Asus ROG Swift PG278Q monitor, 1440p/144hz/G-Sync

Might be the wrong thread but doesn't hurt to ask.

I have an Asus monitor and whenever I connect headphones or speakers to the 3.5mm jack, there's always a slight humming noise.

Is this because of ground looping or are all Asus monitors like this?

I have an ML239H IPS monitor if that means anything, but it's probably a problem that extends to their other cheaper monitors as well.

Does anyone know why static backgrounds (such as loading screens) stutter when using G-sync?

There is a correlation for some engines between loading times and framerate (not sure why). some games limit their framerate during loading, this can be below 35hz (natural selection 2 for example goes down to 30).

I've run into the issue being described - it's as if the backlight is flickering slightly on a static screen during loading. It almost seems like it might be some kind of interference.

For some games such as Heroes of the Storm it's so disturbing that I had to deactivate G-Sync. I'd say it's a big issue.

Whew. I'm kind of glad now that I know other people are noticing this. I have a modded Asus monitor with the G-Sync module installed and I thought something was wrong.

I wonder if this can be fixed within a driver update if enough people complain about it.

Sorry to bump this, but I'm thinking about ordering one of these as soon as I can find it available. How do games running in 1920 x 1080 looking on this thing? I'm specifically planning to hook a PS4 up to it on occasion and am worried I'll be in for a really poor quality image. Any impressions?

How were you planning on connecting to it? this monitor is display port only. Not sure if the PS4 will like going HDMI to DP, then again I'm sure it would work if you disabled HDCP.

1080p looks fine. But don't get a 1440p monitor if you're not going to use full resolution, get a 1080p Gsync monitor.

Well then, I suppose I should have looked into that... There might be converters, but looking closer at the monitor it appears there is only a single input?

I think I may just wait for more panels to enter the market. Any idea when the models shown off at CES will be available for purchase?

I plan to play PC games in 1440p (whenever possible), but I'd also want to hook up a PS4 to the same monitor every once in a while.

The upcoming Acer IPS panel has multiple inputs: http://international.download.nvidi...ernational/images/acer-xb270hu/XB270HU_10.png

If Acer's schedule is still on track, it should be released this month http://www.geforce.com/whats-new/articles/nvidia-g-sync-worlds-first-144hz-ips-monitor-unveiled

Well, to be 100% honest, the price on the RoG Swift always made sense to me. Super high quality 144Hz 1440p panel (albeit TN) alone would put it in the $600 range. Throw G-Sync on top of that, as well as some neat firmware, tools, high quality stand, and you're at the MSRP.

What are your settings guys? I'm messing with different options to see which I like more

Monitor settings: Brightness 100 / Contrast 55

Nvidia Control Panel Color settings: Brightness 45% / Constrast 65% / Gamma 1.00 / Digital Vibrance 55% / Hue 0

I haven't touched the defaults on the Nvidia Control Panel settings, but my monitor settings are Brightness 45 / Contrast 50. I'd also like to know what everyone else uses. I am not good at calibrating monitors.

Jesus man brightness at 45? I can't stand anything less than 85 even in a full dark room.

It's the third time since October that I've had the pixelated screen problem. Wonder if it's worth trying a new DP cable? If it starts happening at least once a day I think I'll return it. The screen also turns off for a split second usually once a day, really disappointing and I don't feel like this monitor will last me a long time with the way it's behaving.

The only problems I've had so far is the screen brightness flickering on loading screens when using GSync (which is understandable given the very low frame rate at those times, and thankfully not a big issue since it's out of game), and very rarely the monitor screen stays black when I power it up (which is pretty much just a cosmetic issue since it takes less than half a second to toggle the power off and on to get it working again).

Otherwise it's been perfect for me.

It takes a bit but you'll get use to it and your eyes will thank you.

Here's mine:

First, download the color management file off of ASUS's site, and read up on how to activate it.

Monitor Options:

Brightness: 21

Contrast: 50

R: 96

G: 96

B: 100

Nvidia Settings:

Brightness: 50

Contrast: 50

Gamma: 0.92

Digital Vibrance: 52% (I know, but I like it.)

Hue: 0

I can't seem to find this. Do you have link to it, by any chance? And does the profile make the colors look better or something?

Can't imagine this on 100 brightness. Would be like staring at the sun.

I can't imagine anything less than 85, it looks incredibly washed out.

http://www.asus.com/us/Monitors/ROG_SWIFT_PG278Q/HelpDesk_Download/

It'll be in "others", does not show up in the Windows 8.1 menu (but works with it.)

Instructions on how to install a color profile and what it does can be found on google.

I don't see anything apart from manuals in different languages.

