Applying for jobs is exhausting and soul-crushing

A three-step process for such a position? Who the hell do these people think they are? Fucking hell lol. Good luck anyway, but if I went for something like that and they said it was a three-step process, I'd be like bye.

Pretty typical for retail. You go in and fill out the application at the kiosk, a manager on duty looks it over and does a brief interview, then you do one with HR along with the psych/personality tests, and then there is an interview with a department manager. A lot of this is to weed out people because even cashier positions can have hundreds of applicants.

I had to take a 'math and logic' test for my upcoming position but it was less math and more wut. It had questions like "an apple costs $0.15, an orange $0.20, and a banana $0.25 - how much is a pear?"

I think they were testing your reasoning skills, common logic would think apple red, orange is orange, banana is yellow, pear is green.

So ROYGBIV Green is the next step and the increments are $0.05 so Pear $0.30

What the hell. That's so dumb. Pears don't even look green to me most of the time (granted, I'm colorblind)!

There's a company out in Vancouver (I'm on Toronto) that asked if I can relocate and how much I want to be paid roughly. I set the range at 55-60k and relocation at the end of August with the ability to start working remote as soon as the coming week. Position is for web development. Anyone else think I overreached?

Damn, salaries in the US for this generally seem much higher in the first place. The better dollar makes me wonder if I should move back.

Slightly lower when not in Seattle. Though frankly I thought it would be more.

If your title is Software Engineer or Senior Software Engineer things get much better.

What exactly is the difference between a Web Developer and a Software Engineer? Are you ONLY doing HTML or also Javascript /jQuery?

Javascript too. No JQuery though. More like MERN/MEAN stuff.

Emailed the hiring manager this past Monday to follow-up on my interview two weeks ago and my application status as he said I'd get an answer from them (hired or not) by last Friday, and I still haven't heard back from him or anyone else.

:(

Currently working a shit retail job, averaging 18 hours a week.

There's guys recruiting for job vacancies surrounding wind turbines (idk specifics yet), about 90 odd jobs being created from it. I sent my CV off early, hoping to hear back.

You should follow up. They may be waiting on approval from some exec and need a push. Don't give up until they say you didn't get the job!

Any tips for applying for Federal jobs in the states? How to format the federal resume.
Outside of using buzz words should I write as much as possible to explain my experience in the different positions I've held for HR to read?

I'm looking for GS 5-7

Well they can't divulge the 'correct' answer because it'd harm the integrity of the test, but I do know I passed the test and that I answered with the same cost as the apple, because those fruits are closer genetically I assume given that I had a pear and apple tree growing up which cross-pollinated.

However upon thinking about the question out loud I think maybe that's meant to be a spoken question. Like it was meant to be "how much is a PAIR?", rather than pear, and the answer is 2. But because it was written, it was spelled pear, removing that ambiguity.

So excited!! Aced my phone interview last week and just got a call today for an in-person interview. I have one scheduled with the HR team (which I've never done before, curious to see what kind of questions they'll ask) and then right after I will meet to talk to people from the department. The questions in my phone interview was what I'm used to being asked in a in-person interview, so I have no idea what to go over ~_~ Anyone been placed in a similar situation?

Really want this to work out because I'll be moving to a new apartment, where it will be a big commute to my current part time job. This new position will make my life so much easier ;(

Congrats on making it to the next step! A lot of the time when they bring you in after the phone screen, they're seeing if you'd be a good cultural fit. HR will probably ask you some additional standard interview questions, but you may get some more personal questions from the people in the department. I've been asked about my hobbies, things I like to do outside of work, etc. Especially on small teams, they like to try and get a sense for the person they're interviewing to see if things will work out from a personality/company culture standpoint. Good luck!

Yea most likely a culture fit. If you are meeting the team members expect an interview and to repeat some of the same things you did for the first interview. They don't have a final say in the decision but still do well because most likely the decision makers will listen to what the team members said. I am currently waiting for an answer and got done with this phase last week and a half. good luck.

Have an interview tomorrow which states 'casual' dress code. Any tips? I'm assuming that means no suit, but not jeans and tshirt. So that leaves a lot of middle ground. Happy to go buy stuff if necessary.

It's for a project manager role in a small company in central London.

It is a variation on a common interview question, I expect they just want to see your explanation:

That seems pretty obtuse for a logic test. More usually they'd be '5c for a vowel' or similar

Heard back. Didn't get the job.

I was told that I interviewed well, but they had 8 people to choose from and they went with someone else in the end.

I just emailed back to thank them for their time and that I understand and respect their decision.

Got a response back finally but they went with someone else. They liked me it seems and put me on file so that is a plus. Now to keep it pushing and get even stronger, this will only fuel me more to be more aggressive.

