Applying for jobs is exhausting and soul-crushing

I followed up for an update on an editing test over a week ago because I haven't heard from the place since they sent me the test. Is trying to follow up again a big no-no? Or should I just move on?

They still have the position open on their site and I would assume that for someone to take the time and send me an editing test to consider me they would at least send a rejection e-mail, but again I heard nothing from them in 3 weeks.

If you interview or take a test, a potential employer should do you the courtesy of sending a rejection note. But this isn't always the case.

I'd send a note to the human resources representative restating your interest and asking about the status of your application.

First application in years, so much effort put into it, and got the rejection today.
In the form of a shitty cut n paste email... Cold as ice.. those fucking things do hurt indeed.
I cannot even start to imagine the pain when you don't have a current job to fall back on. :(

It's worse when you go for the interview and you took time out of your day and they dick you around with the time. And you have to re-schedule or you show up and the interviewer isn't there and you have to do it again. Go through all that and the interview went well and everything. THEN they send you a cut and paste email.

Biting your tongue is really hard to do in that situation.

i'm here at my new job and i'm sitting doing nothing until the afternoon. ugh...just hate this feeling. they know a new employee is coming in yet no one didn't even prepare a schedule or set of tasks for me to do.

the lead called in sick. other employee who is supposed to train me said they're busy. way to make the new employee feel undervalued. i'm probably overreacting but come on. came in, an employee is sitting at my supposed desk, lead isn't here, trainer is busy. like wtf am i supposed to do? just sit here and surf the net?

Maybe browse the intranet if they have one. Introduce yourself to others?

So if you go into an interview and they say you'll hear back from us in X amount of weeks, does anyone ever stick to that schedule?

Don't think I've had many interviews that have.

Welcome to DayGAF. You'll likely be relatively busy soon enough. Enjoy the calm times now.

hopefully. i've been in calm times for the past few weeks because project was dwindling. just got a new job and so far, nothing to do.

i browse our intranet everyday. yeah my co-workers came by yesterday. now i am temporarily on a different floor and i am literally browsing gaf all day today. basically it hinges upon my lead's return from the sickness. gosh. and it's only tuesday.

Just need to get this shit off my chest.

So I had a friend tell me he knew a guy who could get me a job at a retailer so I contact the guy and he tells me to come in and fill out the application and talk to the manager and everything would be straight. I do all that and they're ready for me to start filling out paperwork at that moment but they have a problem with my availability since I'll be in school during the fall. The manager tells me to think it over a few days and get back to her on Monday, I fix my availability and call back accepting the job.

The manager says she's gonna hand me off the assistant to complete everything, 2 days pass no word. It's wednesday now so I call and the assistant asks for my availability and says he'll get back to me as he has to speak to manager. 6 days later, today I call as my friend whose gf was going through the same thing starts working there this week.

So I call and I'm speaking to the assistant and he says that they'll keep my application on file. I ask him what the problem was as last time I was in the store they were ready for me to fill out paperwork he then asks for my availability again and I tell him. Then says the same thing, that they'll keep my application on file. I think they reason they don't want to hire me is cause I'm not available to work sundays. I hate the way these places operate, just fucking tell me that you're not interested in hiring me anymore /end rant

Usually, if you're the right person, you will get called back in a couple days. They might call you back in a week or so if the other choices don't take their offer.

It depends on the exact situation. For my most recent job I was told that they were still interviewing for the next week and I should expect to hear back by 2 weeks. I got the call a week later, seemingly after they finished interviewing all the candidates.

But yes, if they're interested, they'll be in touch sooner rather than later.

I had the opposite happen on my first day tho lol.

Is this for a shitty job or something you actually wanted to do? If it's something I wanted to do, I'd be mad as fuck.

Waiting for the call on a new job. Had a 3 hour interview with 7 people. A good friend of mine works there and gave me a great reference so I hope that takes me over the top. I absolutely hate my job now and it is sucking the life out of me and starting to affect my relationship.

So last week was the end of my job of almost 8 years. It's OK though! I knew it wasn't going to last. However I've been applying to jobs (in academia) and these applications and interviews and just waiting is the worst feeling ever. I've done over 10 now. Still no follow up.

No wonder so many people have given up on finding jobs.

I also hate that when applying for a job or interviewing for a job the exact same as the one I had for 8 years with glowing references, it's like I still have to jump through hoops to impress people. Why? When did we as a society become so apprehensive to risk?

10 months. I'm resorting to call in for warehouse jobs just to make ends meet.
Try telemarketing. Yeah, dealing with potentially rude people over the phone is annoying and kind of stressful, but it's otherwise easy decent money. That's what I'm doing atm for a home renovations company.....kind of helps when the hiring manager is in your age group (I'm 27; they can't be anything more than mid-30s).

Actually was kind of shocked I got it b/c I just replied to their ad out of random after moving some stuff around.

Granted, unless you've got prior experience I doubt most places will put you on full-time, but try and go for one that isn't solely commission-based. Just be charming and professional and you'll have a good shot I'm sure.

200 bucks extra a month helps.
Giving it a look right now :)

it's wednesday and i'm still a nomad. no one has talked to me about training, i had to go to my team manager to talk about what's been happening (which is nothing), manager gave me a task for another dept.

Is this for a shitty job or something you actually wanted to do? If it's something I wanted to do, I'd be mad as fuck.

safe to say i am doing it to not be unemployed. if i were only working for myself, i would've quit by now and studied something else. that's the thing. it like an admin job and even then no one even seems to give a crap about the new employee. i am left to my own devices. i had to look for a desk on my own (since someone is occupying my supposed desk), i had to ask the manager for tasks to do, no one even came to me to train me or show the ropes. i had just 1 one-hour training about the most basic of all stuff, but other than that, i haven't been doing anything since monday. my co-workers said hi to me on the first day, but since i'm literally on a different floor with nothing to do, i'm basically a nomad.

