What other open world games have this amount of freerunning elements?

That's exactly the problem.
Refer to my previous post about Parkour for a more detailed opinion.

They're basically digging themselves deeper and deeper holes, and the parkour will never work, and people will always feel like the character gets stuck or doesn't go where they want to etc etc, because it's just too complicated to polish.

That LT to get into windows works about 20% of the time in my experience. Sometimes it'll even have the 'Press LT to enter the window' tip on the screen - and pressing it does nothing.

...L2 to easily access windows...
I am yet to figure out the black magic circumstances that would allow me to reliably enter an open window by pressing L2.
  • If Arno is standing in front of an open window, L2 does nothing.
  • If Arno is hanging/suspended in front of an open window, L2 works maybe one time out of five.
  • If Arno is hanging to the left or right of the open window, L2 works one time out of three.
It is a thoroughly unreliable "dedicated" button press and it not working has had me killed at least once.

I'm baffled by the exclusion of certain things which were present in AC3,4:

1) Can't pick up dead bodies
2) Whistling to attract guards to hiding places
3) Using another guard as a shield against a gunshot, just rickroll all over
4) No secondary weapon mini-weapon
5) Stuck with fighting only with the main weapon, can't select blades
6) Can't pickup dropped enemy weapons
7) Lockpicking replaced with dumb test your reflexes game
8) Disarm and fist fighting is gone

These are just off the top of my head :-/
No secondary weapons? No fighting with hidden blades? Can't use enemy weapons?! No disarms?! Wha? What the hell?

I was planning to pick this up if Ubi patched enough of the issues, but some of those omissions are extremely off-putting.

Don't take this list too seriously. I did not know to care about these points as long as they weren't listed here.

The game works well without these options.

The parkour does work it's just not perfectly polished. I feel that this is the closest they've gotten to polished though when it comes to parkour, the old systems definitely wouldn't work in this kind of environment.

If Arno is standing in front of an open window you have you press R2+O for him to vault. And it's not just L2, left stick as well. It's the least polished new aspect of the parkour but it works fine when it needs to, for me at least.

We have different definitions of "work".
It works in the sense that you can use it, but it's incredibly complicated compared to what you can actually do with it.
The fact that it needs so many buttons to do very basic stuff (go up and down buildings, basically) tells you everything you need to know about it, and in the end, it shows its limitations every time you have to use it in a critical moment, be it a chase or an escape from the baddies.
I'm certainly not the only one frustrated by the AC characters going where you don't want them to, getting stuck on shit, and so on.

As i said in my previous page's post: It's too concerned with looking good, as opposed to playing good.

Well, sure the game works well without those option, but why would they take those out? I mean, as a fan of the series I kept looking for ways to be able to switch weapons, use a guard as a shield, whistle to distract guards and so on.

What would be the best way to do parkour in games? Quite frankly, "jumping" up a building by repeatedly pressing a button isn't much better than holding another.

Well, despite my better judgement I ended up buying this because a friend without a PS4 was desperate to play it. Luckily I only paid half price (he paid the other half, he's gonna borrow it when he gets a PS4).

It's okay. I think the 7/10s are pretty well deserved. The setting is great, the graphics are amazing, I haven't run into any crippling bugs, and the framerate doesn't bug me too much. The design of the assassin missions so far is great (I'm up to
the execution of Louis XVI).

The redesign of the parkour system is great in the sense that it's now much harder to do things that you really don't want to do. The addition of Parkour Down is much-needed.

However, character control is still frequently awful, to the point where it's a detriment to the game. Areas that require stealth are a masterclass in frustration, as Arno constantly attaches himself to the wrong sides of walls, gets stuck against knee-high objects, or becomes completely unresponsive when an animation transition bugs out. The new combat is fine, and fun, with small groups of enemies but if a crowd finds you not only does it become quickly overwhelming but it becomes so in a distinctly frustrating way: try to run, and you'll quickly be gunned down. Stay and fight and a combination of attacks and gunshots will do the same. Frequently Arno becomes totally unresponsive in big fights—I can only assume that the targeting system is only really designed to deal with 4-5 enemies, and becomes bogged down when there are 10-11.

