Applying for jobs is exhausting and soul-crushing

Just got back from a second round interview for a job I really want. Of course, the downside to early morning interviews is that, when they go poorly (seriously, it was like a firing squad: 12 people asking me questions, usually hypotheticals), you have the entire day to play everything back in your head...

or play games.

as long as you can learn from your mistakes. then i believe you have done all that you could. just keep applying. i am sure you did great.

In the post I made above, the recruiter who contacted me about the job did so the morning after I had submitted my application and resume. We shot emails back and forth for about 10 minutes and I had a phone interview set up. I think it depends on the recruiter or hiring personnel at that company.

Thanks, that makes me feel a bit better. It just felt really strange to get a suck a quick response.

Still nothing on my end and approaching three years since I graduated from college. Managed to at least get a phone interview for a warehouse job in my town but already got the feeling I wasn't going to get it due to a lack of experience in machines and such, which proved true. Shame because the pay was great even for a part time position and nearly twice as much what I make in either of my jobs.

Approaching seven years working at the fast food place I've been at. Just sort of numb to everything now, though I am getting fed up with the way my bosses treat everyone. My Gamestop job is fine I guess, but I'm just not a salesmen at heart and don't like pushing on people super hard.

I'm starting to guess that the fact I'm three years out of college with nothing to show for it on my resume is going to prevent me from ever finding anything. Been looking out of state more and more but never get anything from my applications except maybe a rejection notice every so often.

I imagine me having to move from Illinois to wherever just further impacts my chances of getting someplace out of state.

I think I got another help desk position. The phone interview with the manager went amazingly well and I'm the only person who has been submitted for the position. The hiring manager is submitting the work order so it's not set in stone just yet and I feel like I'm jinxing myself just by posting this but it's looking good.

This just came out of the blue when a recruiter emailed me.

Quick phone interview went well today. I feel like I was hitting all of the buttons the recruiter was looking for. She said that they were looking for someone to start a little earlier than I was looking to move, but she felt that I was a strong enough candidate to make the wait work if it got that far. I'll hear back next week. B)

At long, long last: a full-time, real role - no contracts - has come my way. Apparently I wasn't misreading yesterday's super-positive interview. Finally.

It will happen to you, brothers and sisters. Network the CRAP out of everyone and everything. Take every opportunity to volunteer or work in new/exciting places, even if it's a lower pay for awhile - I took that path and it's led here to something new and wonderful.

Crossing my fingers, toes, and other appendages for everyone here. The struggle is real, and I won't soon forget it.

Okay, job confirmed. Pay is pretty damn decent for me. Shitty part is that it's another contract job with the possibility of being hired on full time. But I'll take it. Just gotta' do the drug test tomorrow.

So i posted here a while back when i was job hunting as well. Maybe i can get some advice here since it was very helpful last time. I just reached the six month mark at the job i managed to get. And i'm thinking of getting out. Actually i've disliked it since the first month i got in but forced myself to stay to see if things got better.

They haven't. Part of it is that when i did the interview, the person who interviewed me described the position in a way different light then the reality. She said it was very team based (it's not). Everyone helps each other and knows each other's responsibilities (we don't). Furthermore i'm not getting along with a coworker i sit right next to. Also the job is suppose to give me experience in research but i feel like i'm not getting experience. I feel like i'm just coordinating and making sure things get done versus learning new things.

So with these cons i'm thinking (now that i can use my time off) to look for something different. However i found out that since i didn't last a year i won't be getting a recommendation letter for grad school.

So that kind of scared me. I want to apply to grad school this year and this rec letter would be very useful. But i'm at a breaking point with this job. I just can't stand the work environment. Plus six months later and i still have not found interest in this research population. What would yall suggest? Should i hold on six more months? Look for something better (forget that rec letter)?

Hope it's okay posting this here.

I meant to post here awhile back, but last December the firm that I worked for did some restructuring and let go a handful of employees, yours truly included. I had been there for about 7 years and gave me a decent severance, so I wasn't too upset. Since then, I've had a lot of time to work on other projects that I've had in mind. So, I wasn't too upset.

