Assassin's Creed III |OT| Easier to read than Ratonhnhaké:ton

Yeah, he is kinda like Niko, actions and morales don't seem to line up quite well.

I think most people are just disappointed that you go from haytham to... this meatbag.

Ok, 5 hours in and I like the settings. I don't mind scaling down to the shit-hole Boston and it's countryside were in the 18th century. It's humbling the scope of the series in a way (I'd still like to see things as impressive as Brotherhoord's Rome) but it gives the game a more "human" feel.

Believe me or not, but I always found that the previous AC games were "dwarfing" the actual splendor and size of the big Renaissance Cities. Here, Boston looks like it should : a modest colonial settlement, growing in importance.

I like the atmosphear BUT, the first 5 hours are absolutely boring gameplay-wise. It's a sequencing of interesting cinematics (with a nice early twist, I was happy I didn't read anything about that), boring escort/pursue/free missions (little actual skills needed, and little player input altogether actually) and fucked up "stealth" (you can't hide properly, loosy use of covers and sights, instant failure when detected rather than leaving you in your shit and forcing you to escape).

I hope it get's better. But at least, the settings are keeping me in line.

It's looks quite nice on PC with all bells and whistles on.

And, is it me or does Desmond sounds more like a teenage 'tard in this episode?

For me, it was because he really didn't have any believable motivations in the end.

I couldn't voice act my way out of a paper bag, so I hate to judge, but I don't think Connor's VA is doing him any favors either. His voice is almost completely devoid of any distinguishable emotions. I have no idea what he's feeling because he sounds the same in every situation.

Just started Sequence 3. I hate this game so far, and I loved AC2, ACB, and ACR (liked ACR the most, tbh). I hate Haytham. I hate Boston. I hate just... traveling. Getting from point A to point B is just a chore, whereas I had great fun doing it in in the Ezio trilogy. Tell me it gets better :(

Small bone to pick: there's been a few points so far where an NPC will tell you "I'll meet you at X". Sometimes, the game makes you travel a long, and arduous path on foot to get there. Sometimes... you blink, and the next cutscene you're there. It's very inconsistent.

How do you play a game and hate it?

I think there is probably stuff you need to get checked in your own life before blaming a game. I don't know, it's entertainment at the very most it can be unappealing and boring (at the time). But I can't imagine hating it unless it was offensive or condescending in some way. Shit, people were fascinated w/ just two colored pixels back in the day...

Maybe I'm too optimistic for this industry or at least game forums.

I have no idea what he's feeling because he sounds the same in every situation.

He reminds me a lot of Anakin Skywalker in the prequels, this weird mix of over-enunciating and mumbling while never displaying any emotion at all. In almost every Homestead mission he says something like "I am pleased that matters have been solved amicably".

I enjoy it. Doesn't mean i can't hate bullshit no?

And I paid $50 on steam, shit needs to be really fucked for me to quit a game i bought full price.

The fuck kind of response is that?

I obviously don't hate it in the purest sense of the word. It's just not fun so far. Way to throw some unrelated personal jabs.

I'm almost in the same boat as you. Six hours in and so far, it seems like the most boring AC game ever made. Why am I being forced to do shit I really don't care about? And why is everything progressing so slow? It's like this game has the longest tutorial every clocking in at six hours.

I really hope this game picks up,soon.

Wasn't directed solely at you. Don't worry about it

It's just this generation. It needs to fucking end, it's lasted too long everyones getting antsy and pissy. The new consoles better be shown next year or I'm just going to have to cut out of this entire community/gaming in general. We're all fed up I think with this gen, that's why almost every game this year has been a disappointment and even the developers are getting tired of it. Let's kill it already...

Nonsense. ACIII is not a good game, not because gamers and developers are tired of this gen, but because it is a mess on technical, story and gameplay level.

As discussed in the previous page by others it sorely lacks any vision or direction. It's nothing but a bunch of segments stitched together at the last second without any oversight wether these segments would work properly, interact properly with each other or if it would add something to the game other than a time waster for the player.
It is also this lack of oversight that explains why there are so many game mechanics that have no explenation on how they work, or why things like the Homestead system is so extremely needlessly complex - there is no way a quality manager sat down and tested that out.

