April 2013 NPD Sales Results [Up3: Xbox 360 Top Platform, NSMBU LTD, Lego 3DS, Luigi]

Probably. Wii U is still waiting for its Uncharted though.

WiiU has its NSMBU and ZombiU. 2 decent games. It also got Monster Hunter.

Things are bad now but I expect next year around the same period that the hardware sales will be significantly higher for the wiiU given Mario kart, 3D mario, and hype of bayonetta 2, zelda, etc will be rolling.

I'm more concerned of the Vita's long term future given the lack of forward software support hasn't been announced yet.

If anyone needs a relaunch its the Vita.

My greatest fear is Sony is going to relegate the Vita to be a PS4 remote play device and slowly wind down Vita development. I'll be pissed if that happens because I bought Vita for the Vita games and the unique experience it has.

IT'S FINE! WE'VE GOT PIKMIN 3 AND A DISNEY GAME I DON'T REMEMBER THE NAME OF COMING OUT IN THE NEXT 6 MONTHS! SALES WILL SKY ROCKET!
Disney's Planes will save the Wii U!

I think it was incredibly shortsighted (arrogant?) for Nintendo to release a system that can basically produce current-gen visuals when there's been fatigue shown with the current hardware for a while now.

Pikmin could either do very well because it's the first major game since launch or bomb hard.

Game & Wario is the first major game! Damnit!

*cries*

I hope Pikmin sells. Awesome trailer in the ND that goes viral and it manages 2M WW?

I am aware of my delusion. Let me enjoy them

Is it bad that I want to see both the Wii and Vita discontinued so I can buy them both as curiosities?

I do hope Sony and Nintendo rebound, but practically given away consoles feel so good.

I want to see Vita discontinued so Sony stops wasting time and money on handhelds. Whether they want to or not, stores will stop carrying it soon enough.

Wii U being discontinued would suck since Nintendo would probably go handheld exclusive. I hope it at least pulls gamecube numbers so we can get some decent games this gen, and not just a sea of scripted bro shooters.

My god, I hope this fucking system doesn't fucking suicide bomb the Pikmin franchise forever. I am seriously concerned :(

I fear so, so many impending Pikmin ghosts... purple and red and blue oh nooo

Don't worry. There's still a chance that they release something like Mario's Space Trip. Mario crashes with his space ship on some planet. The player needs to collect the different parts of his space ship in the game and uses a bunch of small Toads to carry them and to fight against Goombas and Koopas.

Also possible: Wii Strategy, where you play as your Mii.

Let's not pretend like the general western market cares about anything on Vita outside of Call of Duty and Assassin's Creed and even then a significant portion of the sales came from bundles/

Uncharted sells well in the west.

An uncharted bundle with a memory card, headphones and soft case at $199 would pick sales up considerably.

That's assuming that Sony even wants the system to survive the next 6 months.

Expect pricedrops all around in June (save Wii U I suspect :/ )

Also, Wii U will certainly have its worst month between now and September, probably May or July. Nintendo must think they can keep the console in near death for half a year to try and save it in the second half...if they can't pull it back by the end of the fiscal year, bye Iwata and bye Wii U by 2015.

On a side note, NSMBU had 700k+ sales in US? That's like 70-80% attach rate. If anything, it proves that NSMB is a seller but not a SYSTEM seller. People bought NSMBU because they had a Wii U, but Nintendo kinda wanted the opposite (people to buy Wii U for NSMBU). They better have been in panic mode since March if we're going to see anything before it goes completely dead. Nintendo's Q1 is going to be BAD for Wii U everywhere.

Not sure if final numbers are in. Here's my shot in the dark.

Xbox 360 = 130K
PS3 = 102K
Wii U = 38K
3DS = 100K
NDS = 60K
Wii = 42K
PSV = 15K
PS2 + PSP = 7K

This gives you 494K (about 38% down from March 2013) and an estimated $108mm (compared with $109.5mm reported by NPD) in hardware revenue using the last known hardware average prices.

I put the Wii U higher, because I thought lower ASPs on the other platforms would make the hardware revenue figure difficult to achieve without pushing unit figures out of reasonable ranges. But there's a lot of slop in there.
Yikes.

lol, I feel for you man. Not even Nintendo deserves to be this fucked even with their bad decisions. I feel even worse for the developers whose hard work will be squandered. Bayonetta and W101 are doomed. Sorry Amirox.

Sure selling 30k would be 100% increase. It still means no one cares. The market does not want Vita and outside of giving them away nothing will change where hte market is headed.