More recently, I found a job that I love and matched my previous pay with promise of a decent raise after a few months. So far, I couldn't be happier.

Keep looking, guys! And never settle!

Is it useful to follow-up after you've sent an editing test over a week ago to check on its status? Should I have heard back already?

Gotta think long term. If you've last six months, you can last another six months. It is worth it for the recommendation letter, assuming that they aren't just using the promise of it to bait you to stay.

Does anyone have experience with recruiters? I talked to a recruiter from a specific company earlier, and that seems logical and straight forward and is moving along.

Later today, I spoke with a recruiter that is pitching to many companies and I assume earns a commission if she can get a company a quality hire. We set up a time to meet in person. Anything to look out for or be wary of?

Push for higher pay. They need you more than you need them, and will give up a higher percentage of their cut if they really think that you will walk away. At least that is my experience with them.

Software developer here. Moved out of the country to look for a job. Been 6 weeks now but still no job. I only had 2 interviews with companies. The rest were agencies. This is getting real depressing. My problem was that I stuck with my old company for too long so I didn't get to expand my horizon.

I really cannot recommend staying with the same company for more than 3 years especially of you're not learning anything new. I freaking loved my old company so it was difficult to leave it.

I lost my job two weeks ago due to a lack of work, which is understandable since I had been sitting around GAFing everyday for three months or so while waiting for a new project. So I've been doing the unemployment thing, filling out apps, etc, and I had a really great interview last week for a job that would be rewarding, challenging and right up my alley. They sent me a really difficult test (PHP development) and I did well enough for the main guy to call me up today and tell me I had the job.

Only to call back ten minutes later to let me know his boss had already hired an off-shore team to do the work instead. Ha!

Laughter is the only response I have. Haha!

Back to the job boards.

So GAF I got a question as I'm kinda new in applying for jobs.

I applied at apple for a job and after 1 phone interview and 3 Group interviews I received this email

Congratulations,

We are happy to announce that you are part of the last group of selected candidates.
As we told you, we will now define the position we would be able to offer you. We will let you know the details as soon as possible.
If you are currently in a job, please do not resign until you get a formal offer.

Does it mean I'm gonna get a job or is there still a chance I won't get it ? as it's been almost 2 weeks since I received this mail...

I currently have a job, but it's shitacular and I'm looking to get out ASAP. Don't currently earn a great deal (£18.5k) but I'm not seeing a lot around that I'm suitable for, and especially not for the same money.

There's a lot in the £15k-17k range, but I'm not sure it's worth the hit. Technically, it'll only be slightly less after taxes.

My general field is administration, but I'd love to move to something that's not office based. A change of career at my age will not be easy though (37), and to compound things I don't even have a clue what I'd want to do.

I feel incredibly trapped.

Sorry, just needed to vent. The hunt continues.

Had an interview, answered questions well until I completely fucking was thrown off by

"Give me an example of when you were challenged by a colleague"

!?!? I couldnt answer it, Ive never had a problem with a colleague and I guess they just wanted me to say that I can work through a challenge?

Fuck me, I was really doing well until this b.s. question hit me

Being challenged wouldn't necessarily have to be regarding a problem or tension between you and a colleague. It could just be a disagreement where you were able to convince them of your position.

Congrats on the new position.

So, Indeed is legit? I always see jobs on there that I don't see elsewhere which makes me wonder if they're fake or old postings.

well indeed redirects it to the careers page most of the time. that's what i always do anyway. i do not send in my indeed resume. i always find out if there is a link to the careers page, an email, or what the company is by googling the job description.

I really need to find another job, I'm just not sure how to do it though. All these jobs are wanting someone with about five years experience. I apply for these anyway as applying to none with guarantee nothing, but damn I am fucking pissed that the only jobs I can get are dangerous manual labor jobs.

People at the job telling me that they know it's dangerous to climb on this tall stack of boxes, but it's the way they want to you to do it. Also spent nearly all day in hot ass trucks like I was back at UPS again and cut myself on two sharp planks today.

Shit, I didn't bust my ass getting two college degrees for this shit!

Any particular reason for all this extra work? If you can send in via your indeed resume it is going directly to the employer 100% of the time.

