Applying for jobs is exhausting and soul-crushing

Sent a follow-up for a copy editor position last week, got a response and an edit test this week.

I'm assuming if I did well on the edit test I'll get called for an interview, yeah?

Don't sleep on sales jobs if you're decent at selling stuff to people, even if it's short term. Some of them only pay you when you make a sale but that's better than nothing until you find/want something stable and there's no ceiling which means if you're good you can make bank pretty quickly. Sales jobs usually have high as shit turnovers and low barrier to entry so they usually keep spots open.

Outside of that continue to tweak and work on your portfolio while you network; I can't stretch how far a great portfolio can get you. A strong portfolio can be really good to get around that 2yrs experience entry level BS if you can land an interview. While you don't have to, like Resumes I recommend having different portfolios and tailoring them towards the job you're applying for. When I started self-employment, this is what I did with my pitches to prospective clients.

To those having issues with networking, have you not utilized your school's alumni network? I have had really good experiences at both colleges that I went to, and had job offers through both of them.

Yeah, this is a really underutilized resource for networking, my college pushes our alumni network pretty hard and I know some peeps who landed some good jobs because of using it. I say use it alongside LinkedIn and attending your local fairs and you're covering a good amount of ground.

I am guessing you are in the design field? Which one?

I got a call back from a company like 20 minutes after I posted here, but I didn't hear the phone ring.

I called back, no response, left a voicemail.

Called later, no response.

Called today, no response.

Got in contact with a sales rep, had her transfer me to HR. No response, left a voicemail, no call back.

WTF!!!!!!

Maybe just leave an email to explain the situation and ask for next steps since you missed the call?

yea, I sent an email to the craigslist address that I sent the original email to. We'll see what happens.

I'll just assume that I'll never hear from them again in order to keep my sanity.

Not in the strict sense, I work in online marketing so for instance, my portfolio consisted of projects I've worked on. I actually rarely do design work besides the occasional passion project for some extra money. Having a portfolio isn't tied solely to design and programming fields, if you have any tangible work (paid or free) you can pretty much tie it into a portfolio. One of the folks in my network built his portfolio solely off of passion projects and non-profit work during his free time in between job searching, I can't remember exactly but I want to say he was in some type of skills management field.

I have an interview later for a job in a supermarket, I've been doing some googling and it seems these interviews are group sessions, a one to one then a demo of what the job entails.
I've had two group interviews before and I felt that they went terrible, I think due to nervousness, any tips on best way to 'survive' this and hopefully get a positive outcome, rather fed up of not having a job now.

And only one other person turned up so it all went ok, no silly balloon towers to be made lol, going back for an interview next Thursday.

i have an interview follow-up two freaking hours from now, i just got the outlook calendar invite an hour ago for a `15-minute meeting.

what should i doooo?? :(

Well, I just set myself up for a soul crushing.... Turned in an application internally for a job.It was pointed out by others at work telling me I would be great at the job, but the way the applications work here it is really hard to get through the paper selection part. Once through that I would feel much more confident.... On paper my work experience and education are just off the mark. All my experience comes from things I do in addition to my normal tasks and free time/volunteer work.
I did add that.. but I feel I have only a slim chance... At least I have a job, I cannot imagine to do this without anything to fall back on Just from the emotional investment on this application the rejection will be crushing :( ... Good luck to you all out there looking for work or career advancement opportunities..

Yeah I hear ya. I have no idea what kind of IT shop it is though. Some places are super super casual where as others are suit and tie affair. I'm going to go with a suit but I have the little doubt in the back of my mind that I'll be turning them off by being so formal.

The idea is you dress up for one day, even if the employees wear jeans or shorts.

Dressing nicely is an easy way to show you're serious about the application process.

I have an interview tomorrow for a job I probably won't get despite being qualified. It's pretty high level so those usually go to people who been with the company for many years as opposed to just 2ish like me.

