony app actually tells you to do that now and again before it shows anything.

Has anyone had any troubles with iBooks? After I updated my Mac to Sierra it will no longer sync my PDFs between it and my iDevices.

Oh my goodness. I can't believe I only just discovered it. Safari in Sierra FINALLY has a "default page zoom" option like Chrome does. Which just sets the overall zoom setting base for the browser.

On my MacBook this is super important. I run it at the 1920x1200 setting, and with zoom set to 100%, everything is pretty darn small. NeoGAF is practically unreadable. So until now I was using an extension called QuickStyle to apply CSS to specific websites to change sizes of fonts and stuff. For NeoGAF I had to do a lot of tweaking. Making some text bigger, keeping other stuff less zoomed, all that jazz. And other sites I'd set to different zooms. I'd apply the CSS zoom: xxx%; to either the HTML or BODY element depending on the website. Sometimes it would work, sometimes not. Other times I'd have to apply it to a different element like the main DIV wrapper. It was too much work.

Now it finally has a default Zoom and I'm slightly happier. First we got a more Chrome-like status bar replacement. Then we got pinned tabs. Now default zoom settings! I set mine to 125%. It makes things big enough to compensate for my extra screen space. No more wasted emptiness on the sides of the page! Unfortunately it still doesn't remember any custom zoom settings for different sites. So like if I need to zoom in or out on a specific site, it won't remember that. But hey, it's progress!

And guess what, we also got a better looking Reading List with website icons for pages that don't have a thumbnail...

And even favicons.... In the Bookmarks Sidebar that is...
We're one step closer to favicons in tabs! Right, guys? Guys? We're gonna get those eventually... Right? Guys?

Really would like slide to unlock back. Or at least the option. Thought I'd get used to it but it's just annoying.

I wonder if it's going to be one of those features that will make sense with one of the new features in the iPhone 7, but will be terrible for all older phones, like the new app switcher.

I've had issues with Music and Calendar/Up Next and found no remedy. Sometimes I can get other widgets to load by scrolling on that page, but those two have been especially thorny.

I just want the next update to fix rest to unlock.

Having to physically press the home button to unlock with Touch I.D. is still annoying.

Isn’t pressing the home button to unlock the most common way of doing it since Touch ID was introduced?

You just rest your finger on the Touch ID sensor to unlock it.
But that assumes the screen is on, doesn't it. From fully locked with screen off, you either press the home button or you at least wake the screen with the sleep button and then rest your finger.

You didn't even have to swipe. You just had to press the Sleep button and rest your finger on the Touch ID sensor.

The toggle will hopefully be fixed in the next beta, so it's just a temporary annoyance.

Anyone think Beta 2 will come out this week? Think it'd be tomorrow or Tuesday? I'm thinking and hoping to put iOS 10 on my phone with beta 2. (However not until I can start fresh, and I won't do that until I can export the few important And I can't wait to see what was fixed with Sierra. Hopefully they got my hundreds of crash logs from the MTLCompilerService process that completely broke a bunch of stock apps. (I can't even use Messages. And Maps half works. Or at least it was.)

Yeah Touch ID works like it always did if you press the home button to turn on.

If you use the sleep button, you have to push the home button instead of swiping.

No, the problem right now is that sometimes you have to press the home button twice.

I am currently pressing the home button, resting my finger to "unlock" it, and then pressing it again to actually go into the home screen.

There is a new option in the settings called "Rest to unlock" which should make that second button press go away.

For me, I press home, hold, and it goes to home screen. iPhone 6.
