Assassin's Creed Unity -- The graphics "leap" we've all been waiting for.

Read my previous post. Uncharted 3 custscenes and ingame models are the same. They have the same polycount. Sadly the ingame model is stiff and doesn't have as many detailed body and facial animations like the pre-rendered animations and he misses many stuff and interactions you see in cutscenes since they are recorded and not real-time. From what Corinne Yu has said, Uncharted 4 will ditch pre-rendrerd cutscnes and everything will be real-time and the thing you see in cutscenes, you will get it ingame too which translates to seeing other skins applied to cutscenes just like how you can play them ingame (this feature was missing in previous games: you play other skins ingame but the cutscenes switch back to default model since they are recorded). Expect now to see bugs even in cutscenes that come from the ingame code if it witnesses any (and I hope not) since the cutscenes are no longer just separate video files but use the ingame code directly.

yeah the model in-game was the same but the animations was not so complex like in the cutscene....now we'll see how uncharted 4 will manage the whole thing...

3200x1800 @ 4xmsaa - GTX980 SLI + 3930k @ 4.6.

OH MY HEART :O <3

But honestly, my system doesn't handle it too well. I get ~30fps with stuttering and dips into the low 20s; still playable but certainly not enjoyable.

Shoots myself in the head </3

BTW, is tessellation released? I know Far Cry 4 is waiting for Hairwork patch which will kill every card. What are the promised features not available in Unity yet? I expect Tessellation , when enabled with all the previous features, to put your high end rigs into an ordeal lol.

tesselation is someday lol. Think they are frantically fixing other stuff atm before releasing that update :X

Still can't access customization/skills as of update 2 on pc without hard crash :(

So I was just messing around with some of the Inspector settings....

If I create a custom resolution of 3200x1800 @ 30hz, disable v-sync, and cap the game at 30fps, I get a silky smooth experience with 4xmsaa. The game still feels really good at 30fps, especially when it's stutter free. For those of you having performance and stutter issues, try locking it to 30hz @ 30fps

EDIT: never mind, it still stutters...probably a VRAM limit

I can't wait for that, but I haven't seen any dates yet. Tessellation in this game is just icing on the cake, but I wonder how extensive it will be...

It's definitely going to be a performance hit, but I can't imagine it taking a chunk of 15-20fps like PhysX smoke in Black Flag does. God forbid I have to play the game at 2560x1440 @ 2xmsaa :P

Black flag has more impressive foliage, water and IQ by far.

I'd say Unity has some nice looking water too. I especially like this area.

I think Unity has better looking splashes as well. Effects for player interaction with water (outside of the boat) were surprisingly bad in Black Flag.

Also, GOW3 (maybe GOW Ascension too) Kratos doesn't use LOD even in the moments where Kratos looks very far or tiny like in the ant size when he was hold by Cronos' fingers, he is still maintains his 35K polys (not 20k like many think, since the final version has Kratos with 35K instead of the 20K in the demo in which Kratos has his toes just as flat texture while in the final game he has his toes fully 3D, and this was confirmed by a dev in Official GOW3 release thread) and his muscles still flex even in that position (which confirms the absence of LOD).
Yup, they didn't want to spend extra memory for the LoD models.
They most likely culled non-visible polygons with SPUs, so the cost was not as bad as one would think. (RSX never saw polygons which didn't occlude sample point in a middle of pixel.)

Yes you are right. I remember them running out of time to get multiple LOD models optimized without filling more memory that is why they kept the original model for Kratos that they used for every distance. Yes, I have a vague memory about them using SPUs like you said to overcome that problem.

Somebody should make a new thread just for AC: Unity screenshots so we can just dump everything in one place (there are also a lot of amazing shots in the PC screenshot thread).

Well of course it is, though they may tone more stuff down exaclty for the reason stated above.
Hopefully the app and other stuff considering that apparently the npcs aren't the main issue for the framerate problems according to their tests.

After this year i doubt Ubisoft is going to be graphically ambitious with their games ever again
The Division.

What i should have said is after all of there announced games are released they wont release another graphically intensive game again

They are going to keep releasing games like Far cry 4 using 2-3 year old tech and people will praise them for there optimization

Well they could be right now working on rebuilding everything from the ground up for the next AC that will inevitably come out in 2017 while simultaneously reusing assets for the development of AC 2015. Seems like this series has trilogies before moving on to the next stage. I could be wrong though it remains to be seen. And ACU's tech is quite frankly a bit ahead of it's time for all the things that are happening at once. We can only go up from here.

Couldn't they just keep their graphical bells and whistles and just lower the npc count and improve performance that way?

I really wish they had included an option in the game to reduce NPC count to boost performance. I really don't care anything about having a ton of NPCs on the screen. It can be impressive sometimes, but in the end, I'd rather have a higher framerate.

Agreed. I was thinking about ubisoft going forward and some people here speculating about ubisoft not pushing graphics anymore after this. They propably will want to get people excited with graphics in the future too 'cause that seems pretty easy to do, so I think they will continue to push graphics but they obviously have make a compromise if they don't want another debacle about bad performance so I think the easiest way would be to just accept that thousands of NPCs on the screen at the same time is not a killer feature and just dial that down.

Didn't the guy who modded Watch Dogs also find a way to increase or decrease civilian density? Wonder how that can be done in Unity through modding.

Remember when people were saying Black Flag looked better and it was even 1080p(on ps4)? Jokers, this game is seriously gorgeous on pc, I can't believe the graphics sometimes and I'm 15 hours in or so.

These jokers are present in this thread and will defend that game to their deaths.. fair enough as visuals can be subjective......... but I have a hard time wrapping my head around that idea. AC:U is stunning in all aspects... Black Flag looks like just another game.

I haven't played the game, but looking over those images in the OP it still jumps out to me that Altair's outfit is my favourite in the series so far.

It's a great outfit, although I would have to say that the updated version of it looks even better. The black version of it, you get it from the Nostradamus quests.

This is my personal favourite shot in the game.
I really love the tech and attention to detail nearly everywhere in an open world game, I'm not even mad about the performance because what it's pushing is just impressive as fuck imo.

wow...that's actually a fairly large difference in IQ. I was not expecting the PS4 version to be so blurry by comparison....

People underestimate how much of a difference IQ can make.

A perfectly sharp image with no jaggies can make even older games look amazing. Unfortunately this usually requires supersampling or downsampling, which is very demanding.
Makes me wish games were still DX9, you could force 4xSGSSAA and get almost perfect image quality at a reasonable performance hit.

But these days most devs just slap some post-AA on and call it a day.

After this year i doubt Ubisoft is going to be graphically ambitious with their games ever again

That would be sad. If developers cave to this attitude that a game is "poorly optimized" just because it is demanding, with no consideration to what the game is doing from a technical standpoint, we all lose.

Assassin's Creed Unity's performance is in line with what it is doing graphically and from an overall technical point of view. It runs well, in my opinion, considering how good it looks. There are quite a few games I could mention that aren't too different performance-wise, but are much less graphically advanced than AC: Unity.

For anyone waiting for their Xbox one invite to be accepted to the club, I am sorry for the delay. I have been on a business trip and will return on Friday to accept all your requests. Sorry for the delay and I look forward to co-oping soon!
