Astro Bot |OT| Robot in disguises

Finally got around to playing this. Dropped it during the second "galaxy" or whatever it's called. It's just way too easy and boring. Reminds me a lot of that Sackboy game that came out when the PS5 launch. I could see it being great for kids, but that's about it.
  • They went overboard with the DualSense vibration and trigger features. I already find them to be mostly mediocre, but here they become so overwhelming that I had to go into the system menu and turn them off.
  • Image quality isn't very good. I played on a 1440p monitor and it had an overhaul soft/blurry appearance. I don't know if it's the anti-aliasing they're using or what but if you told me the game was actually rendering below 1440p I'd believe you. Depth of field was also overwhelming at times. I wanted to turn it off the whole time I was playing.
  • The whole Astro Bot aesthetic on everything just doesn't look good, in my opinion. It's flat and uninspiring.
  • Move set is very limited, so there's no real depth or reason to try and explore what the main character is capable of.
  • Levels are extremely linear. No incentive to explore or try new things
  • While you're given a backpack in each level that adds to your abilities, it's designed to work in very specific areas for very specific obstacles. It's not like the suits in a Mario game where you're encouraged to find new ways to take advantage of your moves when you have it on.

Damn.....opinions, I guess. The game was fantastic for me. Guess this falls into the "not every game is for everyone" category. Oh well

Sackboy is actually challenging though

I honestly think that it's the best platformer I've ever played.
I had a permanent smile while playing this and I loved its simplicity.
Also the little physics details with the little bits is something that looks phenomenal.
I'd love them to expand the moveset and do something open world next.

You probably went in expecting open hub style like most other 3D Marios, but Astro, what few entries there are, were more akin to 2D style Mario levels, put into 3D. AB levels are meant to be linear more or less. It's especially evident with Rescue Mission. Granted, AB 2024 did expand out the explorable areas/hubs, but they wanted to keep it more focused to keep that dopamine wave flowing. I hope they keep it that way and not make a "Grand Adventure" style padding out hours. And the challenge is most definitely there. But you'll have to find those levels. Maybe try again later with a different mindset.

I agree, Astrobot and Mario Odyssey are my favorite platformers EVER. Although I like DK Bonanza, I don't see the reason it is getting all the praise. It's a good game, but certainly not as special as Odyssey or Astrobot.

Personally, I rate Astro Bot higher than Mario Odyssey and DK Bananza. I've tried twice to play Odyssey and it just didn't click with me. DK Bonanza was a heck of a lot more fun. Astro Bot though.....fun factor was just through the roof.

I agree!
Astro Bot is up there with Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 for me!
easily the best 3 platformers ever!
of course that's just like my opinion, man!
