Asian-GAF: We're all the same, like Stormtroopers |OT| |AT|

I think I'm busy on Saturday, but if you're going to be in East LA I recommend Newport Seafood Restaurant. It's near a Mission and Factory Tea Bar if boba is your thing. You need to get there early though because the lines get crazy. The Lobster is delicious.
Check out Boston Lobster in San Gabriel. It was founded by basically disgruntled Newport Seafood employees, so it's pretty much the same menu, but cheaper, and the place is (slightly) less crowded.

I'm probably busy this weekend. How about a weekday lunch or something?

My schedule's a little weird because I'm only in LA for the 2 weekends. I'm going down to Carlsbad next Monday and back up to Camarillo for work on Thursday, before coming back to LA on Friday.

Well, there's also that cat food thread, which starts with a diamond in the rough.

I notice a weird smell in the apartment. At first I thought it was just some Chinese food he cooked up, but this was more of an unpleasant weird. Then I see on the kitchen counter a half empty tin can of cat food.
Eventually someone posts, "Do you rike it?" out of nowhere.

Asian skin CULTURE thread, more insulting than just Asian skin care IMO. Asian skin care is superior to Western skin care.

Also lol at the cat thing. I'm surprised it's not bannable to post that shit (the l/r jokes, the insinuation about east Asians eating dog/cat/etc ). SMH. Whatever.

bolded part so truth

Can someone explain the whole Chinese tourist thing to me? How that stereotype started, whether or not there's any truth to it, etc.

I ask because it's come up in GAF threads a few times and came to my attention again about 10 minutes ago because of what happened to Shanghai Disneyland.

Y-yay! Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. Now I have another reason to drink heavily during the month of May besides catching fish during the openers and cooking fish. Also, BBQ/Grilling season is coming. Prepare thy anus Asian-GAF.

It is total bullshit.

I feel for you. /patpatpatpatpatpat. Maybe President Trump will establish one, or twelve, after he's elected ;]

(In all seriousness when white people become a minority in the US I think there might be a need for one.)
.

Looking forward to it. The day trump is elected is the day I come back to the USA. 🙄

So really what happened at Shanghai Disney? I've been on a theme park kick this past week. Went to dinosaur land in changzhou and hello kitty world in anji. Dino land was pretty wack, but hello kitty world was dope! It gave a bad first impression (it's brand new but looks rundown as hell) but I had a blast there. All the rides were for kids but they still had some creative stuff that was fun as an adult. Dino land had only two roller coasters, one was awesome and the other was a knock off of space mountain. Ummm not sure where I'm going with this but there weren't any Chinese people acting crazy at either park. Is that what happened at Disney?

So meetup is definitely Saturday night right? Need to know so I can make my other plans

Wait... it wasn't before?

Looking forward to it. The day trump is elected is the day I come back to the USA.

Christ.

Really wish that China emphasized collectivity...seems like most people decided to be individualistic.

Funny story actuslly-- I have a friend from China (fellow student), and we were discussing values. Namely, American values. He told me that he was shocked by my attitude about stuff (I said that I needed to consider my family in decisions like marriage.)

He told me that he was absolutely baffled by what I said, and that he believed in "American" values like individualism and free choice. He was surprised because to him, being American means being selfish, and being like me is being "old school traditional mindset," which apparently is not the same as him? I guess it's my socialism.

A part of me thinks that a large group of people only watching out for themselves and not thinking of others is to blame for this. It's not a coincide Americans are also considered horrid and as tourists have a terrible reputation. Self centeredness and only looking out for yourself leads to the kind of Chinese tourist horror story.

Really, I don't think it's a coincidence that many Chinese tourists behave this way due to the massive cultural shift away from collectivism, and my dad would kill me if I said this to him, but I think they could take a page from another Asian country like Japan, at least when it comes to public property.

It sucks that his interpretation of individualism and free choice -> selfishness. I've always interpreted American individualism as "you are free to define yourself and your values" whereas with Chinese culture, it's you're defined by your various relationships (both professional and personal). I stress that neither approach is bad...just different. Anyways, I feel so out of touch with Chinese people these days...especially mainlanders.

