Applying for jobs is exhausting and soul-crushing

Ranting time!

So I'm looking for social media work ,but nearly every job I've applied to has some sort of glaring stipulation. For example, I had all of the qualifications to one position except I'm not proficient in Final Cut or Premiere. In another, it was a lack of godlike experience in Photoshop (I get by, but I'm no senior-level expert).

I almost want to say "fuck it" and apply anyway. Maybe they don't need someone who's perfect, or maybe I can learn on the fly, because these things are literally the only blockage stopping me when it comes to the requirements listed.

What really gets my goat is the fact that it's completely unreasonable for a mid-level employee to be well-versed in writing, digital marketing/social media, AND a long list of programs. It's like trying to squeeze every last drop of talent from one person.

I've seen the same job get posted on all the main places for this very reason - too many requirements.

/rant over

You should apply anyway. Ignore the mumbo jumbo specific qualifications that some of these job postings have. They are usually ridiculously high. Just go in and do your best to impress them with your skill set.

I've been looking for a remote developer position and have applied for close to 50 jobs over the last few weeks. I'll apply for a job, and within 15 minutes will get a call. But even though their listing came up when I searched for telecommute or remote, they still want me to move to Kansas, Seattle, or some other place. I could have had 10 job offers if people were more willing to work with remote developers. I'm just about ready to give up and switch careers.

If anyone is looking for, or knows anyone looking for remote ColdFusion developers, please send me a PM.

Thanks

Thanks!

I just did the drug test yesterday. Easily passed considering I have never done any drugs lol. I think the 1-3 month background check thing is underway as well. I really hope its more like one month. I really don't want to have to job hunt for a short temporary position somewhere. I can't really complain though. I feel so lucky to finally have a full time job with benefits. I will be making enough to start paying my school loans back and I should be able to move up to a better paying position in the company with some hard work.

Edit: I think my college pamphlet really helped me. It is basically a how to land a job guide. I followed the interview advice as well as I could. I dressed up nice. I smiled a lot and maintained good eye contact. I didn't read stuff online on my phone while waiting for the interviewer (I didn't even know this was an important rule until I read the pamphlet). I pretty much just followed every tip it had.

Welp I have an update to my story. OPM canceled their contract with the company who hired me. I was pretty sad after that happened. I thought I was done job hunting for awhile. Anyways a new company is taking over. So they emailed me to see if I was still interested in the position. I emailed back yes. I said more than that, but it was basically a yes. So four days pass and I hear nothing. I call the HR person and they said they are glad I called and that they will be starting my 3-4 month background investigation soon. So I still get the job. The ridiculously long wait for this investigation got extended though. So now i'm stuck looking for a temporary job to do while I wait for my investigation to end.

I'm back to job hunting every day. I finally found a job that pays $9.00 an hour close to home. The staffing agency told me they would tell me my start date last Monday. It is now Friday. I called them twice so far. They can't tell me my start date until the company sends them something. So I have no idea if I still have this job lined up or not. Its so frustrating.

Oh man, got an inteview lined up for a job on tuesday. Would be perfect as it would be 25-30 hours per week but paying almost as much as my old job where i worked 38,5 hours. Finally something to look forward to.

What are you applying to that takes 3-4 months for a background check?

Good news on my part - I got a call for a marketing position at another hospital. They called me for once, and that's usually a good sign. No requiters in the way either, plus it's close as hell to my apartment. Fingers crossed!

I hate my job

I work in food industry

started a new job just a month back

maybe it's me but some of the managers are passive aggressive acting assholes that all can't decide on how to teach shit to new employees. I think I overheard them attempting to talk "in code" over firing me, but I'm not sure. debating on even going in tomorrow.

anyways I'm going to look for a new job at a new place because life is too short to put up with this shit

I'm acquaintances with an owner for a trendy deli/bar so I'm going to try my luck there. people seem happy working there. wish me luck.

There are so many companies that have reached out to me that are literally door-to-door sales selling Verizon Fios packages. To be exact, 22 companies now. All the same thing. All run the exact same. A three process interview. The first is 15 min. just to see what you physically look like. As long as you're normal looking and relatively young they bring you back for a second interview which involves you shadowing another employee for a day which consist of you driving 45 min. away to an area where you knock on doors. 100% commission position. And they don't explain any of this in the job ad, or in the initial interview. So disgusting.