Not to mention the story is terrible, characters are all unlikeable and the unique selling point of this franchise - the historic setting, was a grave misjudgement with two utterly uninspiring and uninteresting cities that are filled with jank, traversal disappointments [rooftop running is pretty much gone] and situations that make no sense whatsoever.

It needed 6 months, if not one whole year in the oven to get these things sorted out, but they had no choice but to release this month and that is appearant everywhere.

Overly ambitous but failing to deliver on almost every front.

Funny how some of us are loving it ...

How is the homefront system complex? If there is one thing AC3 is not, it is being complex.

Also I love this setting then again I am from Boston so that's why.

Was speaking in general terms about the state of the industry right now. Your input is invalid. And this happens to be my favorite AC game in the series, so invalid in that sense as well. But I appreciate your input, hopefully you're able to get out of your negative funk to enjoy other titles this year.

So what is this? You think those on neoGAF who are being critical have so little control over their mental faculties that they've being dictated by how 'cranky' they are because the generation has come too long? Almost everyone here is older than 13, if they followed the rules to joining neoGAF. I'd say most of neoGAF is at least 18~30 years of age, so pretty much adults. Why is it that there must be some alternative explanation for why so many games this year were disappointing, other than that they were just bad or disappointing games?

I know you're trying to be gentle here Darknessbear, trying to be all saccharine about your statements here, but you do understand that this is offensive, right? To try to claim that this is some ulterior motivations or some brain crankiness that is making people state these clearly legitimate problems with these games?

How can you read the complaints about Assassin's Creed 3 and not acknowledge that, hey, even if you liked the game, it's clear that it has a lot of problems that people could not get beyond?

There is not crankiness at play here. There is not OH NEOGAF DECIDED TO HATE SOMETHING SO EVERYONE HATES IT (someone else said this, Darknessbear, not you). It's simply that a string of games have come out this year that have real problems and people rightly criticize them.

You go on about how you don't understand how someone can "hate" a game. Putting aside that no one obviously "hates" a game in the pure sense of the word, it is absolutely true that one can reject a game on all terms. Gaming is not a charity, Darknessbear. I don't know why people have to say this, because it should be self-evident, but it's true. We pay $60 for these products, and if they are bad we owe developers and publishers nothing by pretending otherwise.

People have gone out of their way to list pages of real problems AC3 has, and I just think it's a little sad that instead of just acknowledging these people have real gripes, you're trying to find some reason why they're not fitting your view of the world

While there are definitely real problems with AC3 there is also a shit load of hyperbolic statements in this thread too. If I just read this thread and didn't play the game for myself I would of thought it was a piece of shit. I am having a blast.

Right, but watch what I'm going to do next:

Oh I'm glad you're enjoying it, what did you like about it? What about the problems people have had with the game would you disagree with?

See, this is me acknowledging you have a different perspective and then trying to be constructive by finding out where we differ. It's not "well maybe Riggs you are just SO EXCESSIVELY POSITIVE that your brain has melted together in a joy fusion! Maybe after this gen ends you'll be able to start being critical again!"

As I said before, I don't think AC3 is a bad game the way some do, but I definitely think it's a mediocre one. And I've listed many problems the game has. Similarly, I don't think those who feel it is bad are exaggerating either. There is a fuckload of problems, some of them game breaking and mission critical.

What? Get out of here with this shit. I'm happy that you somehow managed to get some joy out of AC3, but you don't get to simply say someone's opinion is invalid just because you don't agree with it, more so when your entire argument is some far fetched idea that people are pissy because the generation has lasted too long. You're being really damn rude to someone who took the time to point out why the entire last page of is of people discussing the different problems they found with the game. We aren't just bashing the game because we chose to hate it from the start.

Hah I love you, I would post the pros and cons but I am on mobile. I was agreeing that this gen needs to die already btw as just a stand alone statement, wasn't suggesting people hate AC3 because this gen is old I know it has legitimate problems. I think the over all game is great though and I am not some casual who eats shit and thinks its great, being critical is definitely my style but for some reason I am able to look past this games issues it seems.

