Why the fuck do they do that shit? I mean, honestly, is it just a way to justify a bloated HR department, or some kind of hedged bet if their pre-approved candidate vanishes? I get it that it's a buyers market out there and and they can always just sit on their hands and wait for 97% of a loaf, but why waste people's time? .

In all honestly, yes, kind of. I work for a big corporate America kind of place, and over half the time when HR posts a job opening they already have who they want to hire in mind. They are simply posting the opening to "make it look good" for all intents and purposes. They even post the jobs online so people outside the company can apply for it.

I think it's both silly and disrespectful, and I've heard many people complain about it internally, but it's the company's policy with respect to job openings and we all have to follow the policy.

What's wrong with that? There are many success stories of people teaching in China and then using that as a platform for better things.

For instance, I know someone who taught in China, used the opportunity to learn/improve Chinese, went to a top 5 law school, and is now in a top 5 wall street law firm.

Then there are people like Peter Hessler, and lots of people who go to work for Chinese companies or start their own companies in China.

I've actually met Peter, we share the same alma mater. His background is astronomically different than "dude can't find job in retail, go to Asia to teach English." But if anyone here has aspirations to further themselves that much over there, sure, go for it.

Don't have the degrees, certificates or connections to get my foot in a door. 27 and hopeless now.

Phone interview went well. Too well. Problem is, it's like my old job, the one that ended my contract so cruelly. Right down to being upfront with the high amount of office politics.

I know I wouldn't be happy there. It's already set up to be just a miserable, shitty place like before. But the smaller businesses I want to work at are far more flippant.

That's the trade-off, I guess - either you get a structured callback at a job you'll hate, or you hope and pray this awesome place will take you.

Don't use the world hopeless, you're 27 which is a baby in adult years. You still got a 35+ year career ahead of you.

Have you looked at UPS, FedEx, civil servant jobs, police/firefighter, trades (plumbing, carpenter) etc.? I've been in the retail rut before. Graduated with a History degree (LOL) in 2009, had to spend a year working at fucking Rite Aid then became a legal assistant at a dead end place that capped me at $15 an hour. After 3 years it led me back to school and now I'm almost done with Law School.

I had my technical test for Cirtix last week. Fuckin lol. For one thing, they left you alone to do it, so you could pretty much google any answer you didnt know. But i knew a fair amount of it so didnt feel too bad about having to google the odd bit of stuff that id forgotten.
But then the fucks busted out a bunch of logic questions. I straight up despise these things. You know the type, "4 people need to cross a bridge at night. The bridge can only hold 2 people and only 1 can carry the torch. person a crosses in 1 minute, b in 4 minutes, c in 7 mins and d in 8 minutes. Can they make it across in 17 minutes?" kinda shit. I have always been bad at these ever since i was a kid. I suddenly had flashbacks to being a schoolkid stuck at my kitchen table for hours because i couldnt finish my math homework and just got so fucking pissed off because i couldnt get one of these damn logic puzzles. I told the recruitment guy that in 10 years of IT work id never had to help anyone cross any bridges at midnight but if they need IT staff to let me know. But i wont be hearing from them, no doubt. The look on the guys face when i told him i couldnt get any of the questions right was priceless.

Really? I usually see people say to don't use PDF because many companies upload resumes into an online database, and those databases generally cannot read PDF files.

I'm 22 and I only have an "electrician" degree.

Graduated at 18, did a bunch of different stuff but never really found a place I can stay. Last year, december 2013, I thought I had finally found the perfect job. I was accepted as a process engineer at a chemical company. Pay was veeeeeeery good, like twice the amount of a normal job.

Unfortunately, I had to quit because of medical reasons... I couldn't stand the chemical stuff and it was a very dangerous environment. Sucks because I liked everything else.

Not sure what to do now. I have a degree to work as an electrician, but to be honest... I hardly have any experience and I forgot most of the stuff through the years. Feels like a worthless degree now as I don't want to work in that field anymore.

Currently working on an application for the National Railway Company of my country. The job itself is helping out passengers with their questions, doing some general work at the train station and some other stuff. Really hope I get this job, because this is something I would enjoy doing. Pay is also great and there are a lot of career options.

If I don't get this, I'm not sure what to do though. This job offers a 5 month internal training and the only requirement is a basic degree, which I have. It's pretty much one of my best options considering the work you'll do, they pay you get and the advancement options.

I'm just afraid I won't get it and won't know what to do next

Same as richi, I have absolutely never had a problem with a PDF resume. The only place I use a different resume is on the USAjobs website, where I use their resume builder as the default because most jobs ask for it, and then I also submit a PDF when asked if I want to upload any extra documents for a particular job.

I think its time to try and end my scrounging and get a Job like every damm person; but I am having trouble knowing what field I should apply to. I think I suffer from depression because I make a meal of things in my head and close doors for myself; I have moments of clarity when I need to condemm most if not all my actions. The penalty from my assesment of my choices is death; but after waiting on myself to proceed for so long I think I am resigned to let it happen on its own, it'll be soon enough anyway with the way I carry myself.

Meanwhile, I need to be less of a burden on my family and at least pay for my own food housing and electricity. I have a marijuana habit which I think kills my jobsearch confidence more than anything. ALL my "friends" smoke and still manage to get solid work. I always believe all It'd take for me to be well off is keeping myself physically fit and get a "green star" from a psychiatric office. I went through hell in a highly ranked and academically crushing school far far away where I did not belong on a minority scholarship and I wasn't near good enough to be there; I graduated(barely), but believe I am still having what I can only call "PTSD."

