Twentieth Episode (79) - Memories of the Future

  • Amazing twist that Grisha had found the Founding Titan very early and decided to just keep living with his family until he had no choice.
  • Grisha apologizing to the son he failed. So well done.
  • Zeke trying to understand why Eren is like this if he wasn't brainwashed by Grisha. Eren explains that it's simply who he is at his core. Sort of echoes what Reiner says ("Eren is the exact wrong person to hold the power of the founding titan").
  • Another interesting wrinkle is that Grisha tried to talk it out with Frieda the new holder of the Founding titan, but she shot him down, claiming the Eldians have committed a sin, taken too many lives, and must eventually perish.
  • You can tell that, to Zeke's surprise, Eren would've slaughtered the royale family sooner than Grisha did.
  • Holy shit. It appears the Attack Titan, the one that moves forward, is the only one capable of seeing the future!
  • Fucking hell, Grisha would've never killed anyone if it wasn't for the ghost of his son encouraging him.
  • Had to hold back tears at the Grisha / Zeke scene (don't judge me).
  • The twists are seriously insane with Grisha knowing what Eren's about to do and telling Zeke to stop him. It's all so delicious.
  • Next episode will probably be the most revelatory considering the title (first episode of the show was something like "to you, 2000 years from now).

I've literally never gotten why people react to things by writing out "I'M SCREAMING!", like, you're sitting alone screaming at a screen?

...When I saw the next episode title, I fucking screamed at my screen! I KNEW the overall story of AoT was always going to loop back to the very beginning, with the title "To You, in 2000 Years", and Eren's dream that seemed to last forever. It's all really coming...Well, um, I used this last week, but to a head!

Man, there is not going to be another show like this.

Still thinking about that one

Season 1: Eren is the good guy
Season 2: Eren is the good guy
Season 3: Eren is the good guy
Season 4 part 1: Eren was raised in terrible conditions and must have a plan and I still see where he's coming from
Season 4 part 2: Ok so Eren is literally a demon through time

Within that one scene, Eren can seem like a manipulative demon, but in the context of the whole show, he saved the Eldians in paradise from being exterminated. If the Royals weren't killed then and there, everyone else would have died by now.

He will not hesitate. He will walk forward.

Well, that was dark.

Is there a blacksmith Levi can commission a giant sword and prosthetic arm cannon from?

Twenty-First Episode (80) - From You, 2000 Years Ago
  • -Eren tearing his thumbs off in Paths where it would take a longer time to heal - freaking Metal, bruh.
  • -Ymir. A kind soul, abused and unable to defend herself. Accepts the blame that her fellow slaves point her direction.
  • -Although it wasn't outright said, my theory of the Titan powers coming from a parasite seems to be true (according to the imagery). However, I did believe it was an alien parasite. Not sure if that will be expanded on.
  • -It comes as a surprise that the Eldians were actually the captors of Ymir's people. The modern Eldians would essentially be anyone who has her blood, but initially, they were a tribe whose rival was Marley and they used Ymir to become a Kingdom or Empire.
  • -Huh, the mid-episode info card does confirm that it could be a parasite that gave Ymir its powers, but doesn't confirm.
  • -The Rumbling has begun. It's so loud Armin has to shout directly into Mikasa's ear to be heard.
  • -Damn, Eren's got those Voldemort mind powers now. SUBJECTS OF YMIR, IT IS I, EREN YEAGER.
  • -Hmmm, so if we take Eren at his word, he's trying to wipe everyone out because that's the only way the subjects of Ymir won't be eliminated. For now, I'm willing to go along with this premise, although earlier in the previous season, he stated that he would use the Rumbling as a warning rather than an extermination tool.

Interesting developments. I don't believe we've seen all the twists yet, lol.

Is that a Berserk ref? I should continue reading that.

Yeah, this was all reminiscent of the Eclipse. Interesting development, but a dark path for Eren to tread.

At this point we should take Eren's plan to trample the world at face value, given Grisha's plea to Zeke and Armin's observations.

Right. It feels weird theorizing at this point of the story. it might be best to just let it play out and have an opinion afterwards, but I can't stop from thinking of all kinds of alternatives to why he might activate every wall.

