Sony has burned me with their consoles and prices. I don't ever buy them new or full price. Nintendo and Xbox for me. Sony can fuck off!

There's no such thing as a console going on sale anymore, so when do you buy them? Used at a pawn shop? I'd hate to have someone else's beaten up, old system. With mushy buttons and who knows what else that isn't great.

No I tried but the appeal of GamePass is too much. Day 1 games and I the interesting titles for a low price. Games Id have to pay $70 each for on PS5.

The PS exclusives are good, but I've already played them all now. For multiplat and MS day 1 games, Xbox is best IMHO

How about someone who isn't an Xbox diehard, but bought their first Xbox this gen since Bethesda games were their most played games on PS3 and PS4 and figured after Microsoft bought Bethesda the logical conclusion was that future Bethesda games would be Xbox exclusive, and now that that's no longer the case, they traded in their Xbox and PS5 for a PS5 Pro since it looks like this is going to be a really long console gen and the Pro should have the best console releases for a while?

Just re-upped GP for another 3 months. Good until March 2028 now.

I just subbed to PS Plus Premium for a year for the first time, and I like how this is implemented into the ecosystem a lot more than GamePass. Cloud streaming works great on the Portal, the Game Trials are actually really useful and have probably saved me some money on some games, and made me buy some games I wouldn't have bought outright, and the back catalog is really decent even if it's not Day 1 titles. It's all stuff I skipped and wouldn't have bought anyways, so it scratches the experimental itch of GamePass.

It does this without absolutely killing your day 1 sales of marquee titles, so it keeps the ecosystem healthy.

This is such an odd take. It's not renting. In the same way that Disney +, Prime video and Netflix streaming aren't "renting". And it's also got a huge selection of major titles on it. It's honestly quite impressive. Highly unlikely you wouldn't find a large number suitable to your tastes. No, it does not have every game ever released this generation. Obviously. But being able to play Indiana Jones without spending $70 and unsubbing and resubbing easily whenever you want, $20 one month, $20 four months later when something else goes up you want to play but perhaps not purchase… what's the downside, exactly?

It's one of those situations where people decide they don't like it because of which company is behind it, and then work out the reason afterwards.

Sub services mean you need to continually pay the sub service fee to access your games, and of course some of them may be limited to a specific time,

It's a different method of distribution and not "warring" to point that out, there's obviously pros and cons

I loved almost all Sonys 1P output every gen up until this one. I'm not saying all their games are trash, their output and quality is a bit down this gen, considering the os5 is an amazing piece of hardware.

I call it "renting" because that word comes closest to capturing what is happening - you're paying for temporary access to something. You're certainly not buying it. Granted, it's not "renting" in the old Blockbuster or Gamefly sense, but you're still purchasing temporary access. Once you stop paying the fee, your access disappears. MS can also pull games from the service whenever they like.

I trust that you know I am not coming at this from a warrior POV. To me, it's just a verbal-linguistic question. The word "renting" seems to cover it pretty well. You're paying for temporary access, and when you stop paying, your access is terminated. That's renting, as opposed to buying or owning.

Is there another word you would suggest instead? "Streaming" is just a method of distribution, so that doesn't cut it. It also misses the point, which is to differentiate the financial impact of renting vs buying - and its downstream consequences on developers and publishers, including MS.

Anyhow, I suspect that the issue is not really the word itself, which seems apt enough, but how it is used and who uses it. People wield it as a weapon sometimes in the console wars. They say "renting" with a sneer, as if buying a game is the morally superior alternative or something. That part is silly.

It shouldn't bother them but it absolutely is "renting" and down time on a console, broken offline mode, or whatever doesn't change this idea that it's renting. You don't own gamepass games, Games leave the service, you have to continously pay to keep access to the game. It's renting games as oppose to ownership. Somebody who continously pays to stay at a place is also renting that property, doesn't mean it should bother them but it's still renting.

Releasing their games Day 1 on GP is a one of the major reasons Xbox games are now coming to Playstation. As a business they want to make money, and their GP dream failed to bring in the required numbers for it to be cost effective.

Playstation has the equivalent in PS Plus, and didn't go down the route of Day 1 releases. Yes their games may come to PC down the line, but that's when they want to earn additional sales.

If you want to own Prey to complete your Predator collection or Axel F for Beverly Hills Cop, you can't. You can only access them with a subscription. If there were games you could only access via Game Pass maybe the argument would have merit, but literally everything on Game Pass can be bought if you want to own it (usually at a 20% discount too).

