Arizona bars state benefits to immigrants allowed by Obama to stay

Sounds like AZ has it right. US citizen? No. Pay taxes? No. Receive state benefits? No.
What's the problem GAF?

If they get a valid id and work...they will pay taxes. And i don't think the issue here is benefits. Most immigrants would be satisfied if they could work to pay for their college tuition.

LOL, really? Did you fall asleep during social studies in school? States have the right to make their own laws. And yes, it is very possible for a federal law and a state law to co-exist and conflict with each other. For example, if you live in a state that allows marijuana for medical purposes, you can still be busted by the feds for possessing marijuana with a perscription.

Smells like federal overreach to me. The federal government doesn't have any right shutting down medical marijuana dispensaries, let alone meddling with a state's immigration policy.

Seems like Governor Brewer is merely standing up for states' rights.

It's not good enough if you want to get to work on time. If it's shit, it's shit. If a car is vastly more reliable that's the point I'm making here. These people can't just up and move where ever.

If public transit is "shit" because it doesn't get you to work at a more consistent time than a car, then almost ALL of the public transit option in the US are "shit". You do know that cities like Los Angeles and Phoenix have fewer highway miles than most major metropolitan areas right? How can we even function with shit public transit and fewer highway miles? Maybe it's because we have a good balance.

except that one time they traveled 200 miles across the 100+ degree sonoran desert through furtive and most likely incredibly uncomfortable methods.

One time someone did something really hard that was temporary, therefore, I expect them to endure incredible hardships all the time.

Great argument, "except that one time" when it was a fucking terrible argument.

They are still human.

And they do pay taxes every time they buy something. They just pay less taxes than some other folks.

I paid taxes to when I buy stuff in a foreign country. Where are my benefits? And if they have workers permits, green card etc. that isn't exactly illegal now is it.

Yeah most US public trans is shit. Welcome to reality.

Which is funny to me. Even as a legal immigrant, you start working way before you become a legalized citizen which takes years in itself. Lots of illegal immigrants who came here from way back used illegal documents to work but still paid taxes like social security that they will never claim.

What's the problem GAF?

We are talking about people that have been here as a child, may have no connections to their birth country, may not even speak the language of said country. They are as American as the people born here.

Did you use the infrastructure In those countries? Sidewalks etc? More importantly, did you work for less than that country's citizens, with the tacit or implied permission of the corporations and their sponsors, and provide essential workforce that helped support that country's infrastructure?

So why do we have public transit . Wouldn't it be better to just use that money some where else. Like deporting illegal immigrants

Because there's not enough money put into them and encouragement to use the services because people know it's not reliable and shitty? I mean is this a question? We defund services, make them crappy and then wonder why they're not utilized?

Which is why I don't really understand your hard-on for slamming Phoenix for its shit public transit. I mean, there have to be other major metros you can also get off on like Minneapolis (about as much bus/rail service as Phoenix), Seattle (mostly relies on buses but is building rail), San Antonio (do they have anything other than buses?), etc...

I've used public transportation in multiple citys and i've never had a problem.

I know alot of people who use them daily .

Perhaps people should properly plan out their time instead of rushing within the least possible amount of time it would take to get some where with ideal conditions.

But then again we are posting in a thread in which people are upset with a state for protecting its people from criminals.

It's almost like we have a context for complaining about AZ's specific lack of good public trans.

Good for you I have too. When a bus breaks down or someone kills himself in front of a bart train. What do you do then?

Here's a quick generalized response: Not my problem.

Damn I'm just so racist and bigoty for being apathetic. I mean really GAF it's not hard. Obviously it's within the governments power to grant citizenship to illegal immigrants who've been in the country a while and are actually productive members of society and likewise it's within their power to deport the degenerate low life criminal ones. Problem is they're just lumped together. It's not hard slap SS number on the good ones and shit can the baddies to their respective shithole countries.

Get the government to legislate that.

troll account? troll account.

I've been late to school and work thanks to either overloaded or broken down buses even though I took the one scheduled to leave me at work or school early.

The same thing you do when a car in front of you breaks down or there is an acident and your delayed in that oh so reliable car of yours ?

I've been late to shool and work even when driving my own vechical.

There is no diffrence if your going to be late your going to be late .

Having a liscense doesn't make you mosses and doesn't give you the ability to part the red sea of traffic or make you intangiable and allow you to drive through lane closing accidents or construction or what have you.

Countless people are late to work each day regardless of how they choose to get to work.

Um we're talking a whole day lost here. Are you serious? If you could get in your car when the public trans is down, you can't still possibly make it. Or take another route.

I have a hard time feeling non-apathetic about an illegal immigrant not being able to find a job in this country because he or she may not be able to get a driver's license.