But... *sigh*... but I suppose it doesn't pay to be delusional either :(

Being a rational Nintendo fan stings these days. 3DS having Smash oh lord, it's like Nintendo doesn't want me to buy a Wii-U. If that game has any parity with the console version, welp there goes my incentive in buying a Wii-U.

Let's be honest, it sells well but its no Halo or Mario.

I think it would be wiser to bundle Killzone and announce a pricedrop for the regular SKUs while putting the Killzone bundle at $199.

absolute best-case scenario: every piece of hardware combined totaled about 500k for the month. for the entire month of april, the industry sold about 500k systems. that's including xbox 360, ps3, 3ds, ds, wii, wii u, psp, vita, and ps2.

i shouldn't have let jeff roll that die.
Just so you know, Wii U, you're creating six different timelines.

Pikmin 3 won't even be that big of a seller if prior games are any indication. Nintendo seems completely fucked until October or November when they release bigger games (eg. Mario, Mario Kart, Retro's game). Even then, that still has the possibility to not raise sales of the Wii U. These Wii U numbers post-launch are historically bad. A 3DS revival is seeming more and more unlikely as the months move on.

Anyone remember that crazy guy in the January NPD thread saying that it'd be impossible to judge the future sales of the console despite everyone already knowing the wasteland of the line up. He should chime in here, lol.

I don't know if I'm who you're referring to, but I probably echoed that sentiment back then, and would today. Yes, sales are horrible now. Yes, they have been since January. Of course they have been - what games have been released yet?

I am as critical of Nintendo as anyone. I think they've been horribly mismanaged. But I'm not completely ready to rule out them pulling a rabbit out of their hat this E3. Epic Fall Release Schedule + Pricedrop + Sony and Microsoft Both Overpricing Machines = Nintendo Rise to Heaven? I'm not saying it will happen - I'm just saying, it's still in the realm of the possible (and not just the wishful thinking).

A lot of people seem to gloss over the fact that Nintendo is still, right now, in first place in the Next Gen console race. They might get passed by this Christmas - and we can write the obituaries then. But it's not over, yet.

Most Wii U owners should pick Pikmin 3 up because it's an IP worth a damn.

Pikmin 1 and 2 are great games. Chances are 3 will be too.

Lol why would anyone buy that bundle when uncharted is free on PS+? That bundle is not going to do anything.

just to defeat any sense of mystery, here is what is going to happen.

the wii u will fold after the next holiday season. nintendo may fizzle the 3ds out and they focus on one piece of hardware to merge the two businesses into one. i suspect the next console zelda will just get moved to this new machine, and might serve as a launch title.

after that, you can get all your nintendo games in one place. it'll be sorta like the dreamcast with sega focused on one machine. just lots of games. that's the good news. the bad news: it won't be the games you want. it will be past franchises all day every day, and only the ones that sell a lot. no pikmin, no sin & punishment, no f-zero.

The way it's going right now, no game in Nintendo's arsenal (not Mario, Zelda, Metroid, whatever) could make the Wii U outsell the Xbox 360 or its successor.

No, it's not mario. Sony's only franchise that is close to mario or halo is gran turismo.

I agree with you about a killzone bundle.

Some consumers are generally ignorant of PS+. I don't think it will exactly shift many units but its better than having nothing besides a CoD and AC bundle right now.

I personally would prefer a Killzone bundle, as its the newer game.

I expect to be able to pick up a Wii U for sub 200 and a Vita for sub 150 by next year if I can even find Vitas on the shelves. Maybe import one from Japan if need be.

A new Uncharted sure.

Uncharted is not a big deal. In the thread where Ubisoft listed the top 20 franchises of the Wii/Ps3/360 generation, Uncharted was nowhere to be seen.
Eh UC is a big franchise.

Noooo! Someone convince me this is all a horrible dream and this system is not going to pile drive Bayonetta AND Pikmin into an early grave at the same time! Oh the humanity!

I just hope they manage to get all the software out they have promised for the end of the year, with no delays and continue to improve the OS. It's not going to suddenly be doing 500K a month, but it might go a long way to increasing the baseline, even to 100K.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I see happening as well. Nintendo has already started preparing with the new building they built to allow developers to better "share" assets and whatnot.

I think for a generally new ip this generation locked to one platform (until the Vita version) it did alright.

Obviously it didn't gain enough attention as Assassin's Creed but that was a multiplatform release.