What the fuuuuuck

Now that's the way to do a protagonist flip reveal, take notes end of GoT. The imagery of his face on the black screen when he was talking, obviously likening this to a kind of devil. That was DARK.

Ymir's life is so fucked up. Starts as a slave, may or may not have let loose a pig, takes the blame, falls into a tree, comes into contact with "Something", becomes a child concubine to the king forced to bear child after child, and after dying is chopped up and fed to those children. THEN, for reasons I'm not sure are clear (the kings wishes? Did the "Something" follow his command?) she's the one to build titans alone for an eternity, every single one a pain staking chore, every time one is formed, for 2000 years, which stretch to eternity where Ymir is, must have been millions of years building titans

She seems entirely innocent in all this, but this extreme punishment of someone innocent creates a lot of righteous rage, and so she gave Eren the Founding Titan powers, in an amazing segment where it joined his severed head

Jesus tapdancing Christ with this show...I don't even know....

Man...i don't think 23 minutes ever happened so fast in my life. The past 3 episodes have been such a crazy ride.

By the way, i loved the detail of Mikasa asking Armin what he was saying cause she couldn't hear shit. It's details like this that make this show come alive. The voice acting, the soundtrack, the animation...it has all been amazing. I will need to rewatch it all one day. Anime, OVAs, etc...i feel like i'm missing so much details...

I feel like Isayama played a grand game of chicken with us. Like "How long were you willing to cheer while going towards the cliff of genocide? Now? How about now? How about now?

Do you still, a little bit, want him to win? Look at yourself now. This is how it works."

This is what Game of Thrones completely failed at doing. Genius.

I'm still waiting for the moment this jumps the shark during these last episodes. So far it's been delivering and impressing me in every way.

I like how a girl fell into a tree and a spine parasite gave her all the titan powers and it connected to Eren's dismembered head in an instant he stayed alive and we're here like "it didn't jump the shark yet" lol. It just has to *earn* it which is what he's still doing very well.

Like a few posted in this thread I've heard some manga impressions on what's coming, but this is why I'm watching the show instead, things could change and some scenes are just earned so much better through the voice acting, music, and animation, the spine thing going into Eren's head was just amazing, one of the best reveals in TV

I mean it's all about context and the world that the story unfolds.
I do agree that Yimr part was a bit...too much. I was expecting a better explanation but since this involves some norse mythology, there could be some stuff i'm missing.

I've not seen this show since season one and drop the manga too. I've finally caught up this past week. Damn what a ride!

Gabi is such an annoying character and seems to cause so much havoc for some reason! WTF

Oh man I was feeling bad for him and Mikasa.

Ever had a bad day?

Ever had your friend who you continued to believe in through thick and think plan on genociding most of the world?

Mikasa especially, she's loved him since childhood

Can't get enough of reaction vids for this, the cheering at Eren's our ally, and then the speech right after, must have been a fraction of what they felt

Twenty-Second Episode (81) - Thaw

  • The episode is called Thaw. I'm sure many of us can guess what that means. We open with Annie's father.
  • Jean notices that the rumbling happening would be a self-fulfilling prophecy. You call someone the devil long enough and they just might end up proving you right.
  • Connie's desire to see his mother's suffering ending overtakes him and he runs off with Falco. Poor Falco is just viewed as food. A tool.
  • Unfortunately, that looks like Nile who was killed by Gabi saving Kaya.
  • A poignant comment by Nicholas. Everyone needs to run from their own devil inside.
  • Oh fuck! Perfect old season music cue! Commander Sadies to the rescue. Erwin's teacher. Let's Go.
  • Jean naturally taking a commanding role. Very cool to see.
  • Such a great scene. Shed a tear for Commander Pixis. Taken out by our beloved Armin.
  • They've become such proficient titan killers. Crazy journey up till now. Mikasa a badass, of course.
  • With Armin explaining the Connie/Falco situation, the question of Eren's ability to control titans arises. Why hasn't he turned them back to normal? Edit: thinking on it, I don't believe it's been ever said in the show that the Founding Titan can actually turn titans back to normal. Might be the only way is eating one of the nine.
  • As a lot of us expected, Annie's back. But what's she going to do? I wonder if Eren told her a little something extra in Paths.

