Asian-GAF: We're all the same, like Stormtroopers |OT| |AT|

Back to work for Monday and Tuesday, but then taking the rest of the week off.

Had my dad, stepmom, and sister over for Christmas. It's always weird being an adult around them, doubly now that I'm married and am hosting. Still, it's a nice change. Being able to take them to all the cool food spots in LA was nice. Showed them the second episode of Master of None on Netflix (the one about immigrant parents) and they enjoyed it. Maybe one day I'll feel comfortable enough to talk to them about that stuff, but not yet.

Spending the New Years with my mom's family. We will probably go to a casino in Tahoe or something, since that's all her and my stepdad do these days. We're also throwing a wedding banquet for family that weren't invited to the wedding. The wife hates it but she's been guilted into doing so by her mother. The whole saving face thing is super weird and I will never understand it. Still, we should make some good money!

I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas or other holiday, and a fun New Years.

Back to work this week.

Christmas was good though. My bro and sis were watching Star Wars OT to prep for TFA since they hadn't yet. I myself hadn't seen the last half of the series. Also got to eat grandma's home cooking after it being forever, since she moved back into my parent's place. Probably the best part was sticking around the kitchen so I could learn how to cook it myself lol.

Ugh I'm back to work next week, but I have a heavy course load again. I kind of want a lighter semester for once, but I also don't want to give up my courses :p

I'm still on break for another week and a half before college starts again.

Sleeping, mostly. And making progress in the Trails games. I'll have food pictures from my LA trip up soon.

Glad to see that folks are (mostly) having a good break. I'm still on break, left for the Midwest on the 23rd and planning to get back on the 5th. Spent Christmas Eve / part of Christmas with the missus and her family, then we all drove down to my parents for Christmas dinner. Since then, been chilling at home (the missus went back to university to prep her syllabus for the class next semester) - mostly missing beer and catching up on DOTA 2 matches.

I think I saw two. One resistance leader, and I THINK one of the fighters.

No South Asians though :(

Poor India... 1+ billion population and yet almost entirely nonexistent.

If you're going to make a movie that has to appeal to the Indian and Chinese box office equally; probably not the best idea to have any overtly Chinese or Indian folks in prominent positions (countries still don't exactly like each other). There's a reason the Chinese TFA poster reduced Finn in size relative to the American poster. (assuming that wasn't a hoax or whatnot). Though I feel the hispanic love (FINALLY) with Oscar Isaac.

Though to be fair, we do have Bollywood. So it's not like we don't have lots of representation worldwide; we just don't have much representation in American films.

I really liked TFA. Finn was awesome. Rey was fun but got kind of hosed on the writing (hero's journey went to Finn rather than Rey, which was a weird decision, but I think they're going with the Furiosa idea for Rey rather than the Luke idea); Ridley and Boyega were FREAKING AWESOME. Even like the way Kylo was portrayed was a fun twist on the typical "dark evil bad guy".

Happy New Years (and Eve!) to all you sexy Asian folks. Eat lots of food, drink 'til you are full, and be safe out there!

Tomorrow's my bday so I'm going to be going out and getting hammered with the family. Last year was a bad New Years Eve and I know tonight will be ten times better!

Food pictures. I don't have pictures of most of the places we went to, but hopefully this will please the Asian-GAF overlords.

I have break for three more weeks... why is yours so short O_O. Also, you stopped by LA and didn't eat with me? /heartbroken

We got off on the 11th, which is earlier than most schools.

I was traveling with my parents so I didn't have much freedom to do what I wanted :/
We got good food, though!

Don't think I've posted here before, Korean living in New Zealand checking in.
I think I only saw one Asian in TFA - it was Ken Leung.
How did you miss the Asian comprised Kanjiklub gang during the sequence with the Rathtars? They had respectable screen time for their minor roles and Yayan Ruhian even had lines.

Yeah, The Raid guys were in TFA (and what a waste of their talent, not even a proper action scene -_-), and one of the X-Wing pilots was Asian.

Gonna fire up some soba around midnight to usher in the new year.

You guys doing any traditional stuff for the new year? My family would usually make mochi, but I'm lazy and just gonna make toshikoshi soba for a midnight snack.

Just wanted to pop in say the food in Thailand is sooooo good. Can't believe it took me so long to come to this country. I've loved eating in cbina the past few years but this just takes it to another level. Maybe it's the newness, but damn.

Also this country is pretty cool in general, though not as immediately warm and welcoming as most places in China. Dont get me wrong the people are really friendly, but they aren't quite as eager to talk to and hang out with a random foreigner. Might be because this place is crawling with foreigners to insane degree.

Long story short, everyone should visit. Heading to Malaysia next in a few days. Should be another delicious country. I'll share pics at some point.

Yeah next time gotta head to Vietnam. Love Vietnamese food in the states. Everywhere out here has good food. Korea is amazing. Japan is so good. Singapore and Taiwan and hong kong ... Uhh I don't think I'll ever live in America again. The worst is the food is mostly terrible in America and yet everytime I go home I gain a boatload of weight just cuz there is so much of it. I do miss Mexican though.

Hey guys, first time posting in this thread .. thought it would be apt since I am living in the heart of Asia. It's getting a bit lonely and tough to keep everything to myself so I guess it will make me feel better typing stuff out. Not sure if this is the right place .. I can delete it if it is not alright I guess...? I am a junior member so I can't make a thread in the other off-topic forum.

