The generative ai for voices for pings and voice changing is bringing the studio Embark under fire at the purple hair forum.
A bunch of posters there are loudly proclaiming the studio evil because they are using gen ai for the ping system voices and for the ai voice changer.
The actors were contracted, with the knowledge that their voices would be recreated with gen ai for new items and such in game.
The game has been proclaimied "ai slop" despite embark having a couple hundred actual humans working there and despite the game being ready to ship a few years ago and embark deciding it wasnt good enough and rebuilding it.
A decision made by humans.
The game is selling it's ass off and is extremely well recieved by critics.
But to these insane fanatics it and the studio are worthless peddlers of ai slop.
Btw no npcs are using gen ai but even if they were If it was done well I really wouldnt care.

None of it matters if the game is fun to play, only the activist-minded and voice actors care.

I wish the last Pokemon game used AI for its writing, because the humans sucked at it.

I feel bad for the artists out there, sure, but AI is here, and it's only going to be used more and more. Even if the vocal minority boycotts things, it's not going to make a dent.

It's gonna be a tough next decade. Eventually companies are going to need to figure out that people who don't have jobs because they were displaced by AI can't buy their product, and something's going to have to give.

So what are people even mad about? Just using AI at all?

Sounds like it was implemented and handled exactly as it should in this case. As long as all parties are aware and in agreement I don't see the issue. Especially not when the game turns out great.

Their argument is "all gen ai is evil because they and other studios will keep using it".

Me: Good.

AI voices can enable some nice reactivity and interactivity that wasn't really possible with canned lines. That said, it's still far from giving convincing emotive dialogue beyond short barks. If you can have human voice actors, it'll be far better quality, unless it's like that Ada VA in RE4R. In one guy indie games, or mods for games with no other VO I'd probably use it over nothing even for main voice lines. Ultimately it's quality of the output that matters, be it bot or human.

the sooner people realise this stuff is never ever going back into the bottle the better

The genie is out and it will be a part of every single thing in your daily life in some way