Now on to the important stuff; I need a job, preferably from a place that does not drug test. My mindset was to try and stop smoking, but I never managed to pull that off, I simply let it make me too happy and I have very very little that do that. I become clingy and desparate when I stop as I cannot support loneliness, and bother people I should could only bother 5 years ago. I dont trust myself to remain sober and believe the only way to fight my addictions to weed and excedrin is through a substance abuse program at a proper clinic or hospital. I put a lot of effort into it and have trouble finding people who take me seriously at the hospital's end. After college; my face started changing color; dermatologist and Biopsy did not reveal anything; I think its down to stress; but common lore has it I tried to bleach my face, which hurts because I am as proud and happy to be black man as anything. I refused to appear in public or hang with friends until it was taken care of, but learned there is no cure, so I have to get myself out there anyway. I need to use make up if I am going out.

I do some IT consultancy with one of my mates and could probably find jobs in the field, but I have no proper IT skill besides having worked as a media tutor; going to get a certification or more school is a problem because the one I currently have(B.A. in French) would get me a job if it wasn't for me not being able to carry myself, that window may have passed. My job prospects are the "Workforce1" service in NY. I got a job translating french from them once and hoping for second time lucky. Is anyone else using workforce one or some kind of state unemployment scheme? What is the word on those. I have tons of contacts on linkdin; some of my friends are recruiters there and have sent me job offers, but too much garbage in my head; it is like PTSD, memories of that school are painful; I was always lost, always high, likely a Mr bean figure shuffling around stinking the place. I am not too scared to face people, just scared to face myself as I required better from me especially when I have made no improvements since. I did need to do better as I lost love and respect from all friends and family as a consequence.

Then I only have Indeed and Craigslist. I would also recomend teaching in china. I know at least 5 people who have done it and they seemed to all have benefited from it; considering it myself, but in my low fucked up state I am still sadly the head of my family and making every decision; almost all the money coming to the house goes through my hands even if I don't make any. I am making them extremely unhappy; my ability to entertain them is fading and I cannot bear the toughts of my parents and siblings slowly dying inside because of me. The only way to make them happy is to start working.

As far as I know, IT courses are usually OUTSIDE of colleges and university at least here in NY; but the one I know the most about has 9 to 5 intensive 18 week classes(For Free) Its called "PerScholas" It workforce development. So not good; but I think what you are looking for definitely exists.

It's been like a month since my last interview, and since the last week I had two interviews. One for a tester position and another for a BI(business intelligence) job. I had the technical interview for the BI one yesterday and maan, I get really nervous in those interviews. Doesn't help the fact that it seems like they wanted a guy with full experience(starting with desing of cubes, calculating costs of proyects and all that) and I don't have all that.

And on the other job, I have zero tester experience but it seems like a bottom of the ladder job, and I would like to change my area so this could be a good chance, I have a face-to-face interview tomorrow, let's hope this goes well. I have a good record of face-to-face interviews, so let's hope I don't freeze at the technical part(or better, let's hope there are no technical part )

It's a good point. My dad was a carpenter all his life and since retiring a few years ago he's gotten 2 knee replacements and a carpal tunnel surgery. It does beat the shit out of you, but the pay is decent. School is the best option if you don't want to sacrifice your body, definitley look into it.

There are tons of places hiring retail temp help for the winter. Many of them keep on the people they like into the new year.

While in school (HS, uni, and during my postgrad) I worked part time at EB Games or Starbucks. Both were fantastic part time jobs with fun benefits. Go to the stores you love or regularly buy from, make friends with staff there (esp. the manager/asst mgr wherever possible) enough that they recognize you, and you'll be a shoo-in for part time work when it comes up.

Yeah, it wasn't a case interview, it was more like: "have you used X tool, or been in a project since the begining" sort of question, and sadly I don't have experience in that part of a project because I've never been in those parts.

Also, the funny thing is that I tried to enter the BI area for like almost all of my carrer with awful luck, so this year I finally said fuck this and decided that I don't want to enter BI. But out of the blue this company called me saying they saw my CV and wanted to do an interview and all that and since I don't have a job I wasn't going to tell them that I don't do BI anymore. Still, let's see if they call me again, It wasn't thaaaaat bad an interview, but it shows that I don't have enough BI experience

Well, I'm pretty pissed off this afternoon. I've been in training for the last two weeks and today they revealed to me, for the first time, that the training pay would be minimum wage. Here in the state of SC that pay is $7.25/hr. Yes, you read that right. They didn't mention that to me at any point during the three different interviews I had with them, they didn't mention it to me during orientation, and they certainly didn't mention it until today at any point during the last two weeks of training. So the check I get next Friday is going to be WAY less than what I was expecting.

Then to top that off, after finding that out, they told me I'd be working third shift this coming Sunday night after telling me it was an exclusively first shit job (as I told them it had to be for my situation) and that work on 2nd or 3rd would only happen a handful of times during a year, and even then it would only be going in for an hour or two during those shifts to help train people or help catch them up when needed.

My first official day of normal work will be this Friday. The very first thing I'll be doing that morning will be asking the lady who will be training me to do what she does to clarify the 3rd shift thing. I have a horrible feeling that she has decided, without letting me know, that she now wants to work 1st shift and wants to push her 2nd and 3rd shift duties over to me. If that is the case I'll instantly either quit or put in my two weeks notice and move on to that retail management job I mentioned earlier. I really don't want to do that, I am very much looking forward to working with the disabled, but I'm not going to be screwed over like this.

I'll update when I know more. For now though, I'm pretty ticked off.
