Apple releasing first Public Betas of iOS 10 and macOS Sierra today

Connect won't be around in a few years, so might as well start forgetting about it.
Eh, if it turns into something like Spotify's social features I'll use the hell out of it. Collaborative playlists and seeing what your friends are listening are both great, engaging features to have.

Connect in its current iteration, though, is probably the single biggest symptom of Apple Music being designed first and foremost to please the music industry instead of meeting users' needs.

Safari is so laggy and mobile gaf isn't working properly for me. Not sure I'm a fan of the notification center. Notifications just seem to hang too. Spotify asked for access to Music...anyone know why? Are they gonna allow me to play my purchased music in Spotify or is it just for that new widget thing....which I'm also not a fan of.

Just warning everyone who is thinking to install macOS Sierra beta, Photoshop (Latest v via Creative Cloud subscription) crashes whenever you try to Save for Web.

I had to downgrade back from Sierra to El Capitan. There were a lot of weird problems I was getting such as:

my external Seagate HDD wasn't showing up in Finder anymore, but is there in Disk Utility
double-clicking on folders in Finder with my Magic Mouse doesn't open them, have to use the touchpad or right click and open in a new tab
Siri suddenly decided I didn't have a mic despite working fine previously

among other things.

Oh yeah, that! Not a feature I'd tempt myself. I still don't fully trust the cloud, especially automatic implementations, and especially apple's.
Yeah. I have 512GB on my MacBook and 1TB with no files on my iMac. That's plenty for my documents. I'll just sync my main files between the machines and use media streaming apps for the rest like I have been. Actually until they announced Documents syncing I was planning on just putting all my stuff in DropBox. I'll try this out first. Hopefully it works well enough.

However I don't trust it deleting files. I wouldn't even use that feature in DropBox when it came along. I want all my files with me. iCloud needs to have file history like DropBox for me to take it more seriously. Also iCloud Time Machine basically

Also an option to back up settings from my individual computers Library folder like on iOS. Devs could opt into it. Whether they're in the App Store or not as long as they're approved.

Ha. Makes me wonder if CS3 still works. I've had it for a decade and its survived numerous updates. I can't kill it. If it finally dies I'll have to find an alternative for what I do like Pixelmator.

Weird!! I just checked mine is still there

I have the App Store, music store and Newsstand all in one folder. I accidentally did the action to rename the folder, and then cancelled it-when the animation finished the App Store icon was missing.

Edit: this fixed it:
Settings” > “General “> “Reset” > “Reset Home Screen Layout“.

But it removed all my folders!! :(

Since the stock apps are now "available" in the App Store, can Apple start to update their apps without needing an entire iOS update? Or is it not really available in the App Store, and it's just more just the icon.

They're not actually in the App Store, so no. Craig confirmed that on the live Talk Show with John Gruber.

Does the homescreen pulldown-for-Spotlight gesture still work, or are Spotlight/widgets now exclusively on the farthest-left homescreen tab (and the farthest-left lockscreen tab, and the left Notification Center tab)? I feel like the latter would be more consistent, though I wouldn't mind seeing the homescreen pulldown gesture eventually reveal a file browser instead in iOS 11 or whatever.

I honk they should just get rid of the homescreen pull down for searching myself. I never understood why it needed two search screens. I assume it's still in iOS 10? Have widgets and search to the left. If anything is on the pull down screen a file browser could be a good idea.

I'll upgrade to 10 when I know FaceBook works. I don't have many apps but what I do have, I need.

As for Sierra, so far all that doesn't work for me is Carbon Copy Cloner. Which means all my backups are frozen fortunately they're working on it. Hopefully it's fixed soon. I think Crashplan might also be broken but I'm not sure. I'd just use time machine if it were reliable and I could do network backups to local Macs and not just time capsules.

Also VLC has some visual glitches with the UI. And I can't figure out how to do tabs in Sublime Text. I guess it doesn't work there? I thought it was automatic without developer intervention?

PIP is nice though. A little buggy. But it works. Can't wait for VLC to support it. Does QuickTime? Not that I even use that. I wonder if YouTube could update their player to support it and actually show full controls and other stuff in the floating window instead of just a simple default HTML5 player.

Can't wait to install Sierra on my MacBook.

You can already have something similar in VLC. Select "Float on top" in the Video menu. If you right-click the VLC icon in the dock, you can select "All Desktops" in the Options menu to get the window to persist across different spaces as well.