I have obviously learned my lesson after the first one, but it is just unfortunate to get calls that gets your hopes up when it is bull shit. Once they mention Verizon, and a quick 15 min. "get to know you" it is all lies. The best part is how they call the position an account manager for fortune 500 companies. LOL

For people who apply for a lot of jobs online, make sure you include keywords in your resume and cover letter from the job ad you are applying for. A lot of companies use software that scans your resume and looks for certain keywords. If your resume doesn't include these keywords it will be immediately discarded by the software.

You should adjust your resume and cover letter to suit the job you are applying for.

I applied for a job as a (film/tv) editor at a corporate video production company that is based in my home town. However, this is the same company that employed a girl who was on the same course as me, and that I had some disagreements with (or rather with her friends) a couple of years ago. So basically someone I dislike took a job from under my nose in my home town.

I sent out my application with the caveat that if there is some issue resulting from the above then they should dismiss my application. I'd rather choose putting it out there immediately (and risk not getting the job) over getting the job and reliving prior grievances.

My "contract ended" at my older job, and looking back, thank god it did. It was a shitty place with shitty managers, and I wasn't happy. Go for the deli job.

Scam companies are far too common. Whether it's door2door or those awful insurance places, it's all shit and a waste of time.

I actually let most calls go right to the voicemail so I hear what company they work for and decide not to call them back. Problem is, my system might have screwed me out of the hospital job.

See, I didn't pick up immediately, and after I heard the message a few minutes later, I called back. No response came, so I dropped a message and waited. A half an hour later, still nothing. The day ended without a callback, so I spent the weekend partly confidant but mostly worried.

This morning, I tried calling again. No answer. I'm afraid to leave another voicemail. I'm afraid they've already moved on, and I don't want to bug them, but I'd really like to land this position. It's probably the constant stream of "we've decided to move forward with another candidate" lines I've been hearing lately, but it's hard not to worry.

The hospital didn't leave contact instructions and methods in the voicemail they left?

Regaining spirit and momentum after two back-to-back post-interview rejections. Just keep sending out that resume and drafting cover letters. The anticipation-letdown cycle is definitely soul-killing, but what else can you do.

If you apply, and don't get a confirmation email your resume etc... was recieved, how long should you wait until trying a follow up? Should you try to follow up through email? and if that doesn't work then try calling?

Yes, that sounds like a good plan. For most office jobs I would wait 3-4 wks before following up.

i feel miserable at my job, the first thing that comes to mind when i wake up is "another day in that place", ive been saving money for the past year to have enough to support myself for at least 5 months or so while i look for something else because working there i don't even have time for that, work is an hour away from where i live and many times i just get home and go straight to bed

When do places normally start interviews and such for Christmas jobs? I handed my CV to a few places advertising them at the start of September but haven't heard anything since.

Just got a phone call about a job I had completely forgotten I applied to lol. It ended up being a preliminary HR screening, she said I would hear from them later this week to let me know if I get an interview.

Fingers way crossed!!

Thanks man, really appreciate it.

Got another call from the same guy today, that the interview will be in a café. Gonna wear the same as i would have in their office. Black shirt, dark blue jeans and some nice shoes. Gonna order a coke if he offers, don´t like coffee. Btw it´s IT-Support on site. Barely at the service desk on the phone. Which is great, love actually doing stuff, like assembling PCs, changing parts, running around the building, instead of telling people to reboot their pc :)

But i´m getting kinda nervous right now.

Also good luck to everyone else, job searching really is horrible.

5 rejections so far in the past 7 days. Just gotta keep at it!

I'm on ten.

Analyze what you think might have gone wrong. For example, I shortened my resume because my main recruiter told me to do so, but ever since that happen, my responded rate has dropped dramatically. So starting tomorrow, I'll use my best judgment and use either the long version or short version depending on the company.

Little things like that go a long way.

I started the training class for my state job today.