Wompwompwomp. I work near the hiring manager and she knows a lot of people I know so at least I have that support system if she asks around. They'll all say amazing things. But yeah. Pretty sure I won't get it lol.

that's the thing we job seekers have to learn the hard way: accepting rejection. Time and time again.

Personally, I've gotten a little used to it but as the topic title says it ain't sunny here ;)

so i didn't get the job from the 2nd interview that i had

i got the job from the 3rd! i just got offered the position. i will be making $100 less (so $44900), plus 10% will be taken because of local authorities pension plan. so i will be making wayyyy less at face value.

still, i can pay off my remaining student loan now without worry. ughhh..

I actually got the position for next fall even though I thought I bombed the interview. I just need a summer job now and I'm good.

well my contract was nearing. i was apparently extended til end of may (my contract is supposed to end april 30th).

such a sigh of relief. i just got off the phone and i paid the remaining ~12k in my student loan (started monthly payments for my ~33k loan in jan last year).

it's only the beginning, though.

So this is a new one. I have an in person interview coming up on Wednesday after 3 phone interviews, but now they want to schedule a call with the VP of Engineering before I meet in person with some other people. I really don't know what to make of this at all. I don't think they'd cancel the interview if this call goes bad so what is the point?

Just finished a job interview for a position that is a significant upgrade from what I'm doing now. I felt that it went well, I was relaxed and answered the questions as best I could, everyone seemed to be comfortable and there were smiles and laughs.

However, if I can ask from the perspective of GAF:

- It was a panel interview, and I had difficulty remembering the names of all the interviewers. Would that make or break the interview? I shook their hands and thanked them at the conclusion, but didn't say their names as I forgot.

- They said that they still have to interview other applicants for the next 1 or 2 weeks, and I shouldn't expect to hear back until then. I'd assume that if I was successful, they would have moved me on to the next applicant stage already? Or is it normal for them to say they will call back later?

I had an interview two weeks ago for what I didn't realize at the time was my dream nursing job. The facility was extremely nice, the unit was great (ICU), the staff was extremely friendly/laid-back, and the pay was better than I could have ever expected to be offered right out of college. There were only eight people interviewing for the position, and it was my first interview in the nursing field. It was two on one, but I was pretty relaxed because the location of the job had me thinking I wasn't going to take it anyways. So I walked out of the interview confident and thinking I nailed it. We talked for over forty minutes, and after they took me on a tour of the hospital that lasted close to thirty minutes. I thought I was a shoe-in at that point, and I feel in love with the postion.

Well a day before my back-up interview, I recieve an email saying someone else was chosen for the position at my dream nursing job. So the next day I walked into my back-up interview desperate and my confidence shot. It was a panel interview, and I was pretty nervous. The interview lasted maybe five minutes, and I was out the door. This time I thought for sure that I wasn't going to get a position, and started applying elsewhere immediately. Well, I was just offered a position from that very same hospital, and on the unit I asked for! To make things better, my girlfriend was also offered a position at that hospital!

In the end, things worked out for the best. I don't have to move, but my girlfriend and I are working at the same hospital, and the pay is comparable to my dream nursing job. Stay positive job seeking GAF, and keep applying away!

Shit. I got called up for a phone interview out of the blue. I was totally unprepared and pretty sure I exuded a complete lack of confidence, even over the phone.

And even if I do make it to the in-person interview, I still haven't figured out the problem of how to answer shit like "describe a time you worked with a team to overcome adversity." See, when employers ask questions about previous experience, I pretty much can't answer most of them because my entire professional life has been pretty solitary and relatively uneventful. Even my experience with groups in school were so uneventful I can barely remember them.

I have a sinking feeling I'm going to be outclassed by 50-year-old dudes who've already been doing this job for 30 years. Yeah I threw in my resume knowing I had no direct experience with this kind of job (I have experience in the field but not this exact position), but it was one of those things where you just try to apply for the hell of it.