Excellent ep. See you next time.

The old style ODM gear and uniforms and the throwback music was a really nice touch at this point. It's gotten so dark at this point, there was a nice bit of F Yeah Humanity back in there, and the gang are so good at killing titans at this point. Shadis getting his moment as the hero was nice - not just a Bystander.

Gabi killing the titan and Kaya imagining Sasha there with her bow, oh my heart, excellent callback to the kindness of Sasha still impacting the world a little at a time.

Everyone's all who's going to eat who but where the F is Levi and Hange! If he can't become a titan because Ackerman something he's probably still out for this arc though

Did end right at the exciting part though, I actually went "Ahhh whhyy!". Annie is no doubt going to be important here, but what a moral mess, for her it was probably an instant since freezing and from killing all those people, she's still 16, when everyone's been through so much since then and the whole situation has changed many times.

That's the predominant theory I've heard.
I would hate a year to wait for a movie in the states....

But at the same time, having a theater full of mega fans watching together.... Also sounds like a once in a lifetime insanity lol I would definitely be there

Is this really ending in 5 episodes? Doesn't feel like it tbh...

Loved this calmer episode. I missed character interactions like this. That Armin / Mikasa conversation said it all tbh...

Everyone who reads the manga seems pretty sure it'll end in a movie as there's too many chapters for the remaining episode count, and the next few episodes will also be slower before it picks up before the end

I'd rather they go down that route then rushing the ending. Even if i have to wait a year for the damn movie.

I wonder who would do it. If it's MAPPA again there will probably be a substantial gap. But while I've been happy with their part 2 work, I'm also drooling at the idea of a high budget Wit movie to finish off what they started. Like the animation on Broly was hilariously above most of Super because of the time and budget.

A pristinely animated movie would be the ending it deserves, just hope it's simultaneous for the international crowd.

So is this ending in a movie? 6 more episodes don't add up
I will say from reading the manga. that the 2nd last chapter ended at a point where I felt there was no way it could be wrapped up in the final chapter, but then when i read the final chapter it did feel adequately wrapped up.

I also just checked the list of chapters and there are only 13 left to cover. That would take 8 episodes going at last season's pace. I'm not sure 6 episodes + movie makes sense. But who knows.

Would the episodes left be enough to finish it you think?

It's one of the most popular animes out, just for the money side of it I could see them stretch it to a movie. I just hope it has the room to breathe it deserves, and also we get some meticulous high time and budget animation for the end.

It's been 10 years since I started, I can wait a little more for a pristine ending. Some manga people also said they might change the ending, do you think so, without getting into why that is?

To be honest, I think I would have to reread the manga to know. But based on what I remember it could be done.

I think when people say they want the ending changed, they're mainly talking about the epilogue stuff. (Like who has babies with who) I don't see the actually ending being changed much if at all.

a movie would be a year away, maybe even more for the states, so the wait isnt ideal, waiting 6 months for part 2 and avoiding spoilers was not easy.

But at the same time...i have been to the theatres to see anime movies like DBZ, naruto, one piece, my hero etc.....and thats shit is insane, quite the experience. And I think the roof would blow off with a attack on titan ending movie......that gets me mad excited

so im of two minds on this

Kinda like the idea of sharing a theater experience with a bunch of fans for the ending too. And yeah, Broly was amazing in a theater, lots more time and budget than the show obviously and way better animation (plus I was high so it was fun lol)

yeah broly was a blast, that second my hero academia movie wsa great too

but my favorite experience was also tied to an ending of sorts, the boruto movie was insane. Back then the manga had ended, and the boruto movie was kinda the epilogue, and unlike other stuff, there was no manga for it, so it was the first time people were seeing that 'ending' all at the same time

quite the experience with a bunch of naruto fans

(this was also before there was even a hint of a boruto show, the last and boruto movie was supposed to fully close the lid on all things naruto)

I don't want to wait for a movie, especially because I also love watching reactions on yt. It would take forever for the movie to hit vod.

The budget would probably be bigger yes, but I personally would prefer a shorter 3rd part in the fall or something.

If they at least timed it so the movie would come out this summer, but knowing my luck it is next year.