For the record I wasn't saying my answer was right I was giving an example of how you could answer it. It's a question where they want to see your reasoning, but hearing that they just wanted an amount written down is a little confusing. Usually there is space to state why/how you came to that conclusion.

Someone from a recruitment agency phoned me earlier, I assumed it was my ex, told her to fuck off. Only it wasn't her.

Luckily I already have a job

Almost done with the first week of my new job as a Digital Court Reporter. So far my tasks are limited, but I also am assured I am doing the job efficiently and learning new tasks and policies. It's a great feeling after being unemployed for so long.

Here's the thing though: I don't want to stop here. I'm like a hungry dog who was given a bone, and am already thinking about my next meal. I want to move up and make a higher salary so that I can finally have a secure future (and start dreaming about owning my own place, among other things).

My supervisor didn't get his current position starting where I did. What he recommended was "lateral promoting". As in, looking elsewhere in different fields based on the skills you've acquired in this job as well as previous jobs.

That's what I want to figure out from here out. I want to create a blueprint so that I know where to move from here. I want to be ready when the opportunity comes, but I don't know where to keep an eye out for it.

anyone got any tips for handling gaps in your CV? I took some time off after being made redundant as I got a decent severance package - but can I put something like 'sabbatical' on a CV? As I have my career history in reverse chronological order it'd be right up there on the top

That feel when you go to an interview, get told you're one out of 4 people who they even bothered to interview (out of hundreds, I assume, it was a very nice position) and then feel you did rather well, only for them to not as much as call you back to let you know they went with someone else, despite saying so.

Fucking pisses me off.

I mean it's one thing to lie, but can't you just omit the fact if you don't want to pull any attention towards it? If they ask during an interview you could just say you took some personal time off or something.

You a lawyer? Can't you say you were doing some solo practice during that time, but you prefer the law firm/in house life and want to change back?

Sure, thats what I've done -but it gets pulled out in every phone call or face to face I've had. Its a big gap (since July last year). Took a few months off with the family and did some training but wasn't heavily looking for work until the start of this year - and still looking.

not a lawyer, just a project manager.

If you have gaps in your employment history, try to freelance on a project or two. When they ask, say that you've been freelancing for a while and would like to jump back in-house, and point to those projects as a baseline of sorts.

For digital marketers trying to get back in the field, this is a godsend.

Just say you were manning the biggest project of your life, your family. I'm sure that'll melt some hearts.

This is basically what I was getting at, though. Get one freelance project and you have an excuse and something to put on your resume. If you're one of the people ITT that's been looking for years, there's no reason why you can't do this, or write a book or something. Literally any work on your own can be spun into how you were starting your own business but it wasn't for you. It can help wipe any stink of desperation from you in an interview. Plus, you may actually LIKE being an entrepreneur (perish the thought!)

The internet makes this kind of thing so much easier than it used to be.

Got two emails asking for interviews from big companies, the first one send me a link for an extra application form which doesn't work and they haven't responded to follow-ups. The 2nd didn't reply to me after I gave them my availability for last week.

Wtf the only thing that would make sense at this point is if Ashton Kutcher came out and it turns out I've been punked this whole time.

Its annoying but recruiters are as over-worked as everyone else. Keep emailing and call if you have their phone #.

Three applications this evening, my grad school alma mater, Brookings Institution, and Jane Goodall's institute. There's a lot of job opportunities in the kind of nonprofit databasing that i do.

Long story is that i'm working in my first grown-up job, but feel kind of underpaid and the organization is a little fragile financially, so i'm looking to jump somewhere more stable (the university), or more lucrative and career relevant (DC area jobs).

This seems kind of like "why are manhole covers round?"

There's not really one right answer, but it can reveal a lot about how you think.

Kinda confused what to do with one application of mine. I got shortlisted from a ton of applicants and had to record a video of myself just answering a simple question, it's been about 3 weeks since I sent them the video and I haven't heard anything.

Should I call/email their HR and see what's up? they're a very large company so maybe this is how long they usually take but idk.

Yes, any time you don't get a response follow up. Follow up once or twice a week for two or three weeks. Follow up until they officially turn you down or you find something else.

What do you do? Is it possible for you to work from home/for yourself?
I don't think working from home is a good idea for someone with SA. I actually got a Janitorial/Housekeeping job at this new and fancy looking furniture store. I'm so happy and nervous.

Yes. I have a real job that's not undergrad researcher or a graduate student.

Awesome. Congrats! (You just weren't clear)

Social anxiety? I think it's fine if there's a balance, or you work at cafe's and such. But I really have no idea.

Good luck with the new job!
