Astro Bot was so good it almost "outdid Nintendo at its own game", says former Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aimé

Astro Bot was nominated for four awards at the New York Game Awards last night, which were co-hosted by former Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aimé. Of those four, it went on to win three: The Tin Pan Alley Award for Best Music in a Game, the Central Park Children's Zoo Award for Best Kids Game and the Big Apple Award for Best Game of the Year.

With Fils-Aime hosting, and after numerous comparisons between Astro Bot and some of Nintendo's own Mario platformers, the stage was set for the big man to give his verdict. Thankfully, his words about Astro Bot were playful and full of praise.

"I have to admit it," Fils-Aime said, "Astro Bot almost outdid Nintendo at its own game." This good-humoured remark was met by appreciative laughter.

My only feedback to Team Asobi for future Astro Bot games is create levels and gameplay opportunities where you can choose how you tackle challenges. For example, you put the dog on my back, I know it's going to be a level where I just ram through stuff. What if you gave me the option to put the dog on my back, or be a giant sponge and I could get through the level and its challenges either way? Maybe get different rewards for both.

It is better than Mario Sunshine and Bowser's Fury, so they did outdid them.

It was far better than Super Mario Odyssey.

The fact we’re comparing it to such old games just goes to show you how far ahead Nintendo truly is in this regard.

Sunshine came out on the GameCube…

Astro Bot has zero chance of overtaking Super Mario. That’s a ridiculous proposition. That’s like suggesting Palword is going to overtake Pokémon.

Sony needs to be installing deep water industrial mining gear over their Japanese well of talent. Astro Bot is proof. I hope they do.

Super Mario Odyssey came out in 2017 and is the latest 3D title in the series...

Even if you compare it to the latest game, Super Mario Wonder (which is a different kind of side-scrolling platformer), and the Bowser’s Fury expansion for 3D World - Astro Bot came out on top with critics and players alike.

Palword didn't overtake Pokemon in sales but it certainly embarrassed them.

Yeah, that’s almost a decade in between. Odyssey was amazing upon release and still holds up today.

Wonder is a side scroller and an amazing one at that. It’s not comparable even one bit.

In between what?

Nintendo haven't released a mainline 3D Mario since Odyssey. It's chronologically the closest and the most stylistically relevant comparison to Astro Bot.

Exactly, let’s wait until Nintendo releases the successor before comparing them.

Nintendo isn’t Ubisoft with annual releases.

Yep totally was. Odyssey is a black mark on the Mario series like sunshine, might as well have been made by Ubisoft

Just not a fan of Astro at all bro. And no amount of convincing will ever change my mind otherwise :messenger_grinning_smiling:

I think every single 3D Mario beats the shit out if it, especially Odyssey.

Describe how Odyssey sucks.

For starters, the artistic design is lacking, there’s almost zero charm in comparison to prior titles, and it’s lacking visual consistency. The city world, bowsers castle, Jurassic kingdom, do not look like they were designed by the same team that brought us the richness of the galaxy series. It looks like a low-effort, bland, Ubisoft made version of Mario

The level design is uninteresting, lacks any sort of depth and density, and is riddled with challenges that are derivative and uninteresting that do not take advantage of the great controls on offer

The bosses are cookie cutter, cut and paste recycles without any interesting hooks or grandiose scale. AstroBot’s production massacres it

Some of the most unmemorable music tracks in the series, none of which is featured on my own personal playlists.

Probably the most disappointing releases I’ve ever played, expectations were very high when they announced 3D Mario was returning only to be sorely disappointed

Nintendo is the one to learn from when it comes to platformers. That and clearly team asobi are extremely talented. Glad they're getting the praise they deserve and earned. Astro Bot is not as good as super mario galaxy but its about as close as it can get.
