Asian-GAF: We're all the same, like Stormtroopers |OT| |AT|

Another day, another dog-eating thread. All sorts of casual racism going on. A few highlights:

Koreans Try Dog Meat

Yeah uh not seeing any racism there.

It should be obvious that dog eating is just a regional practice in Asia. I don't see these two implying that all Asians do it.

For what it's worth, I'm a white American and I think it's pretty tasty. I also like dogs as pets.

People use the dog/cat eating stereotype as an insult to East Asians.. Even though it's not that common anymore, especially among younger people.

I'm assuming the point of the video was to show that not all Koreans care for dog meat. Even though it's available in their country. So having a video about Americans expressing similar opinions isn't really interesting??

I guess, to me, it's like making a video of french people eating horse meat(delicious, BTW).
Maybe not everyone eats it there, true, but it being available is enough. It would be like watching Japanese eat dolphin. Yes, not everyone does it in Japan, but it's available enough to make it non-newsworthy. My comment in that thread is that the video isn't like most videos of that ilk, as in getting a foreigner to eat something exotic/imported.

BTW, I have eaten dog meat and it was delicious.

Perhaps the video is for people who assume it's commonplace for most Koreans to eat dog meat.

But is it racist to suggest it ?

I didn't find that particular comment to be racist.

I meant for that what Vern is saying.

Those "X country tries....." Is usually something that is foreign to their country. The first popular ones were Korean Girls try American snacks.

To me, the video makes more sense if they got Americans (or any nationality that isn't from a country where you can purchase dog meat fairly regularly) to try it.

That would be more in the style of these "X country eats X videos".

That one really popular one was Koreans watch American Porn. It wouldn't have been special had they done "Koreans watch Korean porn."

Looks like I misread your intent. From the few I've actually seen, the "Koreans react to X" videos are reactions to things Koreans wouldn't usually see. I thought your comment was a driveby that implied that all Koreans are familiar with dog meat - sorry about that.

I think the video still has value even though dog meat isn't totally foreign. It's pretty clear that dog meat isn't normal food for a large portion of Koreans. Either way, I don't have an issue with your comment now that I actually understand.

Someone in the Black Culture Thread recommended I post about this here:

If any of you guys are high-schoolers/young-looking twentysomethings in the Atlanta area and are into superhero movies, Marvel is seeking out extras for the new Spider-Man. They apparently really want some Asians and East Indians to play high-school students.

If that seems like something you or someone you know would be into, you can find more info here:

I used to think SD had the best fish tacos but I had Ricky's fish tacos at Silver Lake over the weekend...the hype is indeed real. Hands down best fish tacos I've ever had.

I'd like to recommend HBO's Silicon Valley to y'all. No standout Asian actors in it unfortunately but it is a fine fine show haha. We are probably very tech-centric here so I think it will be extremely funny for you guys to watch :)

I feel like a lot of this article was about stuff that's happened 20 years ago at this point..

Interesting read nevertheless

Yeah, my city made this exact transition 20 or so years ago when more and more Asian people became middle class and moved into the suburbs. Chinatown was already fading at the time and it took the arrival of a national Asian grocery chain to really drive Chinatown down.

Nowadays, Chinatown is more Asiatown since other ethnic minorities have set up shop.

Interestingly enough though, the current Chinatown in my city isn't even the original Chinatown. It was actually about 5 blocks over and moved over to the current area because the rents were lower in the 80s/

The new Chinatowns.

Pretty interesting if you have the time for a read!

Thanks for the article. I wish it went more in-depth about the different waves of immigrants from China AND Taiwan and how both the differences in wealth, education, and culture has impacted the trends, but it was a nice primer. I, being the son of Taiwanese immigrants from the late 70s, have a much different background than my wife, the daughter of Cantonese immigrants in the 80s. And we're both very different than my uncle by marriage, whose Cantonese family came over a hundred years ago.

One of the few things we do have in common is that we hated Chinese school. In fact, there is an inverse relationship to the amount of years spent going and the degree of fluency in Chinese as an adult. I had the most years (11) and have the vocabulary of a 3 year old. My wife only spent 5 or 6 years and is fluent.

Basically, spending time watching Chinese drama is infinitely better at teaching Chinese than Chinese school is.

I thought I was the only one ....Went the full 12 years. Our class size went from 30 people per class x 2 classes to 3 people in one class. But yeah I know what you mean..It's kind of a joke to expect one 3 hour class a week to maintain any proper semblance of fluency. I luckily/unluckily had stubborn parents who refused to speak English at home and punished us for speaking English to them.

I almost graduated. But there was no way in hell I was going to lose my Saturdays during my senior year of high school. My parents still speak Chinese to me; I just answer in English. It began as defiance, but has just become the norm now. Now they laugh at me when I try to use my Chinese.

Heyooo don't know if there is any interest here or not but I'm starting an adventure tomorrow from Beijing and ideally clear across China to Xinjiang via Chinese style tuktuk (I guess most people are familiar with tuktuks?) I am going with a Chinese journalist for at least the initial part of the journey. We are going to do lots of video, photography, and just general awesome fun ridiculous stuff around China, showing off as much of this country as we can, good, bad, and ugly. Our first youtube episode isn't up yet but it's nearly complete, I'll share it later once it's ready. For now I'd love if any of you have weibo if you could follow me there, we have some initial stuff posted, and I'm on Instagram and a few other places.

Pretty much everything is @crossingchina. I've been on GAF a long time and I don't wanna come across as spam, I think most in here know me. So yeah, here are a couple links that are currently barebones, but I'd love feedback as I go and hope you guys can enjoy.

Here are some recent photos I've shot in China in case anyone wants to know my style (don't really have one lol, I shoot everything) or something before committing to clicking on a link. Also we plan on doing lots of food videos!

No no, you have to do it when you enter the restaurant. Going to the washroom is already too late.

I once went to a Chinese restaurant with our family friends and neighbours, and one guy had a tab set up at the restaurant already. o_o

edit: oops, double post!