The new escape system, similarly, is great when it works but frequently doesn't. Run into a crowd of people as you try and flee, and half the time you'll blend in and Vanish, and half the time you wont, and I'm yet to find out exactly when each occurs (realistically if anyone pushes into a throng of 40 people you're going to lose them very, very quickly, as anyone who's been to a gig or club can attest).

My housemate, who's French and has been watching me play, keeps commenting that I seem to do an awful lot of running about doing nothing, and it's true. There's probably more side-missions than any AC to date, but Paris is so large that even so, I still spend most of my time just running to get from one Paris Story to the next, or from the start of the mission to the first objective 300m down the street. And the Fast Travel system seems almost punitive, since the load times are so long that I'm dissuaded from using them.

There's quite a lot to recommend about ACU but there's still so much kludge in the mechanics. I'm enjoying it a little more than ACIII, but only just—ACII and ACIV remain the high watermarks of the series for me. I don't know what more I want from the AC series but I don't think I could take another game like this, even without the bugs. There's simply better things to spend my money on than yet another 7/10 AC game, with all of the frustration that entails.

[edit] Oh, and AC Initiates is completely broken for me, still. Despite having owned and completed every AC game except Liberation HD and Freedom Cry, none of them have shown up on my profile. I'll have completed the game without unlocking any of the rewards I'm entitled to very soon.

Isn't the requiring a button press to start freerunning thing a return to the mechanics of AC-thru-Revelations? I thought they removed the need to hold A/X with III? In any case, it's still kind of frustrating because sometimes it doesn't matter and Arno will climb onto smaller objects even without X held down; and then you need to hold O to get off them anyway.

Yeah it is pretty disappointing that they removed it. I use to love disarming guards then dropping their weapons and brawling. Felt pretty bad ass. Wish they hadn't removed that

You need the left analog, A, B, RT and LT to enter windows, all in various different combinations.

Yes, that is over complicated, when a game pad had about 14 or so buttons to do everything in the game.

And it's not just the amounts of buttons, either, it's the paradox of not requiring any skill to use, yet needing various combinations depending on where you are and what you want to do.
Sometimes A gets you up, but sometimes you have to use the analog to go up instead, etc etc.

All they really needed was the analog, a jump button, and a grab button.
Jump on walls, use the stick to run on the walls, press grab to grab, let go to let go and "descend".
Would've been simpler and it would've required a bit more skill.

I know the selling point of the very first AC was that oh so good looking climbing, but if after about 700 titles they still haven't managed to make it work in a way that people do not constantly bitch (with reason) that the character doesn't respond as it should, or that you can't successfully escape etc etc, they should consider scrapping it for good and starting over, instead of keep "polishing the turd", so to speak.

Alright what the hell.

My Initiates levels has reset, literally wanted to re-link my account and then I kept getting endless updates about leveling up the Profile. Never went back to what it was (I was level 13)- what happens to my in-game costumes?

Argh,

Maybe the framerate has stabilized? It still looked like it was chugging when I ran around for the last 20 minutes (PS4).

Patch already installed? People on Ubi forums are saying that movement is better and the game overall runs better.

While sprinting on the ground hold O to make him stick to the ground and vault over objects instead of climbing them. RT alone still=parkour just straight forward and low objects will be grabbed.

Infamous SS does that one jump button and one grab button system and it feels way worse than anything I dealt with in Unity during my playtime. It's a type of system that is easy to learn but hard to master. Harder than the other AC games at least since I did initially have trouble with it for the first three hours before fully getting a grasp on it.

Yeah, I just logged in online to the Initiates Profile page. All badges, progress, everything has been reset. No profile picture or anything- that's pretty damn upsetting to me. Also, the linked accounts don't seem to be working (things that were previously unlocked are gone).

Yup. They screwed up Initiates again. How could they manage to continually fuck up like this?

Checked my xbox one store on smartglass and you can buy Unity standard edition for £54.99 but when I go to gold edition Nothing is listed....Same goes for the season pass... Just a pin option nothing more

Yeah, this behaviour is still annoying to me. I realise that they probably wanted to introduce some kind of skill level to manoeuvring on the ground but having him leap onto small crates etc. that are in the way is just frustrating.

nevermind, someone already clarified this.

Unity is in a weird place for me. Sometimes the freerunning works wonderfully and I feel awesome leaping from roof to roof. and then I'll get stuck for a moment and it all shatters. I'm still enjoying the game, but it takes me out of the experience more than I expected.