Say what you will about immigration policy and whether some form of amnesty might be appropriate, I do not have a strong opinion on the matter, except to say I can sympathize with those who cannot find safety and opportunity in their own country, and can also certainly sympathize with children who had no say in the matter. But as it stands, if the individual is not legally present, then I do not consider it an appalling position to deny that person benefits granted to citizens and other documented guests. I find it particularly absurd that some on one side of the issue are labeling people on the other as "racist." Do laws mean nothing?

This goes to both sides. Do something and settle the issue.

This is a sensible post.

When is public transportation down ?

How does that even happen ?

Do all the busses in Arizona break down on the same day ? Along with all the trains ?

Can you no longer call a taxi ?

No, no, just... NO. The addition to the economy from people who immigrated illegally at minimum balances out the tax burdens. And don't give me that we pay for their public school shit, those kids never made a choice to cross the border.

Can't Arizona get the same benefits from this from legal guest worker programs rather than illegal immigrants that come over? Why should we support illegal immigrants when there are other options that are legal?

I live in LA, buses break down all the time and there may be no alternative lines close by.
Same with trains.
Taxi's are expensive, they may not have the money in hand.

How can you register a vehicle, even if you can some how legitimately get a license, if you happened to emigrate illegally? How can you get insurance? How can you get a loan (not that one can't pay in cash though).

A whole day? Driving down Thomas on my way to work over the last 4 years I have seen multiple times where a bus breaks down and there is an "out of service" bus behind it taking on the passengers. You act like there is only one bus in the city or something.

I get the hate, I just don't get why you're taking it out on the transit system. Direct it toward our crusty as fuck governor.

So cars never break down ?

There is never hour delays on the roads that cars take ?

Cars themselves are not expensive ?

Yeah ever had someone jump in front of a train on the line you wanted to take into school?

Problem is that the ones that are trying to go through the system are on a 15-20 year waiting list. You can imagine why people are just crossing and going to work.

I'm a child of a US citizen and it took me 6 years to get my green card.

Couple things about what I just said:
Her parents moved to Canada before she was born. By default she's a US citizen because her parents were born and raised in the US
I was over 21 when I moved down here. It would have normally taken 18 months to get mine but 9/11 happened.

My green card has a strip that holds my entire life on it. It's uncomfortably big.

Never. Does that happen everyday?

You'll actually find I'm probably one of the most sensible people towards this issue. I think the compromise to the illegal immigrant problem is to shore up the borders and make all those who are here illegally into US citizens, except for those who commit crimes. I just don't think we can give anyone amnesty with the borders wide open cause 20-30 years from now, we will have the same issues and problems.

I do think that George Bush had it right. We need a guest worker program for areas like agriculture. That way, people can earn a living while being able to help their own country with money they take back home. That is one thing he is correct about, but unfortunately, nothing will be done if people are steadfast against the US securing the borders.

allways , they are like lemmings coming by the thousands.

The odd thing is that arizonia just keeps running the trains each day even though they just hit thousands of people and all these poor illegal immigrants are stuck on the trains all day not being able to get to work while the horrible legal citizens are riding down the high way going 100 mph in their bentlys getting to work in 5 minutes. Cause when you have a car nothing bad ever happens that delays you from arriving at work on time or loosing a full day of the week.

True fact ... there has never been a car accident that has rendered a car useless and prevented a person from working that day.

Never. Does that happen everyday?

Nope but I've been delayed by that, construction, trains malfunctioning, bomb squads, the bus to the train being late, and other stuff. It was pretty consistent though and I left to give myself about a 2-3 hour window in case that shit did occur. But the times I was late, while for class, would have fired me when it came to a job if they were strict about tardiness regardless of the excuse.

If I was driving at the time I could have just bypassed it and done that instead. Hence more options, especially being able to drive, are better than solely relying on public trans. Which was pretty much the point. And in rural areas you only get one bus per hour and it's usually only one or two buses. So if one breaks down, good luck.

In Arizona? No there isn't. Or not much that deserves to be called public transportation

HAHA oh my god i can't believe someone made such a ridiculous comment as to suggest that there is a good public transportation system in Arizona. It's a fucking joke, Phoenix is a giant shopping mall and a model of failed urban planning.

Coming from germany i can only spit on and pity this pathetic state.

Hi five!!! LOL. Actually, my waiting period was a bit longer(7 years)since my parents filed for me when they had green cards and when they eventually became citizens my case moved up. Now 4 more years to citizenship :( Oh, and i came here as an F1 cause i couldn't wait that long lol

Yeah, most of the foreign exchange students in high school that had to rely on public transportation to get around constantly complained of how garbo it was compared to "back home."

Central Phoenix is a mess. The Orbit and lightrail in Tempe make it a bit more bearable, but The Valley is pretty atrocious.