If you go on an AV enthusiast board you will see plenty of people trashing Netflix and all the other streaming services, while kaleidescape is frequently recommended in favour over any of the "rental" streaming options.

Not sure who told you every bethesda game is coming to PS5 but each game is separately looked at if it will be a Xbox/PC exclusive or not, also it's seeming like we will get the next generation Xbox sooner than later, I believe Microsoft will try to get their next gen console out a year ahead of Sony, much like the Xbox 360 days. A big reason for them skipping a pro model & how there has been talk about the next console from the Xbox team already.

Yeah if people want to view it that way I guess it never bothered me if I played a game via Gamepass or bought it I still get to play it as much as I want

I'm not sure if you read the rest of my post or just stopped there, but I said there that it's just a verbal-linguistic issue for me, not a console warrior one. A lot of people wear console warrior goggles and don't/can't step back and see the situation more objectively. I think that's happening here on both sides, persecutor and defender.

As you're implying, console warriors do use the word "renting" in a disparaging way sometimes (I mentioned this in my post). Likewise, some Xbox gamers get unnecessarily defensive about the use of the word. "Renting" is an accurate description of what is happening. If you would like us to use a different word instead that you find more palatable, please suggest one.

The problem is not the word itself, which is fitting, but the way it is sometimes used and/or heard. People won't stop calling it "renting" because it's a simple, easy way to differentiate it from buying a game. That distinction has important consequences for publishers and developers, so we can't just pretend it isn't there.

I agree that they wouldn't have a problem doing what you said, in the way you phrased it - "acknowledging that they have access for as long as their subscription lasts and no longer." But I do think some people dislike use of the word "rental" specifically to describe that process. That's what I was getting at.

I think what happens is that the word "rental" gets used by console warriors in a derogatory way, and since attack predictably elicits defense, you get people objecting to use of the word. But some people conflating the word itself, which is fine/accurate, with the speaker's intention, which is not.

You can also like something and still criticize it, and I do sort of agree that Game Pass gets evangelized especially by "games media".

I like GP, but I mainly only use it to play new games that I wouldn't want to spend $60-70 on to own or for games that I'm not sure on enough to buy. This is part of the problem though because why would I spend $70 on Indian Jones when I could just get a month of PCGP for $12 play it and possibly get my money back since Microsoft seems to always give me the option of getting a refund and cancelling early.

My problems with Game Pass are as follows:

• Pricing. Right now the price is still pretty good but people gotta realize that the price is only going to go up, and are you going to want to spend $30 a month on it? Putting games on GP isn't free for Microsoft (same with PS+) and the more/bigger games they get the more money they are going to need to charge.
• There is no chance that Game Pass hasn't affected how people buy games on platforms that it's available on.
• Game Pass can't really be reversed at this point as Microsoft are balls deep and have already started to pump that load so they can't pull out. They have focused their business on Game Pass and it's stagnated the last time I saw. Microsoft can't go hey we gotta focus less on GP because nobody is buying anything on our platform and our platform is in shambles as it is. They can't really do anything but continue to focus on GP as hard as they can until the entire thing implodes.

I just don't think Game Pass as it is now is healthy for Xbox as a brand.

The only Bethesda game we haven't heard coming to PS5 so far is Starfield, but when Phil was recently asked if that would remain an exclusive, he danced around it and said there were no red lines. I'm quite certain Starfield will come to PS5 when the second dlc is released, that should time up well for them to be able to release complete versions for Xbox, PS5, Switch 2 and PC. As for the next Xbox, if it has support for Steam like rumors are suggesting, and it's at least as powerful as a 4070 PC (what I have), I will get one, but primarily to play my Steam library on my TV.

The market leader has become complacent. Resting on the goodwill brought by Bloodborne, Uncharted, Greek God of War, The Last of Us, Heavy Rain 🌧, the list goes on. All those bangers from PS3 and 4, when they weren't the people choice. Had to fight back.

All I have to show for the PS5 are remasters of the glory days. Don't get me wrong, I replayed and enjoyed them. Rebuying TLOU ... again... Their best offerings being Astrobot and SH2... and classic remastered. Ghost of Ubisoft has nice combat and maybe a good story but open world checklists turn me off. It's been done to death.

Now MS is where Sony was. Fighting to reclaim the lead. Giving us bangers. High quality games like Indiana Jones. Under appreciated gems As Dusk Falls.