While the game has problems, I don't think it's worse than Revelations. I've been underwhelmed since AC2 since I was mixed on the setting and thought Ezio was obnoxious. However, all these games are essentially equal.

They did try some new things in AC3, maybe they didn't go quite so well. But overall, it's a decent game.

I absolutely loved Haytham and would love a game from
the Templar's
POV, though I guess it's all irrelevant after the end.
I want to know why he became a Templar and if it was just he himself -- a person with assassin bloodlines -- or Templars, too, have the abilities assassins have. (I assume it's just his bloodline.)
They should have explained that in the game, however.

I really wish they would have made Connor (or as I say, Radonhagaton) more relatable, or at least made the user more sympathetic to him. In the end, I did feel sorry for him, because his journey was more lonesome than Ezio's in a way, but only as an afterthought.

Side note, the homestead people gave me a very cult vibe, which freaked me out whenever I would interact with them.

Someone said the homestead system was too complex. The cities are horrible and uninspired and boring. I really love the setting, maybe its just me but I read those comments as hyperbole but I guess they are subjective, the bugs are very much facts and there is way too many bugs in this game. But I like the characters and city of Boston, but I do realize there are game breaking bugs and annoying things and I don't like them either. I am just having a good time with this game and this thread makes it seem like a piece of shit.

I don't think there's anything wrong with the setting, but those are just opinions. You either like it or you don't.

The homestead system was easy, but if you mean crafting and convoys; I would say they were more tedious and unnecessary, than truly complex. You don't have to actually send any convoys if you don't want. You should craft some upgrades, however.

I got some nice weapon recipes but no idea how to find the proper mats for them!

I never send convoys though fuck that.

Someone said the homestead system was too complex.

Not complex, perhaps, but pretty awkward. Unless I'm overlooking something, none of the menus in the Trading/Crafting logbook remember your place, so if you want to send six Wolf Pelts somewhere you have to click all the way down to 'Connor' and then all the way over to 'Wolf Pelt' six times. There's also the fact that the game doesn't really explain how it works very well, or why you'd ever need to do any of it. In the first half-hour of the game you're told to go and buy a sword and pistol, and the game pops up a tip encouraging you to craft a set of twin holsters which you can't actually do until Sequence 7 or 8.

I've been doing all the Homestead missions as they become available and dabbling in the trading and crafting whenever I'm near the manor, and I still don't know what any of it's useful for. It seems like I can buy all the weapons in General Stores, and the only thing I'd ever need a lot of money for is upgrading the Aquila (and money seems to be acquired more easily from chests than from sending Beaver Pelts everywhere).

Agreeed the menu is atrocious its like they took in some random star bucks employee and had them design the convoy menu, fucking horrible.

I have to admit, after putting in a good 5-6 hours I'm loving this game a whole lot more than any previous Assassin's Creed title. I really enjoyed AC2 and Brotherhood but there's just something about this one that is pulling me in that I never previously felt.

Perhaps this is the result of playing on the PC at a perfect 60 fps but the game FEELS highly polished and very well put together. Very impressive thus far.

I felt like that at first, but it did not hold that momentum all the way through. I still enjoyed it a lot overall though. I looked at the setting more like RDR than AC, so I didn't dislike it as much, but I hope they stick to fuller cities in future games.

At this point my standards for game stories are pretty low, so not a lot bothered me. I enjoyed exploring each location, they just make some really poor design choices in new and returning systems. Some awful tutorials and explanations for new features, as well as making them a hassle to interact with. Assassination Contracts and Assassin Recruiting should have probably been removed all together, since they do a pretty bad job with it, calling an Assassin never ends in them killing anyone for me from start to finish. Having played all the previous games save for AC1, they have made much better choices in the past and built much better systems, how some stuff got worse baffles me slightly.

Some help with Chapter 12 please (not the part that you think.)