So things have been looking pretty good for me after a couple months of nothing. I accepted a position at a Medical Software company in IT and I am to start close to June. However, I also got a call today for an interview for a position at a University. Assuming everything goes well for the interview and I get an offer, I don't really know what I should choose. The medical company is small and there is room to grow but the University position would be more money and I would be doing a lot of what I did at the College job that I recently left. Anyone got any thoughts on my situation?

I don't think I posted a update after mentioning that I had an interview in NYC.

Well I got the job and am now in my first week. I love it so far.

Pay isn't amazing but I have the best benefits in the world.

Unexpectedly got an email today with a date for an interview for something I applied for a couple of weeks ago.

Wasn't really expecting to hear anything after this long.

Fingers crossed, I'll be asking for good resignation letter tips soon. Good lord I need to get out of this toxic environment! I'm not getting my hopes up though, as that ALWAYS leads to crushing disappointment.

Finally - signed, sealed and delivered, right as I go into the long weekend. The real deal, no more temporary contracts. I'm thrilled.

Thanks for everyone who offered up advice and a shoulder to cry on in this thread over the past year.

To everyone still struggling - there's a light at the end of this dismal tunnel. Chin up!

Start date keeps getting pushed back. Was supposed to be last Monday, then it was Tuesday or Wednesday, thought it was going to be next Monday but it looks like it's next Tuesday. What are they waiting for? They're waiting for my log in info to be created.

First time I've experienced that. Hope it's not a sign of things to come with the job.

I've been in this situation for awhile now and will probably start looking for a new job again since I finally graduated. Basically, all the engineers are out in the field working on projects while I'm in the office working on schematics and or browsing NeoGAF alone. On top of that I'm making less money then when I was working my sales job in retail. Granted this job is much less stressful, I feel like I'm wasting my degree here.

Now that I have my bachelor's degree I'm gonna redo my resume and actually make a cover letter to start looking for a better job. This job is paying the bills for now which takes a lot of pressure off my shoulders, thankfully.

Man I'm pissed off again. On last Thursday the managers took all the temp people and told us that we're leaving early for the day and had Friday off because orders were short. He said he knows it's not optimal, but it could be worse, at least we're still keeping you and then the next day I get a call from temp agency saying that I don't have the job anymore.

What type of engineer are you?

I have a family member that works for Pepco, I'd recommend trying them out. Shit, I could see if he could put in a word for ya. I know the struggle.

It's a tempting offer. I've tried to get my foot into the door with our local utility company (FPL) for internships since I wanted to get into power engineering with not much luck. Although judging from where Pepco operates, it would be a pretty far relocation from home. I'll consider my options.

So I went for an in person interview after a successful phone interview back on May 4th.

Was told then I would hear back from them either way and they would know something by the end of the week.

I e-mailed them last Friday, the Employment Manager told me she hadn't heard anything about the position yet, but would ask her boss (one of the people I interviewed with) when he got back Monday (today) and I've heard nothing since then.

I hate waiting on a reply.

Sad to say but if you have to wait it probably means you didn't get it. I've had this happen a few times, if they were hot on you they'd call back real fast. :(

Ugh. Been out of work for over a year now and just got my associate degree in computer networking but I live on the fucking Gulf Coast and am continually told there is jack shit around here in that field. I've been wanting to move back to Chicago ever since I left the military in 2012 but...ex wife and joint custody has me trapped here since she refuses to move back to Chicago. Seems I'll have to find a tech support or help desk position and work my way up to a network engineer job :(

I've been talking to a tech recruiter but most of the jobs they would be able to place me in are in Jackson, MS which is 3 hours away or New Orleans and none of that is feasible for me.

I had a job interview yesterday. I went in feeling good but the minute the hiring managers came in and sat down they seem the least bit interested. I thought the interview went well but now I don't expect a call back given their expression.

Had my first in-person interview today for a job I think would be perfect for me. I think it went well but I'm not really sure what to expect as it was hard to read my interviewers' reactions to what I was saying. Oh well, they said they would let me know within two weeks. So fingers-crossed as I continue to fill out other applications until I hear back!

I'm finding CL much more dependable than the bigger job boards, like Indeed and Monster.

Crazy how CL is still the best all these years. I've gotten all my jobs through their.

Still haven't heard back about that second round interview from almost a month ago. (This is federal employment: it's not entirely unreasonable, and I'll hear either way.) Have another first round interview this Friday, then another on Tuesday. Feels like things are finally shifting into place, but it'd be damn nice to know for sure.

Interview tomorrow! Its for a job slightly outside my wheelhouse but they seemed interested over the phone last week. I am confident that this will go well. Can't go worse than the last interview, where I was told I had the job only to get a call ten minutes later saying that the big boss had decided to outsource the role and told no one.

Wish me luck!

I have an interview tomorrow with the company I've been interning with. I really like being there and I love to have an opportunity to work there. Is there any tips to prepare for this particular situation?

Know the position requirements and some basic stuff about the company (which you already should). Dress the part and try to relax since you've already got a foot in the door.

Ok. I got a call from their HR department and they asked me if I wanted to schedule an interview. They did not name a position but I emailed the person who called me this morning for more information about the requirements. Is that ok?

So this job is asking me for a desired salary. I do know what the average salary is for this type of job in my area is so that should be a good place to start right? Especially coming right out of college?

Check out glassdoor.com. Enter the job title and your zip code and it should pull up some numbers for you.