I think my parents are lucky in that they were born the sweetest spot a Chinese person could be in. They managed to escape China's problems with Mao because they were born in Taiwan, but AFTER Japanese occupation, so they never had to face the brutalities there either.

Hard to believe those horrors are so close to us. #blessed to be here for sure.

Look up Taiwan 228. Can't escape brutality

It's interesting to hear different perspectives about Japan's occupation of Taiwan. On one hand, it was an occupation... but on the other, Japan did build up the infrastructure of Taiwan and modernized it. My grandfather was able to get out of poverty and become a doctor because of Japanese programs and education were made available to him.

Later on I learned, not through him, but through history books, that the Japanese considered Taiwan its first true colony as opposed to China (invasion), so they wanted to "do it right" and build up the infrastructure. Gotta say that the Japanese are pretty good in that respect. My parents trust Japanese manufacturing, and I can see why.
I've pretty much worked in Japanese companies for my entire career, and I really do think the general Japanese mentality of perfectionism, plus the American-introduced concept of "kaizen" (always be improving) creates a deadly one-two punch of efficacy. They just seem to have a completely unique work culture.

Regarding infrastructure, though, I recently learned from Freakonomics Radio that in Japan, they seem to value newness over sentiment, so they would, for example, tear down and completely rebuild their houses every twenty or thirty years. If they treat their non-historically significant infrastructure the same way, I suspect that's why they seem to always be on the cutting edge of technological advancement.

Jon M. Chu in Talks to Direct 'Crazy Rich Asians' [The Hollywood Reporter]
The adaptation of Kevin Kwan's 2013 book centers on a group of Chinese families preparing for a large wedding in Singapore.

Ahead of the release of his latest film Now You See Me 2, Jon M. Chu is in talks to direct Crazy Rich Asians.

Color Force and Ivanhoe Pictures are developing the adaptation of Kevin Kwan's 2013 book, which centers on a group of wealthy Chinese families. When the heir to one of the most massive fortunes in Asia brings his American-born Chinese girlfriend to Singapore for a wedding, the gossip, backstabbing and scheming reaches a fever pitch among the three super-rich families.
Plot sounds so Asian drama

I didn't know about this book, has anyone read it?

Anybody else here psyched for Uncharted 4?

Sorry, Uncharted is completely overrated to me. I don't understand the unbridled enthusiasm and unending praise a mediocre 3rd-person shooter gets. It's both the poster child and the worst offender for "cinematic" gaming.

Not really. I remember playing the PS3 titles at someone's house, and while they looked visually impressive, I think Tomb Raider provides a similar experience although I haven't completed it.

Put me under the 'Don't give a shit about Uncharted' column

Overrated?!?!?!?! bu..bu..but Naught GODS.../s

The fan wanking on gaming side for Naughty Dog as a developer is really off putting even as someone who's largely enjoyed their games.

Anyways, I decided to get off my lazy ass and cook last night. Made the Sichuan OG version of mapo tofu which is completely different from the stuff I grew up with (no Sichuan peppercorn and different type of broad bean paste).

I forgot to take pictures but I followed the video 1:1 and it came out as such.

We'll figure out where and exactly when it is by tonight (Thursday evening), and I'll PM you the details.

Also when I say what time it is I mean ON TIME and not Asian time.

Anybody else here psyched for Uncharted 4?
Me.

May I present to you guys...yellowvoice!

http://www.vulture.com/2016/05/meryl-streep-zendaya-nicole-kidman-guardian-brothers.html

The Chinese animated film Little Door Gods is getting a makeover for its English-language debut. Deadline reports that the Weinstein Company's English-language version of the film, The Guardian Brothers, will feature the likes of Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman, Mel Brooks, and woke teen Zendaya doing the voice work.
It is unclear if Streep, Zendaya, and Kidman will adopt Chinese accents for the film.
I don't know. The intent seems pretty clear to me.

Anyway, what's the scoop for tomorrow night?