My only silver lining here is that this experience might have convinced me to be a bit more prolific about tossing my resume (and cover letters) out to more of these kinds of positions. Originally I thought my resume would get thrown in the trash at these kinds of jobs but now I find out some of them will at least call me back.

Yesterday i got an e-mail post interview saying that Uniqlo was not going to progress with my application, it hurt, as i really wanted yo work there with solid pay, but hey it happens.

I just dont like feeling stuck, and i feel stuck at where i am now making low pay, its a bit insulting, even for someone in the middle of trying to build their resume. All my friends are making more than me so that doesnt help.

All i can do is keep looking

I was doing job hunting after I came back from a 3 weeks vacation. I was originally want to move on to other field from freight forwarding due to this field is not really my field even though I am already on middle management lvl.

But once I put my resume to various medium. All the job coming to me is nothing but the same field. Is it really this hard to find a job at another field?

Or is it just hard for Asian penetrate to so call "western company"?

But after a month of job hunting, a recruiter got me a job at a much bigger company in the same field with a huge salary increase. I should be happy but I still want to try something else.

How long should it typically take to hear back from a place after I sent back a copy edit test they sent for me to finish and turn back in within 24 hours?

Had an interview earlier this week and they called back to offer me a position but the pay is way too low and the hours are at some weird times. It sucks because the position was exactly what i was looking for. I will most likely call back Monday to renegotiate.

I'm wondering what the best way to pose a counter offer would be? And if it matters if its done by phone or email? I already have another offer that I accepted just in case I cant find anything else.

Hey guys... What's the best way to follow-up a job application? (Unless, the hiring managers state that they don't want you to call them).

If you don't already, get emails during the interview or exchange business cards.

Asking about follow-up should be part of your questions too if you wanted to know what they want you to do.

In the past I tried to call them back like a week later, if they don't call you themself it's probably bad news. So many times they didn't even know who the fuck I was and I could tell.

In regards to interviews... perhaps I'm over-thinking it, but how would you answer this scenario question?

You're an employee working in the service counter for a business, and a customer checks in with a hold or a reservation. However, there is a glitch with the system or something is wrong with the room/item. The customer has arrived and is demanding a solution, how would you resolve this situation?

What I would do is to is to explain the situation to the customer, hear their concerns, and try to make alternate arrangements or refer them to a nearby business. I hope that is the ideal response?

So. I had a phone interview on April 17th for a position. Today I got a call back for a second interview.

The phone interview was with the hiring committee, basically everyone in the decision making process for the library I interviewed at.

This second interview is with the VP of Academic Affairs and the VP of Internal Relations. I am only competing against one other candidate here.

I am excited, and looking forward to the prospect of this position. It is basically what I do now, but in a smaller department, better work hours and it has potential for better pay.

That is actually the only thing that worries me. The pay scale starts at $21k and goes up to $30. I'm thinking with my qualifications being higher, and this being identified as a Library Assistant III and not a LAI or LAII it should be on the higher end of that scale. What do you guys think?

I'm looking forward to this one. It's in Florence, SC. I'm excited about the prospects of that area. Near the beach, near a few major cities and even not far from Charlotte, NC.

Congrats on the new position.

So, Indeed is legit? I always see jobs on there that I don't see elsewhere which makes me wonder if they're fake or old postings.

I have a job offer for august but I'm not 100% excited about it. I had a third interview for another position in NYC. How good are employers poker faces? I feel I did good but they don't concede any hints.

anybody ever hire? do you give hints?

Any thoughts on whether I should suggest a phone interview for the first stage if I get a call back and it's not offered/suggested by the company? I started full time at my job vs. part time, but they've recently toughened up on allowing people days off on fairly short notice and want notice at least a week in advance, which makes it harder to go to in-person interviews.
Guess it couldn't hurt to try but I wonder if it'd potentially hurt my chances of getting a job I really want.

I'm not sure what their submission process is like, but they do occasionally have some month+ old stuff on there posted recently. For the most part they're legit though, it's just worth doing a little legwork to see if the position is still recent/open.

