Astro Bot was so good it almost "outdid Nintendo at its own game", says former Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aimé

The full post is quite something but I choose this as peak Pikmin nonsense.

Astrobot Rescue Mission VR, (not the new one) is a generational experience that innovates and transcends everything in the genre since Mario 64. The mechanics and level design are nothing short of genius. I'm putting this in context so you understand how wrong your claim of Asobi being "amateurs" or "average" is.

There's nothing average about Astro. The music is fantastic, the graphics and animations are beautiful, the MECHANICS, which is the core of the game, are varied and fun. It is you who don't understand what this game is about. Comparing the platforming of this one to Mario is as dumb as comparing it to Little Big Planet. The game is about finding robots and exploring the map, not about making precise jumps.
That’s twice you called people “pikmins”. your really proud of that one aren’t ya 🤣

I was judging Astro against all platformers. I put the fat plumbers name in there once to wind you fanboys up but at no point do I directly compare Astro to Mario

You guys are hilarious

Unfortunately, the other arguments are mainly subjective.

“I found this boring”, “this part was repetitive” therefore this game sucks/is better

Platformers are especially highly subjective. Someone will find Banjo Kazooie charming, someone else will find it a clunky mess. It’s like that because so much of 3D platformers’ gameplay revolves around gimmicks.
but numerous people have supplied detailed reasons why it falls short of its peers from a game play/design perspective . “it’s boring” “it’s repetitive” is the level of the discussion the fanboys are bringing

Yep - Astro's mechanics are brilliantly designed - used in very clever ways used with the level design in mind, and feels very tactile and immersive.

Odyssey's Cap system, as someone mentioned previously, is woefully artificial in comparison - lacking any sort of real thought to the implementation or level design that makes these additions fun or interesting.

It's amazing how much worse Odyssey regressed in terms of these areas of design versus Galaxy.

Odyssey has objectively larger and more expansive environments. Odyssey has Cappy which results in more variety in mechanics… and the list goes on.

Detailed reasons are nothing more than their personal preferences.

They must be boxing some good crack in those PlayStations for the video games to not be artificial.

What are you even on about? Are you even replying to the right person?

Pointing out how a game is all flash and no substance isn’t a personal preference.

I didn’t request the game to change to suit me I mearly was pointing out how shallow the gameplay is.
If people don’t want that then stop comparing it to games that have mastered and perfected platforming mechanics decades ago.

Let it be its own thing

Calling Odyssey’s gameplay shallow is just nonsense.

Again, what are you on about? I never said odessey’s gameplay shallow.

Your either mixing me up with another poster or your reading what you want to read

How did you possibly get that out of anything I posted?

Super Mario Odyssey came out in 2017 and is the latest 3D title in the series...

Even if you compare it to the latest game, Super Mario Wonder (which is a different kind of side-scrolling platformer), and the Bowser’s Fury expansion for 3D World - Astro Bot came out on top with critics and players alike.

Palword didn't overtake Pokemon in sales but it certainly embarrassed them.

I still believe they should make use of the engine from the xenoblade series

It certainly feels like a top quality Mario games when I play it. Makes me wonder how good a Mario game would look on decent hardware.

It is better than Mario Sunshine and Bowser's Fury, so they did outdid them.
I wouldn't say better than Bowser's Fury, but different.

As much as I loved Astro Bot, Bowsers Fury had some really experimental and interesting takes on progression and platforming levels being integrated in the (open) game world. Not to mention the traversel mechanic AND the Godzilla Bowser vs Goku Mario vibes.

I love Astro Bot, but it lacks this extreme soulfulness, something unique and special, that most Mario games have. The Astro Bot team came really, really close; but to me, they're just not there yet. Maybe in their next game; that rumoured Ape Escape title.

I wouldn’t be surprised if I was the biggest Mario fan on GAF, and I 100% agree. And there are dozens of minuscule Nintendo-isms in Astro Bot that no other developer has ever done, which is one of the reasons why that game feels to right, polished, and charming. It really does have the Nintendo magic, and that’s not at all something that’s actually easy to imitate and execute well.

Astro Bot is the real deal in the 3D platformer space. That game is absolutely phenomenal.

Almost? It's better than anything Nintendo released this gen. The Mario 3D games are no longer great. They're just really good and not memorable in the slightest.
Boys and girls, this is what happens when you are so starved of platform games that when a half decent platformer appears they lose their minds with wild takes like this lol.

Personally rescue mission in vr is way better than the newest Astro. Been inside his world trumps boring flatscreen Astro. They need to tone down the memberberries content too. Cameos are fun when used sparingly but putting so many in makes them less special.

Gotta give up, Reggie manage to make a event and award nobody ever heard of the hottest topic with two short sentences. Guy still got it.

It was far better than Super Mario Odyssey.
As some who played both for the first time recently, I'd put them on par. I'd say Odyssey shades it with platforming and the different 'skills' you get in each level by possessing things. The controller stuff in Astro Bot is revolutionary though.

Team Asobi is now the jewel in Sony’s crown
Not a High bar considering their other studios have done fuck all this gen:

  • 2 remasters from ND
  • 1 sequel and a remaster from Guerrilla
  • 2 sequels from Insomniac
  • 1 remaster from BluePoint
  • Nothing from SP
  • Nothing from Bend
  • Nothing from Media Molecule

It seems a pretty solid game, no doubt about it, but isn't better than any Mario game. Besides, AstroBot is just a copy of those games.

But I repeat, it's, nevertheless, a solid game.

"almost" lol.

It plays and controls even better as a platformer than Nintendo games.
Have you seen some of the ways players use cappy to get around the level and reach places almost not intended to reach? It's absolutely mind blowing.

I haven't seen ANYTHING even close to that in Astro Bot.

The big irony is that these people go into Nintendo threads and post that Nintendo's stuff is "for kids" while celebrating Astro Bot.
That's so cheezy. Also our community here isn't that big so we definitely see the same names "fighting" for their belief :messenger_grinning_sweat:

But it's fine, it's among the things that makes Gaf charm lol

I agree the rescue mission is better but everything I said is true. Nintendo games have fallen off and none have reached the height of Astro. I beat odyssey around launch and never cared to ever come back to it because it's not interesting and has mediocre level design.

So are we all in agreement that good games that people love and enjoy do well?

Wheter its nintendo or sony , we want fun games. And we will buy them.

But hey stick to gaas.
We are, but definitely not Sony. Thinking GaaS is the future is downright moronic. The money wasted on Concord could have funded three sequels—or even more—of this.