I got home and a guy from a local retail establishment called me wanting to hire me within the month to manage his store. It pays more...but it's not a state job with the benefits that goes along with that.

I swear to God, every single time I look for a job I'll hear nothing for months then when I FINALLY find something I start getting multiple offers from every which direction. It ticks me off.

I'd love to get 5 rejections in 7 days, as weird as it sounds. At least then I'd know that people are actually reading my shit and telling me I don't have the job. The last two months have been total silence for me, only one rejection, zero offers, and a hell of a lot more than 1 application going out.

Just wanted to say that I'm willing to review any resumes if someone wants to PM me theirs. I'm not incredibly experienced, but I have learned a lot about resume design and now unofficially help my company with recruiting (will officially help next year), and my professors and employer have had nothing but good things to say about the content and design of my resume. I've spent a lot of time with career counselors, friends in different industries, technical writing professors and faculty to help me learn some resume tips and skills.

An inadequate resume in terms of design and content can be keeping you from getting that job you're qualified for, and you might not even know it. Always be sure to get feedback on your resume before applying to the company you want!

I'm a Graphic Designer currently looking for work in So Cal. I gotta say, one of the most annoying things for me, is having to fill those archaic database job applications that want you to fill in your skills, education, experience and responsibilities every single time, line by line. Here I have this nice looking resume to show I do this for a living and blegh. One of the times I wish an HR department would make an exception and just let their creative managers just get some PDFs instead.

Well good news, after 8 weeks of being unemployed I got the job that I wanted. Start Monday.

I wish you all luck and rememebr no matter how bad or desperate things get, keep the faith.

It's a numbers game, I must have gone on 7-8 interviews and I walked out of all of them thinking I nailed it. I guess I didn't because none of them hired me. I kept grinding and applying in mass numbers. I not only got a job, I got a good job with a good company.

I learned a lot these last several months, don't chase money, chase good companies. Work enviornment is more important than any amount of money.

Love you all

After 6+ months of searching, over 200 job applications submitted, 10 interviews and 6 meetings with recruiters, I've finally landed employment as a Product Consultant for a tech firm doing work I feel comfortable doing and making decent money for once in my 25 years.

Keep this thread warm for me when I'm looking for employment at the end of next year when I'll probably be moving.

I started the training class for my state job today.

Basically the same thing happened to me. As soon as I accepted one offer another one popped up. Too bad I didn't get a chance to consider the benefits of either, but I'm pretty happy with the one I landed for myself

It is very frustrating alright.

I've moved to London because I couldn't find a job in my area back home, for a whole year... spent the last week doing a PDF portfolio because my online portfolio wouldn't do, and the first, second and third responses I've got were "nope". Faster responses are always no, but I was disheartened nonetheless.

Including the guy/agency that initially asked me for a PDF portfolio just so he could show it to the client.

I'm frustrated, but this is only the beginning, I know that much.

Depends on location.

People never answered back unless you had a job interview back where I'm from, here (UK) roughly half of them seem to respond.

Nevertheless the fact they take their time might not be bad news, quite the opposite. Faster responses will always be no. Meaning you can't avoid massive frustration.

Updatetime

Interview went pretty well, stumbled a little with a troubleshooting scenario but nailed the other two. Gonna call me early next week.

Also got an e-mail from another company, that i should call them tomorrow to set up an interview.

Things are finally looking up for milhouse.

Oh SHIT yes, finally have an interview through my university with a reputable tech company.

Feel like I'm getting in to some sort of rhythm with applications now. Must be up to about 10 since I started properly a couple of weeks ago. No replies yet.

Ehhh it all depends on your field, but before I found this new job, I was setting myself a personal goal of 3 tailor-made applications per day.

Still took me 5 months, nearly 6 >_>

I love this shit. A company I'd really like to work for has a new job posted on their site but the site won't let me apply. I applied for another position back in April and while the new one is similar it has a different title. When I go to submit my application it says I've already applied. It's an automated system and there is no generic jobs or hr email address for me to contact. I've tried to find a friend of a friend type connection but nothing so far.

Yeah, most of those 10 were in the past few days. I'm finishing university part time as well so I've got other stuff to be getting on with.