Personally I would never suggest that.If it comes from them, fine but otherwise you should always try to accommodate their processes.
If you need more time just say 'I cannot make Wednesday on such short notice, but next week would be fine.' They cannot expect you to be able to make any time frame they suggest.

I hate phone interviews anyway and would avoid them like the plague, so much communication is done non verbally.

Just had a phone interview that lasted 20 minutes. It was my first phone interview and it was tough. I was stumbling on some words to prevent an awkward silence while I thought of a good answer. It did end will and a face-to-face interview will be scheduled soon.

I was laid off right after my paternity leave was up. I have been laid off for two months now, and baby mama is already berating me for not having a job. I have about fifty resumes out there already. I am exhausted and my soul is crushed. Seemed like this is a good thread to post in.

Thanks for the advice! Most of the time when the scheduler is like "THIS DAY OR THIS DAY CHOOSE" so I get nervous to suggest they delay it a week, but I guess that's better than asking them to go out of their way with another form of interview entirely.

I applied for a position a few days ago, and a recruiter got back to me today and scheduled a "15-20 minute" phone call for tomorrow afternoon. She said she wants to talk about my experience, which is straight forward enough. Any curve balls I should be expecting or maybe not aware of?

Also my contract at my place of employment ends in July and will not be being renewed. Am I being "fired"? Can I just talk about how I am making a career change instead of saying I'm out of a job and need a new one? If I'm in the position to have a new job lined up before my contract is out it changes how I feel about whether or not I'm being fired, haha.

So guys, I finally have an interview tomorrow. The recruiter said it'll be an hour and I'll have a writing and excel test to complete as well. Anyone have any experience with this?

Not fired for certain. Why is it temporary? Are you filling in for someone? Are someone coming back? Who will take your place? Is there going to be a new recruiting process? Are they not satisfied with what you have delivered? You better go ask someone to get your answer.

I was "fired" exactly the way you described. There was one false & influential woman who talked with the boss behind my back and she didn't think I was cut for the job, that I was young and unexperienced and so on. So my temporary contract wasn't renewed.

I was pretty down at first. But made a quick comeback in the same field. Moved away and started anew from zero, motivated as hell. Got another temp.position in another city and after that, my work have been has been praised by multiple people. That temporary place on the new place is permanent now, by the way. ;)

Sometimes I think about that woman that back-talked me to my boss. Glad not to be around her anymore...

Hey, I contacted a software company with flyers at my school about hiring people for full or part time positions, the person was nice and got back to me quickly. Although he got back to me way to quickly. I sent him a followup e-mail with a copy of my resume and I got a reply within 5 minutes. Should I be suspicious? I sent him a paragraph message and my resume, while short, should probably have been looked at closer. They asked I come by next week, is it possible this is a scam, or do some employers reply that quickly.

The company is called SBI software in Portland, OR, im just not sure if this is some kind of scam. It just doesn't seem right that I would get replies so quickly because I don't think my resume is that strong (I am a student with no job experience)

In the post I made above, the recruiter who contacted me about the job did so the morning after I had submitted my application and resume. We shot emails back and forth for about 10 minutes and I had a phone interview set up. I think it depends on the recruiter or hiring personnel at that company.

Another no...for a position I'm only slightly overqualified for, and for which many internal candidates were probably promoted to over me. Just like all the others, I'm sure my LinkedIn search in a few weeks will reveal that an internal won out.

This process is starting to vex me. I'm very grateful that I have a short contract now, but this search for something stable, full-time, and legitimate is going on for just about 10 months now. God damn.

On the plus side, had an extremely promising senior-level interview yesterday, with a round 2 practically already scheduled for mid/late-May. Maybe I just had to stop going for all these slightly more junior positions and aim higher. I'm just in this awkward place where I have too much experience for entry/junior, and too little for management...

Industry is Comm/PR/related-fields, btw.