I would say my lifelong hobby is gaming or perhaps the anticipation of waiting for a game to be released, buying it and then not playing it (how many are like me?). That is why I joined NeoGAF.

I met the woman of my life and after some hurdles we finally got together. Deep down, we have promised each other to stand by each other in times of weal and woe. However, I broke her heart (it is a really long story). She eventually left for Tokyo and I can never ever know when she will be back again. We may never meet again as I know she will never want to see me for the rest of her life. My heart still hurts when I think about her and I tend to avoid all the places she has been to. 2 weeks ago, I was diagnosed with Stage C Leukemia. I no longer have long life ahead of me. My lifelong quest of waiting for her return may never be completed. I wish I could let her know about everything and it's not about searching for sympathy. I am afraid of letting her know even if I could. It's contradicting within.

Sickness has made me realize the importance of time and the people that matters most. Have a good Sunday ahead guys and thanks for listening to me :)

It's hard bruh. You seem to know the workarounds of a relationship and it's woes. It really is best to not contact her and tell her your situation. In your heart you know you want to tell her so that she can feel bad for you and return to see you but that's taking advantage of your illness.

On the other hand, telling her and being honest about it (your feelings, her feelings, both of your situations) will always influence the situation at hand. She may come back or she may not. You will always feel good about telling her because, well, you wanted to tell her about your situation and she may come back to you.

You are smart. Make smart decisions. I believe you will make the right decision. Good luck with your endeavors and I really hope everything works out for you!

Man, tonight on Family Guy was really, really bad. I have never seen the amount of stereotypes and racism displayed from Family Guy in a long while. Just Asian stereotypes after stereotypes. On National Public tv. No wonder I don't watch Family Guy or public tv anymore.

Maybe I worded it wrong but the vast majority of restaurants in America are generic chain shops. That's what I mean by most. Oversized portions of bland food and whatnot. Lots of good food in USA too but it'll cost you a fair bit and you have to look for it.

How is that nonsense? You must live in a large city if the majority of restaurants in your town aren't major chains. Every stripmall in my hometown is mcds, Taco Bell, Applebee's, chilis... Etc. have you ever been to typical American commuter community?

I've lived in 7 different states and have visited numerous others. You making whatever small town you lived in as the representative of all the food/restaurants in the entire US is ridiculous.

Lol ok bud. I've lived in 3 states and have visited most of them. Obviously that means jackshit since I'm so clearly wrong. It's not really worth arguing about. There is good food in the USA, I already backed off that statement, but if you think mom and pop shops outnumber the corporate chains you've got some sort of disorder. Only certain types of cuisine would that be the case... think "ethnic" cuisine.

Going from "the food is mostly terrible in America" to "it's hard to find good food and you'll pay a lot for it" is just hopping from one ignorant statement to another. You don't have to make blatantly false statements to compliment the food in Asian countries.

Again, I wasn't clear and in my first reply to you I clarified. Mostly, as in number of restaurants. Quantity. If you think there are more 5 star restaurants than McDonald's and taco bells then you need to get some functioning eyes. You are being a pain in the ass for who knows what reason... I guess you have a strange patriotic hard on for the Usa? Fuck if I know. Enjoy your night.

I'm far from patriotic but I'm tired of people acting as if Asian countries are Utopias.

Hmm, plenty of great local ethnic restaurants around here (and best of all, international representation, not just Asian) in Montreal. Big US cities with good minority populations should be similar too.

There's 7 Vietnamese restaurants within a 5min walk from my workplace, haha :D

North Austin, TX of all places has some pretty decent Vietnamese and Korean food. Nothing like the huge Viet enclaves in Houston, but not too shabby.

Lol saying the food is better and cheaper doesn't make it a utopia. Better is subjective, cheaper is a fact. There are many things that suck about living in China, but overall the lifestyle is pretty great (for a foreigner). Actually I prefer to live in Australia if I can, but it's tough to immigrate there permanently. It's also not a utopia, don't read too much into it please.

That's what I'm saying. There are many ethnic restaurants that are locally owned, but the majority of Americans don't live in super diverse, dynamic food environments.

Anyway, a few more photos from Thailand:

^ - I LOVE the pictures of people/culture. Is the long necks only for the women, or do both men and women do it? I know a tribe in Africa does something similar, and you can die if you remove the chains because the neck is too long to support naturally and will snap or something.

Bakersfield? lol

Central CA sucks :(. Not that great for the food scene. However, I will concede that produce there is bomb. Fresh meat and veggies and fruit... makes for delicious home cooking.

Yeah people interest me most for photography, and life in general. Hence my bullshit geography major. Oops. Only the women do the neck thing. Supposedly to prevent other tribes from stealing their women.

I was born in Fresno and raised mostly in Modesto. Farmers markets are nice, a few nice restaurants here and there as well.

Because I'm working in retail I love (read: hate) when other Chinese people come up to me and just launch into full on Mandarin or Cantonese, and I won't give them the time of day except in English - mostly because I can't. At best I will reply to you in English and mostly understand what you're asking, which is only really just Cantonese. I suck at Mandarin that I can maybe only count and say "I have no goddamn clue".

Man I suuuuuuuuuuuuure love being what amounts to a race traitor. An old man flipped me off today for not being able to speak Mandarin.

I usually get a scoff and/or laugh when I tell people I don't understand (in my heavily accented Chinese). Once in awhile I'll get called a jook-sing. hah