So I finished the chase with Lee (why did you do that to us Ubisoft?) and now I’m back as Desmond. The thing is; I have no idea where I’m supposed to go now? I’ve run all around the damn place, but don’t seem to know where to go? I even looked at a video online, and it showed Desmond run to the room on the left and a cut scene kicked in – nothing is happening for me….is my game glitched?

I don't know? I've inserted two of those things in the past.... Is there a third that I need to insert somewhere?

I kind of stopped paying attention to the story, and was browsing the internet during cutscenes.

Enjoyed the game quite a bit -- even though the ending (the last two memory sequences) felt super rushed.

It will be interesting to see what they do next; the game next year will almost assuredly star Connor. But, with the Desmond arc being tied up, what's the point?

There's a third, down the route that you should see if you're looking straight at the main forcefield barrier thing and turn 90 degrees right.

I recall hearing on the Bombcast that Ubisoft had said Connor will not be in next year's game.

Even not playing on pc I felt this way. I think the new setting plus the frontier area really did it for me.

yep, the game is great, it's a shame that GAF decided to hate it, maybe later in LTTP threads it will get the love it deserves.

PC version specially looks and plays beautifully.

Hype-burned GAF is worst GAF.

I also really like it, excellent game and while it's not perfect it offers so much more than most games released in the past few months.

Unlike almost all of my friends, I am mostly positive about this one.

But fuck if there aren't a lot of things about it to hate. I don't think accusing people of disliking it by implying there's a hive mind consensus and not totally legitimate complaints about things people may prioritize and have different standards for than you does anything but make you look like a dumb child.

Well, all I see here is hate train, of course there are many valid complaints but some are really stupid, at some point people were just looking to say shit about the game over Nothing.

Anyway Im enjoying it, theres a lot more to love than to hate.

Hype-burned GAF is worst GAF.

I also really like it, excellent game and while it's not perfect it offers so much more than most games released in the past few months.

I expected something as awesome as AC2, which blew my mind at the time. I did not get it.

It's not a bad game, but it's a game that needed more development time. It's a clear-cut example of a game rushed out to the market.

Exactly how I feel. On one hand I love the setting. On the other I feel like potential hasn't been taken advantage of. However, I just got to the part where you're introduced to ship battles and trading. These two elements are awesome!

got this on impulse since it was on sale on black friday

i'm about 7 hours into it

just got done with the tea party episode

and i actually like the game (not enough to buy it full price). the beginning was slow but it made sense.

I don't care about this game anymore. I really can't bother myself to finish it.

I felt the same way for the first 10-15 hours or so. It helps that I really like the setting.

It was around the point where Connor grew up and started going on his real missions that things started to fall apart for me. Context largely went out the window and the story started to devolve into nonsense and absurdity.

Then you start discovering how many pointless systems there are that go completely unexplained and you have to wonder if this project even had a director or any kind of oversight.

I don't think the game is great, and I think it's even quite bad in many ways, but I still love it for the setting and lavish production values. I played it on the PC and it's the most visually impressive game for me this year. I just love running around the streets of Boston and meandering about the Frontier.

I'm just disappointed at how much potential for greatness they completely squandered, both inside the Animus and with the Desmond stuff.

The game does offer a lot of shit to do. Problem is, outside of ship and treasure stuff, they all kinda suck or are very mediocre.

Also, no reason to do anything really in this series, I mean, gear means jack shit, and so does armor. If doing a lot of shit could give me something convenient, like a magic carpet for the frontier.

I do hope they do eventually figure out a reason why to do stuff in this series :/

Yeah, it was kind of crazy how pointless it was getting new gear/weapons in this game after they made that kind of interested in ACII.

Also, did I miss the tutorial or explanation for the Assassin missions? I swear they never even mentioned that at any point in the game. I just happened to notice the "Press X" prompt in the Assassin menu like 20 hours into the game.

After all of the context they gave those missions in Brotherhood, I wonder why they half-assed it so much in this game.

Is anyone else having trouble with the Bocce ball game with
Washington
? The balls that are on the ground keep rolling during my throws. Is there any reward for beating him or another mission?
