A House committee voted on Tuesday to eliminate an independent election commission charged with helping states improve their voting systems as President Donald Trump erroneously claims widespread voter fraud cost him the popular vote.

The party-line vote came less than two days after Trump vowed to set up a White House commission helmed by Vice President Mike Pence to pursue his accusations of election fraud.

"We're going to look at it very, very carefully," Trump said of voter fraud in an interview with Fox News that aired Sunday. "It has to do with the registration, and when you look at the registration and you see dead people that have voted."

Reports that Trump told congressional leaders in a meeting last month that 3 to 5 million ballots were cast illegally during the 2016 race were met with discomfort on Capitol Hill. While top Republicans have refused to disavow his charges of election fraud, they haven't pushed for action on the issue, which remains a low priority for congressional leadership.

The vote in the House Administration Committee underscored, once again, the political differences between the Republican president and the party's rank-and-file. The GOP majority on the committee eliminated the Election Assistance Commission, which was created by Congress after the 2000 Florida recount to upgrade voting technology and provide election-related information to federal entities, state officials and election administrators.

Republicans, who lead the effort to terminate the agency, say it's a prime example of government waste. They've been introducing legislation to end the commission for years with little success.

"If we're looking at reducing the size of government this is a perfect example of something that can be eliminated," said Rep. Gregg Harper, the committee chairman, after the bill passed on a 6-3 vote. "We don't need fluff."

Harper said he hadn't spoken to Trump about the legislation. "He's certainly welcome to call me at any time," he said.

The bill was opposed by committee Democrats and voting rights groups, who argued that the federal agency plays a vital role in protecting elections from hacking and other types of interference.

"At a time when the vast majority of the country's voting machines are outdated and in need of replacement, and after an election in which foreign criminals already tried to hack state voter registration systems, eliminating the EAC poses a risky and irresponsible threat to our election infrastructure," said Wendy Weiser, the democracy program director at the Brennan Center for Justice.

Oh, but there's a slight upside which totally makes up for this bullshittery:

The legislation would devote $63 million of the available funds to pediatric cancer research. The remainder would be returned to the Treasury for deficit reduction.

Shocked. Shocked, I say.

And what can we do about it? This is going 3 be 2 years of awful news where we sit here and yell at the screen. This is fucked, this is beyond fucked!

So enjoy your next election being a fraud, Americans. Trump to win 110% of the vote - especially after cracking down on election rules to prevent 'dirty tricks' by Democrats. Your democracy has been written off by the GOP.

Quite a torrent of these sorts of headlines today. Why does the lying media want me to be depressed?

The fix is in. The only way to take back control will be with violence, just like everyone else throughout history.

The ruling class has made it very clear that people not in power are to be peaceful.

I've got to be honest, I'm really surprised that people on both sides of the political isle are letting this administration and the GOP at large run wild the way they are.

It's one thing for Republican politicians. They aren't shit, and I don't ever expect them to do the right thing. But the people?

People seem to think that our elections are going to be business as usual going forward, despite every indicator that won't be the case. It's complete foolishness.

Whatever. I guess we get what we deserve.

My bet is they're going to be in denial that the system is rigged against democracy for quite a long while. Beyond 2018 and 2020. Just like they allowed themselves to think the DeVos vote was legitimately close when the Republicans were simply putting on a show to troll people into having hope.

The feeling they have today had better be one they get used to. Meanwhile the rest of the world will simply smile and nod knowingly.

So, is this an independent election commission or the full Federal Election Commission (FEC) which polices lowest unit rate and other broadcast media ad policy for politicians?

I mean, I'm trying not to be hyperbolic and all, but isn't this just basically the end of democracy? If there's no one to oversee elections, how can we be sure of any election?

The Election Assistance Commission was established in 2000 after the recount and it would have been repealed no matter who the Republican president was. It's a helpful resource on the national level but elections are run by the states. I'm incensed about what the GOP has been pushing through, but it's not the least bit helpful to return fire with hyperbole, misinformation and drive by "we're/you're fucked" posts like above.

focus on things this, please, mass media. not whatever stupid little distraction bannon, conway or spicer are coming up with.

Yep, Dems won't take back anything without some sort of revolution. Too easy for the GOP to reshape voting laws in their favor.

Dems better be ready to cheat and steal and kill and do whatever it takes.

They don't and they won't. That is the curse of being righteous. All that will happen is that after 4 or 8 years they will get a chance and then again try and fix all this damage being done until the next GOP group comes in like a wrecking ball.

What is sad is that these Trump voters don't see they have the wool pulled over their eyes. But don't worry, they'll get a wall built for billions of dollars, and may ban muslims from 7 countries, but not from Saudi Arabia which is the #1 sponsor of state terrorism and where a lot of the 9/11 hijackers got financing and support and were from.

Everything's fine. Nothing to see here.

I haven't volunteered to help with the Polling Stations before, but doesn't the different state/county/city locations all sort of run their own thing anyway?

I don't recall seeing any federal observers walking around looking angrily at people all the times I've voted.

Half the people want this, though. America is so polarized that the wet dream of the Republican electorate is eternal rule.

This is so they can say to any opponents of the bill "you would prefer to put money in the hands of bureaucrats rather than save kids from cancer." It's hilariously cynical.

This is what I'm getting really confused about. I feel like I need a layman's break down of what exactly this does. Have we seriously eliminated the people who oversee our elections and voting? That's what it sounds like, but do states not do this individually as well?

Must say, it's very interesting to look from outside how democracy works in nation where one (1) party can do what ever they want, how ever they want to and when ever they want to because opposition has no way of stopping them.

GOP is moving fast and stacking fuck out of deck, while there is nothing Dems can do about it.
