So my mother went to this thing held by one of her friends for beauty/aging products or something. And now she is thinking about dropping $1800 to become a product consultant. I'm hoping someone here can tell me if this thing is legit or if she is going to get fucked over.

My immediate reaction is that its bogus, but I can only find mixed reviews on the internet.

It isn't technically bogus, it is just another Amway type pyramid scheme that actually sells a product. My wife wanted to start Stella and Dot and I talked her out of it because I believe these sorts of things monetize your friends and are just plain trouble. She still hosts some parties for others but has not gotten directly involved herself.

^ What he said.

My mother in law is big into these Multi-level marketing scams. Sure you can get rich...if you're at the top of the pyramid but she isn't and never will be. Arbonne makes their money selling $1800 starter packages to suckers.

Yep, it is the starter packages that make the money. Then they basically want you to bother all your friends and family trying to get them to buy their shit.

And keep in mind that since one of her friends are getting her into it, her pool of potential customers is smaller than it would be if she started with a pyramid scheme that nobody around her participates in.

Alright thanks guys, seems like I should do my best to talk her out of it.

If she really wants to do something like it, there are plenty of pyramids out there that don't have such a high buy in. Different companies have different amounts of requirements for the sales reps. Better to avoid it altogether, but if she is adamant about it, you could help her research a company that seems beneficial, carries a product she herself would like, and that nobody around her sells.