Hey all,

So after about 4 months of happy Swift usage the monitor started to exhibit intermittent issues. These include:

  • Perminant shadoweed horizontal lines across the screen
  • all fonts appearing blurry / garbled
  • lots of backlight flicker
  • A static effect of lines appearing from the right hand side of teh screen after booting (the same affect as this, although this isn't my monitor or vid https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bv0NZhaXLzc)

I tried so many things to fix it

  • clean installations of drivers
  • rolling back to older versions of drivers
  • i bought a new Display Port cable with shielding
  • Installing / uninstalling software etc

In the end i had to accept the monitor had a hardware fault. The issues went from intermittent to permanent. I have read reports of these issues from others too. I'm sad to say that if you have one of these and you experience issues like me, its hardware.

I was very down and contacted ASUS via the phone and they told me to fill in an RMA on their website. I expected some sort of nightmare but it was actually very easy and they gave me 1 to 1 contact during the wait (it took them 3 weeks to get me a new monitor).

Today a courier came to my home with a new monitor (not a refurb) and collected my old monitor.

The new one is working great and no issues so far *Fingers Crossed*

I just wanted to share my experience incase anyone else has one and it has the same issues.

Getting flicker at 144hz when using Windows. Random things, like I was watching a video on Gametrailers and it would do it every 20 or so seconds. Some other applications it happens too, like in GPUZ when switching the GPU to monitor. Had it happen a bit before but ignored it as random but if it's going to affect my general internet browsing I'm a bit put off.

Running at 120hz eliminates it but obviously given the expense of the monitor I'm not exactly keen on using workarounds. Might have to look into an RMA myself. Still in return window at Amazon but they don't appear to have replacement options right now.

I'm getting like half a second black screen at least 10 times a day, *at least*. It's getting incredibly annoying and not only I'm incredibly disappointed in Asus but disgusted that they put such an expensive monitor on sale riddled with these issues. I plan on returning it but as a student I simply do not have the time, fuck this.

Edit: And now this happened again, it's like the fifth time it has happened since October. https://imgur.com/a/Ufhjp

This game Reassembly has a "borderless windowed" mode that actually works with gsync. I'm not sure how they do it, but it's great to see. When you click outside the window it switches out of gsync, but stays visible, and then goes back to gsync when you click in. It's a quick transition of a few frames of black screen.

They fake it, haha. They switch to borderless window when you click out of the game. Otherwise it's in normal fullscreen mode.

It's not possible to use GSync in borderless fullscreen mode, so this is as close as you can get it.

Ha, sneaky. I guess it's just fast because it's a small game.

My Current PC doesn't have displayport. I was wondering if a Displayport to HDMI adapter would work in the mean time until I finish building my PC? which should be done sometime in the summer. I know I will not get any of features of G-Sync or high refresh rate but my monitor just died don't want to spend 300 dollars now and another 799+ in a few months.

What are some good displayport to HDMI adapter that work well? If possible link to BestBuy or Amazon.

I don't know how to answer your question but please when you purchase this monitor make sure you can return it in case of malfunction as it is not a very reliable monitor.

I just bought an LG 34um95 from Amazon and thinking of returning it for a swift. For one it has ridiculous backlight bleed in all four corners and secondly I'll be playing ALOT of MKX and SFV on the PC so having that super fast response time will be nice.

If backlight bleed is a concern then stay away from this monitor. The bottom part of the monitor especially during movie watching/gaming etc has incredibly bad bleed.

Prej ka je ti shqipe? Call ASUS and do a return, it shouldn't take a lot of time. Try Newegg. UPS will pick it up quick.

Had no idea where to post this, but is there any news on Nvidia adding DSR + G-Sync support? Is there a technical reason why I can't enable both?

Huh? You can, I do it just like normal. Something off if you can't.

Maybe an SLI thing? Only use one card here.

Whoa, thanks. Couldn't find the option in Nvidia, strangely. All is good.

edit: thanks riflen. not sure why I even care about DSR after upgrading to the 144hz AOC when I know damn well I'm not running any recent games at 100+fps/1440p on a single 970. Thanks again.

Never.

I can't make custom resolutions (rejects them) nor can I use DSR (no option to do so). I am using SLI GTX 780s and it seems from rfilen's post the SLI may be the culprit.

Yes, SLI + G-Sync + DSR is not yet supported as per my post.

I've no concrete word on custom resolutions on this display, only my own impressions and conclusions. I've found the PG278Q does not accept any custom resolutions and I believe this is due to the fact that the G-Sync module does not contain a traditional scaler chip.

As the monitor is expected to be used together with a Nvidia GPU of certain ability, all resolution scaling is performed on the GPU itself. I think this means that custom resolutions as we're used to enabling them, are out of the question.
Perhaps someone with a different G-Sync display can disprove this, but I've only used the PG278Q myself.

Fake EDIT: I read on blurbusters that downsampling using custom resolutions works on the old ASUS VG248QE + G-Sync module. The trick is to make sure the display is set to the Hz of the custom resolution you're trying to create. e.g. if you're trying to create 3840x2160 60Hz, be sure to set the display at 2560x1440 60Hz. There seem to be problems with flicker in custom modes with G-Sync enabled though. Very much try with caution and see for yourself. Here is the thread.