Yes, pulldown still works in addition to the widget screen and Notification Center. They all have spotlight searching

You can totally do this if you set up OS X Server on the Mac you want to back up to.

Also, PIP works in YouTube if using the HTML5 player. Right-click the player twice and hit "Enter picture-in-picture."

I assume pulldown doesn't bring up widgets though?

I suppose I'd be down for eventually turning it into a searchable file browser (with that particular search field prioritizing items in system storage and iCloud storage over web items etc)

Having spotlight in the pulldown seems lazy since it's also available if you pull down starting from 1 inch higher. Its like they forgot it was there

I prefer searching from the homescreen pulldown because it also activates the keyboard.

That's a good point. But I still feel like it's taking up a primo feature spot. 3 different spots for spotlight is too much. Change one of the other areas then

Facebook works in PB1? At least I've been using the app a few times without any issues.

Played around with iOS10 for the last few days and I hate how the bluetooth audio (in the car) drops out 24/7 forcing me to get my phone out... this is literally game breaking for me because I dislike the local radio stations when driving to/from work.

Huh, I haven't had a single Bluetooth audio drop in over 5 hours of driving since updating.

I am noticing that songs will start super low for 2 seconds then go to normal. Not sure about that

That has never worked for me. Believe me I thought it might. It doesn't work or show on Fullscreen spaces. Only desktops. I only use fullscreen apps.

I'll have to look into that. So Server lets me set a Mac (Like my iMac which I use as a server anyway) as a valid networked Time Capsule for Time Machine? Also I'd assume Sierra's Server stuff isn't out yet of course so it's not like I can do anything now except wait for CCC to update.

Does Time Machine still suck though? I've never had good luck even with local backups.

Yeah I know that. But it's just a simple player with a pause button, a close button and an exit PIP button. No scrub bar or information. I'm wondering if this API allows devs to dig in deeper and display info like that if they want or if it just shows the video and that's all with no control customization.

Numerous people have reported random crashing with FaceBook. Also, apparently PokemonGo is broken in 10 and since I accidentally got addicted to that today it might not be a good idea to update yet.

It's supposed to be connected to "Hey siri" but I actually use that feature a lot and won't turn it off. So I'm living in audio hell until PB2

Re: the spotlight search. Earlier in PB1 I used to be able to pull down the Notification Center just a little bit and let go, and spotlight search would appear, keyboard and everything. But that seems to have stopped working all of a sudden. Would be a substitute for the home screen pull-down, even though that's muscle memory at this point

Edit: just got it to work again, so who knows

Haven't had any issues personally with FB.
In Pokemon Go the AR is not working but the rest is.

Yes, if you set up Server.app on a Mac and enable the Time Machine service, it'll appear as a backup destination for other Macs on the network. As far as Time Machine being reliable, I've had okay luck with it, but I've definitely heard mixed things from others. If I had to guess, it'll probably get an overhaul once APFS becomes standard, since APFS enables some new features that should make backups more reliable (clones and snapshots!).

My understanding is that the PIP player is set in stone and can't be customized.

A nice minor thing I noticed in Sierra: if you have Safari full-screen and open a new window, it split-screens it instead of making another full-screen window.

Hopefully. I only use CCC because Time Machine has never been good enough. In my past experience it's only worked well enough when connected directly to a machine, but networked drives always caused problems with it just stopping suddenly. It has been touted to be able to cache backups when the destination isn't available but I've never noticed it work. So I use CCC which is 100% reliable for me as long as the machine on the other end or the disk is available and running.

Right now at least. I mean it's only for video playback so it's pretty much just for web videos that aren't Flash and hopefully soon the most popular video players. (QuickTime doesn't even support it? WTF?) Hopefully they'll open the API up a little to enable some other features. Really all we need in PIP is a time bar. Please let VLC have PIP!

On my iPad Mini 4 when I hit YouTube links in Safari it now just takes me to the browser version of YouTube rather than ask to open in the YT app. No way in share menu to easily open the video up in the app.(strangely copying the link and searching for that in the app doesn't take you to the video, which seems like an obvious thing YouTube would be able to do) Very annoying.

The only change I really notice is the visual change for notification and that... which frankly looks pretty bad to me, the round cornered boxes... looks like a step back a few years in terms of visual design. Looked nicer the way it was. Getting some odd hiccups, oh and iPlayer just opens and immediately returns to the home screen so that doesn't work. Lucky I rarely use it (but I did want to picture-in-picture Wimbledon today and couldn't).

Facebook updated all their apps just after PB1 hit so they all work fine now.