Do you ever get over the feeling that like, your resume isn't good enough? Idk coming right out of college it seems kinda... barren? Everything I've seen for software positions says one page, relevant languages/tools, and some personal projects and yet I feel like it's not enough?

Has anyone had any luck with placement agencies?

I have my Bachelors in Criminal Justice and I'm currently working Loss Prevention. I'd like to move onto a better position and better company. I'd love it to be in North Carolina but I'm in West Virginia.

I've sent out tons and tons of resumes but nothing yet so I was thinking about trying an agency but have no idea how to pick one.

I applied for a position via email that i'm excited about. I drove by the place (it's on my way to work) and saw that they had a "Now Hiring" sign in the window.

I'm considering going in and introducing myself to the manager but was wondering if that would be overkill?

Unless you also have some relevant internships to list, that's all you really should need as a new graduate.

There's always a chance you won't get a job until it's formally offered (trust me on this). But it sounds like they're at least preparing to offer you something.

I've learned this the hard way.

I have to keep reminding myself of it, too. I recently had an excellent interview and found out through a friend that works there that the board named me for the position I was applying for, but I haven't received a call yet to formally offer it. I'm not celebrating until I do.

Yep, until you get a formal offer in writing, never assume anything. A last minute logistical decision from corporate may suddenly shift a headcount opening from one department to another.

I've been told from a recent acquaintance that a Financial Advisor or on-site bank account marketer position is promising for someone currently in my college grad, retail clad predicament. Doing some research on it, at this point I'll take almost anything over what I have.

So Monday I had an in person interview for a position after a successful phone interview. I was told it was myself and one other person at this point. My chances of getting this job are 50 / 50 and I felt confident about the interview....which makes the waiting to hear about it even harder. They said I should know by the end of the week.

That's exactly how I felt about a position I applied for a few months ago. They ended up going with the other guy in a really close decision. It was so close they ended up having 4 rounds of interviews too. :(

Hope that's not the case here, I had to travel for this interview and it cost me about $175 for the trip. They seemed to like me, and had a good conversation with the guy that was interviewing me.

Thought this might be funny to share, I've had an application open with a certain company for a graduate technical analyst role for 4 months now. I had a phone interview in March that went well, I was told I'd get a reply within a week. Week and 2 days roll by and I'm told I needed to wait another week. Another week and a half without a reply. Sent on an email to the recruiter, no response. Roughly 2-3 weeks later I got an email letting me know that the person in charge of hiring graduates quit or something and that person was taking over and wanted to know if I was still interested. I told them yes (mostly to keep the option open) that same day.
Fast forward to today and still no response. Checking my application status on their site shows that its still been unchanged since before the phone interview.

Edit: They got back to me today for a final interview. Very odd process.

So I applied for a job about 2 weeks ago which was for a system administrator. Got a call back today that they want to do a skype inteview on monday. The issue I have is that what they want you to have used is something I have not used in over 3 years as I only used it when I was back at uni.

I just feel that I have forgot a lot of it as it been so long from when I last used it and that I will make an ass of myself whenever they ask me anything about this.

First roadblock. I start on either Monday or Tuesday for my job (and it's a contract position with the possibility of being hired on full time) and I have to complete the I9 form. I completed the first section and entered my information but for whatever reason the second section requires me to go to a center that's 70 miles away (one way) to verify my identity...

I just sent an email to the HR person to see what my options are. The problem is that I don't have a car, I'm getting a ride. I don't know if I can get a ride for a two hour trip, I don't have the money to simply rent a car.

Jeeze, I feel for the rest of you. Wish I could just throw myself as some sort of slave who will do anything for money.

Maybe not, but I am willing to be molded into whatever perfect employee the employer wants.

i'm here at my new job and i'm sitting doing nothing until the afternoon. ugh...just hate this feeling. they know a new employee is coming in yet no one didn't even prepare a schedule or set of tasks for me to do.

the lead called in sick. other employee who is supposed to train me said they're busy. way to make the new employee feel undervalued. i'm probably overreacting but come on. came in, an employee is sitting at my supposed desk, lead isn't here, trainer is busy. like wtf am i supposed to do? just sit here and surf the net?
